Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Footballization of China: Strategies for
Book SynopsisIn this unique book, Sten Söderman explores the prospect of China reaching its goal of hosting the 2050 World Cup. Söderman takes into consideration China’s size, resources, traditions and political system to ask what needs to be done and how.The book assesses football in China today, discussing the main driving forces behind the development of football in China, and offering an analysis of its organizational structure, strengths, regulations, and weaknesses. Taking a comparative approach, Söderman asks if China should simply adopt the European model of football, including values and skills, through imported players and coaches, or if it is better for China to forge its own path by building on its traditions and limiting the possibility of investing in foreign players, coaches and foreign football clubs. Looking to the future, the book outlines new models and tools to analyse the footballization of China. Söderman concludes with the argument that grassroots activity is the most critical factor in the development of football in China.Examining if a strategic management mix will help China win the 2050 World Cup, this book will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of sport management and Asian business studies.Trade Review‘Football in China has always been something of an enigma, especially over the last decade. Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Beautiful Moves: Designing Stadia
Book SynopsisEduardo Galeano, Uruguayan writer, once pleaded for `a pretty move for the love of God' when watching his beloved soccer. This book is likewise interested in `beautiful moves', but turns instead to the architecture of the stadium as an architectural type as captivating as the play occurring on the pitch. In the past 30 years a number of stadium projects have been completed that highlight how this building type has become a site for architectural innovation and complexity. Clients that once would once have turned to large firms specializing in stadia instead began to hire A-list and Pritzker-Prize-winning architects to design new stadia. As a result, in cities around the world stadia are often the most expensive and monumental of projects, and may be icons of identity and defining presences in the built landscape. By examining a range of exemplary stadia from around the world (built, unbuilt and demolished projects), this book presents for the first time a canon for this building type. Organized chronologically, it includes famous examples from the likes of Lina Bo Bardi, Frei Otto, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Herzog & de Meuron, Foster + Partners and Studio Gang.Table of ContentsIntroduction. Chapter 1: 1960: The Postwar Stadium and the City. Chapter 2: 1970: The Rise of the High Tech Mega Project. Chapter 3: 1980: Decline and Disaster. Chapter 4: 1990: The Postmodern Stadium. Chapter 5: 2000: The Starchitect and the Stadium. Chapter 6: 2010: Stadia Worlds. Conclusion: Stadia of the Future

Taylor & Francis Ltd Sport Psychology: Performance Enhancement,
Book SynopsisSport Psychology, 2nd Edition provides a synthesis of the major topics in sport psychology with an applied focus and an emphasis on achieving optimal performance. After exploring the history of sport psychology, human motivation, and the role of exercise, there are three main sections to the text: Performance Enhancement, Performance Inhibition, and Individuals and Teams. The first of these sections covers topics such as anxiety, routines, mental imagery, self-talk, enhancing concentration, relaxation, goals, and self-confidence. The section on Performance Inhibition includes chapters on choking under pressure, self-handicapping, procrastination, perfectionism, helplessness, substance abuse, and disruptive personality factors. While much of the information presented is universally applicable, individual differences based on gender, ethnicity, age, and motivation are emphasized in the concluding section on Individuals and Teams.Throughout, there are case studies of well-known athletes from a variety of sports to illustrate topics that are being explored.Trade Review"The book is thorough with a very large range of topics covered, some being particularly unique compared to other textbooks. There seems to be an increasing awareness within the field of factors that inhibit performance, rather than a sole focus on performance enhancement, and this new edition captures this shift rather well. Within the performance enhancement chapters that do have some overlap with other textbooks, Professor Gallucci conveys a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding these topics, which is a welcome advancement within the field." - Ian Taylor, Loughborough University, UK, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Science"I am very surprised and pleased with the way sport psychology is presented in this book. It appears to be a very thorough from an academic standpoint, while at the same time keeping an overall focus on what’s relevant to practice. I very much appreciate that this book has a thought-out format for how topics interact and should be addressed in practice. Most books use chapter titles that are issues, constructs, interventions with no organizing philosophy for their inclusion or order. This is a sport psychology book that truly relates to performance." - Steve Portenga, University of Denver, Sport and Performance Psychology"This is a well-written book that will be of interest to athletes and coaches interested in improving their understanding of sport psychology and their own psychological approach to sport. Current theory and research in the psychological factors are discussed, and these are explained in a very readable manner." - Rafael E. Romo, Texas A&M International University, Curriculum and Pedagogy"I think the material is great; the chapters are thorough, I like the progression in many of the chapters from general information to more sport-specific examples. There is a good balance of theory to application and strong examples to help students see these concepts 'in action' which students often find interesting and helpful." - Professor Karlene Sugarman, Sport Psychology Program, John F. Polaris Publishing Limited Fergie Rises: How Britain’s Greatest Football
Book SynopsisFULLY REVISED AND UPDATED 'The finest Fergie book of them all' – Tom English, BBC Sport When Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of the 2013 season he was the most successful football manager Britain had ever seen, having won twice as many trophies as his nearest rival. But that success had not come easily. Thirty-five years previously he had arrived at the rain-swept training ground at Aberdeen F.C. as the recently sacked manager of St Mirren. Already a divisive figure, this Alex Ferguson came with a reputation for trouble and a lot still to prove. Not for nothing, many thought he was a risky choice. Fergie Rises returns to a time when Ferguson was lucky to get Aberdeen, not the other way around. It's the story of an eight-year revolution that saw the Dons and their ambitious young manager knock the Old Firm off their perch, taste victory in Europe for the first time, and electrify Scottish football. When Ferguson finally left the club for Manchester United, in 1986, fans and rivals were unanimous in believing he had engineered one of the most astonishing upheavals in the game’s history. The author also examines the personal tragedies Ferguson overcame – the deaths of his father and his mentor Jock Stein – and the rivalries, setbacks and triumphs that shaped a sporting genius. 'A masterful retelling of how Ferguson was "made" at Aberdeen' – Alan Pattullo, The ScotsmanTrade Review‘It might be a familiar story – of course it is – but this book brings it alive with fresh interviews, rich in detail and anecdote. It is a brilliant read. A must for all Dandies' -- Graham Spiers * The Times *'The finest Fergie book of them all. It takes you to the heart of the magnificent absurdity of Aberdeen being kings of Europe' -- Tom English * BBC Sport *'The glut of books on Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United Revolution is exactly why this one is so interesting. A neat idea by an author whose account is superbly written' * The Scotsman 'Best Scottish sports reads' *'This is a book that takes the evidence from a series of witnesses to burgeoning genius. The testimonies are stunning, insightful, sometimes bitter, mostly awed and regularly funny' * The Herald *'Having interviewed many of those under Fergie’s Pittodrie stewardship, he brings much fresh insight into a period covered too briefly in his autobiography' * FourFourTwo *'The most fascinating part of Alex Ferguson’s career is his eight years taking Aberdeen from no-hopers to beating Real Madrid in a European Final. All the greatest stories have a beginning and this is it' * Shortlist *'An excellent new tome' -- Stephen McGowan * Scottish Daily Mail *'A masterful re-telling of how Ferguson was "made" at Aberdeen' -- Alan Pattullo * The Scotsman *'It is Grant's own passion that permeates and defines Fergie Rises and makes it the book that all of us would have loved to have written' -- David Innes * Aberdeen Voice *'Grant has painted a vivid tableau of a bygone age on a giant-sized canvas' -- Neil Drysdale * STV Aberdeen *'Such a fantastic book. A great story in itself as well as brilliant insight into Sir Alex and his then still evolving management style. Highly recommended' * Sports Book Reviews *

Fitness Information Technology, Inc, U.S. Effective Coaching for All Athletes within Youth
Book SynopsisThis book is written for youth sport coaches, the individuals who volunteer their time to teach young athletes the fundamentals of a given sport, as well as the skills needed to work as a team. In writing this book, we recognize that children who enroll in recreational sports have a variety of experiences and skills, and thus this book seeks to provide coaches with a foundational structure and methods to provide effective instruction for all athletes. Within any given team, young athletes have varied skills that range from novice to competent and providing the same activities for all will result in frustration for some of your athletes, either because they do not possess certain prerequisite skills or because they have reached mastery and become bored. It is our goal to provide easy-to-use, practical tools to not only prevent this frustration but to help create an environment that encourages mastery and fun for all, including you, the coach. This book includes information on accessible coaching for teams that may consist of young athletes with learning disabilities, behavioral disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as athletes without disabilities. Effective Coaching includes topics such as effective organization, design of practice environments, communication with families, efficient and feasible progress monitoring, and chapters targeted toward common youth sport programs (e.g., soccer, t-ball, indoor hockey, basketball, flag football, lacrosse, and volleyball).

The soccer club has more trophies than any other sports team, including 11 UEFA Champions League trophies. However, the story behind the triumph goes beyond the players and coaches. Generally unnoticed, a management team consisting mostly of outsiders took the team from near bankruptcy to the most valuable sports organization in the world. How did Real Madrid achieve such extraordinary success? Columbia Business School adjunct professor Steven G. Mandis investigates. Given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, Mandis is the first researcher to rigorously ana- lyze both the on-the-field and business aspects of a sports team. What he learns is completely unexpected and challenges the conventional wisdom that moneyball-fueled data analytics are the primary instruments of success. Instead, Real Madrid's winning formula both on and off the field, from player selection to financial management, is based on aligning strategy with the culture and values of its fan base. Chasing the most talented (and most expensive) players can be a recipe for a winning record, but also financial disaster, as it was for Real Madrid in the late 1990s. Real Madrid's management believes that the club exists to serve the Real Madrid community. They discovered that its fans care more about why the team exists, how their club wins, and whom it wins with versus just winning. The why, how, and whom create a community brand and identity, and inspire extraordinary passion and loyalty, which has led to amazing marketing and commercial success--in turn, attracting and paying for the best players in the world, with the values the fans expect. The club's values and culture also provide a powerful environment for these best players to work together to win trophies. The Real Madrid Way explains how Real Madrid has created and maintains a culture that drives both financial and on-the-field success. This book is an engrossing account of the lifetime of one of the greatest clubs in the most popular sport in the world, and for business and organization leaders, it's an invaluable inside look at a compelling alternative model with lasting competitive advantages that can deliver superior and sustainable returns and performance.Trade Review"This book will be one of the most influential books on sports ever written. It doesn't matter if you are a soccer or Real Madrid fan, you will look at sports and business in a different way after reading this book." --Billy Beane, executive vice president of baseball operations and minority owner of the Oakland Athletics "The fact that Steven Mandis was given complete access into the inner sanctum of the richest football [soccer] club in the world testifies to the trust Real Madrid placed on Steven's head, which is quite amazing. This is the definitive, comprehensive survey on the essential workings of this famous club. It is an eye-opening account, clinical and done with a sensitive touch." --Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United 1986-2013 "With unprecedented behind-the-scenes access, this book is the most complete study of any sports team ever done, analyzing both on the field and off the field performance-- which leads to fascinating conclusions." --David Stern, NBA commissioner emeritus "The book magisterially penetrates through all the mystique of Real Madrid, football [soccer] and sports. This is the ultimate look behind the regal velvet ropes and steel curtains both in the boardroom and locker room at the most successful and valuable team in sports, Real Madrid." --Ray Hudson, soccer commentator for beIN Sport, retired English professional soccer player, and former MLS coach "This book expands on and challenges aspects of Soccernomics and The Numbers Game because of Mandis's access and organizational considerations and reexamines and questions facets and applications of Moneyball." --Francisco Perez Cutino, whose graduate research at Cambridge University is referenced in Soccernomics "This is much more than a book about a soccer team. If you love the NFL, MLB, or NBA, this book is a must-read because it will change the way you view your favorite team." --Geoff Pope, cornerback for 2008 New York Giants, XLII Super Bowl Champions "No Real Madrid book, or sports book for that matter, has ever been written like it. Mandis's unique background in business and academics and outsider's perspective produces an essential book for any Madridista's library collection." --Gabe Lezra, founder and editor-in-chief emeritus of ManagingMadrid.com "The Real Madrid Way delivers ground-breaking insights about the success formula for a legendary sports franchise. An in-depth exploration of organization culture provides a great balance to the role of sports analytics and makes this a must-read leadership book for anyone interested in sports management." --Vince Gennaro, director of the Masters of Science in Sports Management program at Columbia University, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and president of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) "Mandis explains the incredible power of community brands--where a global community feels so deeply passionate about the brand that the brand is synonymous with one's identity, values and much more." --Andrew Messick, CEO of IRONMAN "The Real Madrid Way explains how Real Madrid has created and maintained a culture that drives both financial and on-the-field success. An educational and inspiring example for sports fans and executives alike." --Lindsay McGregor and Neel Doshi, cofounders of Vega Factor and New York Times bestselling coauthors of Primed to Perform: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation "Mandis has created a gripping narrative exploring how Real Madrid has done the seemingly impossible: used a strong culture and shared values to overcome the problem of the too-much-talent effect. The book is a must for anyone interested in culture, leadership, and high performance." --Adam Galinsky, chair and Vikram S. Book SynopsisThis book takes a deep dive into the factors that lead to countries’ success in elite sport. While some researchers have suggested looking at the political, economic, demographic, geographic and cultural characteristics of a country, other scholars have advocated that meso-level strategies such as financial support, governance, and talent identification systems are the factors that need to be taken into consideration. Taking into account the two sides of this debate, the authors review and evaluate these various components. They go on to use this review to propose a new holistic framework of analysis that includes the macro, meso and micro-level factors that lead to national success in elite sport. This is a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in sport management, particularly the subject of sport governance. In addition, sports consultants and policymakers will find this to be an eye-opening read.Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1. NIAS Press Nation, City, Arena: Sports Events, Nation
Book SynopsisIn 1962, Indonesia celebrated its national rebirth, modernity and international arrival by hosting the 4th Asian Games in Jakarta. Since then, Indonesia has hosted several other major multi-sport events as well as numerous tournaments in a single sport. But the return to Jakarta in 2018 of the 18th Asian Games was significant: for the first time in the history of the Games, they were co-hosted: Palembang, capital of South Sumatra, staged the event together with Jakarta. These arrangements - and their success - reflected a new reality in Indonesia; the Jakarta-centric, one-nation autocracy of the New Order regime has been replaced by regional autonomy, local agency, and evolving center-periphery relationships. With heightened inter-city rivalry, greater attention is paid to marketing cities and regions than ever before. Palembang exemplifies this civic transformation. A once grimy industrial backwater has become an attractive regular fixture in the international sporting calendar. In part this has been achieved by urban renewal and targeted construction projects but equally important has been a coherent strategy adopted by local leaders and officials to promote Palembang as Indonesia's sports city and make it not just a prime sporting venue but also a sports tourism destination. In her new study, Friederike Trotier draws on the examples of Palembang and Jakarta to map the evolution of Indonesia's sporting history, then uses her analysis as a lens to reflect on the country's transformation since 1998. Here, she considers political aspirations and changes, power structures and global influences in the host country and its cities. She also scrutinizes the role of sports events in relation to national and local politics and links them to the increase in city marketing, local agency and inter-city competition in post-Suharto Indonesia. A key argument is that sports events reflect the country's development in the past two decades from being nation-centric - where Jakarta had a dominant place - to being far more decentralized; here, in the new structure of regional autonomy, cities have a heightened role as arenas of representation. The result is an impressive revisualization of Indonesia's recent sociopolitical transformation.
