Book SynopsisHendrik Herp (um 1410-1470) gehort ohne Zweifel zu den markantesten Personlichkeiten im spatmittelalterlichen Frommigkeitsleben der Niederlande. In seinem Hauptwerk, dem volkssprachlichen "Spieghel der Volcomenheit" verfasste er eine mystische Stufenlehre fur ein laikales Publikum, die bis in die Neuzeit rezipiert wurde. Der vorliegende Band beschaftigt sich mit der Rezeption des "Spieghels" speziell im oberdeutschen Raum. Als Grundlage fur die Untersuchungen werden Herps Biographie und Gesamtwerk vorgestellt sowie die Grundzuge einer Text- und Uberlieferungsgeschichte des mittelniederlandischen "Spieghels" dargelegt. Im Hauptteil wird die Uberlieferungs- und Textgeschichte des oberdeutschen "Spiegels der Volkommenheit" erarbeitet. Dabei werden Benutzerkreise, Ursachen und Hintergrunde fur die oberdeutsche Uberlieferung, Schreiber und Provenienzen der Handschriften, Wege und Formen der Textverbreitung untersucht. Den Umgang mit spekulativ-mystischen Inhalten wird ebenso nachgegangen zie der Frage nach dem Einfluss des laikalen und monastischen Publikums auf die Textgeschichte. Abgeschlossen zird die Untersuchung mit einem Blick auf die Uberlieferung weiterer volkssprachlicher mittelniederlandischer Literatur in Oberdeutschland.

Book SynopsisThis book is the first comprehensive survey of the book trade and illumination in late medieval Tournai. It presents the results of a thorough documentary study . From both a historiographical and archival point of view, it aims to reassess the concept of the "Tournai school of illumination", which emerged in the 19th century and annexed such prestigious names as Simon Marmion, Jean Tavernier or Roger Van der Weyden. Comparing the Tournaisian records with those of neigbouring cities, the author situates the importance of the city as book market within the network of South Netherlandish production centres. At the same time, he examines in detail the craft of illumination in this region and comes up with a new status quaestionis. The study includes in appendix the complete body of Tournaisian documents mentioning manuscripts, as well as an extensive biographical list of book makers, from the 13th to the 16th century. Hence, it is also an essential reference book, which lays the foundations of a systematic study of book illumination in Tournai.

Book SynopsisKenner des Schrifttums der flamischen Mystikerin Hadewijch (13. Jahrhundert) haben seit langem beobachtet, dass die Frage, wie man 'gode ghenoegh sijn/doen' kann, eine zentrale Stelle in ihren Texten einnimmt. Das vorliegende Werk untersucht, wie Hadewijch dieses Problem erfasst und wie sie mit ihm umgeht. Nach einer Darstellung der bisherigen Ergebnisse der Hadewijch-Forschung wird die Bedeutung des Wortes 'ghenoech' und der ihm verwandten Termini 'ghenoeghen, onghenoeghent, ghenoechte/ghenuechte' und 'ghenoechle(e)c' ermittelt. Anschliessend wird eine systematisch-theologische Interpretation der Aussagen Hadewijchs uber das "genug tun" versucht. Das im Wort 'ghenoech' artikulierte Problem ist die Tatsache, dass der Mensch die Aufgabe, Gott die ihm gebuhrende Liebe entgegenzubringen, nicht restlos einzulosen vermag. Die Mysikerin leidet unter diesem Unvermogen, erfasst es aber schliesslich als die von Gott gesetzte Bedingung einer sich standig vertiefenden Selbstubereignung an Gott und so als Quelle der Freude. Das ist eine wertvolle Einsicht fur alle, die das Gebot Christi, Gott aus ganzer Kraft zu lieben, versthen und ernst nehmen mochten. Raymond Jahae, geboren 1968 in Heerlen (Niederlande), ist Priester und gehort der Kongregation der Oblaten der Makellosen Jungfrau Maria an. Das vorliegende Werk ist eine leicht uberarbeitete Fassung der Dissertation, mit der er 1999 im Fachbereich Katholische Theologie der Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz zum Dr. theol. promovierte. Momentan lebt P. Jahae in Rom, wo er sich im Bereich der Philosophie weiterbildet.

Book SynopsisDit boek vormt de neerslag van een onderzoek naar een bijna geheel verdwenen type codices met berijmde literatuur in het Middelnederlands. Het gaat over perkamenten handschriften van klein formaat, waarin de verzen in een kolom onder elkaar geschreven zijn. Hun aantal bedraagt slechts 40 en veruit de meeste zijn slechts fragmentarisch overgeleverd. Ze worden op basis van de omvang en bindwijze in vier groepen verdeeld. Zeker bij de heel dunne boekjes, van een of enkele katernen, zal de keuze voor een eenkoloms-opmaak niet verbazen. Dat neemt volgens de auteur echter niet weg dat de handschriften standaard boektypen gevormd hebben voor de meeste van de teksten die daarin zijn overgeleverd.Vanuit deze invalshoek is de samenhang onderzocht tussen de materiele kenmerken en de inhoud van de perkamenten boekjes, en is een vergelijkend onderzoek gedaan naar de Duitse en Franstalige traditie. Dat laatste bracht onder andere het unieke karakter van het Nederlands materiaal aan het licht, vooral waar het de dunne boekjes betreft, met teksten als "Die Dietsce Catoen", "Dat boec van den houte" en "Karel ende Elegast", die een even opmerkelijke voortzetting in druk gekend hebben. Mogelijk moet hier ook een verband gelegd worden met de onderwijspraktijk, zoals het fenomeen kleine boekjes in zijn algemeenheid verklaard zou kunnen worden uit de toegenomen geletterdheid van de stedelijke bevolking in de Lage Landen. Opmerkelijk is in dit licht ook de opvoedkundige waarde die aan een populair rijmwerk als "Van den levene ons heren" wordt toegekend, dat bij uitstek door het kleine type handschrift vertegenwoordigd wordt.In het algemeen kan gesteld worden dat de hier bestudeerde soorten boekjes een brede verspreiding gekend moeten hebben. Dat maakt deze studie tot een intrigerende poging het gebruik van zulke handschriften in verband te brengen met onderwijs en opvoeding in de late Middeleeuwen.

Book SynopsisNous avons choisi d'aborder Catulle par ce qu'il nous laisse: un desordre et un secret.Ce desordre est une source d'imaginaire: en effet, la memoire du lecteur s'ingenie a en reconstituer les themes par le biais des personnages notamment.La "dissemination poetique" creee paradoxalement par le regroupement metrique engendre, avec ce double mouvement de liaison et de separation qui caracterise Catulle, une dynamique temporelle troublante. L'espace poetique fragmente (volontairement ou non) appelle un temps unifie, les hiatus appellent les ressemblances. Dans le monde catullien, chaque etoile fait signe et cherche sa constellation.Il nous est ainsi apparu d'emblee que le travail de reprise, de retour, de ressassement meme de l'ecriture allait de pair avec une poetique de l'inexprime. Qu'il s'agisse de passions lyriques ou allegoriques, l'auteur decline sa culture affective tout en cherchant des structures ideales et des styles multiples soumis aux exigences des genres. L'ellipse et la digression figurent assez bien l'insatisfaction de l'artiste face au langage explicite et au trace rectiligne; il cultive l'implicite et le detour, il detourne les signes au profit des surprises qu'ils enferment. Meme pour toujours redire, il redit autrement. C'est le chatoiement du langage versicolore ou ses brusques contrastes qui l'interessent surtout.D'ou l'importance des voix differentes, des figures qui escortent chaque poeme afin qu'impressions diffuses et violentes deviennent expressions stylistiques. La mimetique catullienne serre les emotions au plus pres, par le dialogue notamment, mais aussi elle les place a distance grace au tissage des images dont l'"ecphrasis" et l'allegorie sont les lieux majeurs.Ainsi la rhetorique evolutive de Catulle suit le processus des recherches stylistiques les plus personnelles: notre seconde partie tente de visiter l'atelier du poete, en considerant les aspects rhetoriques et stylistiques de son oeuvre. Parole romaine et accents italiques croisent une preciosite grecque valorisante. Catulle use d'une oralite ludique et festive, il la dote de capacites inventives nouvelles; sa parole est ouverte aussi bien aux eclats du forum qu'a la verve de l'insulte, il capte la vie des mots quotidiens et stylise les effets: il retranscrit dans les registres choisis, en fonction d'une situation, d'un contexte enonciatif fictif, les petites et grandes dramaturgies du ressenti. Le poete explore les modes d'expression pour en souligner le caractere emotionnel. Il ne les choisit pas sans leur insuffler la force d'une persuasion sensible.Catulle s'avise des charmes trompeurs et veridiques, pourtant, de la parole: le locuteur se revele souvent grace a ce paradoxe, avec ses manques, ses exces, hyperbole et litote reunies. Mais l'arbitre des elegances passionnelles ne serait-il pas le "carmen", ce chant fluide de la chanson eolienne qui peu a peu se ritualise dans le distique? Catulle tourne l'hexametre vers le pentametre, il cadre une pensee (concettisme avant l'heure?) et lui imprime un mouvement de seduction: le poete sans doute cherche a rendre desirable sa parole, il en fait un symbole sensible. Il active, pour ce faire, les ressources lexicales et rythmiques, visant une facture achevee du poeme. Le poeme 64, souvent analyse, figure un art inquiet qui tend a se stabiliser.Mais toujours la recherche poetique des expressions du moi se fait en dialogue double: en amont, avec les poetes grecs - Sappho, Callimaque notamment - il rassemble la violence et la grace, son erotisme devient passion. En aval, avec les poetes de l'elegie - Properce, Tibulle, Ovide - il trace la route ou s'aventurent les paradoxes du desir et les illusions du coeur, mais aussi la beaute des images. Il figure jusque chez Horace, Seneque et Martial ce mouvement intermediaire d'absorption de l'hellenisme "baroque" et sa reaction classique: Catulle evolue vers une poetique de la profondeur, entre l'ombre et la lumiere des figures.

Although they are rarely treated as a cultural phenomenon, conversions can obviously be examined for the norms, values and presuppositions of the cultures in which they take place. Thus conversion can help us to shed light on a particular culture. At the same time, the term evokes a dramatic appeal that suggests a kind of suddenness, although in most cases conversion implies a more gradual process of establishing and defining a new - religious - identity.From 21-24 May, 2003, the University of Groningen hosted an international conference on 'Cultures of Conversion'. The contributions have been edited in two volumes, which pay special attention to the modes of language and idiom in conversion literature, the meaning and sense of religious-ideological discourse, the variety of rhetorical tropes, and the effects of the conversion narrative with allusions to religious or political conventions and idealizations.The present volume offers in-depth studies of conversion that are mainly taken from the history of India, Islam and Judaism, ranging from the Byzantine period to the new Muslimas of the West. The other volume, "Paradigms, Poetics and Politics of Conversion", in addition to stimulating case studies, contains theoretical contributions on the theory of conversion, with special attention to the rational choice theory and to the history of research into conversion.

Book SynopsisThe present volume contains twelve new essays on didactic verse, with a broad time-sweep ranging from the most ancient literature (Sumeria) through to the early-modern age (seventeenth-century England). Considered collectively, the contents illustrate the transmission of this important literary kind from Ancient to Modern times, and from east to west, from south to north. The Romantic age led to the lyric being seen as the dominant poetical mode, and today it has become almost axiomatic to view the chief function of poetry as the articulation of the thoughts and emotions of the individual; a concomitant assumption is that the essential quality of poetry is the aesthetic. However, in other cultures, and in earlier times, things were very different, and the didactic was long accorded a secure place as one of several prominent literary modes. While it is difficult to give a precise definition of the didactic, it may be said to be characteristically concerned with knowledge and wisdom, where the latter term inclines toward moral and religious instruction, and the former toward information both practical and encyclopaedic. The present contributions deal with the functioning of didactic verse in such widely diverse areas as: education in school; mnemotechnics; rhetoric, style and composition; farming; grammar; the natural world; cultural identity; liturgy and worship; aetiology; philosophy; politics; intertextuality; man as microcosm; the training of the soul; gender awareness. Truly, the classroom presided over by Calliope, the chief of muses, is no arid intellectual forcing-house but rather a place where the resources of rhetoric, learning and imagination are felicitously combined in the training of the individual mind and the betterment of society in general.

Book SynopsisCompose en guise de passe-temps durant une grave maladie qui frappa Lipse vers la mi-mars 1603, "De Vesta et Vestalibus" conclut pour ainsi dire la "Fax Historica", une serie sur la culture antique, entamee longtemps auparavant, mais n'ayant pas evolue comme l'auteur s'etait propose. Dans ce bref traite Lipse expose les principaux aspects du culte de Vesta, tels l'origine de la deesse, son temple, la "prise" des vestales, leur formation et leurs taches, leurs recompenses et peines, leur parure, le Palladium, la fin du culte et les cultes du feu dans d'autres cultures. La methode de redaction lipsienne consiste a rassembler des citations pertinentes de la litterature greco-latine et a les relier ensuite entre elles par des eclaircissements personnels. A ce materiel litteraire sont ajoutees des la seconde edition de 1609 des sources archeologiques, epigraphiques et numismatiques, reproduites egalement dans la presente edition. Lipse se vanta dans l'"Ad Lectorem" d'etre le premier a avoir traite le sujet de maniere exhaustive et systematique.

Book Synopsis"Desultoria scientia" is the fifth volume of "Caeculus" and contains the proceedings of the fifth Fransum Colloquium, held on 18 May 2002. The Fransum Colloquia are meant to assist PhD-candidates in Mediterranean Archaeology and Greek and Roman Studies at the University of Groningen in the final phase of their doctoral research. The fifth colloquium was organised around the work of Wytse Keulen, who in January 2003 successfully defended his thesis "Apuleius Madaurensis: Metamorphoses Book I, 1-20. Introduction, Text, Commentary". The topic chosen by Wytse Keulen was "Genre in Apuleius' Metamorphoses and Related Texts".Like other ancient 'novels', the "Metamorphoses" of Apuleius has no clear-cut generic identity itself, but continually evokes a great number of genres from Greek and Latin literature, from the 'high' genres of tragedy and epic to 'lower' genres such as comedy and mime. Some of the genres it takes up, most notably Roman satire, were themselves already characterised by a mixing of the 'high' and 'low', so that the resulting texture is sometimes hard to disentangle; at the same time, the shifts and shocks of generic reference significantly contribute, as Apuleius programmatically announces in the prologue, to the reader's delight. In this collection, generic play in the "Metamorphoses" is approached from a number of diverse angles: some articles analyse individual passages, others consider specific genres, while there are also discussions of related texts such as Apuleius' oratorical works and the hybrid fictions of Lucian. No claim is made for a complete or systematic coverage of the subject; in that sense, the collection itself participates in the "desultoria scientia" that it studies.

Book SynopsisThe topic of the workshop entitled 'Role and status of journeyman in artists' and craftmen's workshops in the Low Countries c. 1450 - c. 1650', held in Groningen, 23-24 May 2003, grew out of archival and material-technical research on workshop practices. As a result of this research it gradually became clear that more knowledge about the social and economic mechanisms of art production was required in order to study the painters' workshop. Such research frequently moves in two or more directions, and in this case the workshop proceeded on the basis of two questions: how can socially and economically oriented historical research help art historians, and what can art historical, and material and technical research add to corporate history of the painter's guild? Geographically, the case studies in this volume deal with southern Netherlandish towns, in particular Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen, Ghent and Bruges. One essay focuses on the Dutch Republic. Chronologically, the contributions treat the late Middle Ages and early Modern Period (c. 1450 and c. 1650). From an artistic point of view, this era can be characterized as the long 'Golden Age' of Flemish painting. The epoch witnessed the apogee of the art of the Flemish Primitives and the rise of the successful genre of Antwerp Mannerism. It also witnessed the start of the influence of the Italian Renaissance on Flemish art, the rise of Antwerp over the course of the sixteenth century as the vanguard of new genres which were exported all over the world, and the international triumph of the Flemish Baroque after 1610.

In this debate, the tension between two conceptions of art - conceived as autotelic, or as serving social, ethical, ideological or commercial ends - plays a key role. For literature, two periods are particularly interesting in this respect: the period around 1900, and the turn of the millennium. The former is considered to witness the consecration of the autonomy of the arts with respect to morality or social utility, and of its prestige as 'high art', against the background of compelling countermovements, such as the Arts and crafts movements or socialist art. The second period, on the other hand, has been analysed as displaying, in post-modern Western cultures, an opposite tendency towards deautonomization. Book SynopsisThis analytical bibliography, compiled with the support of the University of Antwerp, represents a first, important step toward broader studies concerning the nature, function, and significance of propagandistic materials that have been printed and distributed since the seventeenth century in connection with pilgrimage sites in the Southern Netherlands. Two and a half centuries (from 1600 to 1850) of publications are documented. This is an intriguing period for such a study because Catholic clergy made great use of printed propaganda materials for their (often successful) attempts to revitalize pilgrimages as part of the Counter-Reformation. Consequently, there was a new surge of such publications in the Southern Netherlands as of 1600 that prevailed until the early nineteenth century, when changing ecclesiastical views of how one should experience the Catholic faith led many local clergy to publish new types of pilgrimage books. As tens of thousands of pilgrimage texts were printed in this period, only one essential sub-group of these publications could be featured here, namely those related to Marian pilgrimage sites in the current provinces of Antwerp, Vlaams-Brabant, and the county of Brussels. The resulting bibliography reflects the holdings of numerous collections and provides, for each publication whenever possible, a full transcription of the title page, the collation of the book, and notes on whether or not illustrations, dedicatory texts, and personal notations by previous owners are present. This work consequently provides a useful base of knowledge for those interested in a wide variety of topics pertaining both to the production of devotional literature and the extensive popular hold these pilgrimage sites had on people in and beyond the Southern Netherlands.
