Faber & Faber Woody Guthrie A Life
Book Synopsis ''A really great book.'' Bruce SpringsteenWith a foreword by Billy Bragg. The classic biography of the hugely influential American folk singer who inspired a generation of songwriters, including Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.Few artists have captured the American experience of their time as wholly as folk legend Woody Guthrie. Singer, songwriter and political activist, Guthrie drew a lifetime of inspiration from his roots on the Oklahoma frontier in the years before the Great Depression. His music -- scathingly funny songs and poignant folk ballads -- made heard the unsung life of field hands, migrant workers, and union organisers, and showed it worthy of tribute. Though his career was tragically cut short by the onset of a degenerative disease that ravaged his mind and body, the legacy of his life and music had already made him an American cultural icon, and has resounded with every generation of musician and music lover

Faber Music Ltd Christmas Quartetstart Level 1
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis is a set of eight of our best-loved Christmas carols, delightfully arranged. It is full of helpful tips such as warning, 'arco next' and 'pizz next' during rests, or to count carefully, over a tied note. Bars rests are counted out in the approved manner (one234/two234 etc). There are plenty of opportunities for audience participation with stamping of boots asked for, and shouting 'what do you want!' and 'go away!' in We Wish you a Merry Christmas. The mood of each carol is set with a sentence to be read and discussed, and there are many effects asked for ponticello playing (to make an icy-sound), harmonics, col legno, strumming, and opportunities to improvise (howling wind). Where a lead is needed from a player, it is specified, and the other parts marked 'look for a new lead'. The content is divided equally between the players. The parts are very clearly printed, with bar numbers, no fingering, and only essential bowing. This music is highly imaginative, and a very exciting start for young chamber music ethusiasts. If you have young pupils, this is a music for their school Christmas Concert, and to play on Christmas Day at home! European String Teachers Association, Winter 1999Table of ContentsOnce in royal David’s city; Good King Wenceslas; Away in a Manger; The Holly and the Ivy; Silent Night; O come, all ye faithful; Jingle Bells; We wish you a merry Christmas

Faber Music Ltd The Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology
Book SynopsisThe Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology is an essential collection of the greatest Christmas songs and carols, specially arranged for solo piano, for the intermediate pianist.Trade Review"I have recommended it to six of my students in the three days since the review copy arrived, which is unprecedented. And I anticipate that many more of my students will be enjoying this book in their lessons, home playing, and at my regular adult piano club for years to come. What impresses most of all is that all of the arrangements are both pianistic and genuinely musical. As such, and given the scope and scale of the book, The Faber Music Christmas Piano Anthology is not only a stunning success, but fills a unique spot on the music shelf. This is a book which has significantly raised the bar, instantly establishing itself as the new “must-have” Christmas music book. I predict it will sell like hot cakes (or artisan mince pies?) and it certainly deserves to – it’s absolutely brilliant! Outstanding." Andrew Eales, pianodao.com, October 2018 "Overall, it is very well-presented, and the music clearly laid out and typeset. I would suggest that the majority of the pieces in this volume will suit pianists at Grade 4 and above, and with such a wealth of material included, this book will last pianists for many years to come. Faber are quite right to describe it as ‘timeless’. It is excellent value for money, and a must-have for pianists this Christmas." Book SynopsisThe Language of Folk: Initial to Grade 4 offers a wealth of folk repertoire from around the British Isles and further afield, carefully selected and arranged to develop the key skills and vocal styles integral to folk song. Produced in association with The Sage Gateshead and its nationally renowned folk music programme.Trade ReviewIt is good that the introduction and notes recognise some inherent difficulties in notating folk songs, unaccompanied singing, ornamentation, embellishment of the vocal line and the importance of speech rhythms and respect for dialect words in making credible performances. The book tweaks the terms most frequently used in classical music for ornaments, using ‘flick’ for ‘mordent’ and ‘roll’ for ‘turn’ for example and this is refreshing. English Dance & Song Magazine, Autumn 2013 For those like me who come from a very ‘classical’ background, these books are an excellent eye-opener in to the vibrant world of the folk-singer. …..thanks are due to Kathryn Davidson and the Sage for devising the learning programme that has given rise to such inspiring and enlightening books. In my opinion they should definitely be in the library of every singing teacher. And not just to provide new repertoire for the ABRSM folk-song requirements! Random House USA Inc Dont Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You
Book SynopsisNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The iconic singer-songwriter and three-time Grammy winner opens up about her traumatic childhood in the Deep South, her years of being overlooked in the music industry, and the stories that inspired her enduring songs in this “bracingly candid” (The Wall Street Journal) memoir. “[Williams’s] memoir transmutes the wisdom, pain, and hard-won joy of her life into stories that stick with you.”—VogueLucinda Williams’s rise to fame was anything but easy. Raised in a working-class family in the Deep South, she moved from town to town each time her father—a poet, a textbook salesman, a professor, a lover of parties—got a new job, totaling twelve different places by the time she was eighteen. Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. But she was also born a fighter, and she would develop a voice that has captivated millions. In Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You, Williams takes readers through the events that shaped her music—from performing for family friends in her living room to singing at local high schools and colleges in Mexico City, to recording her first album with Folkway Records and headlining a sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall. She reveals the inspirations for her unforgettable lyrics, including the doomed love affairs with “poets on motorcycles” and the gothic southern landscapes of the many different towns of her youth, including Macon, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Williams spent years working at health food stores and record stores during the day so she could play her music at night, and faced record companies who told her that her music was not “finished,” that it was “too country for rock and too rock for country.” But her fighting spirit persevered, leading to a hard-won success that spans seventeen Grammy nominations and a legacy as one of the greatest and most influential songwriters of our time.Raw, intimate, and honest, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You is an evocative reflection on an extraordinary woman’s life journey.

University of Wales Press Welsh Ballads of the French Revolution
Book SynopsisWelsh Ballads of the French Revolution (1793 - 1815) is an edition of ballads composed in the Welsh language during a momentous period in the history of Western civilization. The texts respond to the upheavals of the Revolutionary decade and its afermath, as people in Britain began to react to the violent deaths of the French monarchs.Trade ReviewThe vibrancy and colour of the Welsh ballads of the French Revolution are brought to life in this ground-breaking anthology edited and translated by Ffion Mair Jones. Offering a detailed analysis of ballads responding to the upheavals of the French Revolution, this volume reveals how the traumatic events of the period were interpreted and presented to Welsh audiences at the time. Ffion Mair Jones argues that despite being overwhelmingly loyal to the British crown, these ballads are far from being monotonous in their conservatism and she uncovers the historical and contemporary impulses that encouraged loyalty and discouraged dissent among the popular poets of the day. By making these ballads accessible to a wider audience, this volume will shed new light on Welsh popular responses to the most dramatic and important event in eighteenth-century Europe.
