Book Synopsis‘Still seen as the classic games collection’ – English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius' – The Compulsive Reader One of the most important chess books ever written, reissued in celebration of a chess genius, Bobby Fischer. The American takes the reader through 60 of his games, describing his thoughts, the intricacies behind his and his opponent's strategies, the tactical justification of moves and the psychological battle in each one. You'll find beautifully simple positional play by out-of-this-world combinations that are just breathtaking. Fischer played nearly all of these games as a grandmaster so they are at the very highest level, but his lucid commentary makes every move and idea both accessible and understandable, meaning that every player will learn huge amounts from this book. It is an essential for each chess enthusiast, competitor and professional alike. The controversial alterations that were made to Bobby Fischer's words in the last edition have been omitted in this book, so only the author's own words are expressed, giving a true insight into one of the most gifted, troubled and controversial minds of the 20th century.Trade Review‘Still seen as the classic games collection’ English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius... There are masterpieces here aplenty, undoubtedly, they will give pleasure to all who love chess.' • The School of Life Press Know Yourself: cards for self-exploration

Book SynopsisIt’s hard to understand who we really are: what we want, how we feel and why we react as we do. This lack of self-knowledge can be trouble, for it makes us get into the wrong relationships, pick unsatisfactory jobs or spend money unwisely. No wonder Socrates summed up all the counsel of philosophy in just two words: ‘Know Yourself’. These cards are designed to assist us in a journey of self-knowledge; they present us with a range of ideas and questions that can help us to understand ourselves better. Each card carries an exercise on one side and a piece of analysis on the reverse to help you gain insight and clarity on that ever elusive subject: yourself. Example Questions: Who are you? What happened to you in childhood? What is the meaning of life?

  • The School of Life Press The Confessions Game

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom adolescence onwards, one of the great struggles we face is how to reconcile our own desires with those we find socially acceptable. The best encounters with friends are those where we can talk honestly about what’s going on in our lives, sharing triumphs, joys, fears and longings - without the usual shyness or reserve. This game guarantees that the warmest, most fascinating conversations won’t have to be left to chance. With the help of a dice and some cards, the game asks participants to answer a series of questions around career, sex, money, relationships, family, gently inviting everyone to share important bits of themselves in an intimate and playful atmosphere. By thinking of confessions as a game – as a sociable and exploratory activity, as opposed to a risky affair – the cards prompt us to open ourselves up to interesting and exhilarating conversations, allow us to be a little more honest around the most intimate aspects of ourselves. Example Questions: What did you call your partner in your most heated argument? In your most depressed moods, what do you tell yourself about your career? What are you ashamed of people knowing about you and money? Describe in some detail the first time you had sex. What do you hate most about your children?

New In Chess 100 Endgames You Must Know: Vital Lessons for

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNew (4th) and improved edition of an all-time classic. The good news about endgames is: there are relatively few endings you should know by heart. Once you know these endings, that's it. Your knowledge never goes out of date! The bad news is that, all the same, the endgame technique of most players is deficient. Modern time-controls make matters worse: there is simply not enough time to delve deep into the position. Jesus de la Vila debunks the myth that endgame theory is complex and he teaches you to steer the game into a position you are familiar with. This book contains only those endgames that: show up most frequently are easy to learn contain ideas that are useful in more difficult positions. Your performance will improve dramatically because this book brings you: simple rules detailed and lively explanations many diagrams clear summaries of the most important themes dozens of tests.Trade Review"If you really have no patience for endgames, at least read Jesus de la Villa's '100 Endgames You Must Know'." -- Gary Walters Chess "The greatest strength of the book: breaking things down into well-worded chunks of easily digestible information." March Towers Chess Reviews "There's not much to say about it - you just have to buy it and read it! De la Villa does a truly wonderful job of explaining useful endgames in a calm measured manner that is clear enough for any strength of player to understand while still being interesting for stronger players. If you've never read an endgame book before, this is the one you should start with." -- Matthew Sadler, Grandmaster, former British Champion "Former Women World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk said she had really enjoyed De la Villa's '100 Endgames You Must Know' and had made flashcards out of the 100 positions. One side of the card had the position, the solution was written out on the reverse, and she quizzed herself until she knew all 100." -- Elisabeth Vicary USCF Online "Though Nunn's comments are clear and to the point, I found De la Villa's discussions easier to digest." -- Ted Greiner, British Correspondence Chess Association, Comparing '100 Endgames' with John Nunn's 'Understanding Endgames' "De la Villa does the job quite well. He emphasizes the practical and prefers understanding to memorization." -- John Donaldson, International Master jeremysilman.com "A clear exposition of the most important endgames, with exercises to test your knowledge." British Chess Magazine "The instructional explanations, the many diagrams, and the pleasant presentation make this endgame book an interesting publication for club players with a rating from 1600." Max Euwe Centre, Amsterdam "An excellent book to enhance your endgame skills." -- Johan Hut Gooi-en Eemlander Daily Newspaper "Every clubplayer should study this splendid book." -- B.H. Wilders Nederlands Dagblad "The layout and explanation both stand out for their clarity." CHESS Magazine "I like it a lot. It may be the first chess book since more than 25 years I will study thoroughly."
