  • Taylor & Francis The Curriculum Studies Reader

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this sixth edition of David J. Flinders and Stephen J. Thornton's ground-breaking anthology, the editors assemble the best in past and present curriculum studies scholarship. From John Dewey's nineteenth-century creed to Nel Noddings' provocative call to revive the spirit of the liberal arts, this thoughtful combination of well-recognized and pivotal work provides a complete survey of the discipline, coupled with concrete examples of innovative curriculum and an examination of current topics. New to this edition is a dynamic set of contemporary and historical contributions tackling issues such as high-stakes testing, multicultural literacy, white supremacy in the curriculum, and climate change. Carefully balanced to engage with the history of curriculum studies while simultaneously looking ahead to its future, The Curriculum Studies Reader continues to be the most authoritative collection in the field.Trade Review"This Reader is a beginning to study, not an ending. It invites readers to think carefully and, then, to join with colleagues in the construction of decisions about real curriculum questions in real schools for real students."—O. L. Davis, Jr., Catherine Mae Parker Centennial Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, The University of Texas at Austin"…will be of interest to all who want to know why we teach what we teach in schools."—Harvard Educational Review"The Curriculum Studies Reader (2017), edited by David J. Flinders and Stephen J. Thornton, provides a suitable introductory text through primary readings of theorists such as John Dewey, Maria Montessori, and W. James Popham, among others. The editors do well in the first half of the book in grouping contrasting arguments that provide context for understanding divergent ideologies of curriculum theory." —David L. Book SynopsisTeaching Music History with Cases introduces a pedagogical approach to music history instruction in university coursework. What constitutes a music-historical case? How do we use them in the classroom? In business and the hard sciences, cases are problems that need solutions. In a field like music history, a case is not always a problem, but often an exploration of a context or concept that inspires deep inquiry. Such cases are narratives of rich, complex moments in music history that inspire questions of similar or related moments. This book guides instructors through the process of designing a curriculum based on case studies, finding and writing case studies, and guiding class discussions of cases.Table of Contents1. Introduction 2. Case Study Curriculum Design 3. Selecting and Writing Cases 4. Class Discussion 5. Student Inquiry and Project-Based Learning 6. Assessment in the Case Study Classroom

  • Taylor & Francis Student Motivation in EnglishMedium Instruction

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores Japanese students' learning experiences and challenges in English medium instruction (EMI) frommotivational perspectives. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as the framework, the first part reveals a lack of the three psychological needs of SDT (autonomy, competence, relatedness) that cause loss of students' initial interest in learning English language and content. The author outlines pedagogical interventions that can be implemented in order to make the learning environment better. The second half of the book shows the effects these interventions had on the fulfillment of the three psychological needs, especially perceived relatedness and autonomy. In conclusion, the author focuses on the importance of listening to Japanese students' voices and building a community that can motivate students, thus maximizing the pedagogical effectiveness of EMI. This volume will be useful to anyone involved in motivation, language learning or EMI research, pedagogy or practice.Table of Contents1. Introduction 1. Why Motivation in EMI? 3. Two Faces of EMI Motivation: Learning English and Content 4. How do Japanese Students Feel in EMI Classrooms? 5. Pedagogical Interventions to Support Motivational Change in EMI 6. The Importance of Community in Enhancing Student Motivation 7. Conclusion

Book SynopsisScholarly Research in Music: Shared and Disciplinary-Specific Practices, Second Edition offers a comprehensive and detailed guide to engaging in research in all disciplines of music. This second edition continues to provide the foundational principles of research for all musicians, including performers, theorists, composers, conductors, music educators, and musicologists. It strengthens the core pedagogical framework of the first edition by offering updated guidance on available technologies, methodologies, and materials.Driven by the rapidly shifting research paradigms within music, sixteen contributors expand the already broad scope of the book, with new chapters on research in today's library, neurophenomenology in music, and self-efficacy in music performance, as well as new sections in chapters on philosophy, historical research, social science research, and statistics. Introducing research as a friendly and accessible process, the book engages students in brainTrade Review"This expanded and revised second edition continues to open windows to music research and scholarship, providing a comprehensive overview of research models and methods and a pathway to evolving new insights on music as behavior, idea, and value. None of the competing books offer the breadth of methodological perspective offered here."—Patricia Shehan Campbell, Donald E. Petersen Professor of Music, University of Washington"A welcome diversion from the many research methods texts that focus largely on resources, this friendly and exploratory approach provides a strong foundation for a wide variety of students. Both pragmatic and aspirational, it informs without condescending or oversimplifying. The attention the author pays to the needs of students makes me wish I could study with her."—Susannah Cleveland, Head of Music Library, University of North TexasTable of ContentsForeword (Janet L.
