Similarly, the principles set out in previous books still apply: the importance of realizing the overall style, rhythm and tempo of a piece before you begin to play; the awareness of keys, chord and interval shapes, and overall melodic shape; and the need for a quick visual summary of repeat signs and changes in time an overview of the general "geography" of the piece.

  • Intervals, Scales, Tones: And the Concert Pitch c

Temple Lodge Publishing Intervals, Scales, Tones: And the Concert Pitch c

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy is it that certain intervals, scales and tones sound genuine and others false? Is the modern person able to experience a qualitative difference in a tone's pitch? If so, what are the implications for modern concert pitch and how instruments of fixed tuning are tuned? Maria Renold tackles these and many other questions, providing a wealth of scientific data. Her pioneering work is the result of a lifetime's research into Western music's Classical Greek origins, as well as a search for new developments in modern times. She strives to deepen musical understanding through Rudolf Steiner's spiritual-scientific research, and she also elucidates many of Steiner's often puzzling statements about music. The results of her work include the following discoveries: that the octave has two sizes (a 'genuine' sounding octave is bigger than the 'perfect' octave); that there are three sizes of 'perfect' fifths; that an underlying 'form principle' for all scales can be found; and, most importantly, the discovery of a method of tuning the piano which is more satisfactory than equal temperament. She also gives foundation to some of Rudolf Steiner's statements such as: 'c is always prime' and 'c = 128 Hz = Sun'.

  • The Joy of Playing the Joy of Thinking

Harvard University Press The Joy of Playing the Joy of Thinking

Book SynopsisThe Joy of Playing, the Joy of Thinking brings together two sensitive minds in an exhilarating conversation on the arts. Charles Rosen, concert pianist and pioneering musicologist, and writer Catherine Temerson range widely—from musical aesthetics to tales of the great composers, the development of modernism, and the need to play.Trade ReviewHere one really finds oneself in Rosen’s presence, as he starts to spin a line of thought as elegant as any Bellini cantilena. -- Simon Callow * New York Review of Books *Rosen shares absorbing anecdotes relating to his studies with Moriz Rosenthal, who had been a student of Liszt, and the time that he inadvertently offended Stravinsky by asking about an assumed printer’s error in a score…It is just the thing for those missing the camaraderie of post-concert chat. -- Claire Jackson * BBC Music Magazine *Charles Rosen was a rarity among musicians; he excelled equally at the highest levels of performance and scholarship. This book presents the best kind of intellectual conversation: elevated, wide-ranging, impossible to predict, and sometimes very funny indeed. You’ll wish you could have joined in. -- Tim Page, Professor at the Annenberg School of Journalism and Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California, and winner of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for CriticismI devoured this scintillating little book with pleasure. What I most appreciate is Charles Rosen’s keen awareness of history—not just of music, but of concurrent literature and visual art. His capacity and readiness to apply the past to understandings of the present is a gift increasingly rare today. -- Joseph Horowitz, author of Classical Music in America and Conversations with ArrauFew could produce such lucid formulations as Charles Rosen, especially in the course of dialogue. A spellbinding conversationalist, he exemplifies the well-rounded humanist no longer common in public discourse. His colleague Catherine Temerson asks carefully crafted questions. No one else could have created this exquisite book. -- Susan McClary, author of Feminine Endings: Music, Gender, and Sexuality and Conventional Wisdom: The Content of Musical FormA surprising treasure. Catherine Temerson’s perceptive questions reveal new insights from Charles Rosen. One comes away from reading the book with the same sense of intellectual excitement and energy that defined an evening’s conversation with the master pianist himself. -- Jeffrey Kallberg, author of Chopin at the Boundaries: Sex, History, and Musical Genre

Book SynopsisWritten especially for the older beginner, Pianoworks 1 explains all you need to know to get you started on the piano. It focuses on the traditional concept of learning to play from music but also includes hints on improvisation and playing by ear. At every stage there is an appealing and accessible range of pieces to play, from classical to modern in style, including a number of new pieces by the authors. New ideas are introduced at a steady pace, and examples and exercises reinforce learning and build confidence. There are useful notes on how to approach each piece, and the companion website contains recordings of all the pieces, accompaniments to play along with, demonstrations, and additional exercises. Pianoworks 1 can be used with a teacher or as a stand-alone resource.Trade ReviewPianoworks is popular with students due to its clear, detailed explanation, logical progression, great (and grown-up) music choices, and excellent supplementary books . . . Pianoworks offers a fast, no-nonsense approach to piano playing, with an emphasis on independent learning and solid notation reading . . . The quality of the music included in the Pianoworks series is undoubtedly one of the highlights that sets it apart from the alternatives. Alan Bullard is well-known as one of our top educational composers and arrangers; the calibre of his writing is fully on display here, while the contributions of Janet Bullard stand shoulder-to-shoulder in terms of their equally impressive quality . . . My adult students regularly comment on how much they enjoy playing these outstanding arrangements and pieces, which is of course SO important! * pianodao.com, January 2019 *. . . a fine package designed to stimulate and train beginners from the age of about 13 upwards. It incorporates all sorts of music and is presented in an attractive, unpatronising and adult manner. The Bullards have exemplary credentials and I admire the way they have gone about this difficult task. * John York, Piano Sept 2007 *Many, many thanks and congratulations on a superb publication - I`m thrilled to bits with it. * A piano teacher *I have been looking for a good tutor for some time. This fits the bill and is excellent. I have been using a variety of adult books and none have been satisfactory. * A piano teacher *Book 2 is in preparation and will certainly bring the student to an even higher level of performance if the present collection's interesting and challenging content is maintained. * Piano Professional, Summer 08 *Table of ContentsYour piano ; Starting to play ; Musical notation ; Hands together ; Beyond the five-finger position ; Scales, tones, and semitones ; More techniques and signs ; Compound time ; Index

Book SynopsisElectronic music evokes new sensations, feelings, and thoughts in both composers and listeners. Composing Electronic Music outlines a new theory based on the powerful toolkit of electronic music techniques.Trade Reviewa worthwhile addition to electronic music literature. * Richard Barrett, Journal of Sonic Studies *What a pleasure to read a book which explains to us all the foundations of electronic music ... [which] has been opening a new full area on the history of music, and putting a clear separation between the area of "acoustic" music, and the area of "electronic" music. * Jean-Claude Eloy *Clearly formulated starting points engage the reader in more challenging concepts and interesting lines of enquiry, contextualising the many perspectives surrounding each topic. This well researched treasure chest of quotes, references, and examples illustrates an insightful text which the author, himself with decades of experience as a transcontinental practitioner, has enriched with personal reflections that in turn allow the reader to do the same. * Natasha Barrett *Curtis Roads' book is a kind of prism that reevaluates the field of music composition in the light of the new technologies of the 21st century. He builds a thousand bridges between different approaches to attributes like pitch, rhythm, time scales, and even sonic narratives in order to help us to understand present music practices. * Horacio Vaggione, composer, Professor Emeritus, the University of Paris VIII *A rich and enjoyable survey for the computer musician, ranging from the objects of compositional manipulation to the performative aspects of the shaping of sensory experience. This book will be of interest not only to the electronic music composer, but also to the performing musician, and the general reader interested in the process and principles of musical design. * Elaine Chew, Professor of Digital Media, Queen Mary University of London *Table of Contents00 Preface ; 01 The electronic medium ; 02 Aesthetic foundations ; 03 The nature of sound ; 04 Creating sound materials ; 05 Sound transformation ; 06 Processes of rhythm ; 07 Pitch in electronic music ; 08 Articulating space ; 09 Multiscale organization ; 10 Sonic narrative ; 11 Generative strategies ; 12 The art of mixing ; 13 References ; Appendix A List of sound examples ; Index
