Book SynopsisSofie Koborg Brøsen is eleven years old and, like other children of her age, goes to a mainstream school, loves reading comics and being with her family and her cat, Teddy. But Sofie is not the same as everyone else - she has autism spectrum disorder. Fed up with being misunderstood by her classmates, she has written a book about her world so others can learn to understand her, and vice versa.Sofie describes her day-to-day life in clear, unambiguous language and tells readers about things she finds difficult: being given too many instructions, disruptions to her routine, being teased, strong lights and smells and too much noise. She also tells about what she really likes - feeling accepted by other children, reading, nature, her autism camp and her cat. This fully illustrated book has already attracted much positive attention in Denmark. It is a readable insider's view of life as a child with autism attending a mainstream school and will be an invaluable resource in helping other children to understand their classmates with autism spectrum disorders. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Nurture Groups in School and at Home: Connecting
Book SynopsisThis book explores the ways in which pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties can be effectively engaged in schooling - either in school or at home. It explains the social and emotional underpinnings of learning and presents practical strategies for aiding engagement.Nurture groups, originally devised and implemented in the 1970s, are specially designed classes that cater for pupils having difficulties in adjusting to the requirements of mainstream classrooms. Paul Cooper and Yonca Tiknaz present evidence of the success of nurture groups from the perspectives of the children participating in them, their parents and school staff members who manage nurture groups in schools, and examine what factors affect the success of the group. From this they draw key messages for effective practice, including the fundamental importance of recognising a child's emotional needs and meeting them, and the pivotal role of the relationship between the teaching staff co-ordinating the group.Nurture Groups in School and at Home will provide essential information and accessible advice for teaching professionals running nurture groups in schools and for parents and carers running them at home.Trade ReviewI would recommend this as a useful book for all Educational Psychology Service libraries and, if you can, get schools, who are nurturing, innovative and who put the emotional health of their children and families before results, to read it too. -- DebateThe gentle pace of the book does not detract from its clear message: there is no blame; no fault; only unhappy children and desperate parents and teachers. Each chapter is clearly defined and the main points summarised, making its content accessible. Indeed, one of the book's greatest strengths is the importance placed on the role of the carer and professional working together and not in isolation. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any adult involved with nurture groups of interested in the underpinning principles of how a child learns. -- Community CareThe book provides essential information and advice for teaching professionals who run nurture groups and for carers running them at home. I would have no hesitations in recommending it to any dult involved with nurture groups or interested in the underpinning principles of how a child learns. -- Community CareI was impressed by the book's structure and accessible format at each chapter is succintly introduced and summarised, easing the reader's ability to make sense of the concepts. Any therapists working alongside schools in supporting youn people with mental health problems, this book has much to offer. -- Children, Young People & FamiliesBack in the 1970s someone came up with a very good idea; provide specially-designed classes for students who have difficulty adjusting to the mainstream, staff the classes with techers trained in nurturing and meeting the needs of these special students, and engage a range of educators, parents, and peers to create a supportive environment that is student-centred. According to Cooper (education,U. of Leicester} and Tiknaz {rising educational achievement, U. of Leicester) such nurture groups are effective in the classroom and in the home at bringing children with social, emotional, and behavioural needs closer to accepting educational and other experiences. Writing for educators and parents, they describe nuture groups and what school staff about them, the role of caring people in nurture groups, selection of students for groups, research indications, models for analyzing problems situations and key messages for practitioners. -- BookNews.comTable of ContentsPreface. 1. It is essential for parents of children with autism or individuals with autism who have made the decision to incorporate animal service or therapy into their lives. This book would also be incredibly useful for animal trainers, especially those belonging to service organizations who are considering accommodating individuals with autism in their service and therapy schemes. -- Journal of Autism and Developmental DisordersWhen I first received 'Animal-Assisted Interventions for Individuals with Autism' for review, I half expected it to be a cheerleading book filled with anecdotes about the panacea of using animals with those affected by autism. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to find a well-written book that is well researched and addresses my interests and concerns as a psychologist new to the area of animal-assisted interventions. -- PsycCRITIQUES[E]ssential reading for families, teachers, and anyone who is interested in using service animals to help individuals on the autism spectrum -- from the foreword by Temple GrandinThis book looks at how therapies involving animals can be used to help individuals with autism to develop skill, including sensory and social skills, to manage challenging behaviors, and improve quality of life.Whether participating in therapeutic horseback riding, utilizing a trained service dog, visiting a dolphin therapy center, or simply experiencing companion animal therapy, people with autism can reap a multitude of beneifits from interaction with furry, feathered, and finned friends. With recommendations for resources and further reading, this book wull be of great interest to people with autism, their parents, and the professionals who work with them. -- Autism UsDid you know that dogs may be trained to help children with autism? Mr Carnegie was an incredible teacher who, besides officially teaching me English in the classroom, outdoors kindled a lifelong love and appreciation of the natural world. John Murray Press Beyond Behaviours: Using Brain Science and
Book SynopsisA PARADIGM SHIFT FOR CAREGIVERS THAT WILL REVOLUTIONIZE THE WAY YOU APPROACH, TREAT OR PARENT A CHILD WITH CHALLENGING OR EXPLOSIVE BEHAVIOURS. When you are confronted with a child who is troubled, disruptive, oppositional, defiant or angry - whether you are a parent or a teacher - it can be difficult to know the best way to support them. Traditional methods of 'shaping' a child's behaviour can often be at best ineffective, at worst distressing, for child and adult alike.Drawing on 30 years of experience, internationally known paediatric psychologist Dr Mona Delahooke describes these troubled behaviours as the 'tip of the iceberg', important signals that point to deeper, individual differences in the child that we need to understand and address before we can resolve behavioural challenges. Using the very latest neuroscientific research Beyond Behaviours makes the case that many children who can't seem to behave simply don't have the developmental capacity to do so - yet. This book uses neuroscientific findings to help you deconstruct behaviour challenges, and to discover their cause and triggers for your child. It will show you how to apply this knowledge across a variety of behaviour spectrums, from children diagnosed with autism or other forms of neurodiversity, to those who might have been exposed to toxic stress or trauma during their early years. There are practical strategies to implement at every stage, backed up by impactful worksheets and charts, with a strong emphasis not on 'managing' behaviour, but instead on helping children and families build positive experiences to counteract the stress and pressure felt by everybody when you're working, or living, with a child who has behavioural challenges. Accessible, practical, warmly supportive and steeped in research and clinical expertise, Beyond Behaviours offers a break-through book which guides us - parents and caregivers alike - to the realisation that the most important tool in our toolkit is always our connection with the child standing in front of us.Trade Review"Beyond Behaviors provides the basis for a paradigm shift in understanding and treating children with disruptive behaviors. this accessible and beautifully written volume, Dr. Delahooke pulls the veil off this myth and replaces it with a neurobiologically-informed treatment model that provides insightful directives leading to effective outcomes." -- Stephen W. Porges, PhD, Distinguished University Scientist, Indiana University, Professor of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina, and author of "The Pocket Guide to the Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe""As a developmental psychologist, compassion teacher, and autism mum, I can whole-heartedly say this book is brilliant. Traditional methods of 'shaping' children's behaviors typically ignore children's emotional state, at great cost to the child's ability to learn, develop, and form secure relationships. This book provides concrete ways to help understand safety as the foundation for children's learning, working with rather than against natural brain functions to maximize learning potential." -- Kristin Neff, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Texas at Austin, and author of "Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself""I love this book. It will be one I give and recommend over and over. Beyond Behaviors is succinct, accessible, practical, science-based. And it's a game changer. My hope is that not only parents, educators, clinicians, and all helping professionals read it, but that it becomes required reading for professionals in training." -- Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, LCSW, Executive Director of The Center for Connection and co-author of the bestsellers "The Whole-Brain Child" and "No-Drama Discipline""This book will embrace every parent and professional puzzling over behavioral challenges and make you question the assumptions about their meaning and re-evaluate how to help. Beyond Behaviors will help every child and family progress, feel safe, enjoy relationships, and develop to their fullest." -- Serena Wieder, PhD, Clinical Director, Profectum Foundation, co-creator of the DIR Model, and co-author of "The Child with Special Needs" and "Engaging Autism""Dr. Mona Delahooke is a child psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with children who have behavioral challenges. With compassion and insight, she guides us toward creating healing environments of safety and security." -- Marilyn R. Sanders, MD, FAAP, Attending Neonatologist, Connecticut Children's Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics, University of Connecticut School of Medicine"I love Beyond Behaviors. One of the best features of this book are the practical, empowering, step-by-step ideas for finding the calm self-acceptance necessary for building a healing, supportive relationship with even the most challenging and frightened child." -- Dona Matthews, PhD, Developmental Psychologist and co-author of "Beyond Intelligence: Secrets for Raising Happily Productive Kids""Brilliant! This book is an essential read for all people who care for or interact with children." -- Megan Stilwill, DO FAAP, Paediatrician"This is a wonderful book that takes complicated concepts and new ways of thinking about children and makes them digestible and useable for parents and professionals alike." -- Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L, Director of Education, The Star Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder"This book should be required reading for frustrated parents and those of us in a position of diagnosing or creating behavior plans for children. Imagine the amazing outcomes if we followed Mona Delahooke's guide to empower and support children through their big feelings and behaviors, rather than focusing only on the tip of the iceberg." -- Nicole Schwarz, MA, LMFT, Parent CoachEssential reading for parents and professionals alike in supporting children and young people with behavioural challenges. * Dr Christopher Moore *

Book Synopsis"I recommend this book as an important contribution to the debate on pedagogy in special education. It is largely well written and informative and rich with ideas and opinions."Educational Review What, if anything, is âspecialâ about teaching children with special or exceptional learning needs? This book addresses this question, looking at pupilsâ special learning needs including low attainment, learning difficulties, language difficulties, emotional and behavioural problems and sensory needs. Some special needs groups (for example dyslexia) have argued strongly for the need for particular specialist approaches. In contrast, many proponents of inclusion have argued that âgood teaching is good teaching for allâ and that all children benefit from similar approaches. Both positions fail to scrutinise this issue rigorously and coherently, and it is this aspect which distinguishes this book. Nova Science Publishers Inc Emotionally, Socially, and Learning Disabled
Book SynopsisThis book presents the reader with the main inherent problems of double-exceptionality, namely, the difficulties educators and mental health professionals must deal with when working with gifted disabled children and youths. The first chapter describes ten of these problems; on the one hand, some have been caused by unfamiliarity of the basic terms and definitions of giftedness and on the other, learning or other disabilities; some by treatment failures of gifted disabled children and youths. The main part of the book, chapters 2-5, include six detailed case studies of gifted children and adolescents who were dealing, in some cases, with learning disabilities, but in all cases with social, emotional, psychological and familial issues that jeopardized not only their educational and professional future, but also their well-being and even their mental health. These chapters include also shorter vignettes of gifted disabled young and older children whom I have met in the last thirty years. Some of these cases-both the longer and the shorter case studies-are of students who had considered dropping out of school. This book challenges the assumption that dropping out is necessarily also an educational failure. Some of the cases described did not have a "happy ending": they describe young people who unsuccessfully tried to be "like everybody else," an attempt that has always been hard to live with. The last chapter shows that only when all components in the child''s or adolescent''s life, the family, the education system, and the social circle she or he belonged to encouraged and nurtured the child, materializing one''s giftedness while maintaining a high level of well-being and social acceptability can be accomplished. The chapter of the book analyzes these factors while showing how misunderstanding of the child''s needs, along with inability to provide her or him with the proper educational and psychological help might cause "giving up" one''s giftedness, deterioration in the social/emotional situation or both.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Special Education & Early Arithmetic
Book SynopsisThis book presents research on the subject of early arithmetic conducted in a Swedish compulsory school. The research is based on the epistemology of radical constructivism and the methodology "multiple interviews" and "the process of supervision". The problem was investigated by comparing children''s early arithmetical knowledge-building in the compulsory school (CS), in CS''s remedial teaching (REM) and in the school for intellectually disabled (SID). In an intervention study, twenty children of various ages in SID and REM participated, as well as their teachers. The aim was to adjust the teaching content to harmonize with the children''s ways of operating and longitudinally investigate the children''s progress, as well as to facilitate teachers'' model-building of their children''s various ways of operating and needs for learning.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Education of Students with Disabilities: Federal
Book SynopsisThe largest sources of federal funding for elementary and secondary education are the Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The ESEA provides funding and services for a broad population of students, including disadvantaged students, migrant students, neglected and delinquent students, and students with limited English proficiency. Approximately 6 million students with disabilities aged 6 through 21 attend elementary and secondary schools; however they are not afforded special services under the ESEA due to their disability status. Both the ESEA and IDEA aim to improve the educational outcomes for students with disabilities. The ways in which they do this sometimes differ, and when the laws are not fully or clearly aligned it can be difficult for educators to plan and execute an appropriate education for these students. This book highlights the federal issues and policies pertaining to the education of students with disabilities.

Nova Science Publishers Inc S.T.E.M. Education: Strategies for Teaching
Book SynopsisAdvancing education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in U.S. public schools has been at the forefront of educational issues and a national priority (President''s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, 2010). Although there is a need for this ambitious initiative, students with disabilities has been left out of the conversation. Individuals with disabilities have been underrepresented in STEM fields for many years. Traditionally individuals with disabilities in STEM careers lag even further behind discrepancies of race and gender in these areas. Therefore, the need to provide general and special education teachers practices and strategies to improve outcomes for students with disabilities in STEM areas is imperative. The nation''s changing demographics and continued need to remain globally competitive makes it clear that general and special education teachers need strategies to support, instruct and engage students with disabilities in STEM education. Students in U.S. schools are academically behind their international peers in STEM areas. Currently, the United States ranks 17th in science and 25th in mathematics among other nations (National Center for Education Statistics, 2011). In the field of engineering, college programs in China and India graduated many more engineers than in the U.S. (Gerefii, Wadhwa, Rissing, & Ong, 2008). For example, in 2011, China''s engineering graduates totaled one million (Shammas, 2011), as compared to colleges in the U.S. which graduated 84,599 engineers (Deffree, 2012).

Nova Science Publishers Inc Student, Environment, Task & Technology Tools for
Book SynopsisFor the past two decades, Joy Zabala''s SETT framework has served Assistive Technology (AT) professionals as an effective tool in the collaborative decision-making process toward identifying effective technology resources for students with special needs. Attention to the student, the environment, learning tasks, and technology (SETT) has made the difference for students with disabilities to be able to participate effectively in the inclusive general education classroom. Education policy has changed since then. Federal legislation (NCLB & IDEIA) enacted since 2000 drastically changed the way schools and practitioners address inclusive education, providing students with disabilities extensive access to their peers and the general education curriculum. Students with disabilities are often required to receive general education instruction from general educators in math, science, social studies, and English language arts as indicated by their individual education plan (IEP). In many instances, special education students are placed in collaborative teaching settings in which a special education and general education partner teach all the students in the class. This gives students with disabilities access to their general education peers, curriculum and teachers. However, this inclusive instruction setting presents these students with learning challenges. With such changes have come changes in instructional practice and decision-making. No longer can traditional approaches to classroom instruction continue to meet the needs of all children. This textbook is designed to outline the multiple factors to be considered in order to effectively make essential decisions relative to the student, the environment, the task, and the technology that is being used. The goal of this book is to guide classroom teachers to re-examine instructional practices which limit access to students with disabilities and also provides access to useful and appropriate instruction technology.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Education of Students with Disabilities: School
Book SynopsisFormerly excluded from measures of educational performance, students with disabilities (SWDs) are now explicitly recognised in federal and state accountability systems. At the national level, the 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) laid the foundation for accountability for SWDs by requiring states to include these students in state and district assessments and to report their participation and performance. This requirement was further reinforced by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as reauthorised in 2001, which established SWDs as an explicit student subgroup for the purpose of determining whether schools make adequate yearly progress (AYP). The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education (ED) has a congressional mandate to conduct a national assessment of how well the IDEA is achieving its purposes. As part of the national assessment of IDEA, this study is intended to provide policy-relevant information about the education of SWDs by examining their inclusion in school accountability systems and by describing the use of school practices that may relate to educational outcomes for these students. This book presents descriptive information on school-level accountability, AYP performance, and school improvement status of schools accountable for SWD subgroup performance under Title I of the ESEA, as well as schools not accountable for SWD subgroup performance. Moreover, the book presents descriptive findings focusing on school practices related to staffing, student support, instructional time, educational placements, teacher collaboration, and professional development in schools explicitly held accountable for the performance of the SWD subgroup and schools that are not accountable for the performance of the SWD subgroup.

She Writes Press Canaries Among Us: A Mother's Story
Book SynopsisFor those drawn to both Tara Westover’s candid view into a difficult childhood and Susan Cain’s research on undervalued traits . . . Canaries Among Us encourages us to reconsider and appreciate kids who learn and think differently.“The courage to put this story on paper should not be overlooked . . . Taylor addresses so many noteworthy things . . . includ[ing] the importance of inclusion, diversity, and how to protect children who are vulnerable. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to all parents [and] educators. Everyone can benefit from a better understanding of [each] other’s differences.” —San Francisco Book Review,5/5 STARSCanaries Among Us explores one of the most widespread threats to children’s well-being: a lack of acceptance. Kayla Taylor starts her day as an ordinary parent at a respected school, but her family’s life turns upside-down when her child becomes the prime target of bullying. Taylor assumes the school will partner with her to solve the problem but is confounded when she finds the opposite: officials not only turn a blind eye to cruelty but also ostracize and attack anyone who speaks up against it. Frustrated by this failure to protect vulnerable students, Taylor researches the challenges those in charge are most unwilling to discuss with her—like bullying, learning differences, and anxiety. She then digs deeper to study empowering responses that are woefully absent from many parenting books and teaching curricula—including validation, empathy, apologies, forgiveness, healing, and belonging. These concepts end up providing the guideposts Taylor needs to navigate both the exquisite joy and raw heartache inherent in raising a child who doesn’t fit society’s definition of “normal.”Canaries Among Us is both a heart-rending exposé of the ways we mistreat unique children and a searing indictment of society’s tendency to revictimize people in their times of greatest need. Throughout, Canaries Among Us points to an alternative: supporting, and even celebrating, the dazzling variety of our humanity.Trade Review“This is an important book with essential messages for all of us . . . Let’s hope that [Canaries Among Us] helps to open up the discussion in order to affect some change in our society.”—Booktrib“Canaries Among Us is a masterpiece . . . a poignant, urgent, and important story that has yet to be told and needs to be heard. I recommend it to everyone involved in raising or educating children.”—Rosalie Whitlock, CEO of the Children’s Health Council “For any parent who has worried their child does not fit in or who has battled with a school to do what is right for a child, this amazing book will heal your soul while offering important strategies, insights, and even several smiles along the way.”—Jo Boaler, Stanford, Co-Founder of youcubed.org “Overall, this is a powerful book that offers a brilliant exposé of how, even after the rise of anti-bullying efforts, enforcement remains a challenge, and it illustrates what happens when anti-bullying efforts are finally honored . . . A necessary book on the intersections of neurodivergence and bullying.” —Kirkus Reviews“The courage to put this story on paper should not be overlooked . . . Parents will be swept into Taylor’s story, experiencing the family’s pain and eventual triumphs alongside them, and some may even recognize their own biases and contributions to school bullying in the process.” —Booklife by Publisher’s Weekly
