    5 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the #1 New York Times bestselling book Courage to Soar, US Olympic gymnast Simone Biles presents the story of how she overcame early childhood challenges to become the only female gymnast to ever win three consecutive World Championship titles in her official autobiography.Trade ReviewNineteen-year-old Biles, Olympic gold medalist and the most decorated U.S. gymnast of all time, takes readers along her journey to the podium in this memoir. After spending her early childhood in and out of foster care, Biles was adopted by her biological grandparents. She began her gymnastics training at the age of six after a field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastix, where the coaches quickly discovered that she “had what it took to go all the way.” Biles describes not only her gymnastics training and career but also her personal life, including her grandmother’s death, the difficult decisions she made in order to balance school and gymnastics, her “bratty period” in her early teens, and her love for her car, with its zebra-print interior. In recent years, Biles has won three consecutive world championship titles followed by her team gold and individual wins at the 2016 Olympics. Biles’s narration is effervescent, showing her to be, as her brother says, “a goofy and down-to-earth kid.” The tone is conversational and includes casual phrases such as “if you can’t already tell” and “just kidding.” She expresses appreciation for her family, friends, teammates, and coaches and frequently credits God and her faith for her success. One slight caveat: readers without background knowledge about gymnastics may not find the terminology to be adequately explained. VERDICT Essential for libraries serving tween and teen gymnastics fans.–Magdalena Teske, Naperville Public Library, IL * School Library Journal *

Book SynopsisA classic of mountaineering literature, this is the story of the harrowing first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger, the most legendary and terrifying climb in history.Heinrich Harrer, author of Seven Years in Tibet' and one of the twentieth century's greatest mountaineers, was part of the team that finally conquered the Eiger's fearsome North Face in 1938. It was a landmark expedition that pitted the explorers against treacherous conditions and the limits of human endurance, and which many have since tried and failed to emulate.Armed with an intimate knowledge that comes only from first-hand experience of climbing the Eiger, Harrer gives a gripping account of physical daring and mental resilience. A new introduction by Joe Simpson, author of Touching the Void', confirms the lasting relevance of this true adventure classic.Trade Review‘An outstanding book in the mountaineering library.’ Guardian ‘Even to look at the photographs of the terrible slopes of the Eiger chills the blood. Heinrich Harrer enables the reader to vicariously experience the cold and the terror of the climb.’ Irish Press ‘”The White Spider” provides almost the classic statement of the weird and frequently misunderstood psychology of the modern rock-climber. Despite the grimness of much of what he is doing, Harrer communicates the irresistible joy of climbing as an antidote to the idea that climbers are masochistically trying to prove something to themselves.’ Sunday Times ‘A true classic from the early days of mountaineering…The terror and respect that the Eiger inspires is evoked superbly in Harrer’s narrative.’ Maxim

  • The Optimist: A Case for the Fly Fishing Life

Simon & Schuster The Optimist: A Case for the Fly Fishing Life

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn “excellent” (The New York Times) modern tribute to an ageless pastime, and a practical guide to the art, philosophy, and rituals of fly fishing, by an expert, lifelong angler. In The Optimist, David Coggins makes a case for the skills and sensibility of an enduring sport and shares the secrets, frustrations, and triumphs of the great tradition of fly fishing, which has captivated anglers worldwide. Written in wry, wise, and keenly observed prose, each chapter focuses on a specific place, fish, and skill. Few individuals, for example, have the visual acuity required to catch the nearly invisible bonefish of the Bahamas flats. Or the patience to land the elusive Atlantic salmon, “the fish of a thousand casts,” in eastern Canada. Pursuing these challenges, Coggins, “a confirmed obsessive,” travels to one fishing paradise after another, including the great rivers of Patagonia, private chalk streams in England, remote ponds in Maine, and New York City’s Jamaica Bay. In each setting, he chronicles his fortunes and misfortunes with honesty and humor while meditating on how fishing teaches focus, inner stillness, and a connection to the natural world. Perfect for the novice, the enthusiastic amateur, and the devoted angler alike, The Optimist offers a practical path to enlightenment while providing “a rueful, thoughtful, and very funny examination of an elegant obsession” (Jay McInerney).Trade Review“Anyone interested in fly fishing or curious how the sport could possibly be of interest to anyone should hop to David Coggins’s excellent The Optimist." —The New York Times “This is a wonderful book but to be honest, Coggins writes so well that he could rivet our attention to anything—cottage cheese, Ted Cruz, the Detroit Lions—and we would follow every sentence with remarkable obedience." —Thomas McGuane, author of The Longest Silence "Coggins' keen observations of this genteel pursuit are offered with humor, a dash of wisdom, and an enthusiasm so infectious you'll be itching to perfect your backcast between chapters." —Fortune Magazine, "Best Books of 2021" "Humorous and relatable. . . . A great read for fly fishing enthusiasts and novices alike." —Flylords “David Coggins is a pro, and his book is smart and aware and generous, the writing elegant, the humor tucked in just the right places." —TROUT Magazine “Immersive, true, pitch-perfect, and a soon-to-be classic. Coggins is a fresh voice in the fly-fishing canon, a wry genius, and the perfect guide for angler and non-angler alike.” —Chris Dombrowski, author of Body of Water “Lively, humoristic but informative. . . . [Coggins is] a talented and entertaining writer." —Atlantic Salmon Journal "[The Optimist] makes a nice philosophical case for fly fishing." —GQ "An entertaining read and intelligent resource for anglers and non-anglers alike. . . . At the height of his literary talents, the author ultimately reveals a healthy approach to angling--and to life in general." —Virginia Sportsman “To paraphrase an old saying: Writing about fly fishing is like dancing about architecture. It's nearly impossible to capture but David Coggins does it as well as anyone, and I thrilled to his adventures from England to Patagonia to America's great rivers.” —Tom Rosenbauer, author of The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide “I’ve fished many of the rivers in this book but I hadn’t seen them run and shimmer the way they do in Coggins’s lively prose. What’s more, I’d given up on fishing, I don’t know why—maybe the world was too much with me; okay, let’s just say I’ve been preoccupied with ephemera rather than the eternal, which is what fly-fishing makes one confront. I closed this last chapter and said hell or high water, I was going to get back to the rivers and streams I’ve missed. There’s much to fall in love with in this world, and this book reminded me of that.” —Doug Stanton, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Horse Soldiers “The Optimist is a rueful, thoughtful and very funny examination of an elegant obsession. Coggins does a terrific job of evoking the joys of fly fishing and also the frustrations, which are inextricably linked. This is the best book I’ve read on fishing since Thomas McGuane’s The Longest Silence.” —Jay McInerney “Wonderfully written, consistently amusing, grand but never grandiose.” —Lesley M.M. Blume, author of Fallout “An excellent primer for the beginning fly angler and a lyrical reminder of all there is to love about the sport for even the most jaded of old hands.” —Monte Burke, author of Lords of the Fly and Saban “A wise, affectionate chronicle of a passion pursued.” —Kirkus Reviews "Coggins is a virtuoso. He has written a modern fly fishing classic." —Oppstrøms “A pure and extended love letter to fishing. . . . what grows on you and ultimately stays with you while reading The Optimist is his sheer exuberance and honesty. The real brotherhood of fishing might occasionally be about fishing triumphs, but just as often if not more, it is about failures. And we get streamside seats to all of Coggins’s." —The Washington Free Beacon "A lovely, ruminative book about a venerable sport. . . . Coggins’s enthusiasm for fly fishing is so infectious that the book will readily hook non-fishers as well.” —Library Journal

The book features fresh reporting on almost every significant element of Woods' story.' -- Sam Weinman * Golf Digest *'Immensely readable...the authors have laid out a saga that is part myth, part Shakespeare, part Jackie Collins, plus a touch of ESPN... Book SynopsisThe Regent's Canal, the Limehouse Cut, the Hertford Union and the Lee Navigation collectively cut a swathe through north and east London. This 14-mile path, cycle and waterway is a journey full of intriguing contrasts: - From the amateur sports fields of Regent's Park to London's new Olympic Park. - From the studio where Hitchcock directed some of his early films to MTV in Camden Lock. - From fine period housing to industrial wasteland, social housing and new canalside builds. - From the pleasure boats chugging to Camden to the sleek Eurostars roaring off to Paris. The use of canals has changed dramatically over the past fifty years from one of industrial transportation to waterfront living and leisure activities. The canals in this book have undergone major phases of rebirth with new developments at King's Cross, Limehouse and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Newham. Illustrator and writer David Fathers offers a snapshot of how the canals were formed and how they appear today, in a series of arresting and information-packed pages following a course from Little Venice to the River Thames at Limehouse, and on to the Olympic Park.Table of ContentsIntroduction Little Venice Maida Vale Maida Tunnel Lisson Grove Regent’s Park London Zoo John Nash Cumberland Spur Pirate Castle Camden Lock Camden Town Elm Village St Pancras King’s Cross Battlebridge Basin Islington Tunnel City Road Basin Thomas Homer De Beauvoir Haggerston Victoria Park Hertford Union Canal Mile End Mile End Park Limehouse The Thames Limehouse Cut Bow Locks Three Mills River Lee Navigation Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Acknowledgements Bibliography

  • Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai

Shambhala Publications Inc Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA foremost scholar of samurai texts approaches this martial arts classic as a meditation on the Zen concept of “death of the ego”—offering a fresh translation unlike any other. Discover what it takes to be a samurai with the 18th-century martial arts treatise that delves into minds of legendary Japanese warriors.   Living and dying with bravery and honor is at the heart of Hagakure, a series of texts written by an eighteenth-century samurai, Yamamoto Tsunetomo. It is a window into the samurai mind, illuminating the concept of bushido—the Way of the Warrior—which dictated how samurai were expected to behave, conduct themselves, live, and die. While Hagakure was for many years a secret text known only to the warrior vassals of the Nabeshima clan to which the author belonged, it later came to be recognized as a classic exposition of samurai thought. The original Hagakure consists of over 1,300 short texts that Tsunetomo dictated to a younger samurai over a seven-year period. William Scott Wilson has selected and translated here three hundred of the most representative of those texts to create an accessible distillation of this guide for samurai. No other translator has so thoroughly and eruditely rendered this text into English. For this edition, Wilson has added a new introduction that casts Hagakure in a different light than ever before. Tsunetomo refers to bushido as “the Way of death,” a description that has held a morbid fascination for readers over the years. But in Tsunetomo’s time, bushido was a nuanced concept that related heavily to the Zen concept of muga, the “death” of the ego. Wilson’s revised introduction gives the historical and philosophical background for that more metaphorical reading of Hagakure, and through this lens, the classic takes on a fresh and nuanced appeal.
