Book SynopsisI asked Andriu Deplazes if he had always wished to be a painter. No, he said. For a time, he had trained to be a classical musician, but turned away from music because there was something repellent about the need to demonstrate virtuosity. To be a virtuoso, as the moral world depicted in these paintings clearly shows, is not the same as having virtue. And yet, at the same time, there are still traces of virtuosity in Deplazes' practice: in the idealised landscapes that he renders, and in the easy depiction of animal life. It is only humans that he will not denigrate with such perfection. Their overpainted faces do not allow them to be captured as things, but rather present them as subjects. They elude categorisation because they are responding, in real time, to what they see in us. Adam JasperThe work of Andriu Deplazes has been exhibited throughout Europe since 2015. On the occasion of his 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution is dedicated to his multifaceted work and artistic development. Initially working in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting of the late 19th century, Symbolism and Cubism subsequently took on great significance for him. It was not until the early 1920s that the artist focused on a wholly non-representational pictorial vocabulary, limited to the rectangular arrangement of black lines with surfaces in white and the primary colors blue, red and yellow. Book SynopsisConstructivist Rafael Pérez (b. 1938 Montalbán, Estado Carabobo, Venezuela; d. 2001 Zurich, Switzerland), produced primarily paintings and drawings, plus a few sculptures. Since the mid-1960s he worked with intense and uncompromising colours in a strictly geometric style. Neither figurative content nor a title he labelled his paintings unsentimentally according to colours distracted from the work itself. The approximately ten sketchbooks, almost without exception dedicated to his wife Ursula, are a special feature of his creations. These books, created as personal gifts, show aspects of his work reserved for his closest circles, above all his family. Though the sketchbooks also comprise drawings that served as studies for paintings, those that reveal his fascination with the universe and its dimensions in everyday life deserve special attention. The sketchbook presented in this publication was created in Pérez's studio in December 1992 in Dielsdorf, Zurich, as a Christmas present for his wife Ursula. Only minor alterations to the pagination, size and dedication have been made.

Book Synopsis019 was never going to remain the only place we worked in. From the start, it's been a laboratory that swings us into unknown directions, constantly sharpening our sense of improvisation and reinvention on the spot. For three years, from 2013 onwards, we made that old welding factory at Dok Noord in Ghent the focal point of our activities. People even started to identify the entirety of our collective, Smoke & Dust, with what was basically only the name of its nineteenth project. We became 019. The whole project turned us upside down. But in doing so, we became aware as well. We understood that the act of occupying and taking possession of the site was not the goal of our work at all. From the inside out, starting with a wooden construction in its interior and up to the billboard at an outside wall and a series of flagpoles on the roof, we gradually developed the place into an assembly of undergrounds for public and artistic encounter, an emerging space for collaboration that was grounded on the premise that all media at our disposal were common grounds to be rediscovered. That's when the work began. That's when things began to move, for real. That's when we realizedartists, architects, designers and the likewe had all turned into scenographers, regardless of our discipline: co-authors of a scene that was constructed out of margins and constraints, participants in a game of give and take that we endlessly play around a display we like to recycle. In the end, that's how 019, our handling of its space through appropriation and dispossession, became the site of a moving practice, a collaborative way of working ready to be moved, reproduced and reinvented elsewhere.

Created from 20112016, the collages are colorful, cheeky, sometimes cute, and mostly mischievous. The artist also painted detailed renditions of some of them in oils.The use of found images endows these Paperdolls with a twofold value. They incarnate quotidian objects of our day and age, while concomitantly prying open our everyday perceptions and reminding us of sensations and moments in our own consumer lives. Paper dolls date back to ancient Chinese funeral rites and katashiro figures in Japanese healing rituals. In Europe, paper cutouts of figures for fashion-following bourgeoises evolved into a popular and inexpensive pastime for children. In the US, paper dolls had their heyday during the Great Depression.Now they have become an important and expressive medium for contemporary artists to comment on current trends and day-to-day life. And Schifferle's Paperdolls are inextricably bound up with present-day life through the use of collage, which was resurrected in the 20th century to become a signature technique of modern art. His drawings are spontaneous sketches of his observations of everyday life, with the individual and the landscape as recurring themes.Marx's idealised panorama for the Aula in the Ferdinandeum is a Tyrolean theme park, a place of urban styling. His pictorial worlds are psycho-geographic landscapes recruited from archaic and classical motifs of Tyrolean history. His panoramas reference historical and contemporary meanings; we witness the execution of Andreas Hofer in Mantua and are guests of Emperor Maximilian and his entourage. The panoramas present images such as one would expect of an idealised world. All the indicators of the good life are present: laughing landscapes, exulting animals, the naked Nordkette, etc. In contrast to classical portraits, his protagonists are not glorified; they are not there to impress. The fiscal cliff illustrates an abrupt and uncontrolled economic collapse, and the imagery of state leaders falling down cliffs is one of satire drawings' best known archetypes. On 52 pages, the essence of the two least colorful colors is traced black and white. On the right-hand sides of each page are paper cuts from the years 1995 1998. They are juxtaposed with pictorial responses from 2019, which were created in the original size of the publication especially for this artist's book. Hand-signed artist edition, 200 copies.
