Vintage Publishing Pyongyang
Book SynopsisFamously referred to as part of the ''Axis-of-Evil'', North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. A series of manmade and natural catastrophes have also left it one of the poorest. When the fortress-like country recently opened the door a crack to foreign investment, cartoonist Guy Delisle found himself in its capital Pyongyang on a work visa for a French film animation company, becoming one of the few Westerners to witness current conditions in the surreal showcase city. Armed with a smuggled radio and a copy of 1984, Delisle could only explore Pyongyang and its countryside while chaperoned by his translator and a guide. But among the statues, portraits and propaganda of leaders Kim Il-Sung and his son Kim Jong-Il - the world''s only Communist dynasty - Delisle was able to observe more than was intended of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered. His astute and wry musings on life in the austeTrade ReviewDelisle has drawn an unforgettable picture of Pyongyang * Time *Combining a gift for anecdote and an ear for absurd dialogue, Delisle's retelling of his adventures makes a gently humorous counterpoint to the daily news stories about the axis of evil, a Lost in Translation for the Communist world. Delisle's simple but expressive art works well with his account, humanizing the few North Koreans he gets to know and facilitating digressions into North Korean history and various bizarre happenings involving brandy and bear cubs. Pyongyang will appeal to multiple audiences: current events buffs, Persepolis fans and those who just love a good yarn * Publishers Weekly *News coverage from North Korea is scant - the regime of the world's last true totalitarian state is not exactly welcoming to foreign journalists. But a new graphic novel gives a rare, tragicomic, glimpse into everyday life in the drabbest of world capitals * Independent *The reigning king of the graphic travel memoir... Delisle's curiosity and amusement at the country's bizarre relationship with foreign visitors is equally funny and fascinating * Guardian, *Top 10 Funny Comic Books* *

Book SynopsisShortly after the 2005 London bombings, Tahir Shah was thrown into a Pakistani prison on suspicion of spying for Al-Qaeda. What sustained him during his terrifying, weeks-long ordeal were the stories his father told him as a child in Morocco.Inspired by this, on his return to his adopted homeland he embarked on an adventure worthy of the mythical Arabian Nights, going in search of the stories and storytellers that have nourished this most alluring of countries for centuries. Wandering through the medinas of Fez and Marrakech, criss-crossing the Saharan sands and tasting the hospitality of ordinary Moroccans, he collected a treasury of traditional stories recounted by a vivid and eccentric cast of characters: from master masons who work only at night to Sufi wise men who write for soap operas and Tuareg guides addicted to reality TV. Beaufort Books Unlikely Pilgrim
Book SynopsisTwo middle-aged men, fast friends, make eleven foreign tripspilgrimages you might call themto parts of the world rich in the history of Christianity. The trips combine adventure, strenuous physical activity, exhilaration, discovery, and friendship. Three of the journeys were to Western Europe; six were to Eastern Europe and the Balkans and two to the Middle East. The trips were spontaneous and unplanned, often requiring improvisation along the way. Told in a lighthearted and often amusing style, An Unlikely Pilgrim provides a vivid and colorful picture of parts of the world often out of the range of American tourists, but deep in both ancient and current geopolitical, historical, and cultural wealth.Trade Review"Alfred Regnery journeyed on foot, bicycle, and local transport along the pilgrim routes of the old world, recording the indelible traces of Christianity in a continent that is now trying hard to rub them out. Regneryâs acute observations of the people and places along his way, and his sensitive response to the holiness that still lingers around them, make for fascinating reading. While accomplishing remarkable feats of physical endurance he also pursued his own spiritual journey, from scepticism to Christianity and thence into the Catholic Church. His touching account of this is not the least of the bookâs many charms, and his account of the state of Europe today should be read by all who are concerned with Western civilisation and its fate." -- Roger ScrutonInUnlikely Pilgrim, Alfred Regnery has provided a fascinating account of a series of unique trips to parts of Europe and the Middle East, which give a remarkable insight into the origins and significant aspects of Christianity and Western Civilization. Much more than a travelogue, this highly readable book includes both stories of high adventure and perceptive observations of the peoples and places that have affected the course of history. A particularly compelling feature of this rewarding book is the author's personal reflections about the impact of these experiences on hisown life and philosophy. -- Ed Meese IIIAl Regnery's Unlikely Pilgrimis the story of grace at work in a life lived with integrity and courageâand an encouragement to others to find The Way. -- George Weigel

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Welsh Marches Railway
Book SynopsisFormerly known as the North and West Route, the Welsh Marches Line runs for 95 miles from Newport to Shrewsbury. It is a vital rail passenger link between Wales, Northern England (to Manchester via Crewe) and the Midlands. It also connects North Wales and South Wales. The route sweeps through delightful countryside on the borderlands of England and Wales. It is unique in that ithas one of the longest sections of railway line on the network in the UK that still uses the steam age Absolute Block method of signalling to control the trains, operated by mechanical signals from 16 consecutive signal boxes, the most continuous number of signal boxes anywhere on a stretch of line in the UK. It also has the distinction of operating the largest working mechanical signal box in the world, Shrewsbury's Severn Bridge Junction, located just outside Shrewsbury station. Although freight traffic has reduced considerably in recent years, steel, timber and aggregates continue to be important freight flows. The diminishing number of locomotive hauled freight trains, however, has been offset in the past few years by the introduction of locomotive hauled premier passenger services. Indeed, it is exceptional for being one of the few lines on the UK network to operate regular premier services with dedicated first-class carriages, including chef, from Swansea and Cardiff to Manchester. The book is a stunningly illustrated contemporary portrait of the Welsh Marches line in its entirety, featuring 260 colour images, describing in detail its trains, signalling, stations, route geography, and its brief history where relevant. In particular, it is a study of one of the few remaining outposts of surviving mechanical signalling on the UK rail network, with detailed descriptions and images of all the signal boxes operating on the line which were visited by the author. In addition, the book explores the magnificent scenery the line crosses dominated by rural farmland, rolling hills and areas of outstanding natural beauty. The combination of unspoiled rural and natural countryside, coupled with steam-age signal boxes and extant semaphore signals, gives a timeless feel to the line.

Transport expert Steven Higashide shows us what a successful bus system looks like with real-world stories of reform, such as Houston redrawing its bus network overnight, and San Francisco revamping its boarding procedures. Higashide shows how to marshal the public in support of better buses and how new technologies can keep buses on time and make complex transit systems understandable. Higashide argues that better bus systems will create better cities for all citizens. The consequences of subpar transport services fall most heavily on vulnerable members of society. Transport systems should be planned to be inclusive and provide better service for all. These are difficult tasks that require institutional culture shifts; doing all of them requires resilient organisations and transformational leadership. Better bus service is key to making our cities better for all citizens. Better Buses, Better Cities describes how decision-makers, philanthropists, activists, and public agency leaders can work together to make the bus a win in any city.

Amber Books Ltd Ireland
Book SynopsisIreland holds a special place in people’s hearts – even for many who haven’t been there. To some the appeal is its natural beauty, to others it’s the history; to some it’s the country’s strong folk tradition, to others it even seems to be a mystical place. Ireland presents more than 200 outstanding photographs celebrating the island’s most evocative and beautiful places, whether in nature or man-made, from the miles of near empty beaches to the Mourne Mountains in County Down, from the pretty fishing towns of County Cork to Dublin’s elegant Georgian streets. Featuring images from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the book ranges widely across landscapes and history, from rugged cliffs and rolling hills to mysterious stone circles, magnificent cathedrals and ruined abbeys; and from medieval forts and castles to grand Victorian follies and villages abandoned during the Potato Famine. While some images such as the striking basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway may be familiar, others you may know only from Game of Thrones and the Star Wars films but never realized that they, too, are in Ireland. Presented in a handy pocket-sized landscape format and with captions explaining the story behind each entry, Ireland is a stunning collection of images celebrating the island’s natural beauty, culture and history.Table of ContentsIntroduction Beaches & Coastlines Achill Island, County Mayo Black Castle, County Wicklow Tory Island, County Donegal Tory Island, County Donegal Keem Beach, Achill Bradt Travel Guides Madagascar Wildlife
Book SynopsisThis new, fifth edition of Bradt's Madagascar Wildlife, first published over 25 years ago, celebrates the unique fauna of this remarkable Indian Ocean island. Written by naturalist tour-leaders and Madagascar experts, and aimed at visitors and natural-history enthusiasts alike, this guide has been thoroughly updated to reflect both the latest discoveries - on an island where new species for science are continuously discovered - and the latest developments at the country's top wildlife-tourism locations. Wildlife is the key draw for English-speaking visitors to Madagascar. Enjoying nature couldn't be more different to continental Africa. Rather than going out on safari to see the Big Five from the safety of a jeep, in Madagascar you approach wildlife on rainforest strolls, without fear of encountering dangerous snakes or angry elephants. From its endearing lemurs and comical chameleons to the endemic birds and bizarre insects, this is the only guide to showcase the whole range of Madagascar's captivating wildlife. It features lively descriptions of animals and their behaviour - perfect for the interested layman - complemented by 280 sumptuous colour photographs. A 'Habitats and Hotspots' chapter details the island's various ecosystems and presents concise information on where best to see fascinating species, helping readers choose which parks and reserves to visit - from Masoala and Ranomafana to Ifaty and Berenty. An incredible 90% of Madagascar's plants and animals are unique to the world's oldest island. Accordingly, this guide also tells the story of how Madagascar came to be so different from the rest of the world, and why evolution took a different tangent to create such an extraordinary and unparalleled array of creatures. Read about Madagascar's remarkable chameleon diversity: half the world's species occur here, including the smallest and largest. And prepare to be astonished by an orchid with a ridiculously long nectary tube that prompted Charles Darwin to correctly predict that there would be a moth that had evolved an equally absurd 30-cm-long tongue to reach it. As a practical guide to help you plan your dream wildlife trip to this special destination, Bradt's Madagascar Wildlife is readable, user-friendly and inspiring; as a souvenir, it's unbeatable.Table of ContentsContents Introduction Technical terms, Classification Habitats and Wildlife Hotspots Rainforest Montagne d'Ambre, Marojejy, Masoala, Nosy Mangabe, Anjozorobe, Andasibe-Mantadia, Ranomafana Deciduous Forests/Seasonally Dry Forests Ankarana, Daraina area, Anjajavy, Sahamalaza-Îles Radama, Ankarafantsika, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Kirindy, Zombitse The Southern Region Andringitra, Isalo, Anja, Ifaty area, Tsimanampetsotse, Andohahela, Mandrare Valley: Berenty and Ifotaka Threatened Wetlands Betsiboka Delta, Lac Kinkony and the Mahavavy Delta Mammals Lemurs, Malagasy carnivores, Tenrecs, Rodents, Bats, Whales and whale-watching Birds Primitive parrots, The birds and the beaks (vangas), Rallying rarities, Rhapsody in blue Reptiles and Frogs Chameleon, Geckos, Other lizard, Snakes, Tortoises and turtles, Frogs Invertebrate In hiding, Out of hiding, Millipedes, Spiders, Other land invertebrate, Conservation issues Madagascar at Night From dusk to dawn Camouflage Safety matches Further Information Index

Octopus Publishing Group Lost in the Lakes: Notes from a 379-Mile Hike
Book SynopsisLAKELAND BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 - THE BILL ROLLINSON PRIZE FOR LANDSCAPE & TRADITION RUNNER UPJoin travel writer Tom Chesshyre for a Lakeland adventure like no other. Explore towering mountains, wide-open valleys and magnificent lakes - stopping off at a cosy inn or two along the way - on a 379-mile hike around the Lake District From Penrith and back, via Keswick, Cockermouth, Coniston, Grasmere and Windermere, plus many places in between, Tom Chesshyre puts on his walking boots and sets forth in a "big wobbly circle" around the Lakes, drawn onwards by the dramatic scenery that attracts more than 19 million visitors each year. Across landscape that so inspired the Romantic poets, he takes in remote parts of the parkland that many tourists miss - enjoying encounters aplenty with farmers, fell runners and fellow hikers, while staying in shepherds' huts, bothies and old climbers' hotels along the way, and even going for a (chilly) dip in Derwentwater. This is the Lake District seen from its walking paths - with just a backpack, an open mind... and a spring in the step.Trade ReviewTom Chesshyre sets off to make a meandering circle of the Lake District on foot with one aim in mind: 'to let happenchance lead the way.' In his amiable and relaxed company we climb the fells and skirt the lakes; just as engagingly, we meet a carnival of characters whose personalities and opinions are the real focus of Chesshyre's tale. Together they sum up a region whose problems are many, but whose enchantments are still unmatched for walkers in these islands. * Christopher Somerville, The Times *A charming book, brimming with tender affection for this 'magnificent... dreamy patchwork' of peaks, tarns and 'serpentine valleys... between soaring slopes'. Tom Chesshyre is no brash Wainwright-bagger, but instead a relaxed, affable guide who takes us on a 'big wobbly circle' of a stroll around all sixteen main lakes: an impressive 379 miles in all. Neither travel guide nor gushing panegyric, Lost in the Lakes is a book for the everyday ambler: gentle, slow-paced and sweetly uplifting at every turn. * Rebecca Lowe, journalist and author of The Slow Road to Tehran *Lyrical, witty and full of cheer, Lost in the Lakes avoids tales of heroic climbs in favour of the quieter - and oft-overlooked - story of everyday life in one of Britain's rural honey-pots. From barmaids to town mayors, Chesshyre lends an inquiring ear to everyone who crosses his path, resulting in a delightful portrait of a community that is proud of its past but unsure of its future. Part travelogue, part social commentary, this gem of a book succeeds in being both politically engaged and uproariously entertaining - a rare feat in travel writing and a welcome new direction for the genre. * Oliver Balch, journalist and writer *Writer Tom Chesshyre takes us on an unorthodox tour of the Lake District in his latest travelogue. Not for him the chocolate box guide, but a grittier account of his travails, and his travels, on a journey of self-discovery. Having fallen in love with the area as a teenager, he returns to see what has changed, and discovers he has. What follows is a 379.1 mile - that's 904,271 steps over 32 days - odyssey, during which he finds himself falling in love all over again with this remote wilderness. * Lakeland Walker *An entertaining ramble * Wanderlust magazine *A cheery account of travel writer Tom Chesshyre's month-long 379-mile hike around the Lake District last spring. He has a journalist's ability to intersperse descriptions of dazzling scenery with brisk historical facts... this book makes you yearn to go there. * Country Life *Hopefully you will also be entertained. I know I was. * Paul Oldham, WalkLakes *Book of the month, May 2023 * Countryside magazine *A new vision of the Lakes as a capsule history of the kingdom as a whole, with its ambivalent approach to 'nature' (worshipful but predatory), its rapacious extraction of resources, its many migrations and, inevitably, class... It is the human encounters - fellow hikers friendly and not-so, get-off-my-land types and we-have-to-make-our-own-entertainment-here stoics, economic migrants, a bibulous local mayor - that make this book sing... Chesshyre [has] an eye for the lives of ordinary folk, the sweat and smoke behind the idyll. * Brian Morton, Times Literary Supplement *Tom does an excellent job * Sixty Plus Surfers *
