Book SynopsisUnlock your children’s potential by helping them build their strengths. This game-changing book shows us the extraordinary results of focusing on our children’s strengths rather than always trying to correct their weaknesses. Most parents struggle with this shift because they suffer from a negativity bias, thanks to evolutionary development, giving them “strengths-blindness.” By showing us how to throw the “strengths switch,” Lea Waters demonstrates how we can not only help our children build resilience, optimism, and achievement but we can also help inoculate them against today’s pandemic of depression and anxiety.            As a strengths-based scientist for more than twenty years, ten of them spent focusing on strengths-based parenting, Waters has seen how this approach enhances self-esteem and energy in both children and teenagers. Yet more on the plus side: parents find it a particularly exciting and rewarding way to raise children. With many suggestions for specific ways to interact with your kids, Waters demonstrates how to discover strengths and talents in our children, how to use positive emotions as a resource, how to build strong brains, and even how to deal with problem behaviors and talk about difficult situations and emotions. As revolutionary yet simple as Mindset and Grit, The Strength Switch will show parents how a small shift can yield enormous results.

Book Synopsis''A refreshingly healthy take on social media and particularly good on body image'' Lorraine Candy, Sunday TimesThe teen years are tough - for teens and for parents. Many parents dread the moodiness, dishonesty, preference of friends over family, exam stress, and the push for greater independence. Mothers have a pivotal role to play; this is a guidebook for parents and mothers of girls in particular as they navigate the rocky teenage landscape with their daughters aged 8 to 18. It aims to help them embrace the potential of their child''s teenage years by marking this time of growing maturity for girls and celebrating it with them. We celebrate birth, marriage and death, but this important life-transition from child to young adult is nowadays rarely acknowledged within an appropriate community. With mental health issues in young people on the rise, and social media, reality television and smartphone culture serving to exacerbate these problems, it

Nelson MandelaChildhood, as a stage in human development, has been steadily eroded. Children today are introduced to 21st-century adult values and behaviour at an increasingly early age, long before they are developmentally ready to cope with them. We expend immense time and effort attending to their material needs while simultaneously neglecting their developmental needs. In this important polemic, Sue Palmer believes that if we do not get a grip on this problem soon, the increase in developmental disorders, behavioural difficulties and mental health problems recorded by experts over recent decades will soon spiral out of control.Sue diTrade ReviewThis is an in-depth scholarly work which provides a fascinating look at the way girls grow up and develop in our modern era, and the high demands which are placed on them from an early age. * PARENTS IN TOUCH *For Palmer, the way to ensure that girls are raised to become happy and healthy adults is to reclaim motherhood and train women to become better at it. -- Sian Griffiths * SUNDAY TIMES *Educationalist, literacy expert and writer Sue Palmer is well-known for her brilliant books on childhood and the raising of boys; now she has turned her attention to our daughters - and the result should be required reading for all parents, teachers and grandparents. -- Bel Mooney * DAILY MAIL *An excellent book -- Vanessa Feltz * BBC LONDON *This is a readable and useful addition to and increasingly urgent debate which needs to be brought out further into the open. * CATHOLIC HERALD *Not a chick-lit tale as the title suggests, but a follow-up to Palmer's book Toxic Childhood, published in 2006. This time round, her aim is to ensure that girls become happy, healthy adults. How? • Hes Not Lazy Guide to Better Grades and a Great

Union Square & Co. Hes Not Lazy Guide to Better Grades and a Great

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA relatable, interactive workbook designed to help teenage boys acknowledge and overcome their issues with poor academic motivation. The book also offers parents advice and exercises to help them become their son's ally, rather than his adversary. This teen-friendly, hands-on, activity-oriented workbook offers a unique approach to school success: there are no study skills here-instead boys are challenged to examine the reasons they procrastinate and encouraged to be honest about their values and goals. Each short chapter delivers its message through illustrations, exercises, and stories about real teens that hit close to home. The tone is edgy (and often entertaining), with no punches pulled. The author's aim is clear: to help teens reassess their strategy of disengagement. Parents will immediately see the appeal of the workbook because it offers the direction and lessons their sons refuse to hear from them-while keeping them involved in the process.Trade ReviewPraise for He's Not Lazy (Hardcover): *“Clinical psychologist Price offers one of the most significant books of the year in this new look at an old problem—the underperforming teenage boy. . . . With today’s kids being pushed harder than ever to perform and succeed at an early age, Price’s book brings an important voice to a much needed conversation. VERDICT Highly recommended.” — Library Journal (Starred review) “Price addresses a situation he refers to as ‘opting out,’ in which teen boys appear lazy when in fact they are reacting to fear and pressure by shunning school with avoidance and denial. Price offers examples, lessons, and advice from his 25 years as a psychologist. While the book is filled with well-documented research, it is accessible to general readers. Price helps readers make a paradigm shift in how they view their sons’ behavior, explains the science behind human brain development, provides instructions for creating a plan for success, and most importantly, outlines how parents can change their own attitudes. The parents’ change in perspective is the most important key; in the process, they will help their sons create self-sufficient, self-regulated plans. Parents, college students, teachers, and psychologists will gain a better understanding of the problem and know how to help teen boys who are going through it have a successful school career. A good addition for public library parenting collections as well as academic libraries.” —Booklist “Price’s book will provide inspiration for scores of parents seeking to understand why their sons are floundering, and will encourage greater acceptance for how today’s teenage boys face challenges.” —Publishers Weekly “. . . a user-friendly text for parents and patients . . . Although geared towards an understanding of boys, many of these pearls of wisdom are easily applicable to girls given the authors heavy leaning on gender neutral developmental theories and science. . . . the unexpected genius of He’s Not Lazy is the comprehensive yet gentle way Price explores parents’ intergenerational contributions to their son’s difficulties. This makes He’s Not Lazy a worthy purchase for parents and clinicians alike.” —NJ Psychologist

Book SynopsisAll teens today, born after 2000, were thrust into a world with challenges and opportunities non-existent for previous generations. The compelling natures of the internet and social media, combined with the accelerated accumulation of information and changing facts, place exceedingly high demands on their brains'' still developing critical control centers. Without guided opportunities, though, their brains will not achieve adequate capability to develop these control centers until their late twenties or beyond. While this book is for teens, it is parents, dedicated to their children''s success, who will guide them to the book''s resources so they can develop the brain circuits they need now, instead delaying a further ten years.Teens will enjoy learning about the neuroscience describing how their brains learn best and then choosing the activities they like, to activate their brain''s neuroplasticity to build their essential control networks now. With the implementation by teens of the book's 20 Keys, the future of our young workforce and eventual leaders is brighter than ever. -- Wayne Carley, Publisher, STEM MagazineSometimes, it’s easy to think teens aren’t using their brains at all. This impressive book shows that in reality, teens have everything they need to use their brains more efficiently. Full of science-backed tips, it’s a must-read for all parents and their teens to help navigate the tumultuous teenage years. -- Esta Pratt-Kielley, NBC Universal, Assistant Producer NBC News Learn Parent ToolkitDr. Judy Willis is a unicorn -- a brilliant neuroscientist, savvy educator, compassionate parent, and skilled writer who can translate the inscrutable language of brain research into helpful tactics for normal people. Teen Brainpower will empower teens to weather the stormy seas of adolescence with solid research-based strategies for optimizing this critical time in their development. -- Betty Ray, former director of Programming and Innovation, EDUTOPIA;If you have a teenager, work with teenagers, or even just know a teenager: Unlocking Teen Brainpower: 20 Keys to Boosting Attention, Memory, and Efficiency is for you. Equipped with comprehensive expertise, and a deep understanding of the human condition, Dr. Willis easily navigates the winding roads of neuroscience, and surfaces with insightful takeaways and tangible advice for every reader. The real power in Dr. Willis’ work is in her ability to push every person’s thinking on just how much the human brain – specifically, their own – can accomplish. Working with Dr. Willis has been one of the greatest gifts of my professional career, but the biggest impression she’s left on me has been a personal one – expanding my perception of my own capabilities. Dr. Willis is refreshingly kind, intellectually honest and an invaluable thought leader in the education space. It’s been a privilege to learn from Dr. Willis. I only hope you give yourself the same opportunity. -- Gabbi Timmis, NBC Universal, Assistant Producer NBC News Learn Parent ToolkitIn the 1970s we had Judy Bloom, a warm, caring voice who spoke to teens in a way they could understand and who served as a friend and guide. Fifty years later, in 2020 we have Judy Willis who does the same for the youth of today. In a clear and coherent voice, Dr. Willis makes concrete recommendations in a way that teens can relate to and offers suggestions that are sure to make a difference to those who are willing to help themselves. Anxiety, stress, technology, peer pressure, mental health…Challenges we have had for decades are now, finally, openly discussed. Willis offers teens concrete steps to take charge by establishing focus (identifying what tips their attention), planning and organizing (rather than becoming hostage to others’ agendas) and identifying ways to manage their own emotions by understanding how feelings change how we act, react and learn. She then guides teens in the ways they can improve their decision-making networks in a pro-active, forward looking approach. Her recommendations are finalized by a chapter on Memory as she explains how they are formed as well as their vital role in all learning. Her work is practical and encouraging. She offers specific ideas about how to better encode information so as to enhance retrieval and does so in a calming, friendly voice. While many recommend that teens of today need extra support, the five “doors” Willis suggests include concrete activities that do so. -- Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, Professor of Education Harvard University Extension; Director, Brain, Mind and Educational Development InstituteTable of ContentsAn Opening Note to Adults Getting Started for Teens Door One: Focus Key 1: Discover the Password for Your Attention Gate Key 2: Taking Charge of Your Attention-Control System Key 3: Playing Games to Build Your Attention and Concentration Key 4: Busting Boredom Key 5: Replacing Multitasking with Single-Tasking Door Two: Planning and Organizing Key 6: Working Smarter, Not Harder Key 7: Using Visual Organizers Key 8: Planning, Not Scrambling Key 9: Keeping Up Long-Term Effort Door Three: Managing Your Emotions Key 10: Navigating Your Brain’s Emotional Highways Key 11: Preventing Your Emotions From Taking Control Key 12: Boost Your Control, Confidence, and Effectiveness Door Four: Judgment Key 13: Priming Your Brain to Make Wiser Decisions Key 14: Resisting First Responses Key 15: Activating Your Powers to Push Boundaries Key 16: Making Good Mistakes Door Five: Memory Key 17: Taking Control of What Memory Sticks Key 18: Depositing Memory for Easy Withdrawal Key 19: Remembering What You Read Key 20: Building Memories That Last A Closing Note for Teens … And One for AdultsAbout the Author

Book SynopsisWhen you’re pregnant you think: ‘I’m having a baby’, not a person who will eventually catch trains by themselves, share a fridge with ten strangers, go to a festival in Croatia without succumbing to a drug overdose, and one day, bring you a gin and tonic when your mother is dying. We imagine the teenage years as a sort of domestic meteor strike, when our dear, sweet child, hitherto so trusting and mild, is suddenly replaced by a sarcastic know-all who isn’t interested in the wisdom we have to pass on. But with great honesty and refreshingly bracing wit, Stephanie Calman shows that adolescence in fact begins much earlier, around the age of seven. And having nurtured them through every stage of development, from walking to school by themselves to their first all-night party, you find yourself alone – bereaved even – as they skip off to university without a second glance. Candid, touching and very, very funny, Confessions of a Bad Mother: The Teenage Years offers hope to despairing and exhausted parents everywhere. Book SynopsisFrom Berkeley to the Bronx, teenage addiction has reached epidemic levels. Parents may suspect their teen’s substance use, but often don’t know if their teen is addicted or what to do about it. Dr. Laurence Westreich, an addiction expert and the father of two teenagers, helps parents navigate the fraught addiction landscape in A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction. Divided into three sections, this book—based on the author’s decades of experience evaluating and treating teenagers who use substances—guides parents from the moment they suspect their teen has a substance abuse problem to the steps families must take after intensive treatment. Dr. Westreich: •Lays out the facts of teen addiction and explains how to recognize a problem with a teen •Details what parents need to know about the substances that teenagers commonly use •Provides information on what to do about the substance abuse, including how to find good one-on-one addiction therapy, how to encourage a teen to enter an outpatient program or inpatient facility, and how to line up aftercare treatment Best of all, he includes “tough talk” dialogues that parents can tailor to their specific situation with their teen. This practical, hopeful, and reassuring book helps parents put their teen on the healthy and life-affirming road to recovery.Trade Review"Dr. Westreich has written an excellent resource for parents, teenagers and clinicians dealing with a wide array of problems that go far beyond the simple matter of substance abuse recognition. This is a very thorough book that addresses the diagnosis and treatment of such varied conditions as alcohol abuse to eating disorders. Although many books have been written on this subject, Dr. Westreich has developed a practical text that combines scientific expertise with a practical approach. As a sports medicine physician, it is also refreshing to see a substance abuse book cover the difficult and often unrecognized topic of anabolic steroid abuse in teenagers. This is an impressive work and I will definitely recommend it to my teenage patients and their parents."—Gary Green, MD, Medical Director, Major League Baseball “As Director of the National Office of Drug Control Policy, I saw firsthand how parents and families struggle to find the best way to help their teenagers cope with substance use and abuse problems. In A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction, Dr. Westreich gives practical, sensible advice about how to address teens and get them the care they need, with the firmness and compassion that only a parent can provide. I recommend it as a first line of defense if your teen is exhibiting the signs of substance use or abuse, or other addictive behaviors.” —Gen. Barry McCaffrey (USA ret.) "Dr. Westreich masterfully provides a skilled balance between the science and art of understanding addictions in teens. Using both case examples and didactics, he provides a very pragmatic guide that is based on professionally accepted methods punctuated by his clinical experience in leading a child out of an addiction. A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction will be a very important asset to any family who is suffering with teenage addiction.” —Timothy Willens, MD, Clinical Director at the Center for Center for Addiction Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital “Dr. Westreich’ s book presents a commonsense and user-friendly model for family members who want to help their drug- and alcohol-using teen. The scenarios and dialogues give valuable direction for managing an addicted teen’s often self-destructive and frightening behavior, and would be useful for anyone in this situation.” —Dr. Herbert D. Kleber, Founder and Director Emeritus of the Division on Substance Abuse at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the New York State Psychiatric Institute “Dad, I’m fine! Marijuana is natural. I need it to study. But, you did drugs, dad. Dr. Westreich has heard them all. And now he has put all his incredible experience, science, wisdom, and, yes, common sense in A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction. Book SynopsisAnxiety is the most common mental-health disorder in the United States, affecting nearly one-third of both adolescents”—New York TimesIf you’re the parent of a teenager experiencing chronic anxiety, you are not alone, and this book can help you. Today’s teens are high-strung and socially overextended. We shrug it off as a millennial problem, but is it? In a world that encourages the quick fix, instant gratification, and real-time feedback, can we really expect our children to cope as we did less than two decades ago, in the land of handshakes, eye contact, elbow grease, and grit? This book is a product of a combination of three very different perspectives: those of the anxious teen, the parent, and the therapist. We need to understand what we’ve created in terms of our current society to gain proper insight on why we’re seeing increasingly rising levels of anxiety in our teenagers. Topics include: Physical and Emotional Symptoms of Anxiety Teens and Self-Harm Anxiety and Gut Health Sports: Concussions and Anxiety Natural Ways to Help Your Teen Cope And much, much more Within each chapter, author (and parent) Jennifer Browne and co-author (Jennifer’s teenage son) Cody Buchanan, who struggles with anxiety and depression, will weigh in on what this affliction feels like, physically, mentally, and emotionally. They share personal experiences to help parents better understand their teens and learn a lot along the way.

Book Synopsis'SUCH AN IMPORTANT BOOK... ESSENTIAL READING FOR PARENTS' Gabby Logan'INCREDIBLY POWERFUL... A MUST-READ' Victoria DerbyshireWhen Dan died, I realised many things. I realised drugs were closer to our door than I'd thought. I realised drugs have become normalised for young people. I realised drugs are more affordable, accessible and available than ever before. And I realised I didn't know enough, and nor did Dan, to navigate the choices and come back alive. When Daniel Spargo-Mabbs was 16, he went to a party and never came home. The party was an illegal rave and Daniel - bright, popular, big-hearted prom king Dan - died from a fatally strong overdose of MDMA.In the seven years since, the range of substances has become wider, the levels of exposure higher, and the threat to young people's physical and mental health from drugs greater than ever before. Despite this, there is almost no guidance for parents to help their children navigate this perilous landscape and to stay safe. To come home at night. To grow up.This book is everything Fiona Spargo-Mabbs wishes she'd known, everything she wishes she'd done, before she lost her son. Because however you parent, and whatever you do, at some point your child is likely to be in a situation where they have to make a decision about drugs. What if that decision is 'yes'? Do they know what the risks are? Do they have strategies they can bring to bear if things go wrong? I Wish I'd Known interweaves the story of one family's terrible loss with calm, measured and practical advice for parents. It explores the risks posed by illegal drugs, and explains the way the adolescent brain makes decisions. There is practical advice for saying safe, information on reducing harm, and 'talking points' for parents and their children to do, talk about, look at, look up or consider.A life lost to drugs is a loss like no other. Throughout the book, Daniel's story - his life, his death and what happened afterwards - not only provides a compelling reminder of the importance of those conversations, but also serves as an unforgettable eulogy to a son, brother, boyfriend and friend whose legacy continues to touch, and perhaps even save, the lives of other young people.Trade ReviewIncredibly powerful and also very practical. Fiona wants to make sure no mum or dad ever has to go through what she went through. This book is a must-read. * Victoria Derbyshire *This is such an important book[...] Fiona has used her devastatingly sad experience with Daniel to help all of us and this book should be essential reading for parents of teenagers. * Gabby Logan *Incredibly powerful. I can't imagine what it must have been like to write [this book]. But in amongst the heart-breaking story, the information, advice and evidence is meticulously researched, and navigates every parent's worst nightmare without scaremongering. Every parent should read this: it's not a frightening message, it's empowering, and a message of hope. * Dr Suzi Gage, psychologist, podcaster and author of 'Say Why to Drugs' *A powerful and important book... Beautifully and poignantly written. I would recommend this book to every parent I know. * Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore *Written with determination, humility and sadness - any parent or carer will be better informed and wiser after reading it. * Professor Dame Carol Black *Fiona's story is heart-breaking, but her honesty and generosity in telling it will undoubtedly prevent other parents from finding themselves in a similar situation. This book is an absolute must for any parent wanting to have a meaningful conversation with their children about drugs. * Alicia Drummond, MBACP Accred., Founder, Teen Tips *A vital book which has the power to prevent tragic drug related deaths among young people. A must read for any parent. * Paul North, Volteface *Dan's beautiful, intelligent, witty, big-hearted character is the golden thread in I Wish I'd Known. [From] living through the most painful experience a parent can face, I know I Wish I'd Known will grow many good things from a very bad thing. * Emma Crawshaw, CEO, Crew2000 *Beautifully written... a personal journey through the loss of a son, the book [also] provides a valuable resource of factual detail about drugs and alcohol. Along the way, Brooks takes readers on a tour of the websites that most parenting manuals would rather pretend don't exist. Yet this is the stuff your kids are all over, on a daily basis. There is porn, there are hallucinogens, there is cyberbullying and suicidal ideation. Brooks' point is that to remain completely unaware of their existence can mean that as a parent, you end up getting blindsided. And being blindsided means you won't know what to say and how to say it when things go wrong. You'll be surprised, shocked but you'll also be reassured. This book will help you to understand and support your kids. They won't thank you, but they might hate you less.Trade ReviewThe most reassuring thing about this book is that it's so good. Wilfrid Laurier University Press The Dominion of Youth: Adolescence and the Making

Book SynopsisAdolescence, like childhood, is more than a biologically defined life stage: it is also a sociohistorical construction. The meaning and experience of adolescence are reformulated according to societal needs, evolving scientific precepts, and national aspirations relative to historic conditions. Although adolescence was by no means a "discovery" of the early twentieth century, it did assume an identifiably modern form during the years between the Great War and 1950. The Dominion of Youth: Adolescence and the Making of Modern Canada, 1920 to 1950 captures what it meant for young Canadians to inhabit this liminal stage of life within the context of a young nation caught up in the self-formation and historic transformation that would make modern Canada. Because the young at this time were seen paradoxically as both the hope of the nation and the source of its possible degeneration, new policies and institutions were developed to deal with the "problem of youth." This history considers how young Canadians made the transition to adulthood during a period that was "developmental"âboth for youth and for a nation also working toward individuation. During the years considered here, those who occupied this "dominion" of youth would see their experiences more clearly demarcated by generation and culture than ever before. With this book, Cynthia Comacchio offers the first detailed study of adolescence in early-twentieth-century Canada and demonstrates how young Canadians of the period became the nation's first modern teenagers.Trade Review``Extensively research ... this book makes an important contribution to the history of youth, to family history, and to Canadian history more broadly.'' -- Canadian Historical Association Bulletin, Volume 34, Number 2, Summer 2008, 200809``This study is remarkable on several fronts. No study to date has analyzed concomitantly the evolving social perceptions of youth, and the changing attitudes and activites of teenagers alongside an analysis of wider social developments in such depth and over such an extended period of time.... Not unrelated ... is her impressive use of extensive and varied sources.... [Comacchio's] study lays new `historiographical ground work' that will assuredly become a mandatory point of departure for future scholars.'' -- Nicole Neatby, Simon Fraser University -- Canadian Historical Review, November 2008, 200811``Offers a fascinating account of young Canadians during the first half of the twentieth century. In a thoroughly detailed and densely researched work, Comacchio synthesizes several important themse related to adolescent historiogrgaphy including theoretical concepts of youth, familial relations, dating, school, work, and leisure.... What makes the analysis truly innovative is the attention paid to the 1920s as the focus for the emergence of a modern adolescent concept.'' -- Carrie Dickenson, McMaster University -- H-NET BOOK REVIEW, March 2007, 200704``The Dominion of Youth is an outstanding achievement that will be useful to researchers across many fields and in classes relating to transnational histories of youth, education, nationalism, and modern Canada. Comacchio's work breaks new ground for North American childhood studies. She brings important new observations into the growing global conversation about the history of adolescence and the challenges of finding the voices, practices, and cultural realities of adolescence in the past.'' -- Don Romesburg, Sonama State University -- History of Education Quarterly, Volume 48, Number 3, August 2008, 200809``This book about the creation and social construction of adolescence in Canada will appeal to historians who are increasingly turning their attention to the second half of the 20th century, where youth experiences and youth culture surface as major themes. As Comacchio clearly demonstrates, the 1950s and 1960s did not mark the emergence of a youth culture in Canada because a separate youth culture predated that period by as much as 30 years. The Dominion of Youth clearly and convincingly establishes the fact and therefore it should become a standard reference on 20th-century you and popular culture.'' -- Linda M. Book SynopsisIn her decades of practice and academic research, Dr. Christa Santangelo, a psychologist and assistant clinical professor at the University of California-San Francisco, has seen many relationships devastated by the emotional hurricane that teenagers can inflict on a family. Yet Dr. Santangelo also understands how that conflict can be resolved and a new way forward mapped together between parents and teen. In A New Theory of Teenagers, she gives parents the advice, tips, support, and big-picture overview needed to see the teen years as an opportunities for growth and positive relationship changes. With counterintuitive steps (such as "Endure Emotions"), she offers hope and empowerment. Dr. Santangelo asserts that parents have a far greater impact on conflict with their teen than they may realize, metaphorically handing parents back the power to shift the situation to harmony. And, Dr. Santangelo does it with a fresh and multi-dimensional approach to the parent-teen relationship by integrating conventional psychology with alternative methods including yoga and meditation-intended to work on building trust, sitting with and understanding emotions, and seeing room for positivity in the midst of it all.
