Bloomsbury Publishing PLC In Time O Strife
Book SynopsisThere's nae power on earth can crush the men who can sing on a day like this.A powerful re-imagining of Joe Corrie's neglected classic about a Fife mining community during the General Strike. To raise funds for the soup kitchens feeding the miners and their starving families, Corrie wrote In Time O'' Strife in 1926 whilst on strike himself, exposing the brutal lives of a family staring hunger and defeat in the face. Some 87 years later, Graham McLaren has adapted, designed and directed this rarely performed classic play.Created by Graham McLaren (Men Should Weep, A Christmas Carol), the production uses fragments of Corrie's other plays, poems and songs, celebrating his ability as a writer and his contribution to Scottish culture. This edition pairs Corrie''s original text with the script created by McLaren''s adaptation process.Trade ReviewGraham McLaren has adapted the original text and interwoven fragments of Corrie’s other plays, poems and songs to create a celebration of his oeuvre * Courier *A memorably angry, vivid and theatrical retelling of a vital story in Scottish history . . . It's an exhilarating experience, this In Time O' Strife, and not to be missed. * Scotsman *The meeting of music, dance and drama is frequently exhilarating . . . the production has a rare political anger. * Guardian *Corrie's characters personify the stark dilemma faced by the striking miners . . . an intensely powerful production, though, brilliantly performed by a fine ensemble. * The Times *

Book Synopsis''This is the biography - truthful, sympathetic and thorough - that Coward deserves''DAILY TELEGRAPHThe voice, the dressing-gown, the cigarette in its holder, remain unmistakable. There is rarely a week when one of Private Lives, Hay Fever, and Blithe Spirit is not in production somewhere in the world. Phrases from Noël Coward''s songs - Mad About The Boy, Mad Dogs and Englishman - are forever lodged in the public consciousness. He was at one point the most highly paid author in the world. Yet some of his most striking and daring writing remains unfamiliar. As T.S. Eliot said, in 1954, there are things you can learn from Noël Coward that you won''t learn from Shakespeare.Coward wrote some fifty plays and nine musicals, as well as revues, screenplays, short stories, poetry, and a novel. He was both composer and lyricist for approximately 675 songs. Louis Mountbatten''s famous tribute argued that, while there were greater comedian

Headfield Publishing Final Curtain Call?: A History of Vulnerable
Book SynopsisIn 2022, my first book, ‘Fire! Fire! The Theatre’s on Fire’, was published. It focused on the devastating effect of theatres impacted by fire. It was nominated for ‘The STR Theatre Book Prize 2022’ which is awarded each year by the Society for Theatre Research. I was delighted with the compliments I received from the many people who bought my first book. Hopefully they will be just as complimentary about my second book! The chosen subject for this book are theatres which are still standing, (just!), but are extremely vulnerable. The majority of these theatres are identified in the official ‘Theatres at Risk Register’ published annually. This was created in 2006 and it records theatres that are in need of considerable help, effort and support from many organisations. If they do not receive this they will be lost forever. Thankfully, having had the much needed support, some theatres are no longer on this list. My first experience of a theatre closure was the sudden demise of my local theatre, ‘Dewsbury Empire’ in March 1955 and the life long effect it had on me, my family, the community, the town and the theatre world in general. As a tribute to all the hard work that the numerous theatre appreciation societies are carrying out, I have selected fifteen theatres and have completed extensive research on their history as well as including the now infamous ‘Did You Know…?’ gossip section! I sincerely hope that the members of the ‘Save the Theatre’ societies are successful in their magnificent efforts and that we see many more ‘Theatres At Risk’ saved for posterity. Thank you to you all for the marvellous efforts you are making in preserving these theatres and I would ask readers of this book to join me in assisting or donating to these good causes whenever possible.Table of ContentsBRIGHTON - HIPPODROME, BURNLEY - EMPIRE, DERBY - HIPPODROME, DONCASTER - GRAND, DUNDEE - KINGS, GREAT YARMOUTH - REGENT, HALIFAX - THEATRE ROYAL, MANCHESTER - THEATRE ROYAL, MORECAMBE - WINTER GARDENS, PLYMOUTH - PALACE, SALFORD - VICTORIA, SOUTHPORT - OPERA HOUSE, STREATHAM HILL THEATRE, SWANSEA - PALACE, WALSALL - IMPERIAL

Nick Hern Books How Plays Work
Book SynopsisIn How Plays Work, distinguished playwright David Edgar examines the mechanisms and techniques which dramatists throughout the ages have employed to structure their plays and to express their meaning. Written for playwrights and playgoers alike, Edgar's analysis starts with the building blocks of whole plays – plot, character-creation, genre and structure – and moves on to scenes and devices. He shows how plays share a common architecture without which the uniqueness of their authors' vision would be invisible. How Plays Work is both a masterclass for playwrights and playmakers and a fascinating guide to the anatomy of drama. In this revised edition, Edgar brings the book right up to date with analyses of many recent plays, as well as explorations of emerging genres and new innovations in playwriting practice. Faber & Faber 1606
Book Synopsis1606: William Shakespeare and the Year of Lear traces Shakespeare''s life and times from the autumn of 1605, when he took an old and anonymous Elizabethan play, The Chronicle History of King Leir, and transformed it into his most searing tragedy, King Lear.1606 proved to be an especially grim year for England, which witnessed the bloody aftermath of the Gunpowder Plot, divisions over the Union of England and Scotland, and an outbreak of plague. But it turned out to be an exceptional one for Shakespeare, unrivalled at identifying the fault-lines of his cultural moment, who before the year was out went on to complete two other great Jacobean tragedies that spoke directly to these fraught times: Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra.Following the biographical style of 1599, a way of thinking and writing that Shapiro has made his own, 1606: William Shakespeare and the Year of Lear promises to be one of the most significant and accessible works on Shakespeare in the decade to come

Oxford University Press Inc Cary Grant the Making of a Hollywood Legend
Book SynopsisA definitive new account of the professional and personal life of one of Hollywood''s most unforgettable, influential stars.Archie Leach was a poorly educated, working-class boy from a troubled family living in the backstreets of Bristol. Cary Grant was Hollywood''s most debonair film star--the embodiment of worldly sophistication. Cary Grant: The Making of a Hollywood Legend tells the incredible story of how a sad, neglected boy became the suave, glamorous star many know and idolize. The first biography to be based on Grant''s own personal papers, this book takes us on a fascinating journey from the actor''s difficult childhood through years of struggle in music halls and vaudeville, a hit-and-miss career in Broadway musicals, and three decades of film stardom during Hollywood''s golden age. Leaving no stone unturned, Cary Grant delves into all aspects of Grant''s life, from the bitter realities of his impoverished childhood to his trailblazing role in Hollywood as a film star who defied the studio system and took control of his own career. Highlighting Grant''s genius as an actor and a filmmaker, author Mark Glancy examines the crucial contributions Grant made to such classic films as Bringing Up Baby (1938), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Notorious (1946), An Affair to Remember (1957), North by Northwest (1959), Charade (1963) and Father Goose (1964). Glancy also explores Grant''s private life with new candor and insight throughout the book''s nine sections, illuminating how Grant''s search for happiness and fulfillment lead him to having his first child at the age of 62 and embarking on his fifth marriage at the age of 77. With this biography--complete with a chronological filmography of the actor''s work--Glancy provides a definitive account of the professional and personal life of one of Hollywood''s most unforgettable, influential stars.Trade ReviewScrupulously researched... Interweaving Grant's personal life with his career, Glancy provides the kind of detailed production histories and nuanced close readings of Grant's performances that will appeal to die-hard Cary Grant fans and film studies academics alike. * Charlotte Crofts, Open Screens *The volume is well indexed and the text fully supported by endnotes and a generous bibliography... Glancy's account is full, readable and scholarly. * John Stevens, Transactions *As a star biography it sets new standards of scholarship... It will become a definitive account of Grant, providing a judiciously balanced and peceptive evaluation of his intervowen personal and professional life, elucidated in pellucid prose whose elegance mirrors its subject. * Andrew Spicer, Archives *Glancy's account is full, readable and scholarly and it is confidently predicted that this particular quarry is now closed. * Josh Stevens, Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society *Offering glimpses of Grant both inside and outside of studio walls, Glancy succeeds in culling together a cohesive book based upon Grant's personal papers ...if the reader is not familiar with the breath of Grant's filmography, Glancy's book steps in as a guide through Grant's many works. * Annette Bochenek, Hometowns to Hollywood *The definitive biography: forensic, myth-busting, and psychologically fine-tuned. Both a well-written work of scholarship and an entertaining ride through the life and work of one of Hollywood's most fascinating stars. * Mark Kidel, filmmaker and writer *Mark Glancy's detailed biography carefully pieces together the actor's early life, from the day-dreaming teenager's expulsion at school to his life in music hall and his early struggles in New York... before his cinema stardom... a first-rate study of a star of cinemas golden age. * Martin Chilton, Independent *[an] exemplary biography * David Thomson, London Review of Books *Cary Grant has been the subject of so much gossip over the years so it is pleasant to read a book that takes an unsensational look at a Hollywood great. * Paul Donnelley, Daily Express *Glancy's years of research reveal themselves not just in the exceptionally detailed retelling of the Grant story, but in the scrupulous examination of conflicting sources... first-rate biography * Pamela Hutchinson, Sight & Sound *No other Grant biography has probed beneath the actor's tuxedo elegance with the urgency, critical acumen and basic common sense that are on display in Cary Grant: The Making of a Hollywood Legend. It's exceptional book. * Tom Ryan, Senses of Cinema *In contrast to typical celebrity biographies which take the tone of a gossipy exposé, Glancy's book feels balanced, well-researched... The author treats his subject with polite respect and admiration. * Lani Gonzalez, Book and Film Globe *It's a good, thorough read and may hint at a change in the winds of how we look at this famously private, famously gorgeous and underrated movie star. * Roger Moore, Movie Nation *Glancy is a good writer and storyteller... [his] approach is measured and illuminating. * Tom Ryan, The Australian *an exceedingly well-researched book... riveting throughout... This is certainly one of the best books about the golden era of Hollywood that I have ever read, and I recommend it to anyone interested in films. * Mel Cooper, Plays to See *By contrast with some of his predecessors, Glancy does a superb job of shining light on as much of Grant's life as can be understood without bogging down in unnecessary detail. * Dave Luhrssen, Shepherd Express *A solid biography * David Pitt, Booklist *A thorough and thoughtful biography... An excellent portrait that emphasizes the man more than the movie star. * Peter Thornell, Library Journal *Mark Glancy has given the beloved star a deservedly respectful treatment. He offers a detailed and interesting biography which does not shy away from the controversies in Grant's life. However, the information is presented in a factual, non-salacious manner that is very readable. * Booked Solid with Virginia C *Most biographies of Hollywood Slebs are usually hagiographies or a collection of salacious stories... So it was with relief that I found Glancy's book does not fall into this trap but takes time to explore and research Cary Grant as a serious subject for a biographer... I so enjoyed reading this book and found it totally absorbing. Mark Glancy goes into detail about Cary's acting and role in all of his films, leaving nothing out and so the reader can appreciate and follow his film career alongside his personal life. * Elaine Simpson-Long, Random Jottings *Table of ContentsPreface Part One: Archie Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Part Two: Tumbler Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Part Three: Matinee Idol Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Part Four: Cary Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Chapter 16 Part Five: American Chapter 17 Chapter 18 Chapter 19 Part Six: Movie-Made Man Chapter 20 Chapter 21 Chapter 22 Part Seven: Truth Seeker Chapter 23 Chapter 24 Chapter 25 Part Eight: Survivor Chapter 26 Chapter 27 Part Nine: Legend Chapter 28 Chapter 29 Chapter 30 Sources Notes Filmography

Yale University Press The Letters of Cole Porter
Book SynopsisTrade Review“[A] gorgeous book”—Roger Lewis, Daily Mail (Book of the Week)“[An] extensive commentary”—Clive Davis, The Times“an intimidating marvel of scholarship. . . . The Letters of Cole Porter amounts to the last word [on Porter], a work as disjointed and delightful as any of Porter’s unforgettable songs.”—David Kirby, Washington Post“Porter’s ghost could not ask for better care than he has been given in The Letters of Cole Porter . . . . Laid out with a meticulous scholarly apparatus, as though this were the correspondence of Grover Cleveland, every turn in the songwriter’s story is deep-dived for exact chronology, and every name casually dropped by Porter gets a worried, explicatory footnote.”—Adam Gopnik, New Yorker “The letters [. . .] reveal previously hidden details about the life and work of Cole Porter. [. . .] This extensive collection of letters uncovered by the researchers – most of which are being published for the first time – feature Cole’s correspondence with stars such as Irving Berlin, Ethel Merman and Orson Welles, as well as his friends and lovers”—Bigstamp“It is a thought-provoking portrait of a brave, well-intentioned, if often misguided queen”—Gareth Russell, The Times“Suavely edited by Cliff Eisen and Dominic McHugh [. . .] so detailed and precise that anyone wanting to write the story of Porter’s life could start here”—Christopher Bray, Spectator“This is an amazing feat of collation [. . .] brilliant scholarship”—Oliver Soden, Literary Review “Cole Porter was considered one of the greatest songwriters of his time, and the originality, wit, and artistry, of both his music and his lyrics, have lost none of their lustre in the ensuing years. Yet his personal life has been clouded in mystery and gossip, much of it exaggerated or simply untrue. This new book offers the perfect solution: by reproducing a rich selection of Porter's letters from across his life and activities, the editors have allowed him to speak in his own words.”—Kevin Kline, actor and singer“‘Well, did you evah!’ Cole Porter’s letters are full not just of delightful gossip but of the detail of working on Broadway and in Hollywood during the golden age of the American musical. ‘What a swell party it is!’—or at least was for Porter moving through high society across several continents. His words read as gloriously as his music sounds.”—Tim Carter, author of “Oklahoma!” The Making of an American Musical“The considerable legacy of Cole Porter remains a powerful force in American music and this new collection of his letters is revelatory. It’s the closest we’ll ever get to an autobiography and is fascinating how a group of letters, sometimes written casually, collectively unmask previously hidden details about the man.”—Michael Feinstein, singer and Ambassador of The Great American Songbook“A magnificently researched, compulsively readable, and delightfully “de-lovely” volume.”—Geoffrey Block, author of Richard Rodgers“Essential to understanding the private man behind the public myths Porter himself so persistently perpetuated.”—Kim H. He carved his own path ... and he was a torchbearer for all the excellent Irish comics who have followed in recent years.' However, be warned...the sheer volume of professional gold within is more than one person can shovel in a sitting...This book could be subtitled "Everything Mr Shelley has ever experienced and thought about lighting in his long and illustrious career."...the whole book is an avalanche of practical advice, notes, tips, pro tips, detail, So much detail. This is the value right here, folks.'Rob Sayer, On Stage Lighting'The beauty of A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting has always been that it takes the designer and brings them down to the nitty gritty. The wonder of the third edition is that you now have expanded resources to communicate not only to the beginning lighting student, but to the 201, 301, and 401 levels as well. I have students that carry this book through multiple levels of courses and by the end come out with an understanding that is unmatched in terms of executing a comprehensive design from top to bottom. The expanded sections help clarify complicated concepts seamlessly. I require this text in all of my lighting classes and the students get so excited to go to conferences and meet "the REAL STEVE SHELLEY" in person. He's like a super-star to them and this insightful textbook is the reason.'Ruth Hutson'Several months ago, I received a call from a university student wanting advice on a career in stage lighting...We discussed approaches to design and useful software, but when she asked what she should read to learn more, I recommended Steve Shelley's A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting, second edition. It was the best book I knew about how to light the stage and earn a living as a lighting designer. Now there is a better book: A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting, third edition...I would recommend it for any instructor teaching stage lighting at any level. There is a lot in this book that can stimulate thoughts about what a lighting design should be, how one goes about practically realizing a design, and about working as part of an artistic team in a venture that has to fit a budget...it would be a great gift any time of the year, whether for an ambitious student or for yourself.' Karl G. Ruling, Protocol'The scope and breadth of the A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting, Third Edition make it equally useful for the emerging young designer needing reference material, the experienced professional looking for new perspectives, and the seasoned designer looking for new tips, reminders of shortcuts, or inspiration to be a little more organized and prepared for the task at hand. The examples of plots, sections, paperwork, cue masters, magic sheets, focus charts, and working drawings are excellent resources. The updates and expansions make A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting, Third Edition a valuable addition to your theatre library, even if you have a previous version of the book.'Ellen E. Book SynopsisFrom the authors of the successful Grand-Guignol and London’s Grand Guignol - also published by UEP – this book includes translations of a further eleven plays, adding significantly to the repertoire of Grand-Guignol plays available in the English language. Trade Review From reviews of Grand-Guignol: The French Theatre of Horror (UEP, 2002) ‘Richard J. Hand and Michael Wilson . . . manage in a number of telling ways to make the subject their own. . . . Hand and Wilson’s main interest in Grand Guignol is . . . that of present-day theatre practitioners seeking to understand how these pieces might be able to work for fresh audiences. . . . they also prove themselves to be highly astute when it comes to examining these works in the light of contemporary (especially post-Freudian) critical theory. . . . performance practice is continually interrogated by critical and historical insight.’ (Gothic Studies, August 2003) ‘… the genre has left more of a mark on British and American culture than we may imagine.’ (Gothic Studies, May 2004) From reviews of London’s Grand Guignol and the Theatre of Horror (UEP, 2007) ‘...Richard J. Hand and Michael Wilson, who have previously written on the French Grand Guignol for this excellent series from the University of Exeter Press, now turn to the English variant...’ ‘...London’s Grand Guignol is a fine introduction to a neglected corner of the twentieth-century arts world.’ (Times Literary Supplement, 18 April 2008) ‘...London’s Grand Guignol allows Hand and Wilson to make a persuasive case for Grand Guignol’s place not only in modern theatre history, but also in the film history of thrillers and horror films. This book will be useful as a hands-on theatre history and practice text for programs where one might imagine offering students an opportunity to apply their creativity to the same challenges Jose Levy faced.’ (Theatre Survey, Vol. 50/2, November 2009) Table of ContentsPreface A note on the scripts Section I: A Brief History of the Théâtre du Grand-Guignol Section II: The Grand-Guignol Laboratory Section III: Prefaces and Plays First Programme The Haunted House (La Maison hantée) by Marc Bonis-Charancle The Kama Sutra or Never Play with Fire… (Kama Soutra, ou Il ne faut pas joer avec le feu) by Régis Gignoux Blind Man’s Buff by Charles Hellem and Pol d’Estoc The Light in the Tomb (Gott mit uns!
