Book SynopsisToward Sustainable Communities is the definitive guide to creating vibrant, healthy, equitable, and prosperous places. This completely revised 5th edition organizes community resources into 8 interrelated forms of capital, creating an innovative framework for maximizing social, economic, and environmental benefits.Trade ReviewRoseland, Stout, and Spiliotopoulou have masterfully woven together a comprehensive collection of abstract concepts and terminology from the realms of economics, social science, and urban planning in the fifth edition of Toward Sustainable Communities. Utilizing the helpful eight forms of Community Capital organizing framework, with clear illustrations and community-based examples, the authors have produced an essential text for all practitioners and students of sustainability planning. — Karla A. Ebenbach, Chair, American Planning Association Sustainable Communities Division, AICP, LEED Green Associate, President, Ebenbach Consulting LLC Using the compass as a foundation, Toward Sustainable Communities orients readers to an updated framework aligned with the ever-evolving field of sustainability science. Maintaining the three pillars as a back-drop, the text explores eight forms of community capital, each interconnected and dependent on the other. From defining key terms to describing sustainable development’s back story, it is essential reading for those new to the space and should be on the shelf of every practitioner as their go-to reference. — Hilari Varnadore, Vice President for Cities, U.S. Green Building Council Toward Sustainable Communities is the single most significant book of its kind. It demonstrates that the future we need can be achieved, and that the future we need can be a future we want. Toward Sustainable Communities is essential reading for everyone who wants a sustainable world, now and in the future. — Konrad Otto-Zimmermann, Secretary General, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability As any sustainability professional knows, the battle for sustainability will be won — or lost — in cities. After all, the way cities are designed and governed determines over 80 percent of its residents’ resource demand. There is no better guide than Mark Roseland, for showing us what’s possible so we can win this battle. Please give this book to every local official you know. — Mathis Wackernagel, Ph.D., President, Global Footprint Network Toward Sustainable Communities deftly situates community sustainability efforts in the broader policy arena and introduces the ‘community capital framework’ to advance a systems perspective that enhances our understanding of the complexities involved. The book provides a wealth of real-world examples and tools aimed at mobilizing citizens as well as governments. Developed and applied globally over the past twenty-five years by world renowned multi-disciplinary expert Mohan Munasinghe, sustainomics gives us an optimistic message: although our problems are serious, we can respond effectively by making development more sustainable, but only if we begin immediately. Book SynopsisIn theory, chemical-free sustainable agriculture not only has ecological benefits, but also social and economic benefits for rural communities. By removing farmers'' expenses on chemical inputs, it provides them with greater autonomy and challenges the status quo, where corporations dominate food systems. In practice, however, organisations promoting sustainable agriculture often maintain connections with powerful institutions and individuals, who have vested interests in maintaining the status quo. This book explores this tension within the sustainable farming movement through reference to three detailed case studies of organisations operating in rural India.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; 1. • Cambridge University Press Global Green Politics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn light of growing urgency in tackling the global environmental crisis, there is a need for new visions and strategies to ensure a more sustainable and just world. This book provides a comprehensive overview of Green perspectives on a range of global issues, including security, the economy, the state, global governance, development and the environment. Drawing on academic literature on Green political theory, combined with insights from real-world practice and the author''s own extensive personal experience, it provides a timely and accessible account of why we need to embrace Green politics in order to tackle the multiple crises facing the world today. Presenting alternative visions and concrete strategies for achieving change, this book will be of interest to activists and policy-makers as well as students of environment, development and politics.Trade Review'With young people on the streets and the climate emergency top of the political agenda, Green politics has never been more important. With everybody trying to steal the Greens' political clothes, a book that explains the role Green politics can play in ensuring a safe, sustainable and happy life for all global citizens is very timely.' Molly Scott Cato, Member of the European Parliament'Change can simmer for decades then happen overnight. Peter Newell has concentrated years of thought into a single, landscape-shaping publication which reveals the potential of Green politics and the perils of it remaining the poor relation of how we try to understand the world. He shows that, without a Green perspective, there can be no answer to our epochal challenges of conflict, inequality, migration and climate breakdown.' Andrew Simms, NewWeather Institute'Radical, ecologically oriented political perspectives have much to teach us about the study and practice of world politics. For the first time, Global Green Politics fully exposes the deep insights and essential lessons from these perspectives. Anyone who wants to understand why our global sustainability crisis is escalating, and what action is necessary, should rush to read Peter Newell's visionary book.' Peter Dauvergne, University of British Columbia'Accessible, timely and comprehensive, Peter Newell's latest book provides a lucid and thorough review of the various strands of Green politics and discusses how they might enrich the broader field of international relations. Most valuable is the insightful and pragmatic way that Global Green Politics offers a set of tools and frameworks that enable the systematic application of these perspectives to a range of key contemporary issues, including the economy, security and development. Overall, the book illuminates how Green politics can provide the conceptual frameworks, critical analysis, and practical strategies needed to address the severe challenges facing our societies and the planet.' David Levy, University of Massachusetts–Boston'Global Green Politics makes the case for international relations scholarship to take seriously Green politics … as an important critical normative and analytical approach to IR issues ranging from state security and sovereignty to 'globalisation' and international political economy. Against the backdrop of growing (if uneven) recognition of the scale and urgency of the changes necessary to meet the challenges and transformative opportunities of climate and ecological breakdown, Newell makes the persuasive case for the long overdue acknowledgement of the insights of Green political theory and political economy within IR thinking. Global Green Politics not only is the first comprehensive integration of Green political analysis and IR, but in doing so constitutes an invaluable and pioneering guide to how to think globally in the twenty-first century, and how to understand and navigate our uncertain and turbulent times.' John Barry, Queens University Belfast'At last, here is a critical introduction to global Green politics from one of the field's most versatile intellectual pioneers. Grounded in a deep appreciation of the inextricable interconnections between social and ecological systems, this book offers a clear normative vision, a penetrating critique of business and politics as usual and a set of practical strategies for sustainability transitions. Younger generations can now take heart!' Robyn Eckersley, University of Melbourne'Newell's incisive analysis brings a vital Green lens to the study of global politics that has been largely neglected by mainstream scholars of international relations. Global Green Politics provides powerful insights and critiques that arise from taking an expressly ecological perspective on humanity's most pressing global concerns.' Jennifer Clapp, University of Waterloo'In addition to its relevance for international relations, this volume provides a well-documented survey of the current state of green thought … In the end, Newell is convincing in arguing that an approach such as the one he lays out is needed if the global society is to ward off catastrophic collapse.' J. C. Berg, Choice'In addition to its relevance for international relations, this volume provides a well-documented survey of the current state of green thought … In the end, Newell is convincing in arguing that an approach such as the one he lays out is needed if the global society is to ward off catastrophic collapse.' Book SynopsisInternational institutions are prevalent in world politics. More than a thousand multilateral treaties are in place just to protect the environment alone, and there are many more. And yet, it is also clear that these institutions do not operate in a void but are enmeshed in larger, highly complex webs of governance arrangements. This compelling book conceptualises these broader structures as the ''architectures'' of global governance. Here, over 40 international relations scholars offer an authoritative synthesis of a decade of research on global governance architectures with an empirical focus on protecting the environment and vital earth systems. They investigate the structural intricacies of earth system governance and explain how global architectures enable or hinder individual institutions and their overall effectiveness. 2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe built environment is witnessing a worldwide concern followed by intensive consideration of its environmental impacts on the one hand and influence on public health and wellbeing on the other. Respecting both priorities mentioned above, the trends in current design tend to be in line with multiple dimensions of sustainability. Next to its occurrence in scientific research and practice, the topic of sustainable design is ever more emerging within the courses at universities, whereby the educational approaches can be beneficial if interrelated to different scientific or expert disciplines. As universities are recognized as complex organizations inevitably evolving over a long period of time period and responding to changes in society and environment, attempts to improve the efficiency of academic teaching have been intensively introduced also in the study programs of the University of Maribor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture (UM FGPA) through implementation of various activities related to development of innovative approaches towards education on sustainable design of built environment. The publication presents the interdisciplinary approach to the academic education on sustainable building design through integration of different activities. In addition to basic educational courses, the transfer of latest research findings, implementation of practical student workshops, development projects and various activities aiming at integration of different knowledge transfers makes the level of academic teaching more active and efficient. The book consists of six chapters. The first chapter describes the general aspect of the integrative approach to education on sustainable built environment through the experience of the interdisciplinary course. Chapter 2 introduces a comprehensive set of urban design criteria for creating residential neighbourhoods and emphasizes the role of high-quality open space and green areas, which significantly contributes to liveability. Chapter 3 deals with sustainable transport in connection with the living environment, and emphasises the interdisciplinary approach. Chapter 4 presents the inclusion of energy-efficient building design with the integrated use of new digital technologies, such as building information and energy modelling. Chapter 5 describes the main types of timber structural systems and presents a sustainable design perspective of contemporary prefabricated timber-glass buildings with further development of multi-storey prefabricated timber buildings with enlarged glazing areas. The last chapter is prepared as a graphic summary of interdisciplinary workshop projects which demonstrate the complexity of design and the respect for diverse interdisciplinary principles of sustainable planning.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Interdisciplinarity in Academic Education on Sustainable Built Environment; Creating a Liveable Neighbourhood; Sustainable Traffic and the Living Environment; Building Energy Modelling in Sustainable Design Process; Structural Design of Sustainable Timber Buildings; Application of Interdisciplinary Approach: Punkt Podlehnik Workshop; About the Authors; Index.

  • A Closer Look at Social Sustainability

Nova Science Publishers Inc A Closer Look at Social Sustainability

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisSocial sustainability, as an integral dimension of sustainability, means durability or perpetuity in social structure and function. Simply speaking, social sustainability engages recycling and waste reduction in social life. Such engagement necessarily requires social actions such as community development and care, volunteering, mutuality, and socialization or enculturation to maintain social integration, health, and culture. Community development consists in urban renewal and related aid, including volunteering and its organization for mutual care, particularly for elders. The care also transpires in public support for organ transplantation to rehabilitate precarious patients. Such social action crucially hinges on cultural or ethical orientations such as egalitarianism, paternalism, and Confucianism, notably in Chinese context. The social actions, its cultural bases, and social well-being together constitute social sustainability elaborated in this volume. Essentially, this volume presents original evidence based on unprecedented empirical research to reveal, consolidate, and advance theories and principles for social sustainability. The volume thereby elaborates and unpacks structural and functional mechanisms to achieve social sustainability. Such mechanisms are evident in the research to unravel six facets of social sustainability, namely, urban renewal, community integration, volunteering commitment, eldercare, kidney transplantation, and social value orientations. All these perpetuate social commitment, solidarity, and regeneration, and prevent social risks, losses, and breakdown.Table of ContentsPreface; Residents Reception of Aid and Support for Urban Renewal; Aiding Resettled Residents to Integrate into the Community; How Does Volunteer Enrollment Induce Older Adults Commitment to Volunteering?; Personal and Societal Influences on the Support of Chinese People for Institutional Eldercare Roles in the Community; Public Priority for Allocating Kidney Transplants; Social Value Orientations: Paternalism, Liberalism, and Egalitarianism; Index.

Book SynopsisSustainable development is all about integrating all of our present day needs with the needs of society, the environment and global citizenship, in a way that does not compromise future generations. Sustainable development also promotes equality, independence, collaboration and empowerment. By maintaining all of our resources and protecting nature so that future generations can also benefit, we encourage a sustainable society and for the environment to grow. Sustainable development has one main objective, which is to create balance between our social, environmental and economic needs, whilst maintaining equality and justice. The way in which we have chosen to live our lives in the recent past has been responsible for the damage that has been caused to the environment. We are polluting the Earth and consuming far more resources than we produce and are therefore damaging the development of future generations. This book has been prepared in order to provide details regarding Sustainable Development and what is behind Sustainability.

Or buy carbon offsets when you fly? Or recycle plastic? Go vegan? Or not have children? What if all these actions were a distraction, no matter how well-intentioned?In this provocative manifesto, Assaad Razzouk shows that for too long our ideas about what's best for the environment have been unfocused and distracted, trying to go in too many directions and concentrating on individual behaviour. While some of these things can be useful, they are dwarfed by one big thing that simply has to happen very soon if we're to avoid major environmental breakdown: curtailing the activities of the fossil fuel industry.Full of counter-intuitive statistics and positive suggestions for individual and collective action, this ingenious book will change how you view the climate crisis.Trade ReviewFast paced and energetic, this is a very readable book with myriad interesting facts... ultimately it is successful in forcing us to focus more sharply on the bigger picture * Financial Times *A real breath of fresh air. Punchy, provocative and wonderfully readable. Assaad Razzouk not only shares his knowledge and experience, he also allows his impatience to shine through. The result is exactly the kind of no-nonsense clarity that's too often lacking in the climate agenda. * David Shukman, former BBC News Science Editor *If you're in any doubt about the duplicity, the obfuscation and the lies - just the sheer extent of the fight being waged by Big Oil to keep us hooked on fossil fuels - Assaad Razzouk's eye-popping and essential book will sort you out. * Rowan Hooper, Podcast Editor, New Scientist *Saving the Planet Without the Bullshit is a refreshing and provocative look at what needs to happen to overcome the climate crisis. RIBA Publishing Energy / People / Buildings: Making sustainable

Book SynopsisEnergy performance feedback is an essential tool in addressing the current climate crisis. However, this is not simply another theoretical text about energy performance in buildings. This book is for anyone who wants to better understand how energy is used in buildings, and how to drive down operational energy use – whether you’re an architect, student, client, building services engineer, contractor, building operator or other stakeholder. Focusing on evidence from feedback on buildings in use, it explains what it takes to get them to perform as expected, as well as the reasons why they often fail. Energy, People, Buildings draws extensively on the findings of studies, UK government-funded building performance evaluations and on original research into seven case studies from across the UK and abroad that have achieved exemplary energy use through building performance feedback. Providing a clear roadmap to understanding aspects that impact building users’ comfort and satisfaction, it also outlines the factors behind energy use and how to track it across the life of a project to ensure that your building performs as intended. Case studies include: the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool; Rocky Mountain Institute Innovation Center, Colorado; and Carrowbreck Meadow, Norwich. Featured architects: AHMM, AHR, Architype, Hamson Barron Smith, Haworth Tompkins, Henning Larsen Architects and ZGF Architects.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsAbout the authorsForewordIntroduction Chapter 1 The challengeChapter 2 Design for peopleChapter 3 Energy basics and benchmarksChapter 4 Design for feedbackChapter 5 Building context and configurationChapter 6 Fabric firstChapter 7 Integrating technical systemsChapter 8 Control systems and user experienceChapter 9 Case study 1: Everyman Theatre, UK Case study 2: Morelands rooftop offices, UK Case study 3: Carrowbreck Meadow, UK Case study 4: Rocky Mountain Institute Innovation Center, USA Case study 5: Frederiksbjerg School, Denmark Case study 6: Kenysham Civic Centre, Library & Information Service, UK Case study 7: UEA’s Enterprise Centre, UKChapter 10 Contract for performanceConclusionReferencesGlossaryFurther readingIndexImage credits

Book SynopsisHumans are overexploiting nature, consuming too much energy, too many raw materials, too much land. In short, the current economic and living conditions of mankind, especially here in the West, are not sustainable.Who would disagree with this verdict? The evidence seems overwhelming: species extinction, rainforest deforestation, scarcity of raw materials, soil erosion, plastic waste, ecological footprint and, of course, climate change. But how reliable are these indicators? Are there perhaps also other indications, positive developments? And are all these problems of equal urgency? This book gives you answers: well-founded, comprehensible, to the point. It proves that the reports and headlines on ecological issues in the mainstream media are often one-sided, exaggerated and thus misleading. The book does not trivialize, but it differentiates. Using the relevant international reports and databases, it presents overall contexts where otherwise usually only individual, striking figures are picked out. With over 70 graphic illustrations, the book thus paints a new picture of the state of the planet and of the effects of human economic activity and consumption. At the end is a clear list of priorities for the real sustainability challenges - for humanity as a whole, and also for the people living in the West.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Part I - Three theses.- The most important challenge is: Switching from fossil to renewable energy sources.- "The Western way of economy and life is ecologically unsustainable" - not true.- It is worth fighting.- Part II - Basics.- World population.- Land use.- Food.- Drinking water.- Part III - Energy and raw materials.- Energy.- Raw materials.- Part IV - Ecological hotspots.- The "ecological footprint".- Biodiversity and species extinction.- Forest loss - Deforestation. The cases addressed in these contributions - including credit unions, alternative currencies, sustainable consumption, and social enterprises - deliver valuable insights into how such alternatives are performed at various scales and spaces in relation to and beyond the economic mainstream. In sum, the collection provides vital grounds for both a transition of the economic system towards a more sustainable one, and a reconceptualisation of the economic itself in our scholarly thinking and everyday lives.

Book SynopsisCultures as well as individuals continually balance the demands of nostalgia and sustainability as they construct historical narratives of "futures worth preserving". The aim of this volume is to explore those narratives and the underlying assumptions which inform them. Drawing on a range of disciplines from the humanities and social sciences, the chapters investigate cultural assumptions about which aspects of the past deserve to be remembered and which aspects of the present should be sustained for the future. In the process, they reveal how contemporary definitions of sustainability are informed by a nostalgic yearning for the past, and how nostalgia is motivated by a reciprocal longing to sustain the past for the future.Trade Review"What remains to be explored, and for which this edited volume has laid an important foundation, is the desire called utopia (sensu Fredric Jameson), its entanglement with values, its cultural manifestations across the globe, and its influence on concepts of nostalgia and sustainability." Book SynopsisThe big societal challenges, such as climate change and public health, call for innovative approaches to address them. The contributors of this book present new ways to tackle these challenges by inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations in light weight engineering. They introduce a framework for transdisciplinary collaboration, explore the potential of light weight engineering in the areas of climate protection, resource efficiency, and sustainable mobility. To do so, they exemplify results and limitations of transdisciplinary collaboration based on three case studies: the optimization of rescue tools, the re-design of products to foster re-use and recycling processes in companies and society, and the additive manufacturing of individualized assistive tools and prostheses.
