Book SynopsisThis cover is inspired by an original design attributed to Le Gascon, a legendary but little-known 17thcentury bookbinder. Le Gascon was the inventor of the pointillé and fanfare styles, and his influence is felt throughout the rich bookbinding history that follows him.<#13>If this cover was not created by Le Gascon, it is certainly in his style and was made by another French master. Le Gasconstyle bindings first appeared near the end of the reign of Charles IX and were revered for the sophistication and intricacy of their ornamentation. Le Gascon's fanfare bindingsfeatured gilt decoration that spread out in repeated fanfare patterns, as well as pointillé tooling bordered by bands.<#13>The original cover was made of red morocco leather embossed and gilded with rosettes, spirals anddotted lines. Book SynopsisThe art of still life painting is a celebrated part of Dutch culture, but this time-honoured artistic style didn't develop from thin air. Before still life emerged, there were illustrators who delicately illuminated handwritten manuscripts with images of flora and fauna to add emotional power to a written work.<#13>One of the most celebrated practitioners of this style was Joris Hoefnagel (15421601). Hoefnagel, apivotal artistic figure from the Netherlands, is remembered as being the last important Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to work on the new genre of still life. In the 1590s theEmperor Rudolf II commissioned Hoefnagel to add his illuminations to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a mid-16th-century manuscript on the art of calligraphy by Georg Bocskay. Criticized for what was perceived as an “effeminate nature” and oppressed by a largely homophobic world, Wilde remained resilient. Book SynopsisThis glorious design comes from Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a world-renowned British bindery best known for their bejewelled cover of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat. Established in London in 1901, Sangorski & Sutcliffe quickly rose to become one of the 20th century's most important bookbinders. They were especially celebrated for their jewelled bindings, like the one reproduced here. Originally crafted in 1922 to house Rudyard Kipling's 1897 Recessional poem written for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it incorporated real turquoise, aquamarine and ruby gemstones, alongside medieval-style illumination by Alberto Sangorski and gold tooling by George Sutcliffe.
