  • Mondrian Evolution

    Hatje Cantz Mondrian Evolution

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisPiet Mondrian had a decisive influence on the development of painting from figuration to abstraction. On the occasion of his 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution is dedicated to his multifaceted work and artistic development. Initially working in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting of the late 19th century, Symbolism and Cubism subsequently took on great significance for him. It was not until the early 1920s that the artist focused on a wholly non-representational pictorial vocabulary, limited to the rectangular arrangement of black lines with surfaces in white and the primary colors blue, red and yellow. In separate chapters, this path is traced through motifs such as windmills, dunes, and the sea, farms reflected in the water, and plants in various forms of abstraction.

Book SynopsisConstructivist Rafael Pérez (b. 1938 Montalbán, Estado Carabobo, Venezuela; d. 2001 Zurich, Switzerland), produced primarily paintings and drawings, plus a few sculptures. Since the mid-1960s he worked with intense and uncompromising colours in a strictly geometric style. Neither figurative content nor a title he labelled his paintings unsentimentally according to colours distracted from the work itself. The approximately ten sketchbooks, almost without exception dedicated to his wife Ursula, are a special feature of his creations. These books, created as personal gifts, show aspects of his work reserved for his closest circles, above all his family. Though the sketchbooks also comprise drawings that served as studies for paintings, those that reveal his fascination with the universe and its dimensions in everyday life deserve special attention. The sketchbook presented in this publication was created in Pérez's studio in December 1992 in Dielsdorf, Zurich, as a Christmas present for his wife Ursula. Only minor alterations to the pagination, size and dedication have been made.

  • Princeton University Press Curves for the Mathematically Curious

Book SynopsisTrade Review"This is not your father’s – or grandfather’s – standard collection of conic sections."---Jim Stein, New Books Network"Undoubtedly [this book], written in the same entertaining unmistakable style of the author and containing a lot of information - mathematical, historical and general - will attract, as the previous ones, a large audience."---S. Cobzas, Studia Mathematica"What a beautiful book!"---Jonathan Shock, Mathemafrica.org"A wonderful addition to libraries where the mathematically curious find their reading." * Choice *"Havil’s narrative for each curve is a cornucopia of fun facts and rigorous explanation."---Andrew J. Simoson, Mathematical Intelligencer"Overall, the book was a delight to read. The writing is witty and entertaining, the history is at times peculiar and surprising, and the mathematics is rich and engaging. It would make a fine addition to a classroom bookcase or home coffee table, but while there are plenty of elegant diagrams and intriguing stories to give every curious reader the chance to glimpse mathematical beauty, only those with the ability to dig beneath the surface will understand just how much beauty this book has to offer."---Samuel Hewitt, Mathematical Gazette

  • Memory Passages

    Temple University Press,U.S. Memory Passages

Book SynopsisFor decades, artists and architects have struggled to relate to the Holocaust in visual form, resulting in memorials that feature a diversity of aesthetic strategies. In Memory Passages, Natasha Goldman analyzes both previously-overlooked and internationally-recognized Holocaust memorials in the United States and Germany from the postwar period to the present, drawing on many historical documents for the first time. From the perspectives of visual culture and art history, the book examines changing attitudes toward the Holocaust and the artistic choices that respond to it. The book introduces lesser-known sculptures, such as Nathan Rapoport's Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs in Philadelphia, as well as internationally-acclaimed works, such as Peter Eisenman's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. Other artists examined include Will Lammert, Richard Serra, Joel Shapiro, Gerson Fehrenbach, Margit Kahl, and Andy Goldsworthy.Archival documents and interviews with cTrade Review"[Goldman] balances the analysis of the visual form and stylistic evolution of these [Holocaust] memorials from figurative to conceptualist, with a particularly interesting in-depth analysis of the societal and political context in which they were created.... [E]xcellently researched, full of rich historic detail.... [T]his book provides great insight into the history of Holocaust memorials, as well as and perhaps most relevantly for social scientists, the relationship between collective and embodied memory and the visual form."—Visual Studies "Memory Passages is a fascinating study of Holocaust memorial art in Germany (East, West, and united Germany) and the United States. Its fascination lies, first, in the sheer range of memorials covered.... Second, Goldman’s study is fascinating because it focuses on the broader visual and textual fields of Holocaust memorials, as well as their particular aesthetics, and thus situates them within art-historical developments, the biographies of the sculptors, and the shifting political perceptions of what was deemed desirable or not desirable to write on the plaques.... [An] excellent book.”— H-Diplo

  • Rebuilding Story Worlds: The Obscure Cities by

Rutgers University Press Rebuilding Story Worlds: The Obscure Cities by

Book SynopsisA collaboration between Belgian artist François Schuiten and French writer Benoît Peeters, The Obscure Cities is one of the few comics series to achieve massive popularity while remaining highly experimental in form and content. Set in a parallel world, full of architecturally distinctive city-states, The Obscure Cities also represents one of the most impressive pieces of world-building in any form of literature. Rebuilding Story Worlds offers the first full-length study of this seminal series, exploring both the artistic traditions from which it emerges and the innovative ways it plays with genre, gender, and urban space. Comics scholar Jan Baetens examines how Schuiten’s work as an architectural designer informs the series’ concerns with the preservation of historic buildings. He also includes an original interview with Peeters, which reveals how poststructuralist critical theory influenced their construction of a rhizomatic fictional world, one which has made space for fan contributions through the Alta Plana website. Synthesizing cutting-edge approaches from both literary and visual studies, Rebuilding Story Worlds will give readers a new appreciation for both the aesthetic ingenuity of The Obscure Cities and its nuanced conception of politics. Trade Review"In this compelling study of world making and storytelling in The Obscure Cities by François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters, Jan Baetens offers a subtle and intelligent reading of how structures of authorship, character, image, and world draw readers into a truly fictional universe in which interpretation and rereading are key. With this book, Baetens has certainly brought The Obscure Cities into its rightful place in the history of American and European comics."— Nancy Pedri, Memorial University of Newfoundland "Baetens ‘monograph is devoted to the overall concept of a series that was not originally conceived as such. The heterogeneity of the individual, complementary and contradicting volumes that stand for themselves and can be read in the context of the other volumes."— Comic.de "With clarity, insight, and depth, Jan Baetens’ Rebuilding Story Worlds gives the reader all the essential keys to navigate François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters’ sprawling graphic novel series The Obscure Cities—Belgium’s most sophisticated, contemporary bande dessinée opus."— Jean-Paul Gabilliet, author of Of Comics and Men: A Cultural History of Comic Books in AmericaTable of ContentsContents List of Illustrations 1 A New Series, A New Type of Author 2 A World of Its Own 3 More than a Possible World 4 Between Chapter and Series 5 A New Fantastic 6 In and Out the Medium 7 Doing Politics in Comics 8 Close-reading The Leaning Girl 9 A Conversation with Benoît Peeters 10 Image Gallery Acknowledgments Primary Sources Secondary Sources Index

Workers feel most satisfied while service users and communities are more likely to benefit when creative thinking can be applied to practice dilemmas. Drawing on contributions from Canada, England and Utrecht this book illustrates the transforming effect of creatively applied thinking to social problems. The first part of the book considers how use of the self can be enhanced by analytic reflection and application to difficulties facing individuals and communities. The second part shows psychodynamic theory to be a valuable aid when thinking about issues faced by social workers facing threats and accusations, therapeutic work with children and restorative youth justice. Book Synopsis019 was never going to remain the only place we worked in. From the start, it's been a laboratory that swings us into unknown directions, constantly sharpening our sense of improvisation and reinvention on the spot. For three years, from 2013 onwards, we made that old welding factory at Dok Noord in Ghent the focal point of our activities. People even started to identify the entirety of our collective, Smoke & Dust, with what was basically only the name of its nineteenth project. We became 019. The whole project turned us upside down. But in doing so, we became aware as well. We understood that the act of occupying and taking possession of the site was not the goal of our work at all. From the inside out, starting with a wooden construction in its interior and up to the billboard at an outside wall and a series of flagpoles on the roof, we gradually developed the place into an assembly of undergrounds for public and artistic encounter, an emerging space for collaboration that was grounded on the premise that all media at our disposal were common grounds to be rediscovered. That's when the work began. That's when things began to move, for real. That's when we realizedartists, architects, designers and the likewe had all turned into scenographers, regardless of our discipline: co-authors of a scene that was constructed out of margins and constraints, participants in a game of give and take that we endlessly play around a display we like to recycle. In the end, that's how 019, our handling of its space through appropriation and dispossession, became the site of a moving practice, a collaborative way of working ready to be moved, reproduced and reinvented elsewhere.

Book SynopsisIn 1966 Michael Illingworth, whose oil painting Adam and Eve appears on the front cover of this book, was awarded the inaugural Frances Hodgkins Fellowship. For the first time in New Zealand a practising artist was given a studio and paid a salary to make art for a whole year. Such support, as Frances Hodgkins herself wrote from her own experience, was capable of yielding up riches undreamed of . Poet and critic David Eggleton has described the fellowship as an emblem of cultural endeavour which ... holds a legendary status in the public imagination. The initiative and much of the early funding for the fellowship is thought to have come from poet, editor and arts patron Charles Brasch, and it was set up by the University of Otago Council. Fifty years later, the Frances Hodgkins is still going strong, one of five arts fellowships offered through the University of Otagos Humanities Division. This sumptuous book brings together the art and the stories of half a century of Frances Hodgkin

Book SynopsisBrickwork clothes, makeup-brush feet, a dog's or bird's head, monster eyes and hands, doughnut lips, flippers and accessories in the form of everything from fuel trucks to muffins: Klaudia Schifferle's paper dolls are composed of magazine cutouts collaged on A4 paper. Created from 20112016, the collages are colorful, cheeky, sometimes cute, and mostly mischievous. The artist also painted detailed renditions of some of them in oils. The use of found images endows these Paperdolls with a twofold value. They incarnate quotidian objects of our day and age, while concomitantly prying open our everyday perceptions and reminding us of sensations and moments in our own consumer lives. Paper dolls date back to ancient Chinese funeral rites and katashiro figures in Japanese healing rituals. In Europe, paper cutouts of figures for fashion-following bourgeoises evolved into a popular and inexpensive pastime for children. In the US, paper dolls had their heyday during the Great Depression. Now they have become an important and expressive medium for contemporary artists to comment on current trends and day-to-day life. And Schifferle's Paperdolls are inextricably bound up with present-day life through the use of collage, which was resurrected in the 20th century to become a signature technique of modern art. They are, in a word, paper-thin slices of modern-day life, mixed and pieced together in novel, playful and incongruous ways for posterity.

Book SynopsisMax, Maria, Andi & Co. A giant circular paintingStefan Marx's primary medium is drawing, which he employs in a wide variety of contexts. In addition to classic drawings on paper, he also illustrates record sleeves, T-shirts, skateboards and magazines. His drawings are spontaneous sketches of his observations of everyday life, with the individual and the landscape as recurring themes.Marx's idealised panorama for the Aula in the Ferdinandeum is a Tyrolean theme park, a place of urban styling. His pictorial worlds are psycho-geographic landscapes recruited from archaic and classical motifs of Tyrolean history. His panoramas reference historical and contemporary meanings; we witness the execution of Andreas Hofer in Mantua and are guests of Emperor Maximilian and his entourage. The panoramas present images such as one would expect of an idealised world. All the indicators of the good life are present: laughing landscapes, exulting animals, the naked Nordkette, etc. In contrast to classical portraits, his protagonists are not glorified; they are not there to impress. Free of all aristocratic privilege, no respectful distance is demanded of the viewer; more droll than impressive, they are a jibe at historical pathos.Stefan Marx's pictorial language requires no knowledge of art or cultural history and no familiarity with the subjects, but simply a willingness to explore the many and varied links of the narrative to the cultural history of the Tyrol. His panorama takes us on a journey of fantasy, on which we encounter fantastic figures and are confronted with purported history. His rectangular cyclorama is a quarry of Tyrolean history and culture. The pictorial spaces house a flurry of metaphors, and there are quotations and references to cultural objects from the Middle Ages to the present day, from the Museum of Tyrolean Regional Heritage or the Armoury. For Stefan Marx, drawing is a democratic pursuit. His drawings are the work of an individual, but they belong to us all. Drawing is a gift, a message, a postcard. Drawing is as naked and simple, as direct and immediate, as being sad or in love.

Book SynopsisNatural phenomenons are a well used tool to illustrate and explain financial circumstances. The economy could face tsunamis and earthquakes, it could end up in deep valleys and reach high peaks, and it could be standing in front of the fiscal cliff. The fiscal cliff illustrates an abrupt and uncontrolled economic collapse, and the imagery of state leaders falling down cliffs is one of satire drawings' best known archetypes. The metaphor is strengthened by the cliff's many cultural appearances, and it has become a cultural icon itself due to films as Thelma & Louise, Looney Tunes and the Youtube fossil Tha Cliff from 2006. In the publication Fiscal Cliff, the topographic metaphor is used as a starting point for a visual game with symbols and characters that somehow has to deal with the fiscal fall. There might be multiple reasons why the fiscal cliff occurs, but once it''s here it will affect us all.Erlend Peder Kvam (1994) is an artist and illustrator based in Oslo. Book SynopsisAndreas Dobler's third artist's book to date showcases the diversity of his artistic oeuvre, which includes visual poems, paintings, drawings, collages and objets d'art. Its suggestive title, ST. ELSEWHERE, opens up the range of possibilities to embrace far-flung and other-worldly artistic assertions, and the book opens a window on the artist's intense working process. Dobler's visual productions are accompanied by textual offshoots, which he reworks into speculative poetry and, in turn, generate new pictorial discoveries. Some of his writings trace the origins of the featured works back to an Academy of Happiness, a make-believe school that looms large in ST. ELSEWHERE and around which Dobler weaves narrative strands. Tutorials and technical considerations of craftsmanship, literary descriptions of the school grounds and facilities, the reveries of teachers and students and various other associated elements add up to a playful and ironic take on the utopia of an ideal place of development.

Book SynopsisCan a sculpture survive in the home without being domesticated into just another objecta door stop or something you hang your hat on? What are the civic duties we assign to sculpture today, in comparison to the post-war nation-building and reassertion of civilisation? At the heart of Things for Homes / Homes for Things are conversations about our social relationship to objects and the spatial relations these depend on. Prevett's enquiry is intimate and gentle, occurring as it does on a domestic scale in the homes of people who don't own art, and perhaps have never cared for it that much before. Without the expectations and politics that grand publicness entails, it embraces instead the potential for social connection through making and giving of sculpture to strangers.
