  • Artful Noise

University of Illinois Press Artful Noise

Book SynopsisTwentieth-century composers created thousands of original works for solo percussion and percussion ensemble. Concise and ideal for the classroom, Artful Noise offers an essential and much-needed survey of this unique literature. Percussionist Thomas Siwe organizes and analyzes the groundbreaking musical literature that arose during the twentieth century. Focusing on innovations in style and the evolution of the percussion ensemble, Siwe offers a historical overview that connects the music to scoring techniques, new instrumentation and evolving technologies as well as world events. Discussions of representative pieces by seminal composers examines the resources a work requires, its construction, and how it relates to other styles that developed during the same period. In addition, Siwe details the form and purpose of many of the compositions while providing background information on noteworthy artists. Each chapter is supported with musical examples and concludes with a sTrade Review"The author's perspective as a student, and later pedagogue, of the percussion program pioneered at the University of Illinois lends the work a humble authority that ultimately makes for a compelling account of recent percussion history." --Music Educators Journal"Recommended." --Choice”This book makes it possible for everyone to benefit from Professor Siwe's decades of research concerning the history of percussion in the twentieth-century and the music composed by many of that century’s most important composers. Percussion music holds a special place in the twentieth century, and its story is told here by one of the twentieth century's most knowledgeable percussion practitioners and pedagogues. Thomas Siwe has written an indispensable book, drawn from a lifetime of experience and research. Everyone interested in the essential role percussion played the last century should read this book!”—Christopher Shultis, author of Silencing the Sounded Self: John Cage and the American Experimental Tradition”Simply stated, this is a singular contribution detailing the history of percussion literature in the twentieth century made by one of the most knowledgeable percussion educators who was witness to many of the composers and compositions he discusses.”—Kathleen Kastner, Wheaton College Conservatory of Music

Indiana University Press Famous Pianists and Their Technique New Edition

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA fascinating look at the technique of world-renowned pianists from the last two centuriesTrade Review. . . [a] classic study of keyboard technique . . . . -- Patricia Stroh * Beethoven Journal *This book was eye-opening when the first edition . . . appeared, and it remains so today. . . . The new edition is somewhat enhanced with the addition of a short foreword by Alan Walker and a number of appendixes that refer the reader to specific discussion areas such as 'the aesthetic imperative, mental and psychological control, isolated movements, coordinated movements, posture,' and so on. . . . Recommended. . . . * Choice *. . . the expanded part of Gerig's book [is] so impressive that this section by itself is worth more than the price of the book. Just one of the cross-referenced ideas would be enough to spur a thesis, dissertation, or lecture-recital. . . . Scholars will not be disappointed at the array of obscure facts and hard-to-locate bibliography. Pedagogues will relish this text as an indispensable reference for their courses and daily work. Pianists will be able to constantly refer and return to their historical heritage. Gerig's book has not only withstood the test of time, but will continue to do so. * Piano Journal *For both amateurs and professionals, Professor Gerig's book is entertaining and informative reading. Serious students of the instrument should place a high priority on owning this revision and reading it from cover to cover. From Mr. Gerig's enlightening narrative we learn as much about the lives of legendary pianists and pedagogues, their performing, and their teaching as we do about piano technique. Lastly, the paperback cover keeps the cost of the volume reasonable.Vol.25.1 Winter/Spring 2009 -- Reid Alexander * University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign *Called 'the bible of piano technique' by Maurice Hinson, this book is a comprehnsive resource for the student, teacher and professional pianist. • Expanding Tonal Awareness: A Musical Exploration

Rudolf Steiner Press Expanding Tonal Awareness: A Musical Exploration

Book SynopsisHeiner Ruland charts a practical path towards a deepened musical understanding, illuminating the panorama of humanity's musical past. Indicating what may happen - and needs to happen - to music in the immediate and more distant future, the implications of this book for composition, musical education and therapy are immense. The author shows how the fundamental elements of music embody distinctive modes of consciousness. He examines the musical systems of ancient humanity and goes on to draw a vivid picture of our contemporary musical situation. This seminal work is more than a theoretical treatise on the nature of music, but a book to be understood and experienced through musical practice. With the help of the monochord, the reader, with a minimum of technique, is able to explore new and unfamiliar musical realms. 'Rudolf Steiner believed that an expansion of our tone-system was a necessity...In this book of Ruland's, we have for the first time an account that is penetrating enough and of sufficiently large scope to enable us to understand why.' - Jurgen Schriefer

When I think of how many years, master teachers, serendipitous or just fortuitous moments of realization and connection between body and soul, how many once-in-a-lifetime revelations I have accumulated and, NOW, to find it all in one book! I am stunned, amazed, and forever grateful. * Richard Stoltzman, Grammy Award-Winning Clarinetist *From the Stage to the Studio succeeds well beyond its mission of being a helpful resource for teaching performers. This book is a thoughtful examination of the process of musical learning, self-teaching, and the communication and sharing of musical knowledge between teacher and student. It is highly recommended. * Scott Belck, D.M.A., Director of Jazz Studies, Professor of Music, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music *In a world in which instrumental teachers can have a very hit-and-miss experience as they feel their way into the profession, this book is like a torch beam, highlighting the path to a world of generative and creative instrumental teaching. It is the kind that learners and teachers will alike find affirming, and will enjoy, and one that considers both as whole human beings with histories, preferences, failings and foibles, looking to enjoy together a lifetime in music. * Philippa Bunting, The Strad *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Foreword by Stephen Clapp Preface PART I | THE PERFORMING MUSICIAN Introduction When Your Calling in Life Is to Perform, Why Learn to Teach? 1 Musicality 2 Listening 3 Technique 4 Practicing 5 Performing PART II | THE ART OF TEACHING 6 Teaching Principles 7 Sequencing 8 Fostering Student Independence 9 Comprehensive Teaching 10 Your Teaching Philosophy PART III | THE MUSICIAN AS A TEACHING PROFESSIONAL 11 Establishing a Teaching Studio 12 Groups, Ensembles, Classrooms, and Other Teaching Situations 13 Quandaries and Options 14 The Cyclical and Reciprocal Nature of Teaching and Learning Conclusion Appendixes Index
