Stackpole Books Pattern Weaving Basics for the Handloom

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisPresents the basic steps needed to weave luxurious fabrics on a foot-treadle handloom. This title includes tips and variations for exploring creative weaving ideas. With step-by-step colour photos that show the process, it offers projects for scarves, throws, table sets, runners and blankets.Trade ReviewAutumn 13 Subtitled ‘Basics for the Handloom’ this book is intended as an introduction to four-shaft weaving on a floor loom (although the principles and projects are equally applicable to a table loom). Starting with an introduction to the names and purposes of parts of the loom and accessories, the author takes the reader step-by-step through basic skills from winding the warp, through dressing the loom to starting to weave. The clear and abundant photographs are a definite plus for beginners, and in general I found the combination of text and illustration very easy to understand. I found several instances however where information was provided in later chapters rather than where it would have been most appropriate, indicating the importance of reading the whole book before attempting to wind your first warp and dress the loom. To apply the basic skills learnt in the first part of the book, the author details four projects for the beginner to explore the versatility of their loom through a good variety of techniques in wool, cotton and linen. These range from checked scarves in plain weave and twill, through placemats in Ms and Os, a herringbone blanket involving stitching together narrower lengths and a table set in Bronson Lace. There are many helpful hints throughout which more experienced weavers could find useful, for example a recommendation to include a little extra warp length in each project to weave a notebook sample. On the downside there are several photographs that do not correlate with the text descriptions and could confuse a beginner weaver. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book offers a whistle-stop guide to the history of spinning and weaving. The story begins in prehistory when people first wove yarns to create clothing and blankets. The book explores the ways in which spinning and weaving has continued to be important throughout human history (or should that be herstory), in artistic, economic and functional terms. The second part of the book brings us up to date, via interviews with modern day spinning and weaving artisans. These textiles artists generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques and tools for the twenty first century. Photos of their work, and their working environment offers a unique view into the world of this ancient craft. Finally, if you are inspired to try your hand at this fascinating and most ancient of crafts, the book also has a resources section. It includes a valuable list of suppliers of fibre, dyes, tools and yarn, as well as information about training courses, useful websites and more - everything you need to get started.

  • The Book of Looms – A History of the Handloom

Brandeis University Press The Book of Looms – A History of the Handloom

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA heavily illustrated classic on the evolution of the handloom. The handloom—often no more than a bundle of sticks and a few lengths of cordage—has been known to almost all cultures for thousands of years. Eric Broudy places the wide variety of handlooms in their historical context. What influenced their development? How did they travel from one geographic area to another? Were they invented independently by different cultures? How have modern cultures improved on ancient weaving skills and methods? Broudy shows how virtually every culture has woven on handlooms. He highlights the incredible technical achievement of early cultures that created magnificent textiles with the crudest of tools and demonstrates that modern technology has done nothing to surpass their skill or inventiveness. Trade Review“Broudy extracts his evidence from such unlikely places as Egyptian tombs to the unearthed ruins of a ninth century Viking ship in Norway. . . . In this awesome feat of research, recounted with storytelling expertise, he traces the growth of weaving from simple matting and wickerwork basketry to the massive tapestry (haute-lisse) looms of the Gobelin workshop of Paris and the silk-producing izaribata looms of China. . . . If you are a weaver by profession or hobby, this book will make you proud of it, and, if you have never touched a loom and are thinking of a new career, this book will, once you tear yourself away from it, send you spinning off to the yarn store.” * Goodfellow Review of Craft *“If you are also fascinated by the historical and cultural aspects of weaving, this book should find a place in your library.” * Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers *Table of ContentsIntroduction, 1. Book SynopsisInnovative textile-based artwork exploded across the Canadian Prairies in the second half of the twentieth century. Melding craft traditions with modern and modernist movements in art and theory a diverse body of creators opened a beautiful new chapter in textile art.Prairie Interlace brings together some of the most important scholars of craft in Canada to examine the work of forty-eight artists working with textiles from the 1960s to the 2000s. Recapturing and recording lost histories, this book explores both artists working with textiles and centres of textile study and production, paying special attention to the contexts in which artworks were produced. Indigenous scholars, experts in textile techniques, and experts on the Canadian Prairies provide fascinating insight into an artistic movement which, until now, has been nearly undocumented.Featuring beautiful full-colour images of textile works, many of which have never before been photographed for print, Prairie Interlace provides an opportunity to discover a fascinating movement which has not received the attention it deserves and invites further investigation of this rich period in Canadian art history.Developing from the travelling exhibition of the same name, Prairie Interlace is a collaboration between Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary in Calgary, AB and the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SK.
