Lexington Books Modernity Complex Societies and the Alphorn
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewRetracing the life and times of the Alphorn, from the Alps of Switzerland and Germany to the Netherlands and Japan, this fascinating book shows how often “traditional” instruments grow and expand their reach beyond their land of origin. It has been studied for years how people migrate and carry along their bag of musical memories, and it has been largely understood how regional repertoires themselves are often capable of disengaging from their native surroundings and become transnational. Charlotte Vignau helps us further understand how single musical instruments, even those that originally support a strong national and regional identity, are potential migrants; and may find a second lease of life in the hands of people who are culturally remote from their original habitat. Indeed, through the Alphorn, Charlotte Vignau offers a wide angle picture of how rich and complex the world of music really is today. This is a book for anyone interested in the musics of the world, and in the processes of culture contact and exchange. -- Marcello Sorce Keller, Institut für Musikwissenschaft, Universität BernDr. Vignau takes what might seem to be an instrumental curiosity and weaves around it a riveting web of inquiries about such things as nationalism, film, language, romanticism, ethnography and ultimately, the beauty of sound. A tour de force! -- Michael Beckerman, Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Music, New York UniversityThis study combines ethnomusicological cultural analysis and interpretation with emphases on history and comparison taken from cultural musicology. The result is a systematic and convincing narrative, explicated rationales, respectful and fruitful relationship with interlocutors, and as objective as possible conclusions, which may be, perhaps, recognized as an exemplary offspring of how ethnomusicology is done in the EU context. * International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: The Alphorn, Alphorn Performance and Alphorn Music: A National Symbol of Switzerland? Lexington Books Walking the Line
Book SynopsisAn insightful and wide-ranging look at one of America's most popular genres of music, Walking the Line: Country Music Lyricists and American Culture examines how country songwriters engage with their nation's religion, literature, and politics. Country fans have long encountered the concept of walking the line, from Johnny Cash's I Walk the Line to Waylon Jennings's Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line. Walking the line requires following strict codes, respecting territories, and, sometimes, recognizing that only the slightest boundary separates conflicting allegiances. However, even as the term acknowledges control, it suggests rebellion, the consideration of what lies on the other side of the line, and perhaps the desire to violate that code. For lyricists, the line presents a moment of expression, an opportunity to relate an idea, image, or emotion. These lines represent boundaries of their kind as well, but as the chapters in this volume indicate, some of the more successful country lyTrade ReviewSongs are the children of songwriters and, though each song carries the songwriter’s gene, each song—like each child—is an individual all its own. In this remarkable collection of essays, a group of writers examine songwriters and their songs; how they are born, nurtured and grow from a child to an independent adult. Walking the Line profiles songwriters and their offspring in a way that is intelligent, thoughtful, instructive, heart-felt, deep and long-lasting—just like a great song. -- Don Cusic, Belmont University"Like Dolly Parton's 'Coat of Many Colors', these diverse essays are carefully stitched together by Holmes and Harde to form a many-hued portrait of the lyrics and cultural meaning in country music song writing. As the collection clearly demonstrates, the best songwriters, many times social outsiders themselves, are more likely to color outside the cultural lines of their collective audience than to acquiesce to traditional themes and beliefs. An important addition to the collective knowledge of cultural creation and easily the best such collection since Tichi's Reading Country Music." -- George Lewis, University of the PacificThis book presents 14 essays, by a variety contributors, about 15 country-music lyricists. The order is roughly chronological, starting with Jimmie Rodgers and ending with Steve Earle. Though excerpts from the subjects' lyrics are quoted, complete lyrics are not provided. Instead, the contributors discuss the lyricists' works in their cultural context. It is common for country artists to perform songs that others wrote for them, but, interestingly, most of these essays concern lyrics that well-known artists such as Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, and Willie Nelson wrote, performed, and popularized themselves. The exception is Cindy Walker, who was extremely successful as a lyricist but little known as a performer. Most of the essayists, including Holmes and Harde, are professors of or specialists in English and history rather than music. It is thus understandable that their discussions focus on topics such as the dominant culture, regional history, and religious views that shaped the lyricists, without delving into matters of musical style. This book is suitable for for anyone interested in American popular music and popular culture. Summing Up: Recommended. Taylor & Francis Ltd White Boys White Noise Masculinities and 1980s
Book SynopsisTo what extent do indie masculinities challenge the historical construction of rock music as patriarchal? This key question is addressed by Matthew Bannister, involving an in-depth examination of indie guitar rock in the 1980s as the culturally and historically specific production of white men. Through textual analysis of musical and critical discourses, Bannister provides the first book-length study of masculinity and ethnicity within the context of indie guitar music within US, UK and New Zealand ''scenes''. Bannister argues that past theorisations of (rock) masculinities have tended to set up varieties of working-class deviance and physical machismo as ''straw men'', oversimplifying masculinities as ''men behaving badly''. Such approaches disavow the ways that masculine power is articulated in culture not only through representation but also intellectual and theoretical discourse. By re-situating indie in a historical/cultural context of art rock, he shows how masculine power canTrade Review’Solid, researched intellectual discourse on rock music, particularly punk and indie, is hard to come by, and Bannister treats his subject matter - which includes R.E.M., the Smiths, The Minutemen and Nirvana - with the same level of respect a classical music scholar would give Mozart or Bach. That's refreshing.’ Thrive ’Matthew Bannister's new title adds a precious new body of study to the relatively thin gathering of books about the male and maleness in rock music, as he unpicks the part that masculinity and masculine values have played in shaping both the rock discourse and our understanding of it... rich and informed...an impressively researched survey... a highly satisfying overview...’ Popular MusicTable of ContentsContents: Introduction - White boys...; Reviewing theories and representations of masculinities; Powerless power: masculine intellectualism and aesthetics; What does it mean to be alternative? Taylor & Francis Ltd Ritual and Music of North China Volume 2 Shaanbei
Book SynopsisThis second volume of Stephen Jones'' work on ritual and musical life in north China, again with accompanying downloadable resources, gives an impression of music-making in daily life in the poor mountainous region of Shaanbei, northwest China. It conveys some of the diverse musical activities there around 2000, from the barrage of pop music blaring from speakers in the bustling county-towns to the life-cycle and calendrical ceremonies of poor mountain villages. Based on the practice of grass-roots music-making in daily life, not merely on official images, the main theme is the painful maintenance of ritual and its music under Maoism, its revival with the market reforms of the 1980s, and its modification under the assaults of TV, pop music, and migration since the 1990s. The text is in four parts. Part One gives background to the area and music-making in society. Parts Two and Three discuss the lives of bards and shawm bands respectively, describing modifications in their ceremonial Trade Review‘… (a) fascinating book …breaks new ground by bringing us the real lives of real musicians’ John Gittings, Songlines (5 star rating)‘This volume is another major contribution from Jones to our understanding of the ritual and expressive culture of northern China … strong points include Jones’s careful attention to local dialectal usages and terminology; the presence in the index of Chinese characters for almost all names and terms in the text; the detailed description of ritual actions; in-depth discussion of financial aspects of the bards’ and shawm bands’ activities; serious consideration of "cassette culture"; and the liberal use of direct quotes from interviews. One gets a real sense of what the musicians think and how they express their views, as well as of individual life stories. This is a unique introduction to the ritual and music of a part of China we would never otherwise encounter, and provides invaluable comparative material.’ Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies‘It portrays the manipulation of Shaanbei music in two distinct waves: the propaganda of the 1940s and 50s, and the commercialization of the 1980s. With a familiarity that few others could approach, Jones shows how the actual performers viewed these as attempts by outsiders to expropriate their traditions. … The book eschews simple answers and ideal types, but instead shows the performers, their histories and decisions, in all their human complexity. … The DVD is beautifully produced and narrated … The DVD makes the book especially useful for undergraduate teaching, where it would make a fine accompaniment to films such as Yellow Earth, or to more theoretical but less empirically rich works on the interaction getween state and culture in modern China.’ The China Journal'Jones gives his readers a fascinating glimpse of the complicated relationships between ritual and music, between the state and the folk, and between the traditional and the modern in Shaanbei.'Asian MusicTable of ContentsContents: Foreword; Preface: perspectives and sources; Part 1 Introduction: Shaanbei society and its musics.
