    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first book to provide an overview of how Muslim activists are responding on the ground to the global environmental crisis. The detrimental effects of environmental degradation are felt most severely by the world''s poor, a disproportionate number of whom are Muslims. Unfortunately, governments of Muslim societies have been slow to respond to environmental problems, while opposition movements as well have mostly chosen to focus on other issues. Nevertheless, environmental awareness and activism are growing throughout the Muslim world. This book offers chapters by leading Muslim environmentalists which survey environmental initiatives in Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Malaysia. Issues are detailed pointing out both successes and failures and describing the unique challenges facing the world''s very diverse Muslim societies in striving to balance development and social justice with preserving the integrity of the earth''s life support systems.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe preservation and careful management of the environment and of natural resources and recycling or the processing of used or abandoned materials for use in creating new products must become key parts of the equation for the Earth''s continued sustainable development. At the present time, most developed countries are massively wasteful throughout almost all sectors of the economy ranging from energy use to consumer lifestyles. One of the main obstacles to conservation and recycling of resources is the lack in most countries of national mindsets encouraging such practices as well as the infrastructures to support their carrying out. This book presents important research in this frontal field.

  • Environmental Biodegradation Research Focus

Nova Science Publishers Inc Environmental Biodegradation Research Focus

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis new book is devoted to leading-edge research on environmental biodegradation which is the destruction of organic compounds by microorganisms. Microorganisms, particularly bacteria, are responsible for the decomposition of both natural and synthetic organic compounds in nature. Mineralisation results in complete conversion of a compound to its inorganic mineral constituents (for example, carbon dioxide from carbon, sulphate or sulphide from organic sulphur, nitrate or ammonium from organic nitrogen, phosphate from organophosphates, or chloride from organochlorine). Since carbon comprises the greatest mass of organic compounds, mineralisation can be considered in terms of CO2 evolution. Radioactive carbon-14 (14C) isotopes enable scientists to distinguish between mineralisation arising from contaminants and soil organic matter. However, mineralisation of any compound is never 100% because some of it (10-40% of the total amount degraded) is incorporated into the cell mass or products that become part of the amorphous soil organic matter, commonly referred to as humus. Thus, biodegradation comprises mineralisation and conversion to innocuous products, namely biomass and humus. Primary biodegradation is more limited in scope and refers to the disappearance of the compound as a result of its biotransformation to another product. Compounds that are readily biodegradable are generally utilised as growth substrates by single microorganisms. Many of the components of petroleum products (and frequent ground-water contaminants), such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, are utilised by many genera of bacteria as sole carbon sources for growth and energy.

  • Nova Science Publishers Inc Ecosystem Ecology Research Trends

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEcosystem ecology is the integrated study of biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems and their interactions within an ecosystem framework. This science examines how ecosystems work and relates this to their components such as chemicals, bedrock, soil, plants, and animals. A major focus of ecosystem ecology is on functional processes, ecological mechanisms that maintain the structure and services produced by ecosystems. These include primary productivity (production of biomass), decomposition, and trophic interactions. Studies of ecosystem function have greatly improved human understanding of sustainable production of forage, fibre, fuel, and provision of water. Functional processes are mediated by regional-to-local level climate, disturbance, and management thus ecosystem ecology provides a powerful framework for identifying ecological mechanisms that interact with global environmental problems, especially global warming and degradation of surface water. This book presents the latest developments in the field from around the world.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA major part of the energy debate is whether to approve energy development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in north-eastern Alaska, and if so, under what conditions, or whether to continue to prohibit development to protect the area''s biological resources. ANWR is rich in fauna, flora and commercial oil potential. Its development has been debated for over 40 years, but increasing gasoline and natural gas prices, terrorist attacks and infrastructure damage from hurricanes have intensified the debate. Current law forbids energy leasing in ANWR. This book provides a summary of legislative attempts to address the issues of energy development and preservation in the Refuge. ANWR consists of 19 million acres in north-east Alaska. The Refuge and especially the coastal plain, is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. The presence of caribou, polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves and migratory birds, and many other species in a nearly undisturbed state has led some to call the area "America''s Serengeti". This book covers, first, the economic and geological factors that have triggered new interest in development, followed by the philosophical, biological and environmental quality factors that have triggered opposition to it.

  • Geoinformatics for Natural Resource Management

Nova Science Publishers Inc Geoinformatics for Natural Resource Management

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA fundamental requirement of Agenda 21 of UNCED is to support sustainable development while safeguarding the Earth''s environment. This requires optimal management of natural resources which depends on the availability of reliable and timely information at the global, national, regional and local scales. One such technology, "Geoinformatics", consisting of Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS) is source of reliable and timely information needed for natural resource management, environmental protection and addressing issues related to sustainable development. It offers a powerful tool for resource assessment, mapping, monitoring, modelling, management etc. It is also capable to make use of recent developments in the digital integration of human reasoning, data and dynamic models. These tools have been available for past three decades. Many institutions and organisations are carrying out various research and operational applications of direct relevance particular to natural resource management. However, there are still limitations in understanding the underlying science and research elements, as there are larger questions of capacity building to use geoinformatics in natural resource management and associated sustainable development applications. These programs also find gaps between the theoretical concepts and the operational utilisation of these tools. This could be solved by providing wide range of applications and prospective potential of this technology to the students and research community in this area. "Geoinformatics for Natural Resource Management" contains chapters written by noted researchers and experts. The focus emerged with filling a gap in the available literature on the subject by bringing together the concepts, theories and experiences of the experts in this field.

Book SynopsisGlobal change stressors, including climate change and variability and changes in land use, are major drivers of ecosystem alterations. Invasive species, which are non-native species that cause environmental or economic damages or human-health impacts, also contribute to ecosystem changes. Invasive species are a major issue both ecologically and economically, and threaten native species, sometimes to the point of extinction. The interactions between stressors and invasive species, although not well understood, may exacerbate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, and likewise, climate change may enable further invasions. This book reviews available literature on climate-change effects on aquatic invasive species (AIS) and examines state-level AIS management activities.

Book SynopsisBalancing the capacity enhancing needs of the national airspace system with the need to protect the environment can be challenging. The FAA estimates that the annual number of passengers travelling by air in the United States will grow from 750 million in 2012 to over 1 billion by 2023. It also forecasts a corresponding 20 percent increase in the number of flights, which could add to existing flight delays and air traffic congestion. Even while the aviation system has grown and continues to grow, airports have sought to limit the environmental impacts generated by their construction and operations - such as noise, water, air, and waste pollution - in part, to meet applicable legal requirements. However, airports'' environmental impacts have been a source of friction with neighbouring communities. This book addresses the actions that airports have taken to reduce the environmental impacts of airport operations and development; and the strategies they can adopt to mitigate delays in implementing capital projects and operational changes.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNo modern technology truly emulates the science of nature. Yet today, some of the most important technological breakthroughs have been mere manifestations of the linearisation of nature science: nature linearised by focusing only on its external features. Today, computers process information exactly opposite to how the human brain does. Turbines produce electrical energy while polluting the environment beyond repair even as electric eels produce much higher-intensity electricity while cleaning the environment. Batteries store very little electricity while producing very toxic spent materials. Synthetic plastic materials look like natural plastic, yet their syntheses follow an exactly opposite path. Furthermore, synthetic plastics do not have a single positive impact on the environment, whereas natural plastic materials do not have a single negative impact. In medical science, every promise made at the onset of commercialisation proven to be opposite of what actually happened: witness Prozac, Vioxx, Viagra, etc., Nature, on the other hand, did not allow a single product to impact the long-term negatively. Even the deadliest venom (eg: cobra, poisoned arrow tree frog) has numerous beneficial effects in the long-term. This catalogue carries on in all directions: microwave cooking, fluorescent lighting, nuclear energy, cellular phones, refrigeration cycles to combustion cycles. In essence, nature continues to improve matters in its quality, as modern technologies continue to degrade the same into baser qualities.

Book SynopsisTens of thousands of chemicals are listed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for commercial use in the United States, with an average of 600 new chemicals listed each year. The EPA''s ability to effectively implement its mission of protecting public health and the environment depends on credible and timely assessments of the risks posed by toxic chemicals. In 1976, Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to provide the EPA with the authority to obtain more information on chemicals and to regulate those chemicals that the EPA determines pose unreasonable risks to human health or the environment. The TSCA authorises the EPA to review chemicals already in commerce and chemicals yet to enter commerce. In 2009, the EPA announced TSCA reform principles to inform ongoing efforts to manage toxic chemicals. This book assesses the increased efforts of the EPA to ensure the safety of toxic chemicals management.

Book SynopsisThis book examines the first of the Environmental Protection Agency''s (EPA''s) triennial reports on the current and potential future environmental impacts associated with the requirements of the Clean Air Act. It reviews environmental and resource conservation impacts, as well as opportunities to mitigate these impacts, at each stage of the biofuel supply chain: feedstock production, feedstock logistics, biofuel production, biofuel distribution, and biofuel use. The information included here is considered foundational for future efforts to quantitatively compare the environmental impacts of alternative scenarios for meeting the goals of the RFS2 program, representing the best available information through July 2010 and reflecting the current understanding about biofuel production and use, including input from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Energy.

Book SynopsisThis book assesses the state of the science on the environmental impacts of mountaintop mines and valley fills (MTM-VF) on streams in the Central Appalachian Coalfields. These coalfields cover about 48,000 square kilometres (12 million acres) in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee, USA. This book focuses on the impacts of mountaintop removal coal mining, which, as its name suggests, involves removing all -- or some portion -- of the top of a mountain or ridge to expose and mine one or more coal seams. The excess overburden is disposed of in constructed fills in small valleys or hollows adjacent to the mining site. Conclusions are drawn, based on evidence from peer-reviewed literature, and from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency''s Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement released in 2005, and that MTM-VF lead directly to five principal alterations of stream ecosystems: (1) springs, and ephemeral, intermittent, and small perennial streams are permanently lost with the removal of the mountain and from burial under fill, (2) concentrations of major chemical ions are persistently elevated downstream, (3) degraded water quality reaches levels that are acutely lethal to standard laboratory test organisms, (4) selenium concentrations are elevated, reaching concentrations that have caused toxic effects in fish and birds and (5) macroinvertebrate and fish communities are consistently degraded.

Book SynopsisChildren living in circumstances of social and economic disadvantage are at high risk for experiencing health problems caused or exacerbated by environmental factors. They are not only vulnerable to adverse chemical and physical factors in their environment, but often become trapped in the cycle of environmental health disparities due to low parental health literacy, limited social capital, and a lack of access to comprehensive healthcare and appropriate educational services. They will only be able to escape that cycle when children''s environmental health becomes a priority and the resources, energy and creativity are amassed and allocated to address environmental health concerns. In this book, we look at issues concerned with the home environment, the school and the community. Investing in children''s environmental health will prove cost-beneficial in the long run.
