Book SynopsisA visual survey of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris over the past 850 years. Addresses a series of key themes in the cathedral’s history, including the fundraising campaign, the construction of vaults, and the liturgical function of the choir.Trade Review“Smaller, more concise, and more streamlined than a traditional monograph, it emphasizes a series of graphics developed from Tallon’s 3D-scan data, which together purport to show the development of Notre-Dame over the nine centuries of its history. In this way it helps to make the fruits of recent research on the cathedral’s history readily accessible to nonspecialist readers. The new translation undertaken by Lindsay Cook, who studied with both Murray and Tallon and whose own research considers parish churches constructed in the orbit of Notre-Dame, now effectively expands that mission to anglophone audiences.”—Robert Bork caa.reviews“With up-to-date scholarship and information from a laser scan now being consulted for the repairs of Notre Dame, this survey is at once authoritative and accessible, an important addition to the specialist and non-specialist libraries alike.”—Nancy Wu SpeculumTable of ContentsIntroduction 11163: Planning the CathedralThe BishopThe Cathedral ChapterThe FabricResourcesEpiscopal DonationsCapitular DonationsLay Donations1170: Building the CathedralThe MaterialsThe Master MasonThe DesignThe Construction1177: Constructing the VaultsThe VaultsTechnical Aspects of Vault ConstructionThe Space of the Choir1182: Liturgical Choir and SanctuaryThe Liturgical ChoirStaging the Ecclesiastical HierarchyThe Medieval Sanctuary1208: Form and MeaningThe ChoirThe Nave1220: Portals and the Gallery of Kings1225: Changing TastesA Radical TransformationThe ChangesInstability of the West Front1245: Towers and Bells, Marking Time at the CathedralThe Casting of a Bell1265: Relics and ProcessionsRelics and ReliquariesStational Liturgy and Processions1300: Pious Foundations and TombsThe Choir: Preserve of Prelates and PrincesThe ChapelsConfraternities at Notre Dame1350: A Point of ReferenceThe ArchitectsDirecting the Works1780: Baroque Transformations1860: The Major Restoration of Lassus and Viollet-le-DucNotre Dame in PerilThe Invention of French Cultural HeritageThe CompetitionThe ProjectThe RestorationThe Rational CathedralThe Cathedral TodayConclusionPlan of Notre DameGlossarySelected BibliographyCredits

Book SynopsisPalestinian theater today is drawing increasing interest throughout the Arab world and beyond, as theaters and universities in the English-speaking world are becoming familiar with companies like the Freedom Theatre, Al-Kasaba Theatre, Ashtar, Al-Rowwad, Yes Theatre, Al-Harah, and the Palestinian National Theatre. This volume for the first time presents contemporary plays from a number of Palestinian theatres in English. The collection offers a rare look into the dynamic life of contemporary Palestinian theater. The works gathered here arise directly from the physical and psychological realities of the occupation, combining activism and critical self-inquiry. The anthology represents both the micro-political geography and theatrical institutions of Palestine, covering the West Bank from the farthest north to the farthest south, the Galilee, Gaza, and Jerusalem. What emerges is the range of contemporary Palestinian national identity as expressed in the content, styles and institutions of its theater. As part of the In Performance series, the plays in this anthology will be of interest to those who want to produce new work, read diverse dramatic and performance literature, and understand the ways in which theater contributes to international discussions of culture, rights, history, and more.

Book SynopsisIn Remains of Socialism, Maya Nadkarni investigates the changing fates of the socialist past in postsocialist Hungary. She introduces the concept of remainsboth physical objects and cultural remaindersto analyze all that Hungarians sought to leave behind after the end of state socialism.Spanning more than two decades of postsocialist transformation, Remains of Socialism follows Hungary from the optimism of the early years of transition to its recent right-wing turn toward illiberal democracy. Nadkarni analyzes remains that range from exiled statues of Lenin to the socialist-era Bambi soda, and from discredited official histories to the scandalous secrets of the communist regime''s informers. She deftly demonstrates that these remains were far more than simply the leftovers of an unwanted past. Ultimately, the struggles to define remains of socialism and settle their fates would represent attempts to determine the futureand to mourn futures that never materializeTrade ReviewRemains of Socialism is an examination of 'mature' postsocialism that aptly demonstrates the ongoing disciplinary relevance of the region. Nadkarni offers her astute observations in clear, confident, accessible prose. * American Anthropologist *Multi-layered, intimate, and insightful on many levels, this remarkable and beautifully written book sets a new standard in the field of memory studies. * Association for Women in Slavic Studies *[Remains of Socialism] constitute[s] highly valuable contributions to the literature on the memory of the socialist past and the elements of nostalgia and retro in this memory. It is almost a hopeless endeavor to scrutinize her text for factual inaccuracies, misunderstandings, or mistranslations. • The Decisive Network

University of California Press The Decisive Network

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisSince its founding in 1947, the legendary Magnum Photos agency has been telling its own story about photographers who were witnesses to history and artists on the hunt for decisive moments. Based on unprecedented archival research, The Decisive Network unravels Magnum's mythologies to offer a new history of what it meant to shoot, edit, and sell news images after World War II. Nadya Bair shows that between the 1940s and 1960s, Magnum expanded the human-interest story to global dimensions while bringing the aesthetic of news pictures into new markets. Working with a vast range of editorial and corporate clients, Magnum made photojournalism integral to postwar visual culture. But its photographers could not have done this alone. By unpacking the collaborative nature of photojournalism, this book shows how picture editors, sales agents, spouses, and publishers helped Magnum photographers succeed in their assignments and achieve fame. Bair concludes in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when changing market conditions led Magnum to consolidate its brand. In that moment, Magnum's photojournalists became artists and their assignments oeuvres. Bridging art history, media studies, cultural history, and the history of communication, The Decisive Network transforms our understanding of the photographic profession and the global circulation of images in the predigital world.Trade Review"Ms. Bair’s book excels at revealing Magnum’s secret history as a supplier for companies eager to appropriate Magnum’s empathetic point of view." * Wall Street Journal *"In this impressively researched study of the early decades of Magnum, Nadya Bair uncovers the complex interactions of artistic ambition and business acumen that somehow produced a kind of order out of chaos. . . . • Encounters with a Radical Erasmus

University of Toronto Press Encounters with a Radical Erasmus

Book SynopsisAlthough Erasmus is now accepted as a harbinger of liberal trends in mainstream Christian theology, the radical - even subversive - aspects of his work have received less attention. Beginning with a redefinition of the term radicalism, Peter G. Bietenholz examines the ways in which the radical aspects of Erasmus' writings inspired radical reactions among sixteenth- and seventeenth-century readers.Bietenholz examines the challenges to orthodoxy in Erasmus' scholarly work on the New Testament and the ways in which they influenced generations of thinkers, including John Milton and Sir Isaac Newton. Turning to other aspects of Erasmus' writings, the author shows the ways in which his opposition to war encouraged radical manifestations of pacifism; how his reflections on freedom of thought and religious toleration elicited both warm approval and fierce rejection; and the ways his critical attitude helped foster the early modern culture of Scepticism. An engaging look at ErasTrade Review`With this work, University of Toronto Press continues its series of excellent studies on the fortuna of Erasmus in the early modern period.’ -- Jonathan Woolfson, The Historian: vol73:01:2011

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1975. This book fills a gap in the historical knowledge of wartime Yugoslavia. Focusing on the Chetnik movement provides a better understanding of the various ways that important segments of the population, including members of the Yugoslav officer corps and Serb civilians, perceived and responded to the occupation. The partisans' ultimate success does not conceal the fact that during the greater part of the war, several armed groups, owing at least some sort of allegiance to Mihailovic, chose very different courses of resistance. The overriding question for Milazzo is how a movement whose leadership was in no sense pro-Axis found itself progressively drawn into a hopelessly compromising set of relationships with the occupation authorities and the Quisling regime. What was it about the situation in occupied Yugoslavia and the Serb officers' response to that state of affairs that prevented them from carrying out serious anti-Axis activity or engaging in effectiveTable of ContentsPrefaceChapter 1. University of Toronto Press OnscreenOffscreen

Book SynopsisBased on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Onscreen/Offscreen is an exploration of the politics and being of filmic images. The book examines contestations inside and outside the Tamil film industry over the question "what is an image?" Answers to this question may be found in the ontological politics that take place on film sets, in theatre halls, and in the social fabric of everyday life in South India, from populist electoral politics and the gendering of social space to caste uplift and domination.Bridging and synthesizing linguistic anthropology, film studies, visual studies, and media anthropology, Onscreen/Offscreen rethinks key issues across a number of fields concerned with the semiotic constitution of social life, from the performativity and ontology of images to questions of spectatorship, realism, and presence. Book SynopsisArnold Krupat’s From the Boarding Schools makes available previously unheard Apache voices from the Indian boarding schools. It includes selections from two unpublished autobiographies by Sam Kenoi and Dan Nicholas, produced in the 1930s with the anthropologist Morris Opler, as well as material by and about Vincent Natalish, a contemporary of Kenoi and Nicholas. Natalish was one of more than one hundred Apaches taken from Fort Marion to the Carlisle Indian School by its superintendent, Captain Richard Henry Pratt, in 1887. A considerable number of these students died at the school, and many who were sent home for illness or poor health did not recover. Natalish, however, remained at Carlisle and graduated in 1899. He married, had a son, and lived and worked in New York. He also actively sought the release of his relatives and other Apaches held prisoner at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Apache people have been telling and circulating stories among themselves Trade Review“The federal Indian boarding schools are an increasingly important subject for both scholars and the general public. Apache autobiographical sources are rare, and so collecting them and making them available is an important contribution. University of Toronto Press The Bartering Mindset

Book SynopsisWe use money to solve our everyday problems, and it generally works well. Despite its economic benefits, however, money has a psychological downside: it trains us to think about negotiations narrow-mindedly, leading us to negotiate badly. Suggesting that we need a non-monetary mindset to negotiate better, The Bartering Mindset shows us how to look outside the monetary economy to the bartering economies of the past, where people traded what they had for what they needed. The book argues that, because of the economic difficulties associated with bartering, barterers had to use a more sophisticated form of negotiation a strategic approach that can make us master negotiators today. Now available in paperback, this book immerses readers in the assumptions made by barterers, collectively referred to as the bartering mindset, and then demonstrates how to apply this mindset to modern, monetary negotiations. Book SynopsisThe emergent science of transgenderism and related philosophies of gender propose a full-scale inversion of the understanding of God, man, and the created order articulated in classical metaphysics, undermining and parodying both the causality and ontology voiced by Genesis 1:27 (God created man in His own image,... male and female He created them.). Whether through subversive performative identity or by surgical sex change, the divinely made human person is now threatened with abolition and replacement by the self-made man and the man-made woman. In Metaphysics and Gender, Michele M. Schumacher offers a corrective to this distorted and distorting outlook, calling for the recovery of an anthropological vision rooted in recognition of the normative divine art of nature and of the likenessand far greater unlikenessbetween divine and human causality. This collection of essays responds to the apostle's call by providing both a diagnosis of the ills of modern progressivist Catholic doctrinal and moral theology and a prescription for the safeguarding of orthodoxy via a rightly understood return to the traditional sources of theology. The essays in the first part of this collection seek to answer the question, What went wrong with Catholic theology since the Second Vatican Council?. Following a brief account of the movement in modern theology from its philosophical basis in Kant and Hegel to the nouvelle théologie and later progressivist theologies of the twentieth century, the writings of Karl Rahner, Walter Kasper, and Bernhard Häring are treated as representative of principal problematic trends, and the concept of heresy is surveyed as

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Clusters of Innovation in the Age of Disruption

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is about innovation ecosystems, Clusters of Innovation (COI) and the Global Networks of Clusters of Innovation (GNCOI) they naturally form. What is innovation and why is it important to us? Innovation is nothing less than the ability for constructive response and adaptation to change. The cause and catalyst for that change is frequently identified as technology and its unceasing pressure to improve on existing solutions and address unmet needs. The last decade has painfully demonstrated that exogenous environmental shocks are also sources of change that call for innovative responses, ranging from the obvious challenges such as global warming and Covid-19 to the more subtle social and political perturbations of our time.Entrepreneurs, in collaboration with venture investors and major corporations can create a flywheel of constructive engagement, a cluster of Innovation, that helps build the resiliency of our communities to adsorb and rebound from these shocks. The process is enhanced when actively supported by government, universities, and other elements of the ecosystem. This book provides the tools for understanding this value creation process and the means to enhance it, in both emerging and mature innovation ecosystems. This book provides a framework for understanding innovation in mature and emerging innovation ecosystems to a wide swath of professionals and academics, from senior executives of major corporations, government leaders, public policy makers, and consultants, to academics, researchers, and educators.Trade Review‘Governments world-wide are seeking to encourage the growth of new ventures. Making this task harder is the fact that entrepreneurship is undoubtedly an “increasing returns” activity: the presence of nearby high-growth ventures increases the innovation and success of a new business. This volume presents a fascinating series of country-specific “case studies” that show the potential and challenges associated with growing entrepreneurial clusters.’ -- Josh Lerner, Harvard Business School, US‘Professor Jerome Engel has updated, expanded, and extended his Clusters of Innovation framework in this new book. There are fresh ideas about culture and behavior in these clusters. There are new regions included. And there is an extension to a non-geographic cluster built around a business model instead of a location. Anyone wishing to gain new insights into what makes the Silicon Valley cluster of innovation work will find this new volume an essential resource.’ -- Henry Chesbrough, University of California, Berkeley, US and Luiss University, Rome, Italy‘How do entrepreneurs, risk capital and corporate Innovation strategy come together to form an innovation cluster? Clusters of Innovation in the Age of Disruption provides a framework for understanding how this happens. This essential text updates the innovation cluster framework and provides a series of case studies on urban clusters and national strategies. Insightful, intuitive and intelligent – Clusters of Innovation in the Age of Disruption is a guide to creating value out of chaos.’ -- Steve Blank, Stanford University, USTable of ContentsContents: Foreword xv David J. Book SynopsisDutch artist Vincent van Gogh (18531890) was one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionist painters. Though much of his work, like this Irises study, is filled with brightness and light, Van Gogh's own life was filled with personal turmoil. Asevere mental health crisis, in which he now-famously cut off his own ear, prompted Van Gogh to admit himself to the Saint-Paul Asylum at Saint-Rémy in the south of France. His recuperation began with painting of the asylum garden, Irises chief among the resulting output.<#13>We are honoured to feature this seminal painting from the J. Paul Getty Museum in our collection.

Book SynopsisTeaching reading successfully requires deep knowledge of the reading process and development, as well as the implementation of impactful reading instruction and differentiation. This book aligns Montessori didactic materials and pedagogy, developed over a century ago, with current research on reading development.Trade Review"This book is clearly written and well-supported by concrete examples of materials and implementation strategies that are directly aligned with current research findings. It is especially useful for teachers in Montessori settings.
