Book SynopsisThis book offers a whistle-stop guide to the history of spinning and weaving. The story begins in prehistory when people first wove yarns to create clothing and blankets. The second part of the book brings us up to date, via interviews with modern day spinning and weaving artisans. These textiles artists generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques and tools for the twenty first century. Photos of their work, and their working environment offers a unique view into the world of this ancient craft. Finally, if you are inspired to try your hand at this fascinating and most ancient of crafts, the book also has a resources section. • Respect the Spindle: Spin Infinite Yarns with One

Interweave Press Inc Respect the Spindle: Spin Infinite Yarns with One

Book SynopsisPortable and productive, the hand spindle has been responsible for creating the world’s yarn for millennia. Many contemporary spinners view the hand spindle as a beginner’s tool, suited to learn the basic steps of spinning before moving on to a spinning wheel. In Respect the Spindle, Franquemont emphasizes the spindle's importance and use to make yarn in advanced ways for high-end to novelty cloth. In fact, the yarns and cloth made for thousands of years—Viking sails, Egyptian shrouds, Roman togas—all were created with the use of hand spindles. And, in other parts of the world, the spindle still reigns supreme, supplying astounding volumes of yarn for every purpose imaginable. The perfect how-to book for any spinner with a growing collection of spindles or even just a dowel, Respect the Spindle combines step-by-step photography with detailed illustrations, making the spindle spinning techniques clear to even the novice spinner. Franquemont teaches techniques from the basics, such as getting started on the spindle, to more specialized techniques, such as using the spindle to make specific kinds of yarn faster than imagined. Profiles of spindle spinners from various traditions are presented in sidebars throughout the book, which introduce heartwarming and historical fiber stories from around the world. Images of gorgeous yarn and spindles provide inspiration and plenty of eye candy for any fiber lover. Franquemont also includes five simple projects give spinners practice in creating a variety of yarns and patterns. Trade ReviewAug 10 This is much more than a technique book. There are 50 pages about spindles and the history of spinning, before you get to "Starting to Spin". The instructions are very well done, nothing is rushed and there are good photos of everything you need. I'd happily recommend this to a beginner. It is a very readable book. We have tales of Abby's own experiences as a spinner, a chapter on how spindles work (it does get a bit technical, but she does explain it all clearly), all spindle spinning and plying techniques well covered, and even a few pages on looking after your spindles and repairing them. A good read, excellent spinning instructions, helpful photos. * Yarn Maker *Table of ContentsIntroduction Spindle Anatomy Getting Started What About The Wheel? The Crowood Press Ltd Weaving Textiles That Shape Themselves

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisWeaving Textiles That Shape Themselves sounds like a contradiction in terms, but this book sets out to show how textiles can do precisely that: shape themselves. Weaving with high-twist yarns and contrasting materials can create fabrics with lively textures and elastic properties. Although these fabrics are flat on the loom, they are transformed by washing - water releases the energy of the different yarns and the fabrics 'organize themselves' into crinkled or pleated textures.

Stackpole Books Pattern Weaving Basics for the Handloom

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisPresents the basic steps needed to weave luxurious fabrics on a foot-treadle handloom. This title includes tips and variations for exploring creative weaving ideas. With step-by-step colour photos that show the process, it offers projects for scarves, throws, table sets, runners and blankets.Trade ReviewAutumn 13 Subtitled ‘Basics for the Handloom’ this book is intended as an introduction to four-shaft weaving on a floor loom (although the principles and projects are equally applicable to a table loom). Starting with an introduction to the names and purposes of parts of the loom and accessories, the author takes the reader step-by-step through basic skills from winding the warp, through dressing the loom to starting to weave. The clear and abundant photographs are a definite plus for beginners, and in general I found the combination of text and illustration very easy to understand. I found several instances however where information was provided in later chapters rather than where it would have been most appropriate, indicating the importance of reading the whole book before attempting to wind your first warp and dress the loom. To apply the basic skills learnt in the first part of the book, the author details four projects for the beginner to explore the versatility of their loom through a good variety of techniques in wool, cotton and linen. These range from checked scarves in plain weave and twill, through placemats in Ms and Os, a herringbone blanket involving stitching together narrower lengths and a table set in Bronson Lace. There are many helpful hints throughout which more experienced weavers could find useful, for example a recommendation to include a little extra warp length in each project to weave a notebook sample. On the downside there are several photographs that do not correlate with the text descriptions and could confuse a beginner weaver.
