Little, Brown Book Group The White Birch
Book Synopsis''It has been hand-planted by Tsarinas and felled by foresters. It has been celebrated by peasants, worshipped by pagans and painted by artists. It has self-seeded across mountains and rivers and train tracks and steppe and right through the ruined modernity of a nuclear fall-out site. And like all symbols, the story of the birch has its share of horrors (white, straight, native, pure: how could it not?). But, maybe in the end, what I''m really in search of is a birch that means nothing: stripped of symbolism, bereft of use-value . . . A birch that is simply a tree in a land that couldn''t give a shit.''The birch, genus Betula, is one of the northern hemisphere''s most widespread and easily recognisable trees. A pioneer species, the birch is also Russia''s unofficial national emblem, and in The White Birch art critic Tom Jeffreys sets out to grapple with the riddle of Russianness through numerous journeys, encounters, histories and artworks that all sharTrade ReviewA natural-political exploration of Russian relationships with the birch tree across past, present, and future. Moving from the Tsarina's garden to the Soviet Gulag, from Chernobyl to Lake Baikal, The White Birch is elegant and intrepid, like its subject -- Daisy Hildyard, author of The Second Body and Hunters in the Snow'Genuinely revelatory' -- Sophy Richards * TLS *There could be no better guide through the thickets of meaning, history and imagery that entangle with the birch tree than figurative forester Tom Jeffreys -- Melissa McCarthy, author of Sharks Death SurfersA beautiful and profound meditation on the way landscape shapes art and life. I was entranced by The White Birch, a book that comes close to encapsulating the vast enigma of Russia in the form of a single tree -- Alex Preston, author of Winchelsea and As Kingfishers Catch FireI love this book. Jeffreys admits he doesn't know where he's going at every turn, but trusts his instinct - and his ear for a good story - as he tries to untangle myth from fact . . . David & Charles Schlumpf - The intrigue behind the most beautiful
Book SynopsisThis fabulous collection of cars was brought together by two French brothers, Hans & Fritz Schlumpf , and consists of hundreds of the most beautiful cars ever produced. The `Schlumpf affair' is perhaps one of the most famous stories in the car collectors world, covered extensively by the media in the mid-1970s when the collection was seized by the trade unions and later by the French government. The Schlumpf brothers were accused of fraudulent actions to obtain their collection - but following extensive research by the authors of this book, the true story behind the collection is revealed. Ard and Arnoud op Weegh spent many years investigating the Schlumpf affair, and discovered many previously unpublished documents which prove that the Schlumpf brothers have been wrongly accused over the years. This book is written to tell the true story behind the collection, and also to rehabilitate the Schlumpf family. The book is beautifully illustrated with some rare photographs, and features many of the beautiful cars that make up the Schlumpf collection.Trade ReviewIt's an intriguing story. - Kieron Fennelly. Originally published in Dutch last year, the story and contents of the world's best car collection. - Classic Cars. There are some good historic shots. - Classic & Sports Car. The book is well produced and is a worthwhile addition to your bookshelf. Certainly worth the asking price. - VSCC Bulletin. If you want to read a fantastic, true story about automotive enthusiasm, then read this 160pp hardback book. - Iain P W Robertson, Freelance. The story is intriguing, and the collection is given good space, even for those who don't care about their enigmatic owners. - Classic Car Weekly. An interesting and worthy volume. - The Automobile. Here's a long overdue book on the incredible Schlumpf Museum (now officially France's national automobile museum), from Veloce Publishing. Although most car nuts know the outline of the story of the Schlumpf brothers, Hans and Fritz, this book by father and son team, Ard and Arnold op de Weigh goes into massive amounts of detail and tells the true story of the Schlumpf Affair. In addition to the story about the discovery of the massive stash of cars, it tells the tale of woe of the financial troubles that nearly led to the loss of the entire collection along with some beautiful photography. As well as being a great book on the subject its aim is to clear the family of any wrongdoing and is a rightful collection to this beautiful collection of cars. Immense effort. - TKC. As well as unravelling cover-up, this book gives detailed accounts of the legendary vehicles in the collection ... which makes fascinating reading in itself ... This book has a real double edge - espionage, social prejudice and miscarriage of justice, plus in-depth accounts of just what grew into "the most beautiful collection in the world" Highly recommended. Old Bike Australasia Fascinating stuff. Big End/All Torque. The book is absolutely worth reading—just don’t turn the `ole brainbox off. Its editor is the founder and editor of the Megalithic Portal, "the world's most-visited standing-stone website." He has devised the book's contents around what the website has shown to be most popular, and the whole thing is a collaborative venture of browsers, travellers, visionaries and scholars, all given free rein. Vicki Cummings has written a long, and very good introduction, and other well-known archaeologists pop up among the geomancers, dowsers and bog waders with no favours [...] The reader is left to judge for themself, with powerful effect.' --British Archaeology magazine

Cicerone Press Alta Via 2 - Trekking in the Dolomites: Includes
Book SynopsisGuidebook describing Alta Via 2, a challenging hut-to-hut trek through the Italian Dolomites. Stretching 174km from Bressanone (Brixen) to Feltre, the route involves some aided and exposed sections (although several can be bypassed) calling for a sure foot and a good head for heights. It can be walked in under a fortnight - although it is also possible to walk shorter chunks should you only have limited time, and the guide highlights potential exit routes and transport options. Also included are summaries of Alte Vie 3-6, which are more demanding and include remote terrain and stretches of via ferrata for which climbing experience is essential. On Alte Vie 3-6 some nights will be spent in unmanned bivouac huts, meaning trekkers must carry their own kit, although it is possible to walk shorter hut-to-hut sections. The easiest of the Alta Via routes, Alta Via 1, is covered in a separate Cicerone guide. An overview diagram is provided for each trek, showing times between huts. Alta Via 2 is presented in 13 stages, each with clear route description illustrated with 1:75,000 mapping. There are overview statistics for each stage and contact details and notes about mountain huts encountered en route. The guide also includes a wealth of information about the region's geology, plants and wildlife to enhance your appreciation of the landscapes traversed. Useful contacts and an Italian-English glossary can be found in the appendices. A handy pocket-sized map booklet showing the full route of Alta Via 2 on 1:25,000 Kompass maps is included with the guide. Alta Via 2 visits the Plose massif, the jagged Puez-Odle, fortress-like Sella, the majestic Marmolada, spectacular Pale di San Martino and the rugged Alpi Feltrine group as it journeys from the baroque town of Bressanone to Renaissance-style Feltre. Bradt Travel Guides Uruguay
Book SynopsisThis new, fully updated fourth edition of Bradt's Uruguay remains the only dedicated English-language guide to a country that's small but bursting with character. Bradt's Uruguay provides in-depth coverage of the capital Montevideo, where the once-derelict colonial Old City is undergoing a historic resurgence, plus detailed information on the UNESCO-listed coastal city of Colonia del Sacramento, as well as Punta del Este, where the Buenos Aires glitterati decamp to the beaches each summer. There's advice, too, for active travellers who can rattle their whips on cattle-ranching estancias and spin their sticks in a game of polo or two and for nature enthusiasts keen to watch wildlife in the western wetlands and birds in Cabo Polonio and Santa Teresa. The guide also investigates the Brazilian influences behind Uruguay's music and dance, an active and upcoming food and wine scene, and the country's distinctive Afro-Uruguayan heritage, most noticeable during the world-beating 40-day Carnaval season. In addition, it covers the recent de-velopment of marijuana tours following the legalisation of marijuana. Uruguay caters for all tastes, whether you want to ride with gauchos and spend time on a tradi-tional estancia like La Sirena, visit Fray Bentos and discover the history of the town's former meat-packing plant, or take a tour of the Canelones department wineries. Montevideo's splendid Art Deco architecture and colourful annual Carnaval are covered, and so too are the stunning sandy beaches of boho-chic fishing village José Ignacio and the Termas de Daymán - Uruguay's largest hot baths. Also included are San Javier, an ideal base for bird-watching trips along the Río Uruguay and details of hiking in Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park - a subtropical canyon filled with flowers and birds. Most commonly known for winning the first soccer World Cup, electing the world's so-called 'poorest president', and raising a whole lot of beef on the pampa, Uruguay remains among South America's safest and most stable destinations, replete with interest waiting to be discovered by both leisure and adventurous travellers.Table of ContentsContents Introduction PART ONE GENERAL INFORMATION Chapter 1 Background Information Geography, Climate, Natural history, Conservation, History, Government and politics, Economy, People, Language, Religion, Culture Chapter 2 Practical Information When to visit, Highlights, Suggested itineraries, Tour operators, Red tape, Getting there and away, Health, Safety, Women travellers, Travelling with children, Travelling with a disability, LGBTQ+ travellers, What to take, Maps, Money and budgeting, Getting around, Accommodation, Eating and drinking, Public holidays and festivals, Shopping, Opening hours, Media and communications, Cultural and business etiquette, Buying a property and moving to Uruguay, Travelling positively PART TWO THE GUIDE Chapter 3 Montevideo History, Climate, Getting there and away, Getting around, Orientation, Tourist information, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Nightlife, Entertainment, Shopping, Sport and activities, Other practicalities, City tour, Museums Chapter 4 Southern Uruguay Wineries, Canelones department: West, Florida department, San Jose department, Canelones department: East, Lavalleja department Chapter 5 Eastern Uruguay Maldonado department, Rocha department Chapter 6 Western Uruguay Colonia department, Soriano department, Rio Negro department, Paysandu department, Salto department Chapter 7 The Interior Artigas department, Rivera department, Tacuarembo department, Durazno department, Flores department, Treinta y Tres department, Cerro Largo department Appendix 1 Language Appendix 2 Further Information Index

Canongate Books Hokkaido Highway Blues: Hitchhiking Japan
Book SynopsisAbridged editionIt had never been done before. Not in 4000 years of Japanese recorded history had anyone followed the Cherry Blossom Front from one end of the country to the other. Nor had anyone hitchhiked the length of Japan. But, heady on sakura and sake, Will Ferguson bet he could do both. The resulting travelogue is one of the funniest and most illuminating books ever written about Japan. And, as Ferguson learns, it illustrates that to travel is better than to arrive.Trade ReviewA fantastically offbeat odyssey brimming with irony, poetry and insight * * Scotsman * *Beneath that thick skin lies a poetic soul: he may drink too much, and end up sweaty and alone in sad 'Love Hotels', but he can write about Shintoism, history, nature and architecture with real sensitivity. Hitching allows him to give us a fresh and funny perspective on a nation that can be both mysterious and "beyond surreal" * * Sunday Times * *I enjoyed Hokkaido Highway Blues immensely - Mr Ferguson is a very gifted writer -- Bill BrysonLoaded with insights and highly original observations, this is overall an outstanding piece of travel writing. That so much of it is side-splittingly funny helps * * Insight Japan * *A mild stroke of genius . . . it's difficult not to warm to his free-wheeling style. It always sounds stupid to describe something as "laugh-out-loud-funny", but parts of his concisely-sectioned travelogue are savagely hilarious * * Sunday Herald * *

Random House Publishing Group Iberia
Book Synopsis“Massive, beautiful . . . unquestionably some of the best writing on Spain [and] the best that Mr. Michener has ever done on any subject.”—The Wall Street JournalSpain is an immemorial land like no other, one that James A. Michener, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author and celebrated citizen of the world, came to love as his own. Iberia is Michener’s enduring nonfiction tribute to his cherished second home. In the fresh and vivid prose that is his trademark, he not only reveals the celebrated history of bullfighters and warrior kings, painters and processions, cathedrals and olive orchards, he also shares the intimate, often hidden country he came to know, where the congeniality of living souls is thrust against the dark weight of history. Wild, contradictory, passionately beautiful, this is Spain as experienced by a master writer.

International Marine Publishing Co The Marlinspike Sailor
Book SynopsisHervey Garrett Smith was the foremost marine illustrator of the 1950s and 1960s, and his wonderful drawings of traditional ropework quickly propelled The Marlinspike Sailor to cult classic status when it was published in 1956. With the addition of a section on modern, synthetic rope in the 1970s, its popularity has continued undiminished to this day. It teaches a few basic knots--the bowline, sheet bend, and rolling hitch, among others--and splices in three-strand and braided rope. But its real business is decorative rope and canvaswork--the traditional arts of the sailor--and here it has no equal. For a rope mat, a rope ladder, a sea chest, a ditty bag, a canvas bucket, a mast boot, and the best-looking rope fenders or heaving line in the marina, this is the book of choice.Trade Review"[Smith's] original illustrations are a marvel of clarity and charm."
