Book SynopsisThis innovative Research Handbook brings together leading international law scholars from around the world to discuss and highlight the contemporary debate regarding issues of conflict prevention and the legality of resorting to the use of armed force through to those arising during an armed conflict and in the phase between conflict and peace. The Handbook covers key conceptual topics drawn from across the three areas of jus ad bellum, jus in bello and jus post bellum. The subject matter of the included chapters range from conflict prevention through to reparation and compensation, via coverage of issues such as disarmament, the role of the Security Council, self-defense, humanitarian intervention and the responsibility to protect, targets, war crimes, private military contractors, peacekeeping, and the protection of human rights.Being the first to examine topics under these areas in one volume, the book will be of interest to scholars, academics, postgraduate and research students as well as government lawyers from various disciplinary backgrounds looking for a contemporary grounding in issues under the broad theme of international conflict and security law.Contributors: C. WildeTrade Review'Featuring some of the field's most expert thinkers, this is an adroitly constructed volume of essays in ''conflict and security law''. The writing here offers a distillation of the major legal projects in the area while dissolving some of international law's most rigid demarcations (e.g. between war and peace, or the jus ad bellum and jus in bello).' --Gerry Simpson, University of Melbourne, Australia'Events of the past fifteen years have sharpened the focus on well-known issues in international conflict and security law. What responses to international terrorism are permissible? Can humanitarian intervention be justified under international law? The Research Handbook on International Conflict and Security Law addresses these and other debates across the areas of conflict prevention, use of force and post-conflict reconstruction, with the critical insight for which the contributors are known.' --James Crawford, University of Cambridge, UKTable of ContentsContents: Introduction: International Conflict and Security Law Christian Henderson and Nigel D. • Bio-Imperialism: Disease, Terror, and the

Rutgers University Press Bio-Imperialism: Disease, Terror, and the

Book SynopsisBio-Imperialism focuses on an understudied dimension of the war on terror: the fight against bioterrorism. This component of the war enlisted the biosciences and public health fields to build up the U.S. biodefense industry and U.S. global disease control. The book argues that U.S. imperial ambitions drove these shifts in focus, aided by gendered and racialized discourses on terrorism, disease, and science. These narratives helped rationalize American research expansion into dangerous germs and bioweapons in the name of biodefense and bolstered the U.S. rationale for increased interference in the disease control decisions of Global South nations. Bio-Imperialism is a sobering look at how the war on terror impacted the world in ways that we are only just starting to grapple with. Trade Review"A concise and powerful book on the injustices and asymmetries of global health security....The book makes two important contributions to the critique of global health. As regards method, it concerns itself with the strategic use of language, through a close reading of policy, legislative, medical and scientific sources. This analytical work is given an ethical edge through the technique of ‘rhetorical re-description’ or ‘paradiastole.’"— New Genetics and Society "In this astute and timely study, D’Arcangelis tracks the rise of a racialized and gendered 'bioterror imaginary' in the U.S. through science, politics, journalism, social media, and popular culture that facilitated the conversion of warnings of bioterror into a strategy for U.S. imperialism. Bio-Imperialism offers an urgent analysis of how the US produces the threats to the health of a population it ostensibly seeks to address."— Priscilla Wald, author of Contagious: Cultures, Carriers, and the Outbreak Narrative "D’Arcangelis provides a rich, timely, must-read account of the United States’ 'bioterror imaginary' and its role in the construction of national fragility. Bio-Imperialism recounts tales of terrorism, technoscience, caregiving, and preparedness that are entangled in a nationalism conflating public health and national security. In so doing, the book provides impressive insight into the racialized and gendered dynamics underlying the United States’ representation and repurposing of science and health, and the dangers therein." — Laura Sjoberg, co-author of International Relations' Last Synthesis?Table of ContentsContents List of Illustrations Introduction: Bio-imperialism and the Entanglement of Bioscience, Public Health, and National Security 1. • The War Against Civilians: Victims of the “War on

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The War Against Civilians: Victims of the “War on

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a critical analysis of how the “war on terror” affected the civilian population in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This “forgotten war,” which started in 2001 with the US-led invasion of Afghanistan, has seen more than 212,000 people killed in war-related incidents. Whilst most of the news media shifted their attention to other conflict zones, this war rages on. Badalič has amassed a vast amount of data on the civilian victims of war from both sides of the Durand line, the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He conducted interviews in Peshawar, Quetta, Islamabad, Kabul, Jalalabad, and many other cities and villages from 2008 to 2017. His data is mostly drawn from those extensive conversations held with civilian victims of war, Afghan and Pakistani officials, human-rights activists and members of the insurgency. The book is divided into three parts. The first examines the impact the US-led coalition, Afghan security forces and paramilitary groups had on civilians, with methods of combat such as drone strikes and kill-or-capture missions. The second part focuses on civilian victims of abuses of power by Pakistani security forces, including arbitrary detentions and forced disappearances. In the final part, Badalič explores the impact of unlawful practices used by the armed insurgency – the Afghan Taliban. Overall, the book seeks to tell the story of the civilian victims of the “War on Terror".Table of Contents1. Introduction: Creating A Reign Of Terror.- 2. • Mapping Non-State Actors in International

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Mapping Non-State Actors in International

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited volume addresses the role of non-state actors (NSAs) in international relations. From their emergence in the early 20th century, entities of non-state status have played a role of increasing prominence in international politics. Scholarly work has been slow to catch up, approaching NSAs mainly through the scope of legitimacy and international law or limiting focus to NGOs, international organizations, and economic corporations. This volume remedies that, creating a typology of NSAs based on systematic and coherent analysis.Presenting a series of cases of NSAs across the continuum of international relations, the chapters firmly ground NSAs in the ontology of international relations theory. Filling a gap in the current literature, this book will be of interest to students and researchers of international relations theory, international politics, international security, diplomatic history, and European and Middle East politics, as well as policy-makers and practitioners. Table of ContentsEinleitung.- Erklärungsgegenstand: Ideologie-basierte GewaltErklärungsgegenstand: Ideologie-basierte Gewalt.- Herausforderungen für eine Theorie zur Erklärung ideologie-basierter Gewalt.- Bisherige Theorien zur Erklärung islamistischer Gewalt.- Theoretischer Rahmen.- Empirische Untersuchung.- Zusammenfassung und Schlussfolgerungen.- Literaturverzeichnis.

Book SynopsisThis book examines how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has sought to legitimise its counter-terrorism strategy in the eyes of its domestic and international audiences. An important element of CCP policy in Xinjiang has been the deployment of ordinary Chinese citizens, or the 'mass line,’ to create new realities on the ground. This book explores how the history of ideological struggle in the PRC has taken on new characteristics, as well as offering insight into how the CCP has maintained legitimacy in the eyes of its population, even as it pursues policies which are internationally controversial, shedding light on the past and future of the behaviour of the Chinese state, a subject of interest to China scholars, scholars of the Belt and Road, and counter-terrorism experts.Trade Review“Legitimacy of China’s Counter-Terrorism Approach remains a noteworthy contribution to the field. It is concisely written and contains both insight and provocative arguments relevant to not only specialists in Xinjiang and Uyghur studies but also those with an interest in Chinese security policy and terrorism and counter-terrorism studies.” (Michael Clarke, The China Quarterly, July 31, 2023)Table of ContentsTablesFiguresAcknowledgementDisclaimerChapter 1 IntroductionThe PuzzleTerrorismTerrorism threats in XinjiangTerrorism ResearchChinaMass LineA Note on Sources and MethodologyChapter OutlineChapter 2 From ‘Class Enemies’ to ‘Three Forces’Hostile ForcesMao Era: Peaceful Evolution and Two Types of ContradictionsDeng Era: Peaceful Development and Bourgeois LiberalisationJiang and Hu Era: Submerged Friend/Enemy TensionsXi Era: Revival of the Mass LineConclusionChapter 3 The Mass Line Ethos and People’s War on TerrorFengqiao ExperienceCommunity Policing‘Re-centralisation’ of security policy under Xi JinpingPeople’s War on Terror‘Hard’ and ‘soft’ approachesConclusionChapter 4 Mass Mobilisation Tactics for Countering TerrorismCo-optation of Local ActorsPatriotic believersCultural workersGrassroots propagandistsPopularisation of the state narrativesBetween Education and PropagandaConclusionChapter 5 Conclusion

  • Dynamics of Violent Extremism in South Asia:

Springer Verlag, Singapore Dynamics of Violent Extremism in South Asia:

Book SynopsisThis book offers a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted dimensions of violent extremist groups in South Asia, attending especially to the relationships between the local and regional forces influencing their emergence and activities. In addition, research in the book shows how political, security-sensitive events and processes are framed, and the factors responsible for such framing. Similarly, it discusses prevalent discourses on anti-violent extremism policy and the on-the-ground militarized preventive/reactive interventions they guide, which are inspired by ideologies that increasingly reflect controversial understandings of the experiences of people within conditions of state fragility. In doing so, the book balances attention to local conditions that frame the rise and fall, or persistency, of incidences of violent extremism. The systems-based ecological framing of issues in the book is influenced by a concern for the broader questions of securitization, global governance, poverty, (under)development, and armed conflicts in South Asia.Table of ContentsChapter 1. • A Time Bomb for Global Trade: Maritime-related

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies A Time Bomb for Global Trade: Maritime-related

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat is being done to counter threats of maritime terrorism and how effective are the safeguards? The author presents evidence that Al-Qaeda aims to disrupt the seaborne trading system, the backbone of the modern global economy, and would use a crude nuclear explosive device or a radiological bomb to do so if it could get its hands on either, and position it to go off in a key port-city, shipping strait, or waterway. Improving maritime security is especially important for the United States, Canada, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, and for China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and other economies in East Asia that have extensive seaborne trade. It is doubly vital for the world's largest container transshipment hubs cum seaports like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Rotterdam. This book discusses the major threats to seaborne trade and its land links in the global supply chain, their potential impact, the new security measures in place or pending for ships, ports and cargo containers, and recommendations for preventing or handling a catastrophic terrorist attack designed to disrupt world trade.

  • ISEAS Terrorism in Indonesia and the Perceived Oppression of Muslims Worldwide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisVarious motivations underlying terrorism uncovered by recent scholarship include the radicals' desire for Muslim unity, political interest, yearning to correct social and economic deprivation in the Muslim world, and simply anti-Westernism.This article focuses on the radicals' call for Muslim solidarity and how this tends towards becoming their primary motivation for perpetrating terrorism. It discusses how radical groups and individuals exaggerate the perceived oppression of Muslims worldwide and how this encourages their sympathizers in planning, fundraising and/or executing terrorist attacks. The so-called ummah solidarity discourse is coupled with the prevalence of the dogma that Muslims are targets of Western or foreign oppression. This has legitimized jihadist terrorists' use of violence and facilitated the recruitment of new terrorists. Besides regular crackdowns on terrorists and putting limitations on access to radical websites and other Internet sources, this article contends that the Indonesian security apparatuses and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must work with the embassies from India, China and Myanmar based in Jakarta to nullify any likelihood of terror attacks on their embassy compounds or their citizens.
