Spinning and weaving Books
University of Calgary Press Prairie Interlace: Weaving, Modernisms, and the
Book SynopsisInnovative textile-based artwork exploded across the Canadian Prairies in the second half of the twentieth century. Melding craft traditions with modern and modernist movements in art and theory a diverse body of creators opened a beautiful new chapter in textile art.Prairie Interlace brings together some of the most important scholars of craft in Canada to examine the work of forty-eight artists working with textiles from the 1960s to the 2000s. Recapturing and recording lost histories, this book explores both artists working with textiles and centres of textile study and production, paying special attention to the contexts in which artworks were produced. Indigenous scholars, experts in textile techniques, and experts on the Canadian Prairies provide fascinating insight into an artistic movement which, until now, has been nearly undocumented.Featuring beautiful full-colour images of textile works, many of which have never before been photographed for print, Prairie Interlace provides an opportunity to discover a fascinating movement which has not received the attention it deserves and invites further investigation of this rich period in Canadian art history.Developing from the travelling exhibition of the same name, Prairie Interlace is a collaboration between Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary in Calgary, AB and the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SK.

Search Press Ltd Tapestry Weaving
Book SynopsisKirsten Glasbrook demonstrates the ancient art of tapestry weaving using wool yarn, fine linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or purpose-built looms for larger tapestries. She shows step by step how to weave gorgeous tapestries, from choosing colours and winding warps through to creating images and finishing off with tassels and beads. Readers will learn how to create horizontal and diagonal lines, curves, motifs, shading, outlines, borders and more. There is a gallery of beautiful finished works to inspire everyone from beginners to experienced weavers. This best-selling title has been re-issued to inspire a whole new generation.Trade ReviewWhen modern crafters think of tapestry weaving, they often think of the large-scale medieval tapestries that hang in museums or historical landmarks, but the history of tapestry stretches back much further, to ancient Egypt and other world cultures. In her introduction to tapestry weaving, Glasbrook provides an overview of basic loom setup, weaving techniques, and tapestry design in the form of a sampler project featuring abstract designs. Unlike other forms of weaving, tapestry weaving does not require an expensive loom—one can be made from a simple frame or even stiff cardboard. Glasbrook covers loom preparation, including winding the warp and warping the loom, selection of warp and weft yarn, and techniques for weaving a variety of patterns via a small sampler project. A gallery of Glasbrook’s work, along with tips and techniques for weaving similar projects, follows. VERDICT Tapestry isn’t generally covered in beginner weaving books, and there’s plenty of information here to get novices started with this fascinating and ancient craft. * Library Journal USA *Tapestry Weaving by Kirsten Glasbrook provides a logical and systematic approach to the craft. The book explains the weaving of woolen cloths, linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or specially built looms for bigger work. The book explains many techniques, which are accompanied by step by step photographs such as such as deformation of weft lines, vertical appertures, diagonal shapes and curves. The book is suitable for beginners, but will also inspire experienced weavers too. * Textiel Plus *

I wasn't at all sure what more I could do with it than just lots of scarves or the odd tea towel. Elena Vilar's book Woven Art has opened my eyes to the countless possibilities to not only create useful objects, but beautiful art, wall hangings, wearable art, and more. I am looking forward to spending time trying all the techniques included and sourcing suitable materials, not just wool, to create my own art and gifts for friends and family. -- Alexandra Edwards * Customer review *Love it! The book is surprisingly big and very comprehensive. Really good value. The step-by-step pictures are helpful and each step is very well explained. This book has taken weaving to a new level, making it a very interesting choice for home decor projects. -- Pamela Frisby * Customer review *What a lovely well-laid-out book. Easy-to-follow instructions, with plenty of photos. What I liked most was that you didn't need a proper loom to start a project, just a piece of cardboard. Can't wait to make one of the lovely projects. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to do this craft. -- Deborah Lewis * Customer review *I'm really impressed with this book it is so detailed and has so many different techniques and ideas. One thing I really loved was the dyes that can be made for dying materials at home, I also loved how it has so many different ways to weave and how many different materials you can use. It also shows you how to make a loom at home and what tools you need to do different techniques, and also showing other kinds of ideas like necklaces or weaving round a jar. I've always wanted to give that a go but never knew where to begin, i think this book would be fantastic for any skill levels because it takes you through step-by-step and is worded really well so it's easy to follow and understand. The book has photos alongside the text and if you do get stuck you always have a visual from the picture to see what the step your on looks like. It's packed with so much. -- Kayleigh Michelle * Customer review *This book is an ideal size to carry around and read on the go. With textiles being very popular at present I would recommend this book to assist in experimenting with weaving. It contains instructions on how to get started as well as projects to help you progress to a piece of individual art unique to you. It suggests different frames you could use as well as different yarns to weave with including recycled ideas. There is a section on natural dyes and how to use them making this a good reference tool. There is a suggestion of the unusual like making jewellery, covering vessels as well as incorporating objects into wall art. Techniques are well documented and accompanied by plenty of clear pictures. I would recommend this book to every textile artist, novice or experienced - for fun, knowledge and to aid creation of works of art to be proud of. -- Gaye Parker * Customer review *I love this book!!! I’ve been wanting to try weaving since I saw someone using weaving techniques on TV but thought that it would be expensive to buy all of the equipment. This book shows that you can try using weaving techniques for very little expense. The introduction shows you how to make your own looms using materials that you’ll have in your home, it even has step by step instructions for how to make your own T-shirt yarn using old clothes. After the introduction, the book then teaches you basic weaving techniques, explained with both words and images. Finally, it shows you 15 projects that you can make yourself. There is a bag project in the book that I will be using as a beginner reference to design my own bag. Overall this book has simplified what I thought would be an expensive and difficult craft to learn. -- Joanne Gardner * Customer review *Learn the essential weaving methods through each project, starting with a simple beautiful wall hanging in the basic stitch through to a dream catcher made with braids, soumak and rya knots. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Shedding the Shackles: Women's Empowerment
Book SynopsisA celebration of female inventiveness and aesthetic sensibility, Shedding the Shackles explores women’s craft enterprises, their artisanal excellence, and the positive impact their individual projects have on breaking the poverty cycle. In the first part of the twentieth century, suffering from a legacy inherited from the Victorian era, craft skills, such as weaving, sewing, embroidery, and quilting were regarded largely as women’s domestic pastimes, and remained undervalued and marginalised. It has taken several decades for attitudes to change, for the boundaries between ‘fine art’ and craft to blur, and for textile crafts to be given the same respect and recognition as other media. Featuring artisans and projects from across the globe Shedding the Shackles celebrates their vision and motivation giving a fascinating glimpse into how these craft initiatives have created a sustainable lifestyle, and impacted upon their communities at a deeper level.Trade ReviewThis book offers readers a wide variety of art and technique to appreciate. * Booklist *Lynne Stein's beautiful book celebrates female crafts from across the globe. * The Simple Things *Lynne has not only written about the work but the people behind the work. … She has produced a book that is both informative and interesting … It is a lovely book to delve into. * Books Threads *there’s no shortage of colorful images or descriptions of how women have made beautiful items. -- Jeannine Clegg * Threads *This book takes the reader around the world through story and image [...] I will revisit this book time and again, and dive more deeply into global textile traditions. She even includes instructions on fashioning and using DIY cardboard looms and shuttles. In the introductions for each project, any necessary specifications like the number of warps or style of loom are noted. Budding weavers have the option to either follow projects exactly as they are laid out or to put their own unique twist on the concepts presented to craft something truly unique. Projects are marked beginner, intermediate, or advanced, making it easy for the everyone to progress through the book as they become more familiar with circular weaving.Trade ReviewThis comprehensive guide has over 30 techniques. Weavers can follow the projects exactly, or add their own unique twist. Projects are marked beginner, intermediate or advanced so it's easy to work through the book as confidence grows. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Covers all the basic information you need about how to set up the looms for weaving, with lots of colour illustrations and instructions clearly explained alongside each. Includes many projects as well that, even if you don’t want to do them, provide lots of inspiration as well as additional instructions. A fabulous book! * Customer Review *The book’s title is self-explanatory. It begins with tools and materials, including templates for a cardboard loom and shuttle. A clearer discussion of yarn weights is needed – ‘medium’ is not very helpful, especially to beginners. However, a supplement lists the yarns used in each project. Detailed instructions for warping rings follow, with only one project using a cardboard loom. The instructions throughout – mostly with colour photographs – are very clear and I found them easy to follow. The projects are divided into items for the home – bunting, cushions and mats, then wall hangings. They are varied and original and would tempt people to have a go. Requirements are clearly set out, followed by detailed instructions and tips and ideas to vary the project. The projects are graded in difficulty, however none is really suitable for very young children and a little previous weaving experience would be helpful. Most of the projects, and all the wall hangings, retain the rings used to weave them, which could prove expensive. I was impressed with the range of weaving techniques described, including tabby, twill, leno, soumak, inlay and rya. Supplements include a glossary of weaving terms and details of how to make the knots used in the book. The Crowood Press Ltd Weaving Textiles That Shape Themselves
Book SynopsisWeaving Textiles That Shape Themselves sounds like a contradiction in terms, but this book sets out to show how textiles can do precisely that: shape themselves. Weaving with high-twist yarns and contrasting materials can create fabrics with lively textures and elastic properties. Although these fabrics are flat on the loom, they are transformed by washing - water releases the energy of the different yarns and the fabrics 'organize themselves' into crinkled or pleated textures.

NIAS Press Pattern and Loom: A Practical Study of the
Book SynopsisWhen John Becker's Pattern and Loom was posthumously published in 1987, the work was hailed as an important work that revealed much new knowledge on the development of weaving techniques across the centuries from China through to Europe. The key to the book's almost forensic investigation of its subject was the author himself, a Danish damask weaver with a lifetime's practical experience in his craft and an intimate knowledge of weaving techniques that allowed him to decipher, experiment and interpret original techniques from small remnants of surviving material. Long out of print, the work has been tidied and reset by Becker's collaborator on the original work, the sinologist Don Wagner.Trade Review'To the modern weaver looking for a source of inspiration in the past John Becker has written an eye-opening indispensable handbook.' - John Peter Wild, Antiquity, 1988, no. 62 'The greatest virtue of this book is that it shows the archaeologist how much can be learned from practical experimentation in the re-creation of ancient crafts and artefacts.' - E.J.W.
