Taylor & Francis Ltd Working with Attachment Trauma
Book SynopsisThe Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) has served as a prominent assessment tool for adults and adolescents internationally for over 20 years. This book introduces the AAP and illustrates the powerful potential for implementing the AAP in clinical practice for assessment, client conceptualization, treatment planning, analysis, and as a therapeutic guide. Chapters discuss the full scope of incomplete pathological mourning for attachment trauma, including for the first time in the field Failure to Mourn and Preoccupation with Personal Suffering. Seasoned clinical researchers and psychotherapists provide a snapshot of their clients'' unique attachment characteristics and defensive exclusion strategies as assessed by the AAP, and discuss how to use this information in treatment, as well as how to present the AAP results to their clients. This book introduces readers to how the AAP can be used with adolescents, adults, and couples, and in custody Trade Review"The editors have brought together an impressive group of international researchers and practitioners to highlight the clinical use of the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP). The chapters offer compelling examples of the AAP’s value for clinical practice, assessment, or intervention, especially in the context of attachment trauma and intergenerational transmission risk. It is a must for any student or practitioner working with vulnerable adults and parents and seeking to understand the fundamental underlying attachment mechanisms involved in the development of trauma and resilience."Chantal Cyr, Ph.D., Full professor, Department of Psychology, Université du Québec à Montréal, and Canada Research Chair in Child Attachment and Development"This book is a milestone in demonstrating the broad applicability and critical value of the AAP. The creativity and clinical acumen of the authors will benefit a host of future clients. Moreover, this book builds a bridge from assessors to therapists who will be well-served to have attachment patterns assessed in troubled clients. Kudos to the authors for such a valuable contribution!"Hale Martin, Ph.D., Clinical Professor, University of Denver, Therapeutic Assessment Institute"This book is a must-have resource for anyone using or considering using the AAP, and anyone interested in assessing attachment. Initial chapters provide an orientation to the foundation for the task stimuli and how responses to them are classified, its uses in practice, and a review of the neurophysiological correlates of its scores. In the remaining chapters, talented experts illustrate the illuminating and unique information emerging from the AAP across a range of ages, settings, and presenting issues."Gregory J. Meyer, Ph.D., Professor, University of Toledo; former Editor of Journal of Personality Assessment "The Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) to be an invaluable tool for assessment in medical settings to help clients consider the role of developmentally-based psychodynamic processes in their presenting problems. This book expands the scope of the AAP deep into practice with sophisticated and moving case studies that describe the diversity of contexts in which the AAP can enhance clinical insight and facilitate therapeutic dialogue."David J. Oxford University Press No More to Spend
Book SynopsisDismal spending on government health services is often considered a necessary consequence of a low per-capita GDP, but are poor patients in poor countries really fated to be denied the fruits of modern medicine? In many countries, officials speak of proper health care as a luxury, and convincing politicians to ensure citizens have access to quality health services is a constant struggle. Yet, in many of the poorest nations, health care has long received a tiny share of public spending. Colonial and postcolonial governments alike have used political, rhetorical, and even martial campaigns to rebuff demands by patients and health professionals for improved medical provision, even when more funds were available. No More to Spend challenges the inevitability of inadequate social services in twentieth-century Africa, focusing on the political history of Malawi. Using the stories of doctors, patients, and political leaders, Luke Messac demonstrates how both colonial and postcolonial administTrade ReviewThis text is important for anyone interested in how powerful groups legitimize social deprivation that results in poor health among the world's impoverished by implementing inane and unhelpful solutions. Messac's study will no doubt shame the former British colonial regime, but, more important, it should arm those currently in power to break the cycle of lame excuses and spur them to provide decent health services for the people of Malawi—and wherever European colonial regimes engaged unfairly with African peoples.... Summing up: Highly recommended. * CHOICE *Messac's work is a brave and important book, one that asks, with cold clarity and detailed historiographic work, the 'politically uncomfortable questions of distribution' that many only touch on. Through painstaking detail, the book convincingly shows how the narrative of scarcity in African health care was produced and has become reified, and the challenge it sets us as to why we have come to (largely) accept this, cannot be ignored. * Thandeka Cochrane, Social History of Medicine *In global health, there are still too many excuses for inaction. Through fieldwork and archival research, Luke Messac's book exposes the origins of arguments - ones I have heard far too often - for why we must value some human lives more than others. To win the fight for global health equity, we must first understand the colonial-era roots of the denial of quality health care to the world's poor. * Agnes Binagwaho, University of Global Health Equity, Rwanda *No More to Spend is a beautifully rendered social history, but it is also a superb and humane ethnography. Like a good historian, Messac advances while looking backwards. Like a good anthropologist and a superb doctor, he casts his eyes, and his thoughts, on people like Francis, trudging forwards against long odds not of his own making. * Paul Farmer, Harvard University and Partners In Health *No More to Spend is an important book on the political origins of scarcity in health care among the world's poor. Messac's original analysis explains how the people of Malawi came to be deprived of appropriate levels of spending and care over the past 100 years. This is a wonderfully thought-provoking book. * Steven Feierman, University of Pennsylvania *Based on an insightful and sensitive handling of a rich range of sources, No More to Spend represents a significant contribution to several fields, including the history of medicine and global health. This is an impressive analytical discussion of the wide ranging effects of the social construction of scarcity and the impact of new, effective medication in colonial and postcolonial Malawi (Nyasaland). * Markku Hokkanen, University of Oulu *In this masterful contribution to the emerging subdiscipline of global health history, Luke Messac examines the trajectory of health care in the former British colony of Malawi from the late nineteenth century to the present. Fascinating and methodologically meticulous. * Ted Schrecker, Newcastle University *Messac has created an engaging and lively study of how powerful people make scarcity look inevitable. By carefully examining how international and national policy has affected health care spending in a single state, he's able to show both the human cost of longstanding patterns of underfunding and the means by which people have sometimes forced their leaders - colonial and postcolonial - to do better. * Claire Wendland, University of Wisconsin-Madison *This text is important for anyone interested in how powerful groups legitimize social deprivation that results in poor health among the world's impoverished by implementing inane and unhelpful solutions. Taylor & Francis Ltd Empathy in the Treatment of Trauma and PTSD
Book SynopsisEmpathy in the Treatment of Trauma and PTSD examines how professionals are psychologically impacted by their work with trauma clients. A national research study provides empirical evidence, documenting the struggle for professionals to maintain therapeutic equilibrium and empathic attunement with their trauma clients. Among the many important findings of this study, all participants reported being emotionally and psychologically affected by the work, often quite profoundly leading to changes in worldview, beliefs about the nature of humankind and the meaning of life.John P. Wilson and Rhiannon Thomas set out to understand how to heal those who experience empathic strain in the course of their professional specialization. The data included in the book allows for the development of conceptual dynamic models of effective management of empathic strain, which may cause vicarious traumatization, burnout and serious countertransference processes.Table of ContentsForeword. Baywood Publishing Company Inc Corporate Social Responsibility Failures in the
Book SynopsisCorporate Social Responsibility Failures in the Oil Industry directly challenges the oil industry''s claims of corporate good citizenship, now widely advanced as part of a global public relations initiative. The volume spans the industry''s reach, from the troubled waters of the UK offshore Continental Shelf, with its horrendous legacy of the Piper Alpha oil rig disaster, to the inhospitable shores of Newfoundland with its own tragic legacy of lost lives; to the new frontier of oil corporate colonialism in the former Soviet Union and the icy plains of Alaska. The central theme of violations of basic labour rights and of health and environmental protection standards will make uncomfortable reading in the boardroom. It is equally essential reading for those who seek to improve the position of workers and industries within the oil industry''s global reach.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: Corporate Social Responsibility in the International Oil Industry Charles Woolfson and Matthias BeckChapter Two: The Piper Alpha Disaster and Industrial Relations in Britain’s Offshore Oil Industry Charles Woolfson, Matthias Beck, and John FosterChapter Three: Safety and Industrial Relations in the Newfoundland Offshore Oil Industry since the Ocean Ranger Disaster in 1982 Susan M. Aeon Books Ltd The Orpheus Project: A Novel
Book SynopsisA harrowing story of sexual abuse, privilege and trauma. It's Christmas Eve, and a young woman with Down's syndrome has just disclosed abuse by two men. The problem is she is a member of the British aristocracy and the men she accuses are a top politician and a rock star. How does a national health team struggle with the situation of alleged abuse by the elite and super rich? Despite a traitor in their midst, the team uncovers the appalling reality of the abusive international cult known as The Orpheus Project with its mysterious American spokesperson and powerful connections. This is the world of conspiracy theories; the Orpheus Project and the secret society that surrounds it seek to offer a form of immortality through deliberately installed dissociative disorders. At the core of this powerful novel is the story of a mother and daughter who find a way of reuniting, and the longterm consequences of childhood trauma.Trade Review‘Valerie Sinason’s The Orpheus Project is an engaging novel which is hard to put down, full of intrigue and mystery while addressing some very serious issues. The novel encompasses the secretive world of child abuse by the upper classes, trauma, dissociative identity disorder, disability, mind control and ritual abuse. The novel gives us an insight into the life of Lady Rose, rejected by her mother due to her disability..The way in which Valerie described how they eventually were able to find a closeness and union together, was very moving and beautifully told. We also get a glimpse of what life is like for adults in care and for those working with them and how professionals deal with disclosures of abuse.Their job is in effect made harder by the way the system works when the perpetrators come from the upper classes and are well known in society. It is evident from what is written that Valerie has a wealth of experience and knowledge of these issues and for those of us who work with survivors of child abuse, we know how difficult this can be to address and how hard it is for survivors to have a voice, to be heard, and to be believed, as too often they are dismissed. I feel through this novel, Valerie is in effect giving a voice to survivors as although written as fiction, the sad reality is that abuse takes place by all sections of society with too often the upper classes protected when survivors disclose. Valerie has to be applauded for raising awareness of something that is too often hidden and kept underground. I very much look forward to a sequel to this excellent captivating novel.’ SupportLine

Brill What Happened? Re-presenting Traumas, Uncovering Recoveries: Processing Individual and Collective Trauma
Book SynopsisTraumatic experiences with an overwhelming life-threatening feel affect numerous people’s lives. Death and disablement through accident, illness, war, family violence, natural and human-induced disaster can be experienced variously at an individual level through to whole communities and nations. Traumatic memories are intrusive and insistent but fragmented and distorted by the power of sensory information frozen in time. This volume examines the ways individuals, families, communities and nations have engaged with representations of traumas and the ethical dimensions embedded in those re-presentations. Contributors also explore the work of recovering from trauma and finding resilience through working with narrative and embodied forms such as dance and breathing. The ubiquity of trauma in human experience means that pathways to recovery differ, emerging from the way each engages with the world. Sharing, and reflecting on, the ways each copes with trauma contributes to its understanding as well as pathways to recovery and new strengths. Brill Topography of Trauma: Fissures, Disruptions and Transfigurations
Book SynopsisThis volume addresses trauma not only from a theoretical, descriptive and therapeutic perspective, but also through the survivor as narrator, meaning maker, and presenter. By conceptualising different outlooks on trauma, exploring transfigurations in writing and art, and engaging trauma through scriptotherapy, dharma art, autoethnography, photovoice and choreography, the interdisciplinary dialogue highlights the need for rethinking and re-examining trauma, as classical treatments geared towards healing do not recognise the potential for transfiguration inherent in the trauma itself. The investigation of the fissures, disruptions and shifts after punctual traumatic events or prolonged exposure to verbal and physical abuse, illness, war, captivity, incarceration, and chemical exposure, amongst others, leads to a new understanding of the transformed self and empowering post-traumatic developments. Book SynopsisPutting gender in a lifespan context, Hatch (sociology, U. of Kentucky) atypically accents the gains as well as losses of aging and sex differences in adaptation overall, to the death of a spouse, and to retirement. From the multifactored theoretical perspectives of symbolic interactionism and politTable of ContentsCHAPTER 1—Introduction The rationale for the book is presented. The aging experience often has been framed by scholars as well as the general public in terms of gender differences, but the nature and direction of such differences are controversial. CHAPTER 2—Putting Gender in Life Course Context The two theoretical approaches to gender differences that have been used most widely in social gerontology are reviewed and a life-course perspective is advanced as an alternative framework. CHAPTER 3—Adaptation to Aging CHAPTER 4—Adaptation to the Death of a Spouse CHAPTER 5—Adaptation to Retirement The substantive chapters of the book examine adaptation to aging as a broad and cumulative process (Chapter 3) and two life events that have been thought to pose the greatest challenges to adaptation in older age: the death of a spouse (Chapter 4) and retirement (Chapter 5). Each of these three chapters is designed to address these questions: How have theories of gender difference been used to explain adaptation in this realm of experience? To what degree have gender differences been documented in the relevant empirical literature, and are the reported findings supportive of gender difference theories? How and why does a life course perspective provide a more satisfactory framework for understanding women's and men's adaptation to aging, and their adaptation to later-life events in particular? CHAPTER 6—Conclusion The theoretical underpinnings for the life course approach utilized in the book are examined. Theoretical linkages that can be made with this approach are suggested. The book concludes by considering how adaptation to aging can be framed to focus more fully on life-long processes and challenges rather than on particular life events which are assumed to be stressful. Baywood Publishing Company Inc Soul Pain The Meaning of Suffering in Later Life
Book SynopsisThis book explores the multifaceted experience of suffering in old age. Older adults suffer from a variety of causes such as illness, loss, and life disappointment, to name a few. Suffering also occurs due to experiences related to one''s gender, ethnic background, and religion. Although gerontological literature has equated suffering with depression, grief, pain and sadness, elders themselves distinguished suffering from these concepts and at the same time showed how they are linked. Narratives of suffering from community-dwelling elders are interpreted in this book, along with the personal meaning of suffering that lies within each narrative.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduces the subject of age and suffering. It reports on the literature from several disciplines regarding suffering. Chapter 2Introduces cases to illustrate suffering as a form of cultural communication that is spoken through the body, through identity, and through narrative. Chapter 3Explores how gender shapes informants' experience of suffering, the way suffering is expressed, and discussion about it in the process of the interview. Chapter 4Acknowledges that embodied pain is a significant component in the experience of suffering in later life. Chapter 5Explores social suffering because even private, individual experiences of suffering occur in a social milieu. Chapter 6Uses cases to examine the uniqueness with which each informant coped with suffering. Chapter 7Discusses the morality imputed to the experience of suffering. In part, this morality is revealed through the causes respondents attribute to their suffering. Chapter 8Examines three often-used metaphors for suffering. They are: suffering as a threat or attack, suffering as injustice, and suffering as loss. Chapter 9Talks about the activity of suffering. Activities give compensatory meaning to an elder's life. An important activity of suffering is to tell an engaged listener a story about it. Chapter 10Is the conclusion of the book. It asks the question: Who is the self that suffers?

Baywood Publishing Company Inc Neoliberalism Globalization and Inequalities
Book SynopsisSince U.S. President Reagan and U.K. Prime Minister Thatcher, a major ideology (under the name of economic science) has been expanded worldwide that claims that the best policies to stimulate human development are those that reduce the role of the state in economic and social lives: privatizing public services and public enterprises, deregulating the mobility of capital and labor, eliminating protectionism, and reducing public social protection. This ideology, called ''neoliberalism,'' has guided the globalization of economic activity and become the conventional wisdom in international agencies and institutions (such as the IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the technical agencies of the United Nations, including the WHO). Reproduced in the ''Washington consensus'' in the United States and the ''Brussels consensus'' in the European Union, this ideology has guided policies widely accepted as the only ones possible and advisable. This book assembles a series of articles that cTrade Review"An impressive and comprehensive set of insights into the current state of globalization. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to know how and why neoliberalism has failed to deliver on its promises." -Jeff Faux, Founder and Distinguished Fellow, Economic Policy Institute, Washington, DC, Author, The Global Class War "Vicente Navarro has assembled a comprehensive, tightly argued, and powerfully supported set of contributions that demonstrate the links between neoliberalism, economic inequality, and health outcomes in a convincing and very timely fashion." -Andrew Glyn, Professor of Economics, Oxford University "These incisive essays dissecting neoliberal globalization provide highly significant information along with careful and penetrating analysis, subjecting claims of advocates and critics to the test of judiciously assembled empirical evidence. Moreover, they develop neglected perspectives that should prove invaluable to those seeking to dismantle illusions and deceptive presentations, and to discover the real human consequences of the dominant intellectual and policy paradigms of the past several decades. They are a very welcome contribution to the understanding of some of the most critical issues of the contemporary era. It is an outstanding work and a remarkably important book." -Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor, Retired, MIT "This book provides essential reading for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers wanting to understand the rapid social, health, and economic changes in today's world. It offers an excellent base for reflection on forces driving these changes as well as critical analyses of now widespread interpretations of their causes and consequences." -Walter Korpi, Professor of Social Policy, Swedish Institute for Social Research, Stockholm University "Never in our history have human beings enjoyed such good health; but never have so many persons suffered or died prematurely because of hunger, poverty, and avoidable diseases, and never have inequities in health been so deep and so evident. Vicente Navarro, internationally known as a champion of social justice, has assembled the best contributions from all over the world. This book appears at a time when health for all is being recognized as a fundamental human right and a touchstone of the civilization of any country. All those who work in this field may enjoy reading these essays and find a new stimulus for their activity." -Giovanni Berlinguer, Professor Emeritus, Sciences Faculty, University of Rome Member of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health..."This important book is packed full of evidence that challenges conventional economic wisdom surrounding the issue of globalization. The contributors succeed in their purpose of raising the alarm about the consequences of neoliberal economic policies for human development. The issues the book raises are legitimate concerns for public health: It would be a tragedy if nobody listens", -Margaret Whitehead, The Lancet Volume 371, April 5, 2008."Table of ContentsPART I What Is Neoliberalism? Baywood Publishing Company Inc A Cop Docs Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma
Book SynopsisCop Doc''s Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma Syndrome is written in response to the need for an advanced, specialized guide for clinicians to operationally define, understand, and responsibly treat complex post-traumatic stress and grief syndromes in the context of the unique varieties of police personality styles. The book continues where Rudofossi''s first book, Working with Traumatized Police Officer Patients, left off. Theory is wed to practice and practice to effective interventions with police officer-patients. The ''how'' and ''why'' of a clinician''s approach is made highly effective by understanding the distinct personality styles of officer-patients. Rudofossi''s theoretical approach segues into difficult examples that highlight each officer-patient''s eco-ethological field experience of loss in trauma, with a focus on enhancing resilience and motivation to - otherwise left disenfranchised. Thus, this original work expands the ecological-ethological existential analysis oTrade Review"One need not hold a Ph.D. or M.D. to appreciate the clinical sensitivity and useful insights that Dr. Rudofossi brings to this study of personality types of troubled police officers. He not only presents a classification model that is comprehensive in scope and rich in detail, but formulates a series of thoughtful treatment steps for use by experienced clinicians and novices alike." - Professor Theodore Millon, Ph.D., D.Sc., Dean and Scientific Director Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology "Following his acclaimed Working with Traumatized Police Officer-Patients, in which 'Doc' Daniel Rudofossi spelled out what we are most often treating in officer-patients, this new book takes the next step: it searches out, for perhaps the first time, the commonalities in whom we are treating. We are offered the most effective words for psychotherapy: "By understanding..." The author's dictum: By understanding the common features of each police officer personality, we can effectively treat that individual. Dr. Rudofossi is police officer-patient centered. While not eschewing complexities, he presents an expert guide to treating complex post-traumatic stress and grief syndromes in police officers with an evidenced-based approach. This is both health-enhancing and better policing." - Antoon A. Leenaars, Ph.D. Author, Psychotherapy with Suicidal People: A Person-Centered Approach "Once again, in this sequel to his earlier book on traumatized police officers, Dr. Rudofossi has blended theoretical and practical applications of psychology and law enforcement. His approach of identifying the five varieties of public safety personality styles provides critical information for both mental health practitioners working with law enforcement personnel and law enforcement managers. This is an excellent book that should be read by all who work with, or are interested in, law enforcement officers!" - Thomas Creelman, M.A., CEAP, Employee Assistance Program Coordinator, New York State Office of the Attorney General "With his brilliant mind, amazing writing skills, experiential background, and psychological insight, Dr. Rudofossi offers the gift of his expertise in his profoundly interesting new book, A Cop Doc's Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma Syndrome. A broad spectrum of readers will find complicated clinical theories coming alive with Dr. Rudofossi's use of case studies born in actual field experiences. This book promises to be stunningly useful in facilitating the healing process even when facing the most disenfranchising trauma." - Robert C Barnes, Ph.D., President, International Board of Directors Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy"Table of ContentsForeword by Dr. Allan W. Baywood Publishing Company Inc Connecting People with Technology Issues in
Book SynopsisThis book explores five important areas where technology affects society, and suggests ways in which human communication can facilitate the use of that technology.Usability has become a foundational discipline in technical and professional communication that grows out of our rhetorical roots, which emphasize purpose and audience. As our appreciation of audience has grown beyond engineers and scientists to lay users of technology, our appreciation of the diversity of those audiences in terms of age, geography, and other factors has similarly expanded. We are also coming to grips with what Thomas Friedman calls the 'flat world,' a paradigm that influences how we communicate with members of other cultures and speakers of other languages. And because most of the flatteners are either technologies themselves or technology-driven, technical and professional communicators need to leverage these technologies to serve global audiences.Similarly, we are inundated with information about world crisTrade Review"This is an outstanding collection of papers for use in a technical communication - and for technical communication practitioners who wish to learn about crucial issues and developments in the field. The major topics are, without exception, important. Individual papers address issues through a variety of methodologies, including case study." - Muriel Zimmerman, Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California, Santa Barbara "Editors Hayhoe and Grady have combined a wide range of topics into a single reference work that surveys the ever-growing field of technical communication. This anthology provides a clear snapshot of the space between today's technology and the people who use it." - Brenda Huettner, President, P-N Designs, Inc. "Too many people still see effective communication as a luxury - a useful but nonessential ingredient of products and processes. In contrast, this book nicely demonstrates the far-reaching impact that technical and professional communication can have on issues of relevance in today's world. As such, it should be an eye-opener for many readers in the field, notably students at all levels." - Jean-luc Doumont, Ph.D., Founding Partner, Principiae"Table of ContentsIntroduction: George F. Guilford Publications Counseling Cops
Book SynopsisGrounded in clinical research, extensive experience, and deep familiarity with police culture, this book offers highly practical guidance for psychotherapists and counselors. The authors vividly depict the pressures and challenges of police work and explain the impact that line-of-duty issues can have on officers and their loved ones. Numerous concrete examples and tips show how to build rapport with cops, use a range of effective intervention strategies, and avoid common missteps and misconceptions. A new preface in the paperback and e-book editions highlights the book's relevance in the context of current events and concerns about police-community relations. See also Kirschman's related self-help guide I Love a Cop, Third Edition: What Police Families Need to Know, an ideal recommendation for clients and theTrade ReviewWhether you work with many or few law enforcement clients, Counseling Cops is an essential addition to any therapist's resource library. Cops usually go to therapy for the problems caused by years of urban combat, but they won't talk about things that matter until they trust you. Kirschman, Kamena, and Fay give an in-depth understanding of police culture and what therapists need to know about building an alliance with a cop client. They offer treatment strategies, resources, and rich descriptions of the pressures and consequences of a law enforcement career. What can take years to learn about working with law enforcement officers, this book generously provides between two covers.--Stephanie Cress, LCSW, RN, Vice President, First Responder Support NetworkOne of the most comprehensive and useful books that I have read on police counseling. The authors write from real-life clinical experience and understand their clientele. As a researcher and former police officer, I highly recommend this book for psychologists, counselors, and any mental health professional who works with law enforcement officers.--John M. Violanti, PhD, School of Public Health and Health Professions, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York; 23-year veteran, New York State PoliceKirschman, Kamena, and Fay are respected pioneers in the area of providing mental health services to law enforcement personnel. It will rapidly accelerate the learning curve of clinicians working with our law enforcement professionals.--Kevin M. Gilmartin, PhD, author of Emotional Survival for Law EnforcementThe authors have been counseling cops for years, and their expertise is all-encompassing. The recaps at the end of each section offering concrete suggestions are especially helpful. This book is invaluable for every clinician who wants to counsel cops. It would be impossible to do a counseling session justice without knowing every aspect of the world in which the cop lives, moves, and works.--Rev. Jan Heglund, Chaplain, San Rafael (California) Police DepartmentThis is the ultimate guidebook against which all other police counseling books will be measured. The book covers issues cops struggle with every day--and presents those issues in plain language for every type of counselor or therapist. The authors have done a magnificent job of describing the psychological impact of police work and explaining both what to do and what not to do when counseling officers. Clinicians learn ways to avoid becoming overwhelmed in intense sessions and get useful examples, quotes, assessment tools, and questions to ask in different situations.--Allen R. Kates, author of CopShock: Surviving Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)Starting with chapter titles that pique the imagination and invite the reader to delve further, Drs. Kirschman, Kamena, and Fay cover the broad spectrum of police roles and their impact on individual officers and their families….Their treatment of law enforcement professionals reflects their professional and personal beliefs that police have a very difficult job, one more difficult than many realize….A 'must-read' for anyone who evaluates or treats cops, or who counsels their families.--from the Foreword by Ellen Scrivner, PhD, Executive Fellow, Police Foundation, Washington, DCThis is an evidence-based, savvy, eminently readable book on counseling police officers, other first responders, and their families. The authors are first-rate psychologists with the credentials and insider experience to connect readers to the daily grit, grind, and jitters that make this client population unique.--David M. Guilford Publications Play Therapy Interventions to Enhance Resilience
Book SynopsisThe importance of therapeutic play in helping children recover from adversity has long been recognized. This unique volume brings together experts on resilience, trauma, and play therapy to describe effective treatment approaches in this key area. The book begins by providing guiding principles for intervention and describing the specific properties of play that promote resilience. Subsequent chapters delve into clinical applications, including such strategies as storytelling and metaphors, sand play, art therapy, play therapy adaptations for school settings, group interventions, and the use of therapeutic writing. Rich case studies and vignettes demonstrate creative ways to bolster at-risk children's strengths and enhance their natural capacity to thrive.Trade Review"What an amazing book! This book reflects the belief that all children can rebound from significant setbacks, and the best way to reach them is through their hands and their hearts, making play therapy the ideal treatment modality. Rather than seeking to ameliorate symptoms, the practitioners in this book aspire to find, nurture, and expand children's 'islands of competence.' Even play therapists who have been practicing for years will learn a great deal from the resilience perspective. Chapter 1 alone is worth the price of the entire book."--Maurice J. Elias, PhD, Department of Psychology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey "A timely and impressive book that guides practitioners and students to use play as a mechanism to promote resilience in children. Helping young people develop a resilient mindset will equip them with the skills necessary to overcome bullying, grief, loss, trauma, and other adversities. The chapters are all written from a strengths-based perspective. I recommend this book for courses in school psychology, child clinical psychology, school counseling, and school social work. It is an indispensable tool for graduate students learning to conduct play therapy with children and a 'must-have' addition to the bookshelf of any child clinician."--Susan M. Swearer, PhD, Willa Cather Professor of Educational Psychology, University of Nebraska–Lincoln "The volume provides readers an opportunity to see how expert play therapists foster hope and resilience in the lives of children who have experienced trauma and other adversities. It will appeal not only to seasoned clinicians with an interest in play therapy, but also to graduate students and interns. I am grateful to the expert editors and contributors for this valuable resource."--Mark Katz, PhD, Learning Development Services, San Diego, California "Provides unique and valuable methods to harness the protective factors so vital for resilience. The book builds an excellent bridge between theory and practice."--Jack A. Naglieri, PhD, Research Professor, University of Virginia; Senior Research Scientist, Devereux Center for Resilient Children -Clinicians will discover this book inspires and supports their belief in the capacity of all people to find their way to recognition of their competencies--even in settings where the messages from others would declare otherwise.--Play Therapy Magazine, 12/1/2015ƒƒThis breakthrough book explores the newest play therapy techniques and interventions offered by experts in the field….The book is rich with new ideas and play therapy methods to facilitate healing and wellness, while bolstering the child's intrinsic resources, for optimal recovery and growth….If you are looking for a truly exceptional, clinically-sound, reference guide that offers unique resilience-focused applications for play therapy interventions with children, I strongly recommend this for your professional collection. Unlike other offerings in this area, this book sets itself apart by design. Far too much of the professional literature is devoted to simply discussing trauma cases. Instead, this book focuses on the more positive aspects of the therapeutic equation such as the resilience, strength, and 'islands of competence' in children, as well as their unbelievable optimism and spirit….This one-of-a-kind reference puts theoretical concepts into practice and will no doubt be an asset for anyone involved in play therapy and mental health interventions with children. *****--Doody's Review Service, 8/28/2015Table of ContentsI. His detailed 'how-to' instructions are grounded in theory, research, and extensive experience working with young children after trauma. This book should be in the hands of all clinicians working with young children and their caregivers."--Alison Salloum, PhD, LCSW, School of Social Work, University of South Florida “Scheeringa has almost single-handedly established the empirical study and diagnosis of PTSD in preschool children; the inclusion of a preschool PTSD diagnosis in DSM-5 is largely due to his foundational work. Years of clinical experience have been distilled into this highly accessible volume, which assumes little background knowledge and is backed by theory and careful empirical study. Scheeringa carefully explains both how to conduct assessments and therapy with traumatized young children and why to follow the structure he has outlined. Each section is illustrated with clear examples drawn from extensive real-world experience. I cannot exaggerate the value of this book to anyone who works with young children exposed to trauma--it will be the clinical manual of choice for this population for many years to come."--Richard Meiser-Stedman, PhD, DClinPsy, Department of Clinical Psychology, University of East Anglia, United Kingdom -The twelve sessions of PPT are each clearly laid out with defined goals, tasks to accomplish, and homework to complete before the next session….Among the most valuable components of the PPT manual are the case examples and sample dialogues that occur among the therapist, the child, and the caregiver.--School Social Work Journal, 10/2/2017ƒƒThis is a well-thought-out, carefully detailed treatment protocol, presented in a manualized fashion. The treatment provider is provided with clear, step-by-step instructions as well as helpful hints to deal with probable resistance and other foreseeable challenges. The authors consider aspects of trauma that are too frequently ignored: grief and loss and moral injury. Litz, Lebowitz, Gray, and Nash are to be commended for taking us to the next level of caring for our service members and veterans."--Carl A. Castro, PhD, School of Social Work, University of Southern California; Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) "Based on decades of clinical experience and scientific exploration, adaptive disclosure represents a novel approach to treatment. So few approaches exist for managing combat-related PTSD, making this book a welcome contribution. Adaptive disclosure holds great promise in its focus on a central problem for many military personnel: difficulty divulging the depths of the conflicts that emerge following traumatic experiences of war. Therapists of all disciplines will benefit from the compelling rationale and model of care presented here."--Terence M. Keane, PhD, National Center for PTSD, VA Boston Healthcare System, and Department of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine "The approach in this manual will advance our understanding and treatment of PTSD in military personnel and veterans. Litz et al. provide detailed direction to help clinicians identify key clinical issues and themes, including experiences of moral injury and traumatic loss. The book offers thoughtful and accessible guidance for implementing interventions to facilitate more complete healing and recovery. This invaluable resource is a 'must' for any clinician working with this population."--David Forbes, PhD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne; Director, Phoenix Australia--Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health "This unique book presents a highly innovative and clinically wise approach to addressing the three harms--traumatic loss, life threat, and moral injury--that often continue to trouble our returning veterans.
