Book SynopsisThis book challenges current views that public life is in decline and that contemporary urban design trends reliant on privatisation, control, events, and thematic designs are to be blamed. Drawing on detailed and extensive analysis of a case study that illustrates well such urban design trends, it shows that informal social life and interaction occur more than its necessary in new master planned environments and new designed public settings, whether public or private owned and/or managed. Furthermore, it reveals the existence of a new category of informal public social settings which it calls fourth places because of their close relationship to Oldenburg’s third places in terms of social and behavioural characteristics – radical departure from the routines of home and work, inclusivity and social comfort – but distinct in terms of activities, locations and spatial conditions – being characterised by spatial, temporal and managerial in-betweenness, i.e. indeterminacy in form, function and times, and a great sense of publicness.The acceptance of these findings problematises well-established urban design theories about master planning, expands existing social theories about the optimal conditions for public social life by empirically and spatially elaborating on them and redefines several spatial concepts for designing public space in relation to the specific dynamics of informal social interaction. Book SynopsisHow spatial planning was transformed in Europe in the postwar period. Spatial planning is a typical European attempt to shape the development of societies by ordering their territory. It emerged in the nineteenth century from colonial settlement and conquest projections, urban reform, and conservative or even fascist fantasies of order. With this legacy, further burdened by the Soviet planned economy, spatial planning entered a new epoch after 1945. Since then, it has attempted to participate in the reconstruction of Europe and to accompany the path into modern society, mass democracy, and mass prosperity. Therefore, parallel to the social changes between 1945 and 1975, a reform of spatial planning began from Spain to Germany and from the Netherlands to Italy. However, these developments found themselves in competition with the specialized planning of the ministries, economic framework planning, and the market economy. In the process, spatial planning was transformed, becoming an institutional part of the European legal and social states. Es zielt darauf ab, die Konstruktionsprinzipien und Sinnzuschreibungen, mit denen städtische Wirklichkeit hergestellt wird, zu erfassen. Fortunately, many city governments are now developing sustainable transport strategies to target these issues and promote more sustainable modes, such as public transport and non-motorized transport. To date, however, their efforts to design effective strategies have been thwarted by their limited capacity to collect and analyze data. The Sustainable Urban Transport Index (SUTI) was developed by ESCAP to address this gap. The SUTI is a tool that summarizes, tracks and compares the performance of cities in sustainable urban transport and related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SUTI is a composite index made up of ten indicators, each measuring different aspects of sustainable urban transport. In addition, the data which make up the SUTI can be collected by city officials at low cost and on a regular basis, thereby allowing them to continuously monitor their city's performance over time. The main aim of this report is to demonstrate how SUTI can be used by policymakers to monitor progress towards sustainable urban mobility, as well as to identify those policies which will move urban transport systems towards sustainability. Book SynopsisThis book proposes a new interdisciplinary understanding of urban design in China based on a study of the transformative effects of socio-spatial design and planning on communities and their governance. This is framed by an examination of the social projects, spaces, and realities that have shaped three contexts critical to the understanding of urban design problems in China: the histories of “collective forms” and “collective spaces”, such as that of the urban danwei (work-unit), which inform current community building and planning; socio-spatial changes in urban and rural development; and disparate practices of “spatialised governmentality”. Aside from the fact that most Toyota passenger vehicles are produced there, generally little is known about its reality.Since the 1960s, the city has continuously attracted numerous jobseekers from distant rural areas. Owing to years of stable employment and settlement within local communities, once-new workers gradually build strong ties with their neighbours and actively participate in residential activities. This pattern of settlement provides a unique example of long-prosperous industrial cities, which deserves discussion against a backdrop of the present “de-industrializing” urban economies.Unfortunately, this favourable situation is now changing, despite the regional economy’s steady recovery from the 2008 financial crisis. Addressing this paradox is the main focus of the present book. The upgrading of the Toyota Production System and concomitant widening class disparity are damaging local ties under severe pressure from global competition. Other suppressing factors are driven by sociological conditions, such as aging, declining marriage rates and birth rates. By comparing two sets of survey data, from 2009 and 2015, and performing fieldwork research in two communities that once were “new towns”, the book seeks to provide an understanding of the present situation of this unusual industrial city. Based on five years of deep participatory experience, this multi-modal (text, musical composition, social media, performance) sonic ethnography is centered around a community of noisy people who make rock music within the constraints of urban life in Singapore. The heart and soul of this community is English Language rock and roll music pioneered in Singapore by several members of the 1960s legendary 'beats and blues' band, The Straydogs, who continue to engage this community in a sonic way of life. Grounded in debates from sound studies, Ferzacca draws on Bruno Latour's ideas of the social-continually emergent, constantly in-the-making, 'associations of heterogeneous elements' of human and non-human 'mediators and intermediaries' - to portray a community entangled in the confounding relations between vernacular and national heritage projects. Music shops, music gear, music genres, sound, urban space, neighborhoods, State presence, performance venues, practice spaces, regional travel, local, national, regional, and sonic histories afford expected and unexpected opportunities for work, play, and meaning, in the contemporary music scene in this Southeast Asian city-state. These locations are examined in this book, along with Taipei and Shanghai. Because the administrative boundaries of the cities at the core of these zones do not include the entire urban area, the significance of the broader urban community has largely escaped scholarly attention. The authors base their analysis on actual agglomeration size rather than administrative boundaries, and draw on unpublished census data to study the dynamics of these massive urban zones, considering area and population size as well as social and demographic patterns of change in core, inner and outer zones. They conclude that these mega-urban regions continue to increase their share of national populations, and zones immediately beyond the official metropolitan boundaries are where the most dramatic changes are occurring.
