A welcome reprint in paperback of BRM insider, Dick Salmon's no-nonsense view of exactly what it was like being a member of a works racing team in Formula One racing in the 1950s to the 1970s. Dick became accustomed to travelling around with the team, culminating in its World Championship double victory in 1962 with Graham Hill as number one driver and BRM as top constructor. Dick tells of the team's ups and downs, the everyday events and the special moments in a very readable manner. The forward was written by Graham Hill's wife, Bette, who died in December 2017. - Classic Car Weekly. There is much in here about racing, but plenty too about life on a road that was far less straightforward than is has since become. The engaging prose is accompanied by a diverse photo archive, covering action, people, technical details and the need to crane team trucks onto boat decks because that was the most practical way to reach Casablanca. It's a glorious reflection of an age when travelling meant something more adventurous than scanning a boarding pass in your smartphone. - Motor Sport. 'Setting up a home car workshop' is a detailed look at the whole subject that includes choosing the right basic hand tools. It's not simply theory because the author, Julian Edgar, has designed and built enough of them so there's good hands on experience here and well worth the asking price. - Classic Motoring. Here's a good book and another winner from Veloce Publishing. Book SynopsisTrade Review"I want to emphasize that this book is not just for Galápagos giant tortoise enthusiasts. It also highlights the many lessons that have been learned from restoration of Galápagos ecosystems. I teach an undergraduate course on conservation biology and always include a discussion of “ecological substitutes as a means or restoring lost ecological functions. The comprehensive list of tortoise rewilding efforts around the globe (Chapter 2) will definitely be incorporated into my discussion of this topic the next time I give the course. My course similarly includes a unit on eradication of invasive species, and the eradications successfully completed in the Galápagos (Chapter 19) are certainly a guide for future eradication attempts around the globe. I was particularly interested in the rat eradication carried out on Pinzón Island (Chapter 22) and the immediate benefits detected for not only Galápagos giant tortoises, but also land snails, lava lizards, Galápagos snakes, cactus finches, and Galápagos rails. This leads to my final point about the book’s inspiring accounts of individual tortoises. Although we are all aware of the incredible longevity of giant tortoises, the stories in this volume brought it home to me in a way I had not experienced before. I was particularly moved by the story of Diego (Chapter 21), the Española giant tortoise who was collected from his home island in 1934, spent 43 years at the San Diego Zoo, was then transferred to the Tortoise Breeding Center to participate in the captive breeding program for another 43 years, before being returned to his home island in 2020. It is incredible to think of any living organism having witnessed so much change, but the authors of this volume calculate that 2% of Galápagos giant tortoises alive today would have been present when Darwin visited the islands in 1834. It is only due to their extreme longevity that the tortoises were able to persist through centuries of human exploitation and invasive species (e.g., there was no natural tortoise recruitment on Pinzón for over a century). The overall text is based on the M.Sc. course “Clean Chemical Technology” at York University; its success can be judged from the fact that this is the third edition. The author suggests that it may be of interest to research and industrial chemists, engineers, and managers wishing to learn more about green chemistry—again, a very modest statement when virtually every aspect of chemistry can utilise most of the principles outlined. The whole is based on the concepts, as described in 12 principles, first outlined in “Green Chemistry Theory and Practice”, and published in 1998. Most importantly, the modern business term TBL (Triple Bottom Line) has also been incorporated, where the three strands of social, environmental, and financial accountability are interlinked to provide a long term means of sustainability, so much so that major companies now include the concept and its meaning into their annual reports. However, as with most good intentions, once Public Relations departments get to work, the approach can become somewhat mangled and the real significance diluted. Fortunately, some companies have evolved specialist teams that have now become the driving force for change, minimising waste, energy use, and environmental impact. The division of the subject matter into ten chapters allows readers to switch easily between subject areas. These deal with waste (production problems and prevention), environmental performance (measurement and control), catalysis, organic solvents, renewables (biomass, energy, alternative economies, and biorefining), emerging green technologies and the design of greener processes, finalising with examples of specific industrial case studies, and future predictions. Perhaps, more emphasis could have been placed on Syngas economy, more specifically gasoline products, which is very well developed, and set for a resurgence as fracked gas, already available at massively reduced cost in the US, becomes global. Recent UK acts aimed at reducing environmental pollution [Industrial Emissions Directive, Air and Water Acts, and Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH), and others] are dwarfed by the four laws on CO2 emissions passed into law from 2010 onwards in the UK. These badly thought-out laws have massively impacted, and massively distorted, the UK’s energy market to such an extent that both industrial and domestic user’s costs are substantial higher than those found in competitive countries, compounded by being largely hidden from users by a raft of hard-to-locate subsidies. The author was indeed being modest in his claims.
