Icon Books Taking Stock: A Journey Among Cows
Book Synopsis'Funny, insightful and hugely informative ... a charming book' DAILY MAIL'Tremendous ... We all need to take stock, and this is the ideal starting point. I learnt a lot from this book and laughed a lot too.' ROSAMUND YOUNG, author of The Secret Life of CowsSince highland cattle ransacked his grandmother's vegetable patch when he was six, Roger Morgan-Grenville has been fascinated by cows.So at the age of 61, with no farming experience, he signed on as a part- time labourer on a beef cattle farm to tell their side of the story. The result is this lyrical and evocative book. For 10,000 years, cow and human lives have been intertwined. Cattle have existed alongside us, fed and shod us, quenched our thirst, and provided a thousand other tiny services, and yet most of us know little about them. We are also blissfully unaware of the de-natured lives we often ask them to lead.Part history, part adventure and part unsentimental manifesto for how we should treat cows in the 21st century, Taking Stock asks us to think carefully about what we eat, and to let nature back into food production.Trade ReviewFunny, insightful and hugely informative ... a charming book * Daily Mail *Tremendous ... Penguin Books Ltd The Idea Factory
Book SynopsisFrom its beginnings in the 1920s until its demise in the 1980s, Bell Labs-officially, the research and development wing of AT&T-was the biggest, and arguably the best, laboratory for new ideas in the world. From the transistor to the laser, from digital communications to cellular telephony, it''s hard to find an aspect of modern life that hasn''t been touched by Bell Labs.In The Idea Factory, Jon Gertner traces the origins of some of the twentieth century''s most important inventions and delivers a riveting and heretofore untold chapter of American history. At its heart this is a story about the life and work of a small group of brilliant and eccentric men-Mervin Kelly, Bill Shockley, Claude Shannon, John Pierce, and Bill Baker-who spent their careers at Bell Labs.Today, when the drive to invent has become a mantra, Bell Labs offers us a way to enrich our understanding of the challenges and solutions to technological innovation. Here, after all, was where the foundational ideas on the management of innovation were born.Trade Review“Filled with colorful characters and inspiring lessons . . . The Idea Factory explores one of the most critical issues of our time: What causes innovation?” —Walter Isaacson, The New York Times Book Review“Riveting . . . Mr. Gertner’s portraits of Kelly and the cadre of talented scientists who worked at Bell Labs are animated by a journalistic ability to make their discoveries and inventions utterly comprehensible—indeed, thrilling—to the lay reader. And they showcase, too, his novelistic sense of character and intuitive understanding of the odd ways in which clashing or compatible personalities can combine to foster intensely creative collaborations.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times“One of the best innovation-focused books I've read: It's a wide-ranging, detailed, and deeply fascinating look at the New Jersey lab which has been churning out useful discoveries since the early 1900s.” —The Boston Globe“Fascinating history . . . the research behind The Idea Factory is astonishing.” —Slate Book Review“Compelling . . . Gertner's book offers fascinating evidence for those seeking to understand how a society should best invest its research resources.” —The Wall Street Journal“An expansive new history . . . does an impressive job of illuminating many of Bell Labs’ key technological triumphs.” —Wired.com

Floris Books Biodynamic, Organic and Natural Winemaking:
Book Synopsis"We constantly notice when we are out talking to winemakers in different wine regions that more and more producers pay attention to how what they do in the vineyard affects the environment. Many winemakers that we meet start the process of 'converting' to organic farming. There are rules for what that means -- what an organic farmer can do and what is forbidden -- rules that come both from public or government organisations and from private organisations. In addition, people also talk more and more about other related approaches: biodynamic winemaking, natural wines, sustainable farming. In this book we explain them all."Organic farming, biodynamic wine, natural wines, sustainable winemaking: what do all these concepts really mean, and what benefits can they bring to winemakers? This comprehensive book by two renowned wine experts explains the rules, the do's and don't's of organic, biodynamic and natural wine production, both outside in the vineyard and in the wine cellar. It sets out clearly what a winemaker is allowed to do, including processes, additives and chemicals, and looks at the potential long-term benefits of going organic or biodynamic. This is an invaluable introduction to sustainable winemaking for all wine professionals and enthusiasts.Winner of the 'Best Wine Book for Professionals 2012' in Sweden and the 'World's Best Drinks (wine) Education Book', runner-up, 2012.Trade Review'Perfect for people who want to learn about organic and biodynamic wines, and their ultra-orthodox relatives, natural wines... I really enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to every wine lover who wants to understand what is going on in the vineyard.'-- Robert Anding, Wine-Searcher'Full of quite absorbing detail that made it interesting for me to dip in and out of as chapters caught my attention... fascinating chapters like a really detailed glossary of what additives are allowed in wine, or natural means of controlling vineyard pests, make for really interesting reading for both winemakers and wine lovers alike.'-- Tom Cannavan, Wine-Pages.com'This is a sound overview of the arguments for and against biodynamic, organic and natural winemaking... compiled into a glossy presentation with plenty of relevant photography.'-- Paul O'Doherty, JancisRobinson.com'As environmental issues and sustainability becomes increasingly a concern for the consumer this books gives the reader the facts about all these wine growing and winemaking trends, methods and labels... In contrast to many other books on this subject the authors do not try to convince the reader these methods are the salvation for viticulture. Instead, the authors explain the background and the facts and go through the rules and regulations for what organic wine is so that the reader, the wine consumer, then can make informed personal choices.'-- Wijn Wijs'An eminent book on organic viticulture and winemaking.'--Vinkompassen'The book is clearly written and organized and lavishly illustrated with color photos that are both beautiful and informative. I learned something new in every chapter, but I was especially interested in the biodynamics section. The combination of thorough research and personal interviews with growers and winemakers made this material come alive for me... This is a fine book and worth your attention.'-- Mike Veseth, The Wine Economist'This well illustrated book about different styles of wines is timely, as millions of environmentally responsible consumers are starting to look for products les manipulated during production -- be it wine or food, or anything consumable... This is definitely a very valuable book for every wine enthusiast, regular wine drinker and winemakers. Highly recommended.'-- Hrayr Berberoglu, Winesworld's magazine'In short, there has not previously been such a thorough and clearly written book on this subject. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get an understanding of organic and sustainable wine production and what the steps are in that direction.'--John Bindels, chief editor national website for wine consumers Wijnwijs.eu

Crecy Publishing abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume
Book SynopsisA popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our facsimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The volume selected for reissue this Spring is abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959. This is in effect two books in one, abc British Railways Locomotives and the Locoshed Book. The abc lists all the locomotives which were in service at that time and the Locoshed book shows where those engines were allocated at the time the listings were compiled. The year covered in this volume is a particularly interesting one. By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. As with all of these facsimile reprints, this volume provides a wonderful, nostalgic snapshot of a railway scene which has long since disappeared and will be enjoyed by enthusiasts of both steam and modern traction.

Book SynopsisThe author is a somewhat frustrated ‘weekend engineer’ with a small lathe and an old manual milling machine in his garage, whose day job doesn’t reflect his passion for making mechanical things. A chance discussion with a colleague culminated in him ordering a brand-new CNC (Computerised Numerical Control) mill from the USA. The machine is a Tormach® 770MX, a model aimed unashamedly at the high end of the hobbyist market, and certainly attracting the attention of small independent manufacturing ‘start-ups’, particularly in the United States. This book records his journey of getting to grips with assembling all the components and learning how to operate the machine. It is purposely not an instruction manual – the manufacturer has already seen to that need. It is more a chronological log of all processes from choosing the right machine through to getting it to make parts. Taking the not insignificant leap from manual machining to CNC manufacturing, in the domestic environment, is a steep learning curve and this book is intended to assist, with many top tips gleaned from ‘learning the hard way’, shared throughout. There are other excellent books out there, some mainly theoretical references, some siding with historical interest. The author envisaged a need for something more practical and hands-on. When he began his project, he couldn’t find a book like this.

Island Press Holistic Management: A Commonsense Revolution to
Book SynopsisFossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem, it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels with environmentally benign energy sources. Holistic management is a systems-thinking approach for managing resources developed by Savory decades ago after observing the devastation of desertification in his native Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Properly managed livestock are key to restoring the world's grassland soils, the major sink for atmospheric carbon, and minimizing the most damaging impacts on humans and the natural world. This book updates Savory's paradigm-changing vision for reversing desertification, stemming the loss of biodiversity, eliminating fundamental causes 'of' human impoverishment throughout the world, and climate change. Reorganised chapters make it easier for readers to understand the framework for Holistic Management and the four key insights that underlie it. New colour photographs Showcase before-and-after examples of land restored by livestock. This long-anticipated new edition is written for new generations of farmers, eco- and social entrepreneurs, and development professionals working to address global environmental and social degradation. It offers new hope that a sustainable future for humankind and the world we depend on is within reach.
