  • Springer London Ltd Engineering Design: A Systematic Approach

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis proven and internationally recognized text teaches the methods of engineering design as a condition of successful product development. It breaks down the design process into phases and then into distinct steps, each with its own working methods. The book provides more examples of product development; it also tightens the scientific bases of its design ideas with new solution fields in composite components, building methods, mechatronics and adaptronics. The economics of design and development are covered and electronic design process technology integrated into its methods. The book is sharply written and well-illustrated.Trade Review"Engineering Design is widely acknowledged to be the most complete available treatise on systematic design methods. In it, each step of the engineering design process and associated best practices are documented. The book has particularly strong sections on design from the functional perspective and on the phase of the process between conceptual and detail design in which most key design decisions are made. The 3rd edition includes new material on project planning and scheduling. Anyone committed to understanding the design process should be familiar with the contents of this book." Warren Seering, Weber-Shaughness Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology On the second edition of this title: "With a renewed interest in the critical role product design plays in maintaining economic competitiveness, American designers would be well advised to become thoroughly acquainted with this wealth of information." 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis text addresses the modeling of vibrating systems with the perspective of finding the model of minimum complexity which accounts for the physics of the phenomena at play. The first half of the book (Ch.1-6) deals with the dynamics of discrete and continuous mechanical systems; the classical approach emphasizes the use of Lagrange's equations. The second half of the book (Ch.7-12) deals with more advanced topics, rarely encountered in the existing literature: seismic excitation, random vibration (including fatigue), rotor dynamics, vibration isolation and dynamic vibration absorbers; the final chapter is an introduction to active control of vibrations. The first part of this text may be used as a one semester course for 3rd year students in Mechanical, Aerospace or Civil Engineering. The second part of the text is intended for graduate classes. A set of problems is provided at the end of every chapter. The author has a 35 years experience in various aspects of Structural dynamics, both in industry (nuclear and aerospace) and in academia; he was one of the pioneers in the field of active structures. He is the author of several books on random vibration, active structures and structural control.Table of ContentsPreface1 Single degree-of-freedom linear oscillator2 Multiple degree-of-freedom systems3 Lagrangian dynamics4 Continuous systems5 Rayleigh-Ritz method6 Finite elements7 Seismic excitation8 Random vibration9 Peak factor & random fatigue10 Rotor dynamics11 Vibration alleviation|12 Introduction to active vibration controlReferencesIndex

  • Springer Probabilistic Methods for Structural Design

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book contains contributions from various authors on different important topics related with probabilistic methods used for the design of structures. Initially several of the papers were prepared for advanced courses on structural reliability or on probabilistic methods for structural design. These courses have been held in different countries and have been given by different groups of lecturers. They were aimed at engineers and researchers who already had some exposure to structural reliability methods and thus they presented overviews of the work in the various topics. The book includes a selection of those contributions, which can be of support for future courses or for engineers and researchers that want to have an update on specific topics. It is considered a complement to the existing textbooks on structural reliability, which normally ensure the coverage of the basic topics but then are not extensive enough to cover some more specialised aspects. In addition to the contributions drawn from those lectures there are several papers that have been prepared specifically for this book, aiming at complementing the others in providing an overall account of the recent advances in the field. It is with sadness that in the meanwhile we have seen the disappearance of two of the contributors to the book and, in fact two of the early contributors to this field.Trade Review`...The book is well-produced and the diagrams, tables and graphs are clearly readable. Book SynopsisA pioneer in interaction design tells the stories of designers who changed the way people use everyday things in the digital era, interviewing the founders of Google, the creator of The Sims, the inventors and developers of the mouse and the desktop, and many others.Digital technology has changed the way we interact with everything from the games we play to the tools we use at work. Designers of digital technology products no longer regard their job as designing a physical object—beautiful or utilitarian—but as designing our interactions with it. In Designing Interactions, award-winning designer Bill Moggridge introduces us to forty influential designers who have shaped our interaction with technology. Moggridge, designer of the first laptop computer (the GRiD Compass, 1981) and a founder of the design firm IDEO, tells us these stories from an industry insider's viewpoint, tracing the evolution of ideas from inspiration to outcome. • Reimagining Alternative Technology for Design in

Taylor & Francis Ltd Reimagining Alternative Technology for Design in

Book SynopsisReimagining Alternative Technology for Design in the 21st Century presents a new approach to design that harnesses still-valuable alternative, traditional and abandoned technologies alongside the creation of new ones to address contemporary global problems. It focuses on design opportunities that reduce energy and material consumption to tackle issues such as climate change and pollution in industrialized economies. The book takes the reader on a journey surveying different facets of human activity to identify underused and discarded technologies that could be indispensable today. It critically addresses newer approaches to design and technology by comparing them to existing alternatives, unpacking examples including air conditioning with smart thermostats, electric lighting, durable reusable products, domestic maintenance tools and methods of transportation.Written for practicing designers and students in industrial design, architecture, sustainable design anTrade Review"The age of buildings as ‘machines for living in’ is ending. We live in an increasingly unpredictable world. ‘Fit for purpose’ building in the 21st century must cope with evermore extreme weather events, grid failures, finite natural resources and soaring costs of living. Buildings, and the products and furnishings inside them, must be durable, repairable and adaptable. Alternative technologies re-connect people with the free, natural energy flows of the ecosystems they occupy, enabling them to do more for less, educating them to protect against and exploit those powerful flows where useful. This book is a great read for all who are keen to survive and thrive in a different future." Susan Roaf, Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, UK"Sometimes the best idea is one that’s tried, true and ready for a comeback. Kennedy makes a brilliant argument for innovative revivals of ideas, products and goods whose time has once again come. Book SynopsisHydrostatic Testing, Corrosion, and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion: A Field Manual for Control and Prevention teaches industry professionals, managers, and researchers how to combat corrosion failure associated with hydrotesting. It discusses how a test liquid must be selected, how corrosion by bacteria should be controlled, and how to eliminate the risk of leakage. Rather than teaching how hydrotests should be conducted, it helps the reader evaluate the quality of a hydrotest thatâs already been conducted in terms of oxygen scavenger use, biocide testing, inhibitor addition, and water quality and explains the tasks that top and middle management must ensure are taken with respect to corrosion assessment of hydrotesting. The manual also discusses microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) as the main corrosion mechanism related to post-hydrotesting and offers essential knowledge on combating this corrosion process. In addition to being a manual for top and middle management on how to deal with corrosion, this book also:Trade Review"This book offers the best available guidance on how to avoid microbially influenced corrosion in pipelines and similar equipment.
