Peeters Publishers From Pots to People: A Ceramic Approach to the
Book SynopsisDuring the last forty odd years, archaeological surveys have demonstrated that much can be said about changing patterns of regional exchange and settlement hierarchies based on surface observations. Walking the Mediterranean landscape, the most common indication of ancient human activity survey archaeologists come across are scatters of pottery and other ceramics. Enormous numbers of sherds are counted, collected, recorded, and interpreted in order to understand the ancient cultural, social, economic, and ritual landscapes. Some discrete scatters of ancient artefacts are interpreted as sites where people have lived and/or worked based on an analysis of both cultural and environmental data. These artefact scatters are modern phenomena affected by complex post-depositional processes such as cultivation which obscure potentional behavioural patterning. Artefact-based survey with its treatment of artefacts behaving as sediments in the soil enhanced with a detailed pottery analysis centred on use has the potential to greatly increase our understanding of the ancient rural world. This book offers an attempt to create a methodology for hypothesizing about the general activities taking place at sites identified by survey based on ceramics. The use typology is put forward as a tool for studying artefactual differentiation, and the method consists of establishing empirically generalized pottery indices of different human activities based on artefactual differentiation at Late Roman sites in Cyprus.

Studies in His Life, Language and Thought is the result of a symposium on this Church Father held by the Centre for Patristic Research (CPO), which is an initiative of VU University Amsterdam and Tilburg University. The symposium was held on the occasion of the 1750th anniversary of his martyrdom, which took place on 14 September 258. Virtually all contributions are from Dutch scholars who are members of the CPO. They cover Cyprian's biography, hermeneutical and philological questions, theological issues such as baptism and the role of the laity in episcopal elections, and the reception of the Church Father's texts in ancient and modern times.

Book SynopsisAugustine's way of speaking about God has been frequently deplored. It has been dismissed as too confident regarding the content of its assertions and too narrowly confined. The reception of Augustine's work appears to indicate that there was not a little truth to this view. Augustine's affirmative statements on God's essence and activities constituted the 'initial capital' of Christian theology and spirituality.In contemporary religion, a tendency is in evidence to deny that too specific an image of God can really contain absolute truth. Fully formulated religious truths have to be placed in perspective, or must even be deconstructed, especially if the suspicion arises that they inhibit openness to authentic religious experiences of unity and harmony. Given such an outlook on religion, it seems understandable that those who take contemporary culture's renewed interest in religion seriously ignored Augustine's work as an authoritative source for 'post-christian' discourse about God.The presupposition of this book is that, throughout his life, Augustine maintained a balance between speaking about God and remaining silent about him to a much greater extent than has often been realized. On the one hand, as a priest and a bishop, he wished to prevent misunderstandings concerning the nature of God's essence and activity. On the other hand, as a young priest, he already showed his concern to drive home to the faithful the idea that God was a mystery.If Augustine positioned himself at the cutting edge of speaking and remaining silent, then his work is once more of importance for the future of the Christian faith, because it recognizes that the tension between affirmative and negative discourse about God has been characteristic of the Christian tradition from time immemorial.

Commonplace as a technical term refers to the loci communes collected in late medieval and early modern commonplace books. In the project, however, the notion of commonplace was broadened to include means of persuasion in all kinds of texts as well as the visual arts, theatre, music and other media. This broader notion embraces metaphors, proverbs, figures, and expressions that enjoyed both a history of use in a given society or language community and a wide currency in that society. The 'commonplaces' analysed by contributors to this volume constitute cultural objects which gained persuasive potential from the exploitation of material bearing the authority of the past, yet they are not commonplaces stricto sensu. The essays in the volume examine not only written texts but also theatre, music, processions, ballets, and royal entries. In particular, the notion of the commonplace is taken into the visual domain, indicating that in the seventeenth century the visual was central to those diverse practices which sought to shore up God-given power through the pre-existing authority of commonplace material. Book SynopsisThis volume contains the papers of the 'Groningen Workshop on Hellenistic Poetry 9: Gods and Religion in Hellenistic Poetry' (Groningen 2008). During the workshop a first draft of the papers was commented on by an international group of specialists in the field of Hellenistic poetry.Following developments in recent research, where the study of ancient religion is flourishing, the articles in this volume explore the ways in which Hellenistic poets deal with issues relating to gods and religion. Some themes have been selected for special treatment. Thus some articles focus on the way in which Hellenistic poets inscribe the old gods in their poetry and give them a new role and meaning: they discuss, for instance, the role of Aphrodite, who is prominent in Hellenistc epigram, or the role of Zeus, who is portrayed as a model and example for the Ptolemies and thus adds an extra dimension to the first hymn of Callimachus. Book SynopsisWithin women's history the symbolic importance of the vote to generations of feminists has meant the relative absence of historical investigation into the nature of power of women within political elites. However, from ancient times onwards, women have found themselves at the political apex, often as a consequence of their position within a kinship system. Recent interest in gender relations in and around parliament and party has shifted the focus back to women who belonged to the upper class. This volume seeks to address a number of revisions in the ongoing debate on the history of women's political power by highlighting the changing power resources available to women in the context of institutional change.Using a biographical approach the authors demonstrate how female political power since the early-modern era changed and was in certain respects diminished as consequence of the modern transition from monarchy to de-mocracy. In the final chapters, however, they document how women fought back and succeeded in gaining ' if not yet equality ' at least a firm foothold in politics. For historians and philosophers alike the question of whether the democratisation of European politics held an unequivocal advantage for women is as urgent as ever.

Book SynopsisHet Provinciaal Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen in Noord-Brabant werd in 1837 opgericht door Bosschenaren Hendrik Palier (1785-1853) en Cornelius Rudolphus Hermans (1805-1869). Het genootschap streefde ernaar een grote wetenschappelijke bewaarbibliotheek te stichten om zo een bijdrage te leveren aan de studie van de Brabantse geschiedenis. In 1864 telde deze boekerij 14.000 banden. Naast een collectie zeldzame Brabantse drukken, maken handschriften en archivalische bronnen een belangrijk onderdeel uit van deze bibliotheek. In 1986 werd de Bibliotheek van het Provinciaal Genootschap aangekocht door de provincie Noord-Brabant en in beheer gegeven aan de Bibliotheek van de Katholieke Universiteit Brabant te Tilburg. Het eerste deel geeft beschrijvingen van middeleeuwse handschriften en fragmenten (57 nummers) en behelst hoofdzakelijk meditatie-, gebeden- en getijdenboeken uit de Late Middeleeuwen. Onder de recentelijk ontdekte membra disiecta bevinden zich drie fragmenten van Jacob van Maerlant's Spiegel historiael en een fragment van Jan van Boendale's Der Leken Spieghel. In het tweede deel worden ale jongere handschriften en archivalische bronnen beschreven (561 nummers). Het betreft hier handschriften en archivalia op het terrein van onder meer genealogie, heraldiek, algemene en staatkundige geschiedenis, historische geografie, volkskunde, militaire geschiedenis, economische en sociale geschiedenis, rechtsgeschiedenis, kerkgeschiedenis, cultuurgeschiedenis.
