Book SynopsisYou’re nicked is the first comprehensive study of television police series in the UK. It reveals how British television’s most popular genre has developed stylistically, politically and philosophically from 1955 to the present. Each chapter focuses on a particular decade, investigating how the most-watched series represent the inner workings of the police station, the civilian life of criminals and the private lives of police officers. Book SynopsisThe only companion book to Paul Thomas Anderson''s acclaimed 1999 film, Magnolia: The Illustrated Screenplay includes the complete shooting script, introduction and script notes by Anderson, an interview with the writer/director, and complete cast and crew credits.Anderson deliberately withheld information about his new film during production because “I feel lately as if I know everything about a movie before I see it, and I really want the audience to discover this purely.” Featuring an ensemble cast and, in an unbilled role, Tom Cruise (who called Anderson to express interest in working with him), the film is now described by New Line as follows:There are stories of coincidence and chance and intersections and strange things told. There is the story of a Dying Father, the Young Wife, his Lost Son, the Caretaker, the Boy Genius, his Father, the Game Show Host, the Daughter, the Mother, the Ex-Boy Genius and the Police Officer in Love. There are nine plots that tell one story, set in the San Fernando Valley on a day full of rain with no clouds.Along with the story of a pharmacist in London, a scuba diver and an accidental suicide, this is the story of “Magnolia.” This is a story about family relationships and bonds that have been broken and need to be mended in one day.

  • Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in

Intellect Books Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWith a foreword by Diane Negra and Jorie Lagerway As television has finally started to create more leading roles for women, the female antiheroine has emerged as a compelling and dynamic character type. Television Antiheroines looks closely at this recent development, exploring the emergence of women characters in roles typically reserved for men, particularly in the male-dominated genre of the crime and prison drama. The essays collected in Television Antiheroines are divided into four sections or types of characters: mafia women, drug dealers and aberrant mothers, women in prison, and villainesses. Looking specifically at shows such as Gomorrah, Mafiosa, The Wire, The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy, Orange is the New Black, and Antimafia Squad, the contributors explore the role of race and sexuality and focus on how many of the characters transgress traditional ideas about femininity and female identity, such as motherhood. They examine the ways in which bad women are portrayed and how these characters undermine gender expectations and reveal the current challenges by women to social and economic norms. Television Antiheroines will be essential reading for anyone with a serious interest in crime and prison drama and the rising prominence of women in nontraditional roles.Trade Review'This vital collection profitably meditates on the intersections of crime studies, feminist and postfeminist studies and television studies, and shines a light on the expanding representational possibilities for women that are taking place in global television production. [...] I suspect that Television Antiheroines will enjoy widespread adoption as a text in a number of university courses for differing constituencies of students. The essays all feature clear and accessible prose and, further, the breadth and array of the texts, and detailed bibliography for each essay, will make the collection interesting for media studies scholars (feminist or otherwise) working on a spectrum of contexts.' -- Ellen Nerenberg, Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies'Thanks to its cultural approach, Television Antiheroines depicts in an original way the possibilities opened up by ‘bad’ behaviours in mainstream images of femininity. Each chapter analyses characters’ everyday lives, underlining how micropolitics questions conventional gender roles. Such a subversive process is also sustained by the idea that the representation of moral and behavioural contradictions undermines the hegemonic positions still dominant in television series. In doing so, the volume also shows how television can produce alternative identity models for women, thus contributing to a redefinition of current gender paradigms.' -- Ilaria De Pascalis, European Journal of Women’s Studies'I began this review by querying whether the antiheroine exists; after spending time with Television Antiheroines, and becoming well acquainted with Rosy Abate, Imma Savastano, Sandra Paoli, Carmela Soprano, Carmen van Walraven, Nancy Botwin, Gemma Teller, Mags Bennett, Teresa Mendoza, Big Boo, Nicky Nichols, Livia Marine, Kate Leigh, Tillly Devine, and others, I have no doubt of the socio-cultural richness and transcultural purchase of the TV antiheroine. In identifying a significant new trend in the transnational televisual depiction of gender, power, crime, and identity, Television Antiheroines sets high standards for future feminist media scholarship on female antihero TV.' -- Tanya Horeck, Feminist Media Studies'The television series examined make for good television and the chapters in this volume make for an interesting read, both individually and taken together. With its unprecedented collective focus on anti-heroines in the business of crime, the edited volume offers critical insights in largely well written articles that will allow readers to discover or perhaps reevaluate how women behaving badly contribute to an expanded realm of possibility for female characters in popular culture.' -- Claudia Schippert * Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture *'[T]his collection of high-minded studies aims to examine how women have been allowed to travel in the same trajectory (the new “golden age of television” started by show-runners like David Chase and Vince Gilligan) gave way to equally strong visionaries like Jenji Kohan (Weeds, Orange Is the New Black) and numerous telenovelas in Brazil, Colombia, and New Zealand.' -- Popmatters, Christopher John Stevens'Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in Crime and Prison Drama is a strong collection of academic scholarship, and is a required purchase for scholars whose research relates to gender roles and female agency, particular in television. The book will undoubtedly serve graduate students and established professionals in the fields of critical, cultural and media studies very well. These 13 essays are highly detailed and effortlessly engaging. Through examination of antiheroines such as The Sopranos’ Carmela Soprano and Weeds’ Nancy Botswin, as well as foreign protagonists such as Penoza’s Carmen Walraven and the Spanish-language La Reina del Sur’s Teresa Mendoza, Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in Crime and Prison Drama raises intriguing and timely questions regarding feminism and female identity.' -- Graeme Wilson, Critical Studies in Media Communication'The contributors to the book successfully manage to ‘explore atypical portrayals of femininity’ (p. 4) from an international perspective, which is their joint goal as outlined in the Editor’s Introduction. Written for a wide contemporary readership, the book will be of practical use to students of communication and media studies and must not be overlooked by academic philosophers inasmuch as the authors’ discussions contribute to debates on the ontological and existential structures of human existence.' -- Elena Fell, European Journal of Communication'With so many television series circulating the airwaves and beyond, it can be challenging to find those worthy enough to fill our precious leisure time. Thankfully Milly Buonanno’s edited collection of essays not only draws our attention to the contemporary television landscape’s changing typography, but it is also a useful resource for those looking for their next binge-worthy programme. The book’s emphasis on ‘female-centred forms with a particular focus on the liminality of women associated with criminality’ (xi) historicises the range of unconventional portrayals of womanhood in the 21st century, defines these depictions in terms of their antiheroine aspects and investigates some specific international instantiations.' -- ichael P Young, Critical Studies in Television: The International Journal of Television Studies'Italian scholar Milly Buonanno of Rome’s La Sapienza University has often complained that, in this second Golden Age of TV, academic attention is focused almost exclusively on the United States. Even in a country like Spain, newspa- pers dutifully recap each episode of American premium- cable and streaming-service series while ignoring their own local productions. Hence, the importance of Buonanno’s new collection Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in Crime and Prison Drama, which tracks its female figures on screens from Italy and France to Australia and Brazil.' -- Paul Julian Smith, Film Quarterly'Milly Buonanno’s anthology, Television Antiheroines: Women Behaving Badly in Crime and Prison Drama, explores depictions of unconventional womanhood in twenty-first-century television. It investigates how heteronormative ideologies of gender are challenged as female characters transgress feminine norms of passivity, purity, motherhood, goodness and caring. Split into four sections with thirteen contributions, the book sets out to analyse the figure of the antiheroine in international programming by investigating the transgressive possibilities enabled when characters refuse to socially conform to the laws of society, gender and the criminal underworld.' -- Katherine Whitehurst, Journal of Popular TelevisionTable of ContentsPart I: Mafia Women Buonanno, Villez, Akass and McCabe Chapter 1: Godmothers in Italian Mafia Story: Or 'Something Else Besides a Mother' Milly Buonanno Chapter 2: Mafiosa, Monstruous Beauty: Power and Loneliness of a Female Mob Leader Barbara Villez Chapter 3: Adieu Carmela Soprano! Book SynopsisThe goal of this book is to guide writers toward creating more authenticity in visual storytelling. One of the needs for art is the mirror, a reflection of human existence and what is glorious, tragic, wonderful, and funny about life. In an age of “post-truth,” where derivative and grotesquely bogus stories are abundant, globally networked, and digitally streamed, this book examines what it means to both artists and audiences when the mirror is consistently distorted, inaccurate, and biased. The book offers a guide for finding authenticity in fictional narrative, regardless of genre or form. The book is intended as a compass for writers to better understand and confront the truths they want to reveal through narrative stories and how to find legitimacy in the fictional characters and situations they create. One element that sets this book apart from others is the use of storyboarding to explain ideas. There are many books that teach fundamentals of writing and producing for the screen, promising the reader great success through formula. This book is a guide for writers in finding their unique creative voice. While the emphasis of this book is on creating scripts intended for production of moving image media, the guide can be adapted to the creativity of various types of storytellers working in a variety of media fields. For 11 seasons, that's how Dr. Frasier Crane answered the callers to his radio show, and viewers all around the world.Dr. Crane may not have been the most popular character on Cheers, nor would Kelsey Grammer have been the most likely of the show's stars to get his own series, yet between 1993 and 2004, Frasier was one of the most successful sitcoms in an era of all-time great shows.Frasier is still beloved by millions today, whether they're just discovering the radio shrink, his snooty brother, cranky father, kooky housekeeper, and sassy producer on streaming services, or whether they've tuned in to the Crane family's Shakespearean mayhem for the best part of almost 30 years.SAMPLE QUOTES: 'It may be an unwise man who doesn't learn from his own mistakes, but it's an absolute idiot that doesn't learn from other people's.' Book SynopsisWhat happens when 'happy ever after' isn't quite so simple? Today's attitudes to love and romance are as varied and diverse as individuals, and audiences want and need more sophisticated, authentic films that show how we live and love now. So what does this mean for the screenwriter developing a romcom? And how do they write heart-warming stories for a genre that is constantly evolving, from bromcom to zomcom to famcom? Moving away from rigid and limited definitions that have evolved out of mainstream genre films, the book embraces a working definition that crosses cultural and national boundaries to give screenwriters around the world a truly international perspective on writing comedic love stories. It will be the first screenwriting guide to reflect the diversity of approaches in today's films that deal with the human need for emotional and physical intimacy using humour - the contemporary romantic comedy. Features of the book include: Illuminating, challenging and provocative about the state of the rom-com genre. Why do some films feel so dated, while others are perennially relevant? Stimulating creative exercises at the end of every chapter, and 'hot tips' throughout. Adaptable concepts that can be applied to both feature films and short films. Encourages screenwriters to define their own values about love to ensure their voice and message is original - and commercial. Book SynopsisJordan Peele's powerful thriller Get Out debuted in 2017 to enormous public and critical acclaim, a Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? for the age of Obama and Trump that scared audiences and skewered white liberal pieties at the same time. Rather than rely on popular archetypes, Peele weaves together the material realities and daily manifestations of horror with sociopolitical fears and elements of true suspense, and combines them with pitch-perfect satire and a timely cultural critique. This companion paperback to the film presents the Peele's Oscar-winning screenplay alongside supplementary material. Featuring an essay by author and scholar Tananarive Due and in-depth annotations by the director, this publication is richly illustrated with more than 150 stills from the motion picture and presents alternate endings, deleted scenes and an inside look at the concepts and behind-the-scenes production of the film. Continuing in the legacy of 1960s paperbacks that documented the era's most significant avant-garde films such as Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon, Jean-Luc Godard's Masculin/Feminin and Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventurra Get Out is an indispensable guide to this pioneering and groundbreaking cinematic work.Jordan Peele (born 1979) is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer and director. Peele's directorial debut, Get Out (2017), earned him an Academy Award for Best Original screenplay as well as nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. In 2012, Peele founded Monkeypaw Productions, which amplifies marginalized voices and cultivates artistic, thought-provoking projects across film, television and digital platforms, including Peele's follow-up to Get Out, the thriller Us (2019).Trade ReviewNamed 'Best Screenplay of the 21st Century (So Far!)' * Writer's Guild of America *This svelte, softcover, pocket-sized volume memorializes Peele’s Oscar-winning script for the first time in print. Proceeding from a new foreword by Peele, 150 gorgeous black-and-white stills thread through the screenplay and into an appendix rich with brand-new material, including cut dialogue, deleted scenes, and Peele’s annotations on the whole production. But the Annotated Screenplay’s most ingenious intervention into the dense critical discourse around Get Out was to tap Tananarive Due to author its proper introduction, an essay titled “Get Out and the Black Horror Aesthetic.” Due is a leading scholar in the emerging study of Black horror, and even teaches a course at UCLA on the subject called “The Sunken Place.” [...] This new framing unlocks a deeper level of engagement with the film... -- Ryan Coleman * Los Angeles Review of Books *Blending horror and dark humour, the director’s multi award-winning screenplay reveals the terrifying realities of racism in America. Famously, Peele has described his directorial debut as a “documentary”. Now, the annotated version gives fans the opportunity to learn more about Peele’s screenwriting process. -- Vivian Yeung * Crack *Peele’s 2017 thriller made the director’s name and won the Oscar for best original screenplay. Now the script is available in book form, illustrated with stills. -- Keith Bradsher * New York Times *Reading the notes, which are extracted from a thoughtful but very conversational interview Peele did for the book...makes you feel like you’re watching the movie with Peele himself. -- Naomi Elias * Film School Rejects *[In Get Out: the Annotated Screenplay,] Peele uncovers additional subtle clues and allusions in the flm that may not be essential knowledge but give insight on the construction of the characters, their psyches, and ultimately their interactions. -- Ina Archer * Film Comment *Dive deeper into the Sunken Place with this dissection of Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning screenplay, including dialogue from deleted scenes and an essay on the black horror aesthetic. -- Mekado Murphy * New York Times: 2019 Holiday Gift Guide *
