    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book draws on the lived experience of sounds capacity to move and shake us in direct, subtle and profound ways through speech, location sound, and music in documentary film. The associative, connotative and sheer emotive power of sound has the capacity to move and shake us in a myriad of direct, subtle and often profound ways. The implications of this for its role as speech, location sound, and music in documentary film are far-reaching. The writers in this book draw on the lived experience of sounds resounding capacity as primary motivation for exploring these implications, united by the overarching theme of how listening is connected with acts of making sense both on its own terms and in conjunction with viewing. The resulting thirteen essays of Soundings: Documentary Film and the Listening Experience cover films made from WWII to the present day in locations across Europe and the Americas, and in styles ranging from political propaganda, industrial promotion and educative exposition, to more aesthetically-driven films taking their bearings from avant-garde art. The authors draw on their experience in scholarly research, practice-as-research, and in the aesthetic and technical practice of documentary filmmaking. This mix of perspectives aims to widen and deepen the outlook of the recent and growing academic interest in the topic of documentary film sound.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Stories from a stay at the Arena Hotel; Weave Me a Rainbow; ˈThe march, the march of colour and patternˈ: Music and cinematography at the service of the creative promotion of the 1960s Scottish woollen industry; Sonicules: Designing drugs with sound: approaches to 69 sound design for flm, audiovisual performance and interactive sonifcation; Auralising Action Space: channelling a sense of play in 85 documentary sound design; ˈThe flm looks like how Ornette soundsˈ: Shirley Clarkeˈs music documentary Ornette: Made in America Rosa Nogués; Progress Music; Creative use of voice in non-fction narrative flm: an examination of the work of Peter Mettler; Documentary flm as a backdrop for active thinking; Centrepiece: The unwanted sound of everything we think we want; The ˈAppassionataˈ Sonata in A Diary for Timothy; A ˈSymphony of Britain at Warˈ or the ˈRhythm of Workaday Britainˈ?: When the Pie Was Opened (1941) and the musicalisation of warfare; Building a sonic image of a nation: Finnish documentary and propaganda flms in the early decades of sound flm; Raúl Ruizˈs Now Weˈre Gonna Call You Brother and the 255 problem of the peopleˈs sonic representation; Afterword.

    Lafayette Anticipations Coming Soon

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThinking, dreaming, foreseeing or fearing the future has shaped our presence in the world since its very beginnings. In our current context, one of profound metamorphosis and uncertainty, the exhibition and the book Coming Soon revisit this relationship we have with the unknown. Between predictions, oracles, systems of anticipation and capitulations, this book features essays by Sandrine Alexandre, K Allado-Mcdowell, Ama Josephine Budge Johnstone, Kara Keeling, Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, Martine Syms and Olivier Zeitoun. It also includes notes on the works exhibited and visuals. The future is a time-space in constant evolution, which all don't get to inhabit under the same terms and conditions. Engaging us to think urgently about the future through different understandings of togetherness, Coming Soon focuses on possible paths of writing, imagining, creating and embodying collective outcomes.

  • FiftyNine Positions

    RVB Books FiftyNine Positions

Book Synopsis59 Positions is a 20-minute video, filmed in 1992 using a stationary camera in an empty, unadorned room with a concrete floor, consisting of fragments of actions each lasting just a few seconds, in which we glimpse the artist Erwin Wurm and his friends bundled up in sweaters, pants and shirts, seemingly oblivious to the usual purposes of these articles of clothing. Their bodies are contorted into ridiculous poses, under the influence of a strange choreography made up of motionless objects that tremble almost imperceptibly. Wurm thus aims to explore whether a physical action can become a sculpture and if so, at what point the transition takes place. By making use of looped sequences without movement, his aim was to find out if and when this transformation might happen. Wurm was so impressed by the visual force and immediacy of these curious anthropomorphic forms that he decided to create a series of colour photographs based on this video, thus reconnecting with this medium in which he had often worked in the 1980s. After Self-Portrait as 47 Pickles, 59 Positions is the second title in the series of artist's books by Erwin Wurm published by RVB Books.

    Palais de Tokyo P L S Issue 37

Book SynopsisIssue 37 of Palais de Tokyo magazine addresses the relationships between mental health, contemporary creation, and art and culture venues, in particular through the prism of institutional psychotherapy, a set of practices aimed at disalienating institutionsinitially psychiatric ones. P L S echoes the awareness of mental health at the Palais de Tokyo which works on various levels, starting with the art centre's expertise when it comes to cultural mediation, which has allowed bonds to be forged with actors in the social, psychiatric and medical fields, as well as with the people concerned. This has also led to the opening of the hamo, a new space for hosting, practising, researching and for experiences which are especially inspired by the notions of well-being and care. (Re)thinking cultural institutions from the perspective of vulnerability means supporting and valuing differences, and inventing new ways of caring and living together. It is also about politicising and poeticising t

Gleaned from the internet, nonchalantly retouched in Photoshop, these images show stupid and demonic creatures. But it is ultimately a satirical portrait of our society that the artist mischievously portrays in this book, produced for two exhibitions at the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau and the Ferme des Tilleuls in Renens and designed by the graphic design office NORM in Zurich. Augustin Rebetez is a Swiss artist who builds a powerful and sprawling universe that can be discovered in exhibitions, shows or in books. Book SynopsisIn his work Very charming animals - HUMANS, the swiss artist Augustin Rebetez explores artificial intelligence and manipulates algorithmically-generated portraits, creating fictitious human beings whom he then subjects to bloody artistic surgery with Photoshop. Which is more monstrous, the artificial intelligence or the artist''s work? Halfway between reality and fiction, digital and DIY, creepy and darkly humorous, Bruce Gilden and Cindy Sherman, these portraits are funny, powerful and hard-hitting. Showcased in an elegant book with radical graphics by swiss agency NORM that reinforce the darkness, brutality and strength of this dark and repulsive artistic work.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access edited volume provides theoretical, practical, and historical perspectives on art and education in a post-digital, post-internet era. Recently, these terms have been attached to artworks, artists, exhibitions, and educational practices that deal with the relationships between online and offline, digital and physical, and material and immaterial. By taking the current socio-technological conditions of the post-digital and the post-internet seriously, contributors challenge fixed narratives and field-specific ownership of these terms, as well as explore their potential and possible shortcomings when discussing art and education. Chapters also recognize historical forebears of digital art and education while critically assessing art, media, and other realms of engagement. This book encourages readers to explore what kind of educational futures might a post-digital, post-internet era engender.Trade Review“Post-digital, Post-Internet Art and Education: the Future Is All-Over … is highly recommended to those interested in recognizing their postdigital status and seeking new opportunities for art education. … an outstanding source of ideas that push us out of our comfort zones and challenge us to think differently about digital art education. Book SynopsisParis-based artist Caroline Ventura explores gestures, forms, and colors as well as their combinations and concepts in various media such as painting, drawing, mural art, and photography. The artist bookMore Beautiful Than They Arepresents drawings Ventura has created almost daily since 2020. In her drawings, Ventura combines a treasure of memories, encounters, forms, and symbols from her interior world with elements of pop and everyday culture. The artist inquisitively searches for the moment in which tension arises and magic happens. She juxtaposes graphic gestures, overlays forms and materials, allowing colors to clash and setting in connection what does not necessarily belong together. Page by page, Caroline Ventura searches for visual analogies from a subjective perspective to structure the ambivalences that characterize our relationships. The book that is designed by Dorothee Dähler features texts by Laura Breitschmid and Claire Hoffmann and a photographic essay by Dominik Hodel.

Book SynopsisBorn in Quimper (Brittany) in 1971, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art. In 1996, his Vase Soliflore took its place in the Centre Pompidou's permanent collection. Giulio Cappellini noticed his work at the Paris Salon du Meuble in 1997, giving him the opportunity to create his first pieces of industrial design, and he was awarded the Grand Prix du Design by the City of Paris. Shortly after, he was joined by his brother Erwan and they began ongoing partnerships with international design brands around the world which are still going today. Ronan Bouroullec set up his Paris-based design studio with his younger brother, Erwan, in '99. For over two decades, the internationally acclaimed duo have co-created iconic designs for the likes of Vitra, Hay, Flos, Cassina, Ligne Roset, Magis, Mutina Established & Sons and Kvadrat. Their designs are held in some of the world's most coveted permanent collections, exhibitions have been devoted to their work, and monographs have been published, cataloguing some of their outstanding creations. Alongside their joint recognition, Ronan's drawings have been featured in many solo exhibitions including Giorgio Mastinu Fine Art (Venice, 2018), Galerie kreo, (Paris, 2019), Licht Gallery (Tokyo, 2021) and Casa Mutina (Milan, 2021-2022) - as well as group exhibitions such as Objects of Desire - Surrealism and Design 1924-Today', (Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany, 2019; CaixaForum Barcelona, Spain, 2020; CaixaForum Madrid, Spain, 2020-2021) and Un printemps incertain, invitation à 40 créateurs', (Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, 2021). His drawings can be found in a number of major private and international collections, notably the Art Institute of Chicago. Ronan Bouroullec is represented by Galerie kreo, in Paris and London. Whilst the Bouroullecs' collaborative designs involve a rigorous and complex process of research and testing, Ronan's personal work offer no interferences, no plans. Drawing which has been a regular activity since early childhood occupies an important place in his daily life. Today, his drawings are instinctive and exude freedom.

In an apartment, converted into a laboratory, hum a whole bunch of complicated machines linked together by a tangle of multicolored electrical wires. In the middle of all this mess, wrapped in transparent plastic sheets, a new experience will take place in a few moments. Indeed, for the first time in history, a team of researchers will be able to precisely decode the creative process of an artist. Plunged into an artificial coma, the Genevan painter Josse Bailly wears a sort of motorcycle helmet, from which colorful cables spring. At the end of the test, Bailly's abundant pictorial practice will no longer have any secrets for the scientists present. The mechanism of his artistic frenzy, this true fury to paint, will be translated in an intelligible and logical manner. Suddenly, a crackling sound is heard. Eyes rolling back, Bailly suddenly sits up square on the massage table transforme

Book SynopsisThe Nahua concept of ixiptla derives from the particle xip, meaning skin, coverage or shell. A natural outer layer of tissue that covers the body of a person or animal, the skin can be separated from the body to produce garments, containers for holding liquids or parchment as a writing surface.Originally a Nahua word, ixiptla has been understood as image, delegate, character, and representative. Ixiptla could be a container, but also could be the actualization of power infused into an object or person. In Nahua culture, it took the form of a statue, a vision, or a victim who turned into a god destined to be sacrificed. Without having to visually appear the same, multiple ixiptlas of the same god could exist simultaneously. The distinction between essence and material, and between original and copy vanishes. This edition of Ixiptla is focused on the trajectory of objects collected and produced by archeologists plaster molds, facsimiles, drawings, photographs, and scale models , in an attempt to capture and replicate material evidences left by time; these objects emerge from a specific moment in time, producing a doppelgänger of the original milieu, which then takes its own course. For this first issue, a group of anthropologists, archaeologists, artists, and writers have been invited to reflect on the role of the model, the copy, and reproduction in their areas of research and practice.Ixiptla is a new biannual journal about trajectories of Anthropology, it has been initiated by the artist Mariana Castillo Deball. The first issue is published on the occasion of Expedite Expression, 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin, 2014.

Book SynopsisWhat Is the Use of Fire if It Does Not Warm? Sophio Medoidze's (b. Tbilisi, then USSR, 1978; lives and works in London) practice encompasses film, photography, writing, and sculpture and explores the poetic potential of uncertainty. Her work has been shown at Tate Modern, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles, the Serpentine Gallery, the Close Up Film Centre, Kunstmuseum Luzern, and the Whitechapel Gallery, amongst others. For a time she worked anonymously as part of the Clara Emigrand collective, disseminating her work outside the gallery context. Medoidze explores the relationship between rural and urban, languages and translations, as well as gender politics and dynamics. Her works often emerge from writing and unfold as installations incorporating moving image, sculpture, and text. The publication Bastard Sun brings together a collection of photographs taken after the civil unrest in Georgia in the 1990s with short texts written over the subsequent visits to Georgia, together with a collection of twelve short stories. Medoidze's writing provides nuanced and at times humorous reflections on personal and political change. Bastard Sun is co-published with KONA BOOKS, a Tbilisi-based publishing house that focuses on contemporary visual and interdisciplinary projects.
