Book SynopsisYour guide to excelling in the complex role of a special education administrator The job of the administrator of special education is arguably one of the most difficult in a school districtand that complexity can be overwhelming. It requires an aspect of every administrative job in the district, including budgets, human resources, student advocacy, and curriculum and assessment. Written by two veteran special education administrators with more than 100 years of combined experience, this book shows current and aspiring special education administrators how to excel in the many demanding areas of their position, allowing them to be effective administrators and educational leaders. Among the many topics included in the book are The importance of visibility in the form of face-to-face interactions to assist staff, students, and building principals The importance of parents in the process The significance of confidentiality, due process, program development, and working with advocates Insight into decision-making and relationship-building A critical tool in any special education administrator's box, as well as building administrators, central office administrators and school committee members, this book provides practical and friendly advice for a difficult but critical job.Trade Review"The role of the administrator of special education in any school district might be the most challenging position in the neighborhood. With constrained budgets and burgeoning needs for students who require special services, the typical administrator often struggles with complex if not agonizing life-altering decisions. Layered upon this reality is a massive number of regulations, codes, laws, standards, and paperwork that must be followed and attended to. Fortunately, two retired administrators of special education have written a book on the administrator’s role that reads like an encyclopedia but exudes warmth and passion on most every page. This impressive book brings the reader inside the important and mercurial world of special education, presenting a wealth of critical information while simultaneously speaking to the reader with unabashed candor and humility. I particularly enjoyed reading the anecdotes that speak to the struggles and triumphs each encountered along the way. Students who require special education services often need strong voices advocating for their needs. The world is a better place because of the voices of the authors. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in or is involved in special education. It should be mandatory reading for all new administrators of special education." -- Charles Appelstein, MSW"For a novice special education administrator, this book is a professional gem. Grounded in integrity, and keeping students at the forefront of their work, the authors have created a practical guide for how to approach and manage the all-encompassing role of administrator of special education. Starting with a refresher on special education law and moving into a myriad of topics which fall under the responsibility of director, this resource is invaluable to all those working in the field of special education." -- Tamara Barrera, M.Ed."I have the good fortune to have been mentored by Bob McArdle in my career as an administrator of special education and have worked with Jim over the last 11 years as a senior district leader. What a benefit to the larger community of special education administrators that they can now access the collective knowledge and experience that the authors have in the field through this book! The role of the administrator of special education can be a lonely one and singular in its nature: The knowledge and skills required to do this job well are not often shared by anyone else in the district—not principals, curriculum directors, or many superintendents. This book offers insight into everything the role entails and how to lead the work." -- Alison Elmer, MEd"It does not take long for the reader to realize that these seasoned special educators have the knowledge, skills, experience, and dispositions to provide a treasure trove of useful information for the novice or veteran educator, whether they are a general education teacher, special education teacher, principal, superintendent, or special education administrator. Ealey and McArdle leave no stone unturned and thoroughly address such topics as programs and services, discipline, budget development, professional development, supervision, and evaluation. This book is a must and one you will want to keep close at hand." -- Stephen Gould, EdD"The special education administrator position is the most difficult job in public education. Challenges abound—conflicts with parents, teachers, and other administrators; changes to department of education regulations and guidance; litigation looming behind every decision—and these are just a few. Perhaps the biggest, ever-present challenge is balancing advocacy for students with disabilities and the fiduciary responsibility to the school district. But help is on the way: Earley and McArdle have written a book that provides aid to both new and veteran special education administrators. Based on their extensive 100+ years of experience as special education directors, they offer guidance in how to navigate the passage between the Scylla and Charybdis of conflicting demands. From compliance to best practice, they offer tips and strategies for dealing with both the long-term and day-to-day challenges for special education directors. There is a dearth of similar literature, and I would highly recommend their book as a text in higher education courses, an item in the library of special education organizations, and most important, as a resource on the desk of every special education administrator." -- Edward McCaul, EdD"This is a succinct guidebook that distills many years of practical experience and provides the reader with concrete guidance on the various aspects of the role of administrator of special education. The authors address not only the anticipated issues associated with the position, but also nicely weave in helpful advice on other potentially overlooked yet essential skills and actions necessary to be a successful administrator in public education. This book is an excellent resource that will be of great benefit to anyone contemplating or beginning their career as an administrator, and it will greatly assist them and even experienced administrators of special education in confidently navigating the myriad issues to be addressed in that role." -- Thomas Nuttall, Esquire"The provision of special education services is essential to ensure that all school-age students receive a free and appropriate public education. This book presents effective procedures to implement the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and its many complexities. While the administering of special education can be a daunting task, authors Earley and McArdle, with their experience and expansive knowledge in special education administration, offer recommendations to work proactively with school administrators, special and general education teachers and related services staff, parents, advocates, and other stakeholders. They share strategies that result in services that are responsive to student needs and the ever-present decision on placement in the educational setting in which the students can make effective educational progress. I enthusiastically recommend this book for school administrators and principals, directors of special education, and as a text for undergraduate and graduate students in special education courses." -- Don Ricciato, PhD"There are no better Administrators of Special Education (ASEs) than Jim Earley and Bob McArdle, and now their wisdom is available to any educator who reads their book. Drawing on their decades of experience in special education leadership, they have created a thorough and practical guide that provides a wealth of information, useful advice, and most importantly, ways to assess difficult situations and arrive at reasonable and equitable solutions. The book is a master class in identifying core issues and applying useful approaches to think about and solve many seemingly intractable problems. Any professional involved in special education will benefit from its clear and well-formulated approach to meeting the needs of students with special needs while also addressing the needs of the numerous stake holders in special education. A Practical Approach to Special Education Administration is long overdue in the field and will have significant impact." -- Joe Ristuccia"I read [A Practical Approach to Special Education Administration] almost immediately, from cover to cover, with a pencil in my hand, underlining and making notes as I went. It is an absolute "must" manual for any would-be SPED administrator. If I had this book available to me when I was a doctoral student and coming up through the ranks, I am positive I would have become an LEA SPED ADMIN. It is a tremendous blueprint for what a university-level administration course of studies should look like, leading to a degree and—even more importantly—a job." -- Dr. Laurence M. Book SynopsisThis book guides PreK-12 educators and school-based clinicians on how to embed socially just practices into their day-to-day roles to achieve more equitable outcomes. Social Justice in Schools uses vivid vignettes and personal reflections to demystify complex concepts. It pinpoints ways educators can better understand their racially and ethnically minoritized students, reflect on and challenge implicit bias in assessment and decision making, and build meaningful homeâschool relationships. Chapters begin with clearly framed learning outcomes and close with discussion questions and resources for professional learning. In a convenient large-size format, the book includes reproducible handouts and forms that can be downloaded and printed for repeated use. This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.Trade Review"This essential book will engage educators across disciplines and at all levels--from preservice teachers to practicing school psychologists. It provides insight into what social justice means in the context of schooling and how educators' daily practices can facilitate social justice for the children, families, and communities they serve. Barrett has created an easy-to-read book that is a call to action for educators concerned with equity, fairness, and opportunity for marginalized students."--Sherrie L. Proctor, PhD, School Psychology Program, Queens College, City University of New York "A toolkit for educators who endeavor to transform their classrooms into just communities. Barrett skillfully weaves theory, research, and social justice practices, and includes thought-provoking exercises at the end of each chapter. The rich stories, helpful diagrams, and community-building activities will help educators develop the needed skill set to practice social justice in the schoolhouse. Drawing on his own experiences as a school psychologist, Barrett has crafted a needed resource aligned with the NASP Practice Model."--Terri N. Watson, PhD, School of Education, The City College of New York "While many social justice books are written from a theoretical perspective that leaves the reader wondering what to do next, Barrett’s book focuses on knowledge and tools that educators can use right away. Case studies, vignettes, resources, and reflection questions aid in understanding specific ways to enact anti-racist ideals. Using the 'Five C's of Equity' described in the book will allow school teams to change practices, policies, and behavior to ensure equitable outcomes. A 'must read'!"--Andria Amador, EdD, NCSP, Senior Director of Behavioral Health Services, Boston Public Schools "Barrett highlights the intersection between theory and practice in order to move equity from talk to action. He provides a roadmap on how to ensure adult issues don’t get in the way of responding to what students need. This text inspires and equips educators in contexts where equity is a collective goal. What resonates with me most as a superintendent is how the book helps us learn more about not just what we think social justice is in schools, but, more important, what we can do with it."--Nyah D. Hamlett, EdD, Superintendent, Chapel Hill–Carrboro City Schools, North Carolina "Social Justice in Schools is a book for this day and time. Barrett adeptly walks the fine line between the prescriptive and descriptive to give educators a framework to appropriately serve the children in their care. This book is for new and veteran teachers, school psychologists, and other school professionals. As a middle school division director and an educational consultant, I found tangible tools for professional development. Run, don't walk, to get this book."--Worokya Duncan, EdD, Head of Upper School, The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, New York City "Rooted in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, this book provides an accessible, resourceful, and thorough framework for centering social justice work in school contexts. Drawing on literature from multiple disciplines and from his own positionalities and life experiences as a Black professional, Barrett challenges the reader to critically reflect about power and to unlearn deficit frames. He invites all educators to a journey of creative co-imagination of systemic change at the level of policy, assessment, and in learning spaces, proposing a transformation that can center all languages and ways of learning."--María Rosa Brea-Spahn, PhD, CCC-SLP, Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, New York University-Table of ContentsForeword, Ivory A. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisSocial skills may impact a student with a disability more than the disability itself. Learn the social deficits and challenges associated with disabilities as well as strategies to support social skill development. A variety of professionals share their success strategies so readers (parents, teachers, counselors, psychologists, and others working in the disability field) can incorporate them into their professional toolbox and practice. Included are strategies from Special Educators, School Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors, an Occupational Therapist, and a Psychologist. Current issues such as bullying are explored in addition to ways that professionals and universities should be involved in supporting social skills of students with disabilities. A special section on working with parents includes a handout with strategies parents can use while social skills are developing in their child.Trade ReviewMyers (Univ. of Mary Washington), editor and contributor of five chapters, rightfully notes that social skills associated with disability have long been neglected, and pinpoints the major cause for the neglect: social skills are numerous in deficits as well as unique to specific disabilities and to each individual. In addition, she is very blunt as to why there has not been much headway, stating that teachers simply do not know what to do about social skills. Myers attempts to address the issue and provides researched strategies geared to aid educators in assisting children with disabilities to learn social skills. She proposes admirable goals, and her original attempts can only be appreciated. However, in the end, the solution suggested is too simplistic for the issue to be resolved realistically, since the issue has so many layers that all have to be examined and resolved individually for a truly successful result. Therefore, this book is an excellent first step for students and those already working in the disability field, as it suggests incorporating change to successfully support social skills for children with disability so that they can be prepared to transition to adulthood with all the necessary skills. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduate and professional collections. * CHOICE *As a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who cares for hundreds of children with disabilities, one of the most difficult, most demanding, and most important questions I face is "How can I help my child develop good social skills?" Social Skills Deficits by Dr. Myers and her team is a well-researched book that also draws on the clinical insights of experienced practitioners. I especially appreciate the book’s emphasis on early intervention, playfulness, and naturalistic settings. The eclectic approach taken here is the best because one size of intervention does not fit all children with disabilities. I highly recommend this book. -- Dr. Richard Solomon, Medical Director of The PLAY Project and the Ann Arbor Center for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Ann Arbor, MichiganRelevant and Refreshing! Lack of attention to the importance of social skills in individuals with disabilities is where we have historically fallen down on the job. In a different era, a different time and place, when attempts were made to educate children with learning disabilities (like me) the irresistible urge on the part of educators, administrators, and parents was to break the will of a spirited child in order to 'teach' them—often while overlooking the inner self and social potential of the child. As a result, today, we have many broken individuals who feel like school failures. There have been great strides made over the years, but Nicole Myers' book is a goldmine of practical information for professionals who work with individuals with disabilities and importantly the parents of these individuals as well. Clear, concise, and easy to follow, she provides expert insight and a fabulous array of practical tools for developing social skills in children—importantly emphasizing the 'one size does NOT fit all concept.'As a person with dyslexia, I found getting good grades in school to be impossible. However 'good grades' were not a marker of my intelligence. Luckily I was able to foster my communication and social skills and found my true talents in life. I applaud this book. -- Nelson Lauver, Author, Speaker, Broadcaster, Author of Most Unlikely to Succeed: The Trials, Travels, and Ultimate "Triumphs" of a Throwaway KidSocial skills instruction is critical for the success of students with disabilities. Dr. Myers' text addresses this essential and often overlooked skill in a practical and universal style. The inclusion of the role of university faculty and parents is especially insightful in addressing social skills training across all settings….A long-awaited text for all professionals working with students with disabilities. -- Sue Clark, Ed.D., Executive Director of Student Services, Stafford County Public Schools, Stafford, VADr. Myers has developed a text that is a tremendous asset to the field. It allows readers to gain an understanding of issues related to social skills deficits in students with disabilities. Through a unique organization, she brings together experts and research to offer practical application and successful support for stakeholders. -- Suzanne G. Houff, PhD, Professor Emerita, University of Mary Washington, Adjunct Faculty, The CitadelSocial deficits can result in significant school failure for students with disabilities, but in many textbooks they are relegated to a short chapter. This new book, Social Skills Deficits in Students with Disabilities, clearly addresses all the aspects of these essential skills. Each chapter begins with focus questions and makes use of case studies to illustrate practices which are effective in developing confident, collaborative, and resilient learners. Clear descriptions of the way in which teachers, counselors, therapists, and parents can help students meet social challenges are sure to make an important difference in the way students with disabilities meet their daily challenges. -- Dr. Norah Hooper, Professor of Special Education, University of Mary WashingtonTable of ContentsINTRODUCTIONPREFACE CHAPTERSCHAPTER 1 – Professional’s Role in Supporting Social SkillsDr. Helen Nicole Frye MyersCHAPTER 2 – Current Issues related to Social Skills Deficits Dr. Helen Nicole Frye MyersCHAPTER 3 – How Special Education Supports Social Skills Dr. Helen Nicole Frye MyersCHAPTER 4 – How School Counselors Support Social Skills Dr. Amy MilsomCHAPTER 5 – Peer Process Social Skills GroupsDr. Christopher HaleyCHAPTER 6 – Use of Relatedness in Working with ChildrenKimberly S. Book SynopsisBeyond Equality in the American Classroom: The Case for Inclusive Education addresses the basis of inclusive education for students with exceptionalities from the perspective of social justice and scholarship-activism. Drawing on historical, legislative, and philosophical references, this book builds the case for including individuals with exceptionalities in general education classrooms as a matter of social justice and civil rights. Providing a comprehensive foundation for exploring the concept of inclusive education scholastically, Shyman provides a well-organized and clearly-structured treatise for both the philosophy of inclusive education as well as a means of putting inclusive education into practice in American schools. With pointed critiques of the current trend of standardization and traditionalization in the current educational climate, a new philosophy for addressing inclusive education is put forth. The book is both readable and scholastically legitimate, and can be adapteTrade ReviewThis wonderful book provides a compelling narrative of the historical and philosophical roots of inclusive education and contextualizes that history in a framework of social justice and critical pedagogy. Part 1 provides a historical perspective on exceptionality, including a nice chapter describing conceptions of exceptionality during biblical times and additional chapters focusing on legal developments and the genesis of exceptionality as a legitimate academic discipline. Part 2 begins with an overview of Western philosophical thought and its various connections to the study of exceptionality. Two important chapters focus on the study of exceptionality within a framework of social justice and the author's recommendations for utilizing that framework to advance the discipline and improve practice. Curiously, Shyman (Dowling College) makes only brief mention of how critical theory has been and continues to be employed in the theoretical study of exceptionality as well as applied innovations to improve practice. Readers would benefit from some foundational knowledge of critical theory concepts such as hegemony and the hidden curriculum. Overall, this is a wonderful book of great value to scholars of exceptionality as well as advanced practitioners. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate, graduate, research, and professional collections. * CHOICE *Eric Shyman’s Beyond Equality in the American Classroom: The Case for Inclusive Education offers an impassioned articulation and defense of the imperative of inclusion, as well as the implications of inclusion in the realms of both educational and disability policy and practice. . . .The work is successful and will be of interest to a variety of academic audiences. * Educational Theory *Eric Shyman argues the case for an inclusive classroom in which education is truly individualized for all students as needed, rather than treating students with disabilities as a special interest group. At a time, when textbooks are removing chapters on the historical background of special education, and the professional standards developed by the Council of Exceptional children have been rewritten to exclude the importance of historical and foundational knowledge in special education, a book like this one is vital… It is critical that professors incorporate a book like this into their reading lists. -- Elizabeth Finnegan, St. Thomas Aquinas CollegeDr. Shyman’s in depth knowledge is evident in this well documented journey through special education practices, policy and law and he provides a riveting example of social justice at this relevant time. -- Alyson Martin, Columbia UniversityIn Beyond Equality in the American Classroom: The Case for Inclusive Education, Eric Shyman examines inclusive education reform in the United States from multiple perspectives, including legal, philosophical, historical, and practical. Perhaps no other book on the topic brings such a diverse and powerful armament of intellectual resources to the challenge of interrogating inclusion. The result is a full-force challenge to the continued operation of segregated educational provision and a thoughtful exploration of the promise and limits of inclusive education as democratic practice. -- Scot Danforth, San Diego State UniversityTable of ContentsIntroduction Part I. Book SynopsisAccessible and practical, this book helps teachers incorporate executive function processes—such as planning, organizing, prioritizing, and self-checking—into the classroom curriculum. Chapters provide effective strategies for optimizing what K-12 students learn by improving how they learn. Noted authority Lynn Meltzer and her research associates present a wealth of easy-to-implement assessment tools, teaching techniques and activities, and planning aids. Featuring numerous whole-class ideas and suggestions, the book also shows how to differentiate instruction for students with learning or attention difficulties. Case examples illustrate individualized teaching strategies and classroom accommodations. More than a dozen reproducibles are included; the large-size format facilitates photocopying and day-to-day reference. Purchasers also get access to a webpage where they can download and print the reproducible materials. See also Meltzer's edited volume, Executive Function in Education, Second Edition, which presents state-of-the-art knowledge on the role of EF in learning across the content areas.Trade Review"This very readable book enables teachers to explicitly teach implicit learning skills. It balances research and practice in reminding educators that students can't master the material they need to know if we don't teach them how to do it. Meltzer shares tested strategies and abundant classroom examples. She provides necessary tools for supporting academic growth in a wide range of students, and for helping students experience the critical truth that informed effort is the key to success. This book really gets the job done!"--Carol Ann Tomlinson, EdD, William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor and Chair, Department of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy, University of Virginia "This book succeeds very well in its goal of providing usable information for teachers and other school professionals. The chapters are well written, informative, clear, and practical. The case studies and numerous case examples are excellent. These human touches help to illustrate the many areas of executive functioning that can be supported and enhanced for children with disabilities as well as typically developing children. This book will be an invaluable reference for any school or clinical personnel."--Margaret Semrud-Clikeman, PhD, ABPdN, Division Director, Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience, University of Minnesota Medical School "An excellent, detailed overview of how executive functions can be integrated into classroom instruction for all grade levels. The book is very teacher friendly, including many examples and useable forms and techniques. A major appeal of the book is its focus on creating a classroom culture that fosters executive function for all students, rather than just presenting remediation techniques for those having difficulties. The strategies for screening and ongoing assessment mean that the book can easily be used as part of a schoolwide response-to-intervention or positive behavioral support system. Each chapter follows the same format, explaining first why the area is important, and then how to implement instruction at elementary, middle, and high school levels."--Catherine A. Fiorello, PhD, School Psychology Program, Temple University "Teachers will find this book enormously useful, easy to understand, and easy to implement. Each chapter includes a remarkable array of rubrics, templates, checklists, and examples. The book looks strategically at the role of executive function (EF) in teaching and learning, showing how EF deficits can be impediments to academic, personal, and social success. By creating a culture of EF, teachers and administrators can support the growth of self-aware, resilient, problem-solving students who are ready to take on the challenges of learning, in school and beyond."--Lou Salza, MEd, Headmaster, Lawrence School, Broadview Heights, Ohio -Table of ContentsI. Book SynopsisParents and educators expect gifted children to be well-behaved, studious, and hard working. Why, then, do so many have trouble in school? According to Dr. Rosemary Callard-Szulgit, perfectionism—the number one social-emotional trait of gifted children—can actually immobilize some children and cause social adjustment problems for others. This explains why so many of today's gifted children do not, or cannot, complete school assignments or even follow through on personal responsibilities. During her forty-five year career, Callard-Szulgit has helped hundreds of students and their parents recover from the harmful effects of being perfectionists. In her second edition of Perfectionism and Gifted Children, Callard-Szulgit provides practical insight into perfectionism, discussing why so many gifted children are perfectionists while also providing common sense solutions to the problems this presents. This book will be helpful to families and educators of gifted students, as well as to gifted children themselves. The expanded question and answer section will better help parents and teachers ease children’s anxieties and behaviors that stem from the problems of perfectionism. Appendixes list current associations and advocacy groups, Internet resources, journals and magazines that address the special needs of the gifted and talented.Trade ReviewCallard-Szulgit does an excellent job of differentiating between perfectionism and aspiring to excellence. * CHOICE *In this positive, practical, and inclusive book, Rosemary Callard-Szulgit distinguishes between the pursuit of excellence, which is healthy and productive, and perfectionism, which she defines as negative and problematic. She writes about the ways highly capable learners can feel so pushed to meet their goals that they can’t acknowledge their limitations, the ways they become incapacitated by anything less than perfection, and therefore learn to avoid challenge and risk. Acknowledging her own lifelong battle with perfectionism, she writes, ‘Perfectionism hurts! It not only hurts physically and emotionally, it can interfere with relationships.’ Based on decades of experience with gifted learners, Dr. Callard-Szulgit provides proven strategies for helping young people (and their parents!) rework perfectionism into the pursuit of excellence, and reassures parents that ‘with proper counseling, perfectionists can be helped to lead a more balanced and realistic lifestyle.’ -- Dona Matthews, author, "Being Smart about Gifted Children"Dr. Rosemary Callard-Szulgit has succeeded in creating a resource that is rich with anecdotes and true-to-life experiences while also informed by research and theory. Rosemary acknowledges the often-debilitating stresses and challenges of perfectionism but more importantly guides readers in constructive directions that can lead to effective problem solving and the pursuit of excellence. -- Donald J. Encouraging positive communication and using a data-driven approach, it helps promote a win-win situation for parents and educators. This book provides helpful historical context and constructive advice illustrated with real-life examples to handle what can be an overwhelming and tense process. I wish I had read this book earlier and have already applied the practical learnings to build a positive partnership and successfully support my son’s educational experience. I am a better parent because of it."—Hilary Kinney, parent and author of Project Management for Parents"Parents, teachers, and administrators all start out with the child's best interests at heart when designing an IEP, but all too often, they fall short of that goal. Navigating Special Education is a practical guide to frontloading the process by putting relationships and communication first. The premise is unique because the authors have used their vast experience to gain insight into a winning mindset: Clear communication leads to trust. In a trusting partnership, creativity can thrive and children can receive a first class education directly suited to their individual needs."—Enia Noonan, parent, general education teacher, special education teacher"Whether you are new to the special education process or have years of experience, there is always room for productive and positive conversations. Navigating Special Education provides the pathway to fruitful partnerships through connection, mutual respect, and communication. The relationships between members of the IEP team are built on trust and openness, with one clear goal steering the ship: the success of the student. For parents and educators alike, Navigating Special Education offers concrete examples of how to work together so that the entire team can approach their meetings without unnecessary anxiety and stress, leading to the best possible outcomes for the students."—Kristen R. Massimo, MAEdL, school principal and special education consultant"I found Navigating Special Education to be very thorough in explaining every aspect of the IEP process. The case studies/example stories presented were especially helpful as lead-ins to some chapters and sections. The book is clearly written by authors who are experts in their field. They are knowledgeable about every step of the process and give good advice for parents on how to do everything from beginning the IEP procedure to revising it, as well as tactics on how to suggest changes or disagree with a school district’s recommendations."—Marisa Starr, parent of a child with an IEP"As a parent who has attended years of IEP sessions, I have a tremendous appreciation for Peggy and Tamara's expertise that they share in their book. It is an excellent, comprehensive resource loaded with relatable case studies, step-by-step guidance, examples, and a full glossary. Their 5C Model is a practical approach to the complicated IEP world. I highly recommend Navigating Special Education: The Power of Building Positive Parent–Educator Partnerships to both parents and administrators."—;Mary Abbazia, parent and managing director of Impact Planning Group"As a coach and college professor, I have looked for years for a resource that supports educators in developing a consistent, nonadversarial approach to the IEP development and implementation. This must-read book highlights the importance of communication in building a strong partnership between parents and educators with the goal of creating an actionable plan everyone can support. Peggy and Tamara’s methodologies can help all stakeholders in navigating the intricacies of collaboration, consensus building, and agreement on required service delivery."—Lauri Susi, retired professor, University of North Carolina: Greensboro, education coach, professional development trainer"Navigating Special Education: The Power of Building Positive Parent–Educator Partnerships by Peggy S. Bud & Tamara Lee Jacobson targets parents of special needs children who are new to the process of working with educators in developing appropriate interventions to meet their child's educational needs. It also aims to increase those educators' sensitivities to the importance of collaborative communication when partnering with parents. The authors' thesis is that good communication skills, outlined in their 5C Model of Communication, along with listening, perspective-taking, and data collection, are required in building positive home–school partnerships. The authors' public school careers in speech-language pathology, teaching, administration and supervision, and their experiences as a parent of a special needs child make them well-qualified to tackle the subject matter presented in the book. The book is written in a positive tone and an organized manner. The book's strength comes from its focus on the role communication plays in either derailing or assisting successful outcomes in the special educational process in public school settings. Both parents and educators will likely find, as I did, that the many case vignettes included in the book are instructive and bring clarity to the authors' point of view. Book SynopsisThis volume explores how Self-Study in Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP) contribute to teacher education in culturally and linguistically diverse communities and contexts. The chapters reflect the scholarly inquiry of teacher educators dedicated to investigating and opening to public scrutiny their efforts to improve their practice, while recognizing the impacts of such efforts on their students and teacher education overall. The common thread in these S-STEP inquiries is the explicit attention to the ways in which culture, language, and race interact and affect teaching and learning. Central to this are the ways in which S-STEP studies address two pressing but interrelated issues in teacher education research: the need for greater attention to teacher educator development and pedagogies overall, and the challenge of preparing teachers for increasingly diverse, mobile, and plurilingual schools and communities. The book will be a valuable resource for teacher educators, particularly second language teacher education scholars and those new to S-STEP methods.Trade ReviewEducation scholars, many specializing in language education, explore teacher education professional development in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts: a lifelong process, and pedagogical practices and policies related to linguistic diversity and language development. Their topics include the accidental teacher educator: learning to be a language teacher educator within diverse populations, reframing the use of visual literacy through academic diversity: a cross-disciplinary collaborative self-study, impacting classrooms and ourselves: a self-study investigation of work with and within an indigenous Pueblo community, cycles of research: a self-study of teaching research in a sheltered English instruction course, and moving beyond très bien: examining teacher mediation in lesson rehearsals. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *This book, a collection of 13 different inquiries utilizing self-study methodology...provides a very timely and critical contribution to the second language teacher education literature. Moreover, these diverse inquiries rooted in self-study in teacher education practices (S-STEP) each intentionally address the need for teachers to be prepared to work with linguistically and culturally diverse students. -- Tamara Mae RooseTable of ContentsIntroduction: Enhancing Teacher Education for an Inclusive Pluralistic World: A Shared Commitment across Multiple Landscapes; Judy Sharkey and Megan Madigan Peercy Part I: Teacher Educator Professional Development in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Contexts: A Lifelong Process 1. Book SynopsisAmong the disabilities covered at the state and federal levels, autism and related conditions are a sharply growing diagnostic category among children and young adults. In education, administrators and practitioners working with affected learners are continually faced with confronting difficult problems such as getting adequate personnel training and choosing appropriate tools and techniques that best fit the specific needs of their students while at the same time satisfying their budget, technical resources, curriculum, and profile of the ASD population they serve. The choice of appropriate tools is especially complex due to the intrinsic connection between technical specifications, educational/therapeutic methods, and the wide variety of ASDs and related conditions. In this respect, tools chosen to support children may need to target those diagnosed not only with ASD but also with such co-morbidity conditions as attention deficit disorder. The instructional strategies and use of technology currently have room for improvement for online, hybrid, and face-to-face counseling settings. Also, an effective evaluation of educational technologies and tools would be fundamentally incomplete without a thorough understanding and assessment of the related special education practices as well as psychological and neurological issues specific for ASD and learning disabilities.Education and Technology Support for Children and Young Adults With ASD and Learning Disabilities provides an in-depth analysis on the use of available technology solutions, instructional design methods, and assessment techniques in the context of standards and regulations in classroom or counseling settings. The chapters contain theoretical analyses, vital practical information, and case studies that can function as guidelines for those involved in helping children and young adults with ASD or learning disabilities in online, hybrid, or face-to-face environments. While highlighting topics such as inclusive education, online gaming environments, assistive technologies, and cognitive development, this book is ideally intended for administrators, instructional technology specialists, special education faculty, counselors, instructional designers, course developers, social workers, and psychologists along with practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, and academicians interested in education and technology support for children and young adults with ASD and learning disabilities.

What if we could work with what emerges in the moment instead of seeing it as an unplanned disruption? Teaching from the Emerging Now explores how we combine our intention with what naturally emerges to create inclusive, dynamic classrooms amid constant change. The Intentional Emergence model combines Case-in-Point and Adaptive Leadership with compassion and culturally responsive pedagogy to develop a new teaching and learning style. This approach takes the fear out of being surprised, provides concrete ways to both support and challenge students, and reimagines the classroom as a living leadership laboratory.
