  • Unlocking Creativity

John Wiley & Sons Inc Unlocking Creativity

Book SynopsisTear down the obstacles to creative innovation in your organization Unlocking Creativity is an exploration of the creative process and how organizations can clear the way for innovation. In many organizations, creative individuals face stubborn resistance to new ideas. Managers and executives oftentimes reject innovation and unconventional approaches due to misplaced allegiance to the status quo. Questioning established practices or challenging prevailing sentiments is frequently met with stiff resistance. In this climate of stifled creativity and inflexible adherence to conventional wisdom, potentially game-changing ideas are dismissed outright. Senior leaders claim to value creativity, yet often lack the knowledge to provide a creative framework. Unlocking Creativity offers effective methods and real-world examples of how the most successful organizations create cultures of innovation and experimentation. • Agile 2

John Wiley & Sons Inc Agile 2

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAgile is broken. Most Agile transformations struggle. According to an Allied Market Research study, 63% of respondents stated the failure of agile implementation in their organizations. The problems with Agile start at the top of most organizations with executive leadership not getting what agile is or even knowing the difference between success and failure in agile. Agile transformation is a journey, and most of that journey consists of people learning and trying new approaches in their own work. An agile organization can make use of coaches and training to improve their chances of success. But even then, failure remains because many Agile ideas are oversimplifications or interpreted in an extreme way, and many elements essential for success are missing. Coupled with other ideas that have been dogmatically forced on teams, such as agile team rooms, and an overall inertia and resistance to change in the Agile community, the Agile movement is ripe for change since its birth twenty years ago. Agile 2 represents the work of fifteen experienced Agile experts, distilled into Agile 2: The Next Iteration of Agile by seven members of the team. Agile 2 values these pairs of attributes when properly balanced: thoughtfulness and prescription; outcomes and outputs, individuals and teams; business and technical understanding; individual empowerment and good leadership; adaptability and planning. With a new set of Agile principles to take Agile forward over the next 20 years, Agile 2 is applicable beyond software and hardware to all parts of an agile organization including Agile HR, Agile Finance, and so on. Like the original Agile, Agile 2, is just a set of ideas - powerful ideas. To undertake any endeavor, a single set of ideas is not enough. But a single set of ideas can be a powerful guide.Table of ContentsAbout the Authors vii Acknowledgments xi Foreword xv Preface xix 1 How Did We Get Here? 1 2 Specific Problems 21 3 Leadership: The Core Issue 49 4 Ingredients That Are Needed 69 5 Kinds of Leadership Needed 121 6 What Effective Collaboration Looks Like 157 7 It’s All About the Product 181 8 Product Design and Agile 2 191 9 Moving Fast Requires Real-Time Risk Management 205 10 A Transformation is a Journey 245 11 DevOps and Agile 2 275 12 Agile 2 at Scale 299 13 System Engineering and Agile 2 335 14 Agile 2 in Service Domains 363 15 Conclusion 383 Index 391

Through these momentsduring which social movements have embraced advances in communications technologieshe illuminates the complicated, dangerous, innovative, and exciting relationship between these technologies, social movements, and social change. Brescia shows that, almost without fail, developments in how we communicate shape social movements, just as those movements change the very technologies themselves. From the printing press to the television, social movements have leveraged communications technologies to advance change. In this moment of rapidly evolving communications, it''s imperative to assess the role that the Internet, mobile devices, and social media can play in promoting social justice. • Purdue University Press Disaster Recovery Project Management: Bringing

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe scope of disasters ranges from man-made emergency to natural calamity, from a kitchen grease fire to a hurricane or volcanic eruption. It may be just one house that is destroyed, or perhaps a whole infrastructure system is threatened. While each type of event requires a very different scale and type of immediate response, the project management challenges that face restoration and reconstruction professionals after the emergency phase is complete are remarkably similar.Using insights acquired through decades of real-world experience, as well as from his academic research and teaching responsibilities, the author explains pertinent requirements and methods for the contractors and other professionals who bring order from chaos. The first section of the book surveys the managerial skills required to confront the range of disasters that might be encountered and the different project environments involved. The second section examines the details of recovery project management and administration, from materials management to health and safety. The third and final section provides an overview of restoration techniques, from restorative drying to debris management and demolition. This is the first systematic presentation of the tools and skills needed for disaster recovery project management. It is designed primarily for contractors (both large and small firms), although it will also be of value for those who might hire them, the communities they serve, and their organizational partners in the disaster recovery effort. Those who are new to disaster restoration and reconstruction will find the volume particularly useful. Focused on informing the management of projects that recover the built environment, after emergency conditions sufficiently stabilize, the volume supplements and complements books devoted to conventional construction or emergency relief management.

Thestories of the moon walkers are familiar. Less appreciated are Grissom'scontributions. The international prestige of winning the Moon Race cannotbe understated, and Grissom played a pivotal and enduring role in securing thatlegacy for the United States. Indeed, Grissom was first and foremost a ColdWarrior, a member of the first group of Mercury astronauts whose goal it was tobeat the Soviet Union into space and eventually to the moon.Drawing on extensive interviews with fellow astronauts, NASA engineers, family members, and friends of Gus Grissom, George Leopold deliversa comprehensive and corrective account of Grissom’s life that places his careerin the context of the Cold War and the history of human spaceflight.Calculated Risk: TheSupersonic Life and Times of Gus Grissom adds significantly to ourunderstanding of that tumultuous and ultimately triumphant period in American history.Table of Contents Preface Acknowledgments Introduction: Pure Oxygen 1. 1926 2. • Progress in Convergence: Technologies for Human

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Progress in Convergence: Technologies for Human

Book SynopsisContinued economic growth, human welfare, and national security depend upon constant technological progress; and the chief area for innovation in the coming years will be converging technologies, the synergistic combination of the "NBIC" fields: nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and new technologies based in cognitive science. The significance of convergence was initially recognized in the first National Science Foundation conference on the societal implications of nanotechnology in 2000, which reported that the newly developed ability to measure, manipulate, and organize matter on the nanoscale was revolutionizing science and technology. This volume will mark a major step forward, for three reasons: (1) Enough is understood about convergence now to permit serious consideration of governance issues and the likely human consequences. (2) Among the many convergence-related research projects, several in diverse areas have begun to deliver real results. (3) The network of NBIC researchers and analysts has developed to the point of being a real scientific and engineering community. One cross-cutting theme will be the ethical, legal, and social consequences of technological convergence. Another is the hunt for areas of remarkable research opportunities and the transforming tools required to take maximum advantage of them. Convergence will bring new approaches to what are currently diverse areas of research, such as converging technology platforms, physical and mental performance, human-machine interfaces, human cognition and communication, education and training, work efficiency, and many others. On their own, each of the NBIC technologies offers the potential for extraordinary advancement, but combined their potential is enormous and may provide revolutionary progress in human longevity, quality of life, learning, and productivity. • Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count?

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count?

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor many of us, the presidential election of 2000 was a wake-up call. The controversy following the vote count led to demands for election reform. But the new voting systems that were subsequently introduced to the market have serious security flaws, and many are confusing and difficult to use. Moreover, legislation has not kept up with the constantly evolving voting technology, leaving little to no legal recourse when votes are improperly counted. How did we come to acquire the complex technology we now depend on to count votes? Douglas W. Jones and Barbara Simons probe this question, along with public policy and regulatory issues raised by our voting technologies. "Broken Ballots" is a thorough and incisive analysis of the current voting climate and it approaches American elections from technological, legal, and historical perspectives. The authors examine the ways Americans vote today, gauging how inaccurate, unreliable, and insecure our voting systems are. An important book for election administrators, political scientists, and students of government and technology policy, "Broken Ballots" is also a vital tool for any voting American.

Book SynopsisBy any measure, Hans Mark was a warrior of the Cold War. Born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1929, he spent his early childhood in Vienna before escaping the Nazi Anschluss in 1938 and eventually emigrating to the United States, settling in New York. He graduated from high school in 1947, went west to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned a PhD in physics from MIT. His work in nuclear engineering soon set him on a path that would be shaped by aeronautics, space exploration, and national defense. It was through advanced technology that Mark believed the United States could win the Cold War. In An Anxious Peace, Mark recounts in detail his life as a twentieth-century ""rocket man."" Here is the inside story of one who—in a career spanning more than six decades—was on the technological front line, from long-range bombers to the space shuttle. Along the way, Mark reveals many never-before-told stories from life at NASA and more. Readers will revel in learning the background behind the decision to place a plaque on Pioneer 10, a space probe that the NASA Ames Research Center designed to fly past the asteroid belt, Jupiter, and Saturn to collect data and images. Mark tells how he, Carl Sagan, and NASA insider John Naugle kept secret the addition of the now iconic 6x9-inch aluminum ""message from humanity"" until the probe had been launched. To this day Mark is pushing for a manned mission to Mars. One thing is sure: Hans Mark has left a major impact on academic and scientific communities that will be felt for decades to come.

The people making decisions on AI projects are often not technologically savvy and unable to find easy answers. The spending on and the returns from AI projects are not necessarily straightforward. Part of the reason for this is the lack of understanding of the impact of critical decision criteria. AI touches on many ethical concepts - data privacy, validity, and, more importantly, its potential misuse. AI often replaces human decision-making, as managers do not clearly understand the implications of those choices. This book provides an easy and accessible guide for practitioners without a technological background to understand AI. It guides the reader through the fundamental issues confronting decision-makers. • Innovation in Clusters: Science-Industry

ISTE Ltd and John Wiley & Sons Inc Innovation in Clusters: Science-Industry

Book SynopsisForged at the heart of international political bodies by expert researchers, the innovation cluster concept has been incorporated into most public policies in industrialized countries. Based largely on the ideas behind the success of Silicon Valley, several imitative attempts have been made to geographically group laboratories, companies and training in particular fields in order to generate “synergies” between science and industry. In its first part, Innovation in Clusters analyzes the infatuation with the system of clusters that is integral to innovative policies by analyzing its socio historical context, its revival in management and its worldwide expansion, looking at a French example at a local level. In its second part, the book explores a specialized biotechnology cluster dating back to the end of the 1990s. The sociological survey conducted twenty years later sheds a different light on the dynamics and relationships between laboratories and companies, contradicting the commonly held belief that innovation is made possible by geographical proximity.Table of ContentsForeword ix Philippe BRUNET Introduction xiii Part 1 Persistence and Renewal of the Cluster Concept in Contemporary Innovation Policies 1 Chapter 1 From Industrial Districts to Knowledge Valleys: the Legacy of the Cluster 3 1.1 The industrial district: the oldest ancestor of the cluster 3 1.1.1 The economic approach of industrial atmosphere 3 1.1.2 The first Italian districts and their influence in France 5 1.1.3 The rise of districts: the end of the Fordist enterprise? 7 1.2 Spatial concentrations of technological activities 10 1.2.1 The time of technopoles: reconciling regional planning and innovation 10 1.2.2 A spontaneous and innovative environment conducive to a “technological atmosphere”? 13 1.2.3 The era of cognitive capitalism: the race for creativity of individuals and territories 15 1.3 The valleys of knowledge: interindividual relations as a source of innovation 17 1.3.1 Informal links in the heart of Silicon Valley 17 1.3.2 The relational logic essential to geographical proximity 19 1.3.3 Social capital as a driver of innovation 21 Chapter 2 The Management Roots of the Cluster and Its Worldwide Dissemination 25 2.1 An economic and management concept destined to become a public action mechanism 25 2.1.1 Porter’s cluster: the rapid spread of success stories 25 2.1.2 Knowledge management and its workers as a dominant paradigm 29 2.1.3 A theoretical and practical toolkit provided by researcher-experts in clustering 33 2.2 Global dissemination of good clustering practices 36 2.2.1 A paradigm born in the United States and forged at the heart of the OECD 36 2.2.2 To adopt OECD recommendations, or have them imposed? 38 2.2.3 The European Union, sponsor of the race to the knowledge economy 40 2.3 The French legislative framework from the 1980s to the 2010s: a favored coming together of science and industry 43 2.3.1 Researchers converted into entrepreneurs 44 2.3.2 The university: a link in the cluster supply chain 46 2.3.3 A cluster for every territory 49 Chapter 3 The Cluster Imaginary: Tools, Local Narrative and Promise 53 3.1 Performative instruments: benchmarking, territorial marketing, visual instrumentation 53 3.1.1 Benchmarking or territorial mimicry 54 3.1.2 Territorial marketing: asserting the cluster’s symbolic capital 55 3.1.3 Visual instrumentation: the image of a dense, expanding campus 57 3.2 The construction of a narrative 60 3.2.1 Evry, the French cradle of human genomics 60 3.2.2 Industrial renewal: the cluster as a solution to local economic development 62 3.2.3 The rhetoric of technological backwardness: overcoming French scientific slowness 63 3.3 Promises of innovation and employment at the territorial level 65 3.3.1 The promise of the biocluster: a sustainable environment and the medicine of the future 65 3.3.2 Becoming the capital of genobiomedicine, creating jobs for innovators 68 3.3.3 The naturalization of the cluster effect: an unquestionable concept? 71 Part 2 Prevented Synergies: the Case of a Biotechnology Cluster 75 Chapter 4 Networking Systems: Repeated but Hindered Initiatives 77 4.1 Scientific and industrial administration: establishing a recurrent event 77 4.1.1 The emergence of an intermediary figure: the cluster administrator 78 4.1.2 Networking and renewing acquaintances among cluster members through regular events 80 4.1.3 Fostering communities of practice: the creation of thematic bodies 83 4.2 Sharing a technology platform: mutualization or collaboration? 87 4.2.1 Resources as an intermediary: a policy of sharing expensive equipment 88 4.2.2 Platform usage: service provision before collaboration 91 4.2.3 Equipment demonstrations: connecting or making visible? 94 4.3 The institutionalization of conviviality: “la vie de site” 98 4.3.1 Bringing together and involving employees from different backgrounds 98 4.3.2 Building emotional and community connections through volunteering and sport 101 4.3.3 L’Escale, a space of sociability revealing professional hierarchies 103 Chapter 5 Scientific Competition and Economic Competition: Social Fields Spanned by Internal Struggles 107 5.1 Asynchronous organizations and work rhythms 107 5.1.1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Corporate Technological Competence and the

Book SynopsisDrawing upon evolutionary economics and resource-based approaches, the author utilises US patent data from 1930-1990 to examine the persistence of corporate technological competencies and their gradual erosion through diversifying incremental change. The book explores the changing nature of this diversification with respect to firm size, technological relatedness and technological complexity in 32 firms distributed across four broadly defined industrial sectors. The findings suggest that industry and corporate technological profiles remain strong but are becoming blurred by the pervasiveness of general-purpose technologies. Although historically, diversification is associated with an increase in firm size, the author argues that in recent times it results from technological relatedness and complexity. This book will appeal to industrial and business economists, historians of business and technology, and students and scholars of technology management.Trade Review'This book is an important contribution to the field. It provides us with a clear definition of diversification, presenting all the dimensions that can justify the evolution of firms' technological positioning, an interesting theoretical proposition and a deep empirical analysis to support the argumentation. . . without any doubt this book is worth reading to have a clear presentation of a fascinating area of research.' -- Ludovic Dibiaggio, Technovation'Scholars working in the realm of technical change and firm technological strategies should read this book. Here they will find an authoritative work (over the period it covers) and will note the care it takes in unravelling industry and firm history.' -- Lionel Nesta, Journal of Evolutionary Economics'One of the longest-running debates in studies of economic and industrial organization concerns the advantages of specialization versus the advantages of diversification. Confusion over the nature of "diversification" has clouded this debate. By a long-term analysis of technological behaviour in large firms, Felicia Fai is able to bring fresh theoretical and empirical insights to this key question. Book SynopsisThe interplay between demand from the market, the role of users in shaping that demand, and the way in which these factors influence the innovation process has always been a complex one. This forward thinking book examines this interplay from a technological change perspective. The contributors explore the potential for rapprochement between economics, sociological and other social science disciplines in considering the allocation of resources and the making of decisions about technological change. The papers within this book represent a judicious blend of theory and empirical research and look at a broad range of innovations, markets and technologies in medicine, agricultural and food production, services and IT. Technology and the Market raises the question of the many 'visible hands' that are involved in linking technology and the market together. This book is recommended to academics and policymakers interested in demand-innovation interaction, scholars of industrial economics and the sociology of technology as well as entrepreneurs.Understanding user needs is now seen as one of the most important factors in the success of innovation and one of the raisons d'être of market research. This book attempts to move the boundaries to show the importance of how demand is detected or constructed by innovators.Table of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Introduction 2. Many Visible Hands 3. • Technology Transfer and International Production:

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Technology Transfer and International Production:

Book SynopsisKorea has been at the centre of intense debate concerning the role of government in economic development. Taking an in-depth approach, this book analyses the path of Korea's industrial technology development. In contrast to many previous studies on Korea, the author argues that the role of foreign multinational enterprises has been significant while the government's was surprisingly limited in scope. The author addresses three main questions: How was Korea able to develop so effectively despite the low inflow of foreign technologies and capital? What is the role of multinational enterprises in 'teaching' technology to the firms from developing countries? What has been the influence of public policy on Korea's technology development? The author demonstrates that the key to the Korean electronics industry's spectacular growth has been through its participation in and learning from an inter-firm arrangement called 'original equipment manufacturing' (OEM) arrangement, and a number of firm-level case studies support this argument. This book will be of special interest to scholars of industrial and development economics, innovation and Asian studies. It will also be of use to policymakers responsible for industrial policy development.Trade Review'An erudite study of a dynamic issue, Technology Transfer and International Production is recommended for students of the Korean electronic industry and technological innovations.' -- The Midwest Book Review'This is the first book to comprehensively examine how OEM [Original Equipment Manufacturing] works in a major industrialising nation (South Korea). OEM is the main mechanism by which Korea and other East Asian countries entered markets and gained technology. It's remarkable that so few scholars, students and researchers have noticed this. At last, through detailed case analysis, we have an authoritative account on how OEM works, what the pitfalls are, how they can be avoided, and the limitations of government policy. This is essential reading for those concerned with contemporary economic development.' -- Mike Hobday, SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, University of Sussex, UKTable of ContentsContents: Foreword by Sanjaya Lall Preface 1. • The Economics of Power, Knowledge and Time

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Economics of Power, Knowledge and Time

Book SynopsisThis book examines the significance of technological, organisational and institutional change as crucial factors in the analysis of the turnover time of capital. It also studies the related set of theoretical questions that concern the relationship between power, knowledge and time, in the context of capital accumulation and distribution.Michele Javary presents a creative and novel analysis of the ways in which these relationships can be analysed both conceptually and historically. She explores current issues relating to the dynamics of technical change, innovation, learning and institutional change by reviving and re-exploring one of the most penetrating contributions to economic thought: Marx's Capital. The author also combines historical and comparative perspectives to analyse the interplay between technology and organisations, based on the analysis of political governance in the United Kingdom and the rapid shift from coal to gas technologies at the time of the privatisation of the electricity supply industry. The analysis presented in the book elucidates many of the debates surrounding the economics of technological change and offers important new insights into both evolutionary and institutional economics. Students and scholars of industrial dynamics and technological change will find great value in the innovative analysis of the social and political factors that impact upon the selection, implementation and deployment of a new technology. Political economists and political scientists wishing to explore the significance of technology, organisations and institutions for capital accumulation and distribution will also be rewarded by this challenging book.Trade Review'Michele Javary takes on a major challenge in this book - the systematic analysis of the micro-foundations of capital and technological innovation in a way that takes into account the dynamics of the relationships between knowledge and time, power and knowledge, and power and time. Javary treats capital as a socio-economic phenomenon; one that is intimately linked to knowledge and to the scope of the options available for future economic development. She highlights the essential role of money-capital circulation time in forging the character of socio-economic institutions and their consequences for the selection of new technologies and for labour. Technological change in the electricity industry in the United Kingdom provides the historical material for a very insightful reinterpretation of the insights of Commons, Marx, Veblen, and others and of the implications of market liberalization. This book offers a new and much-needed understanding of the political-economy of technological change in modern times. This book should be required reading for all those with an interest in technological change, the management of innovation, and the organisation of the economy.' -- Robin Mansell, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK'This is a remarkable and highly original book. Not since Shackle has anyone made such an interesting study of the role of time in economics, and not since Marx has anyone tackled the question of the turnover time of capital in the context of political power, and the role of knowledge in relation to that power. Many books in economics are marginal in both senses of the word - they are in the marginalist neo-classical tradition, and they add little to the body of knowledge. This book is not marginal in either sense: it tackles some of the most fundamental questions in economic theory and it adds a great deal to our knowledge about them.' -- From the foreword by Christopher Freeman, SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research, University of Sussex, UK and Maastricht University, The NetherlandsTable of ContentsContents: Foreword 1. Book SynopsisThe environmental imperative exerts strong pressure on polluting industries in the industrialised countries. Environmentally-friendly technologies are available but often at prohibitive costs. Using evidence from the copper industry, this book addresses the question of how polluting industries in developing and transition economies have responded to this challenge. Technological Change and the Environmental Imperative considers the extent of the success of polluting industries in becoming cost-efficient whilst acquiring less polluting technologies, in the face of fierce competition. The authors also discuss what has been the impact of privatisation on this process and what lessons have been learnt. Against this backdrop, and drawing on case material from Chile, China, Peru and Russia, the book goes on to assess the latest technological breakthroughs, and their possible future impact on cost efficiency and the environment.International organisations, policymakers and industry analysts concerned with environmental issues will find this book of great fascination as will academics and researchers in the fields of development studies, transition economies and environmental studies.Trade Review'I am confident that the book will be valuable to a broad range of readers - including those in public policy, in industry, and academics - interested in environmental studies, technological change, technology transfer, development economics and industrial economics.' -- John T.
