It equips students with the vocabulary and tools to analyze the styles of others in fresh ways.Trade Review"In this innovative text, Holcomb and Killingsworth recapture style's rightful place in the generation of prose rather than just a step in editing already-written text. In the process, they manage to incorporate everything the Western rhetorical and literary tradition ever knew about style and have it all make sense together." - Barbara Johnstone, author of Discourse Analysis "Not only is this book smart and inspirational in terms of explanations, examples, and exercises, but it's also fun! • Aristotle and Other Platonists

Cornell University Press Aristotle and Other Platonists

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn a wide-ranging book likely to cause controversy, Lloyd P. Gerson sets out the case for the "harmony" of Platonism and Aristotelianism, the standard view in late antiquity.Trade ReviewThe title of this work indicates quite clearly where the author stands regarding the relationship of these two ancient philosophers: Aristotle, contrary to the usual thinking in the philosophical literature, is a Platonist. Gerson arrives at this position by examining in detail the writings of the Neoplatonists and others of the period and concluding that they were correct in assuming that there was no real conflict in the overall thinking of the two men and that, indeed, their thinking was 'harmonious.' * LIBRARY JOURNAL *Gerson examines the neglected work of the classical 'harmonists,' those Neoplatonic philosophers of late antiquity who sought to reconcile the opposing doctrinal positions of Platonism and Aristotelianism.... Although some of the harmonists' claims are dubious, Gerson does a fine job defending the essential points of their argumentation. This is an important book that should reshape readers' understanding of the history of classical philosophy. * Choice *A marvelous contribution to the study of ancient philosophy. -- Richard Kraut * Classical Philology *The paradigm of opposition between Plato and Aristotle is addressed by Gerson in his learned, fascinating, and persuasive book. -- Rosamond Kent Sprague * Ancient Philosophy *This is one of the most important and challenging books on Aristotle in recent memory. I think Lloyd Gerson is unlikely to persuade everyone of the truth of what he says. Nor perhaps will he convince anyone of the truth of all the things he says. But if this book does not succeed in disturbing some dogmatic slumbers, I will be very surprised and more than a little disappointed. I urge anyone who is feeling somewhat stifled by the status quo in Aristotle scholarship to take a good hard look at this book. Even if you disagree profoundly it will—and I think should—open your mind to some new possibilities. -- Dirk Baltzly * Bryn Mawr Classical Review *The inquiry is informed throughout with unsurpassed knowledge of the Platonic and Aristotelian texts and with analytical rigor that matches the best Aristotelian scholarship. This is a compelling study that deserves immediate attention from ancient philosophers who are willing to rethink these important questions. -- John Bussanich * Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *

St Augustine's Press Frankincense Gold and Myrrh

Book SynopsisFor over thirty years, Joseph Bottum has been writing widely acclaimed Christmas essays, columns, short stories, and carols for American magazines and newspapers. Now, for the first time, St. Augustine's Press has gathered a selection of these classic pieceswith a vast range across the Christmas spectrum. There's the comic: Tinsel. No one needs tinsel. Even the word is a tinselly kind of word. There's the sentimental: Her hair was the same thin shade of gray as the weather-beaten pickets of the fence around her frozen garden. There's the reminiscent: Christmas was books, and books Christmas, in those days now mostly washed down to the cold sea. Along the way, there's the theological, the learned, the mystical, and the musical. Tastefulness is just small-mindedness pretending to be art, he writes in praise of mad and cluttered holidays. Christmas will not be defined by our failures to apply its lessons and carols, he explains about Yuletide poetry. To see these essays and short stori

  • Inter-Varsity Press Sin Spirit Scripture

Book SynopsisSpiritual formation is critical for the Christian. And preaching is, effectively, spiritual formation from the pulpit, seeking to bring to bear the thrust of a portion of Scripture upon the lives of believers. However, a careful integration of the divine call for holiness with the concrete processes of life transformation in response to that divine call remains to be undertaken. How does the former lead to the latter, to culminate in Christlikeness? This book hopes to fill that gap, as it demarcates the problem (Sin), its solution (Spirit), and the application (Scripture). Abraham Kuruvilla informs and equips pastors, preachers and church leaders to to focus on God's work to overcome the sinful flesh in humanity through the agency of the Spirit and through the Spirit's product, Scripture. Hence, Sin, Spirit, and Scripture. This is not a model or plan of action, but rather an invitation towards being conformed to Christlikeness (Rom. 8:29-30).

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewKadman provides a description of the systematic process of obfuscation, concealment, and erasure of the ruined villages, and the creation of a new map—the Israeli national map, the map of the Jewish country standing upon the ruins of ancient Judea. . . . The publication of Kadman's book is a cultural event of the first rank. (Reviewing the Hebrew edition) -- Ariel Hirschfeld * Haaretz *Crucial reading for understanding the Arab-Israeli conflict. * Publishers Weekly *Erased from Space and Consciousness is a case study in how geography and demography interact, and how politics and ideology shape material reality, which in turn shapes public consciousness. * The Jordan Times *...An intelligent, well-researched and fluently translated book that casts new light on the ways in which the State of Israel and its institutions have tried to eradicate the memory of Palestinian habitation of Palestine and the social discourses and narratives which underpin this project. * Electronic Intifada *In an age when each side to this conflict staunchly holds to its narrative of the past, many Israelis are likely to regard Kadman's book as an unwelcome reminder of a part of that past they would like to disregard. For students of that history, however, this study adds an important layer to the story. . . . Highly recommended. * Choice *Until now, the evidence for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine has been available only through websites that record what happened . . . or general historical surveys. Now Kadman has provided an exhaustive treatment. And for historians, this will be the go-to-volume for years to come. * Christian Research Journal *[Kadman] has certainly established that any serious discussion of the future must acknowledge the depopulation of 1948 and counter the ongoing policies and practices of erasure and forgetting. If we don't know what happened, we can't understand what is happenning now or figure out what to do next. * Huffington Post *Kadman's meticulous account of the physical destruction and subsequent socio-cultural marginalization of the Palestinian villages that were depopulated by the militias that eventually merged into the Israeli Defense Forces makes significant scientific and political contributions. It also raises broader philosophical and epistemological questions with regard to the production, maintenance, and consequences of collective, politically institutionalized amnesia. * Antipode *This is an excellent book and an important contribution to the field of Israel-Palestine studies. * Reading Religion *Table of ContentsForeword by Oren YiftachelAcknowledgmentsNote on TransliterationList of AbbreviationsList of Foreign TermsIntroduction1. Appropriate for any interested reader as well as for the academic consumer, this volume presents a wealth of excellent information and is a marvelous read. * Nahua Newsletter *Hardly anyone who works with food history can afford to skip reading the New World staples and produce chapters, and once started on the book, won't want to stop anyway. Coe's story of the early New World civilizations and their encounters with Europeans is extraordinarily readable, interwoven with descriptions of food, how it was prepared and served, its significance to the people who ate it. Coe treats the New World people respectfully and with dignity, and at times the narrative is unbearably sad as it describes their conquest by the Spanish. * Food History News *Sophie Coe . . . was as rare in our time as her hero, Bernardino Sahagún, was in his: a culinary anthropologist who gave equal weight to both parts of that phrase.... However, despite the strong culinary thrust of the text, the 'discovery' of New World foods is an aspect of her story that—although extensively discussed—becomes. finally, almost beside the point. Her real subject is the tragic collision of two worldviews perhaps least likely to understand, let alone appreciate, each other. If mestizo culture remains as volatile and potent as a vinaigrette, it is because, even today, the two continue to coexist less like water and chocolate than oil and vinegar. * Cook Book *Table of Contents Preface Introduction 1. Book SynopsisWhen Norman Maclean sent the manuscript of A River Runs through It to New York publishers, he received a slew of rejections. One editor, so the story goes, replied, It has trees in it. Forty years later, the title novella is widely recognized as one of the great American tales of the twentieth century, and Maclean as one of the most beloved writers of our time. Maclean's later triumph, Young Men and Fire, has over the decades also established itself as a classic of the American West. And with this twenty-fifth-anniversary edition, a fresh audience will be introduced to Maclean's beautiful prose and understated emotional insights. A devastating and lyrical work of nonfiction, Young Men and Fire describes the events of August 5, 1949, when a crew of fifteen of the US Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after their jump, all but three of the men were dead or mortally burned.

  • Natures Portraits

The University of Chicago Press Natures Portraits

Book SynopsisWhen it comes to color, nothing can surpass the vast palette found in nature, from a bright green leaf in a sun-dappled forest to the rich red feathers of a cardinal and the muted greens, ambers, and browns that make up the shell of a tortoise. Wildlife artist Peggy Macnamara has been recreating the natural world through her drawings and paintings for decades, and, with Nature's Portraits, she invites the rest of the world to join her.Nature's Portraits offers sixty of Macnamara's detailed drawings that can be brought brilliantly to life with nothing more than a few colored pencils or crayons and a sense of wonder about the world around us. Many of the drawings depict animals as they might appear in their natural habitats like a tree frog, a dashing, playful fox, a snowy owl poised for flight, a sauntering jaguar, and a watchful herd of giraffe. These wild furry and feathered friends are joined by animals found in museums, including Sue, the Field Museum's resident Tyrannosaurus rex. Each illustration is captioned with a brief scientific description of the species pictured. Combining inspiration from natural history with a calming, creative activity, Nature's Portraits encourages us to take a closer look at what we miss when we don't take the time to stop and look with deep appreciation at the bounty of the natural world around us.

His criticism shows a nearly unequaled grasp of film history and technique, and formidable intellectual range, but [Ebert] rarely seems to be showing off. Book SynopsisWho was the greatest of all American guitarists? You probably didn't name Gary Davis, but many of his musical contemporaries considered him without peer. Bob Dylan called Davis one of the wizards of modern music. Bob Weir of the Grateful Deadwho took lessons with Davisclaimed his musical ability transcended any common notion of a bluesman. And the folklorist Alan Lomax called him one of the really great geniuses of American instrumental music. But you won't find Davis alongside blues legends Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite almost universal renown among his contemporaries, Davis lives today not so much in his own work but through covers of his songs by Dylan, Jackson Browne, and many others, as well as in the untold number of students whose lives he influenced. The first biography of Davis, Say No to the Devil restores the Rev's remarkable story. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with many of Davis's former students, Ian Zack takes readers through Davis's difficult beginning as the blind son of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South to his decision to become an ordained Baptist minister and his move to New York in the early 1940s, where he scraped out a living singing and preaching on street corners and in storefront churches in Harlem. There, he gained entry into a circle of musicians that included, among many others, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Dave Van Ronk. But in spite of his tremendous musical achievements, Davis never gained broad recognition from an American public that wasn't sure what to make of his trademark blend of gospel, ragtime, street preaching, and the blues. His personal life was also fraught, troubled by struggles with alcohol, women, and deteriorating health. Zack chronicles this remarkable figure in American music, helping us to understand how he taught and influenced a generation of musicians.

Book SynopsisOG Kush. Sour Diesel. Wax, shatter, and vapes. Marijuana has come a long way since its seedy days in the back parking lots of our culture. So has Howard S. Becker, the eminent sociologist, jazz musician, expert on deviant culture, and founding NORML board member. When he published Becoming a Marihuana User more than sixty years ago, hardly anyone paid attention-because few people smoked pot. Decades of Cheech and Chong films, Grateful Dead shows, and Cannabis Cups later, and it's clear-marijuana isn't just an established commodity, it's an entire culture. And that's just the thing-Becker totally called it: pot has everything to do with culture. It's not a blight on culture, but a culture itself-in fact, you'll see in this book the first use of the term users, rather than abusers or addicts. Come along on this short little study-now a famous timestamp in weed studies-and you will be astonished at how relevant it is to us today. Becker doesn't judge, but neither does he holler for legalization, tell you how to grow it in a hollowed-out dresser, or anything else like that for which there are plenty of other books you can buy. Instead, he looks at marijuana with a clear sociological lens-as a substance that some people enjoy, and that some others have decided none of us should. From there he asks: so how do people decide to get high, and what kind of experience do they have as a result of being part of the marijuana world? What he discovers will bother some, especially those who proselytize the irrefutably stunning effects of the latest strain: chemistry isn't everything-the important thing about pot is how we interact with it. We learn to be high. We learn to like it. And from there, we teach others, passing the pipe in a circle that begins to resemble a bona fide community, defined by shared norms, values, and definitions just like any other community. All throughout this book, you'll see the intimate moments when this transformation takes place. You'll see people doing it for the first time and those with considerable experience. You'll see the early signs of the truths that have come to define the marijuana experience: that you probably won't get high at first, that you have to hold the hit in, and that there are other people here who are going to smoke that, too.
