Search Press Ltd A Beginner's Guide to Knitting on a Loom (New

Book SynopsisFor those who have struggled in the past to knit with needles, loom knitting is an easy craft to master which children and adults alike can learn in a few hours. Loom knitting is a revolutionary way of knitting that uses a circular or rectangular loom, or knitting board, consisting of a frame with pegs. Looms are easy and fun to use, even without conventional knitting experience. An individual can create almost anything, from knitted tubes for hats or socks to flat panels for scarves, shawls and sweaters. This new and updated book is designed as an essential reference and a hands-on project resource for the loom knitter. The first part of the book provides loom-knitting techniques for both round and rectangular looms, and knitting boards. An inspiring design section presents more than 35 patterns to get the new loom-knitter started. Also included are a handy stitch pattern section and a glossary of techniques.Trade ReviewGreat book! It's very well explained and really does treat you like a beginner. I love the simple instructions and that it has pictures which help show each stage. It has some really cute projects which would make lovely handmade presents for family and friends. It's also good that it has pictures for each project so you know what you're aiming for! * Caroline Bourne * I am completely new to Loom Knitting although I can knit the traditional way! I'm now inspired to go and purchase a loom - I never realised the looms were so versatile - I thought all that could be made were hats! Also amazed that you can do several different stitches. The pictures are clear and seem very easy to follow. My first project will be the beautiful cowl! * Shelagh Bird *another new hobby for me to learn the book is clear and easy to understand covers all the things you need to start plus patterns /projects * Lynne Hart *I have never tried this before but this is a fantastic book with clear and precise instructions * Denise Bonham *I've looked at the book, as a beginner, and can't believe how detailed it is. I am awaiting arrival of a loom, but am looking forward to trying at during the holidays. It looks like it will be getting a lot of use between me & the kids. A joy to read * Colleen Allison *Even though i can knit and crochet it is nice to be able to learn something a bit different , i find the book clear to understand with loads of patterns that i can't wait to get started on, it even tells you what tools you need very precise ,suitable for beginners and poeple like me that already have skills , great book * Julie Dawn *I received a free copy of this book from Search Press. The book itself is a good manageable size. I love the cover design and all the colour pictures within, they really help to make it feel uplifting and inspiring. The information within is set out in easy to read sections with lots of pictures to help. The topics covered are comprehensive and the patterns are for adults and children, and all really wearable items. I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to start out with their loom. * Cherry Edwards *I'd never heard of knitting on a loom before so I definitely needed a book for beginners. This fits the bill perfectly. It starts with advice on what equipment there is and how to decide what to buy which is really helpful. Advice on yarn is helpful and means the book would be suitable even if you're not experienced in normal knitting. The techniques are explained with clear pictures in a logical sequence. And of course you then want to crack on and make something so there is a good selection of patterns. Most of these are quite small items so look like they would be satisfying to complete. I find hats and socks quite tricky on normal knitting needles so am looking forward to getting myself a some equipment to try those. * Heather Haig *Loom knitting is a craft I haven't tried yet and have wanted to try making a sock with a loom, The book explains about all the different Looms there are,the stitches, and also felting. The instructions are so easy to follow specially as there are pictures as well. The patterns are all things I would try, usually I find that books have things in it I would never dream of making. Defintely recommend this book. * Kathy Downing *

  • Weaver's Idea Book: Creative Cloth on a

Interweave Press Inc Weaver's Idea Book: Creative Cloth on a

Book SynopsisUse one of the world's simplest tools to explore the creative possibilities of cloth! The Weaver's Idea Book presents a variety of patterns for simple rigid-heddle and harness looms, complete with sample swatches for drafts and project ideas. Beginning and experienced weavers on the lookout for new weave structure patterns will be drawn to the multitude of designs in The Weaver's Idea Book.Trade ReviewAs a guide for beginners and practiced weavers Jane Patrick's book is inspirational. Although specifically aimed at the rigid heddle loom, the 200 pages hold a wealth of information on weave structures and patterns that can be used on many looms. The spiral bound, textbook-style layout is good, with clear section separation, and the chapters take you up a hierarchy of difficulty. I felt comfortable with plain, finger-controlled and pick up weaves, then I marvelled in awe at sections on warp and weft-faced frabrics and working with two heddles. There is a nod to garment and item construction in the guise of a few set pieces, but the book's real strength is in opening a treasure chest of weaving possibility to new or relatively inexperienced weavers. Each section provides a soft kaleidoscope of samples which I have already been tempted to replicate. The book will doubtless remain a good source book to refer to for new creative ideas and inspiration. However, the book might give the absolute beginner a puzzle at times, as it is not always clear and sometimes repetitive. Generally though, the book was a joy to read and is unlikely to gather dust on my bookshelf.-Journal for Weavers Spinners & DyersTable of ContentsInside readers will learn: Techniques including leno, Brooks bouquet, soumak, and embroidery on fabric Weaving patterns and swatches that illustrate each technique, accompanied by beautiful step-by-step photography How to create 10 attractive projects, including a felted scarf, sturdy tote, evening wrap, table mat, tunic with pattern trim, felted wrap skirt with woven-in belt loops, honeycomb pillow pair, clasped-weft coasters, apron with paper pile, and a double weave table runner Weaving tips and tricks to help weavers at all levels achieve their textile dreams

  • Tapestry Weaving

    Search Press Ltd Tapestry Weaving

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisKirsten Glasbrook demonstrates the ancient art of tapestry weaving using wool yarn, fine linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or purpose-built looms for larger tapestries. She shows step by step how to weave gorgeous tapestries, from choosing colours and winding warps through to creating images and finishing off with tassels and beads. Readers will learn how to create horizontal and diagonal lines, curves, motifs, shading, outlines, borders and more. There is a gallery of beautiful finished works to inspire everyone from beginners to experienced weavers. This best-selling title has been re-issued to inspire a whole new generation.Trade ReviewWhen modern crafters think of tapestry weaving, they often think of the large-scale medieval tapestries that hang in museums or historical landmarks, but the history of tapestry stretches back much further, to ancient Egypt and other world cultures. In her introduction to tapestry weaving, Glasbrook provides an overview of basic loom setup, weaving techniques, and tapestry design in the form of a sampler project featuring abstract designs. Unlike other forms of weaving, tapestry weaving does not require an expensive loom—one can be made from a simple frame or even stiff cardboard. Glasbrook covers loom preparation, including winding the warp and warping the loom, selection of warp and weft yarn, and techniques for weaving a variety of patterns via a small sampler project. A gallery of Glasbrook’s work, along with tips and techniques for weaving similar projects, follows. VERDICT Tapestry isn’t generally covered in beginner weaving books, and there’s plenty of information here to get novices started with this fascinating and ancient craft. * Library Journal USA *Tapestry Weaving by Kirsten Glasbrook provides a logical and systematic approach to the craft. The book explains the weaving of woolen cloths, linen and cotton on simple rectangular frames with notches, or specially built looms for bigger work. The book explains many techniques, which are accompanied by step by step photographs such as such as deformation of weft lines, vertical appertures, diagonal shapes and curves. The book is suitable for beginners, but will also inspire experienced weavers too. * Textiel Plus *

  • Yarn Spinning with a Modern Twist: How to Create

Search Press Ltd Yarn Spinning with a Modern Twist: How to Create

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis accessible and inspiring introduction to drop-spindle spinning is ideal for fibre artists, knitters, crocheters, felters and weavers. Vanessa Kroening explains how to clean and prepare fleece for spinning, giving valuable tips to beginners and more experienced spinners alike. There are sections on choosing a fleece, carding, blending colours, making rolags (rolls of fibre), batts (flat carded fibres) and a step-by-step explanation of how to use a drop spindle – a great way to spin your own yarn without needing to invest in an expensive spinning wheel. Vanessa also shows you to how to ply and dye your yarn and how to add beads, sequins and other decorative elements for a modern and wonderfully artistic finish.Trade ReviewThe colorful debut from spinner Kroening teaches crafters how to make yarn using a drop spindle. The author breaks down how to use the simple instrument to turn raw fleece into thread, helping readers get started with advice on how to choose a fleece (matted wool is hard to spin, and kemp doesn’t dye well), clean it (tease the fibers apart and soak them in warm water), and card it (she prefers using a blending board, which resembles a small easel with sharp-toothed tines on it). Step-by-step photos show how to use the spindle, which dangles in the air from a strand of wool that tightens into yarn as one spins the tool. The author’s variations on drop spindle technique are a highlight, showing how to incorporate beads, sequins, and other embellishments. She also shows how to adjust the way one feeds wool to the spindle to create different yarn textures; for example, intermittently adjusting the angle of one’s wrist downward as one pushes the wool creates a “thick-and-thin” thread that leaves tufts in the yarn. The bounty of photos ensure readers will know how every step should look, and Kroening’s knowledge of the craft impresses. This makes yarn spinning easy. * Publisher's Weekly *Using a drop spindle is a great way to spin our own yarn without investing in an expensive wheel. The book explains how to clean and prepare fleece, gives tips to beginners, shoes us how to ply and dye yarn then add beads, sequins and other decorative elements for a modern artistic finish. * Machine Knitting Monthly, January 2023 *An excellent introduction to spinning with a drop spindle. Unlike some authors who are didactic with methodology you are given options in things like how to hold a spindle to suit you. The 'why' of following procedures is explained which led to a couple of lightbulb moments and explained why instructions from other authors resulted in a messy failure. Beautiful photography of each stage of taking fibre from fleece to yarn encourages you to start from scratch rather than relying on processed rolags. Lots of practical tips and the odd warning made this such a great read that I look forward, with confidence, to accepting next time my local farmer offers a fleece. -- Alison Finch * Customer Review *This is an amazing book both for beginners and more experienced spinners. It covers just about everything from equipment, methods of colour blending using carder, drum carder and blending boards, spinning, plying and even dyeing. I would definitely recommend. -- Sally Dopson * Customer Review *Colourful and very well illustrated, this book is ideal for the beginner spindle spinner who wishes to create the latest bold and beautiful art yarns, but doesn’t want to invest at this early stage in a spinning wheel. Chapters are logically arranged and the advice is concisely written and sound. Assuming no prior knowledge of spinning, the first part of the book covers choosing and preparing fleece, carding and blending, then choosing your spindle and how to get spinning. Ample clear, step-by-step photographs are provided, making mastering the techniques shown very straightforward. A wide range of necessary techniques are covered, including choosing and then scouring your fleece, the use of a picker, flicker carder, blending board and drum carder. Conventional and Andean plying are explained, followed by spinning art yarns. Auto-wrapping, cloud spinning, lock spinning, slub yarns, beaded yarns, core spinning and beehives are all covered too. These techniques take some experimentation and practice on either a wheel or a spindle, but are well-described and should enable the reader to give them a good try. The book concludes with a short section on dyeing and a gallery of woven or knitted projects using the art yarns described. -- Christina Chrisholm, Online Guild * Association of Guilds for Spinners, Weavers and Dyers *Table of ContentsChoosing & Preparing your Fleece Fibre Preparation Spinning Plying Finishing the Yarn Drop Spindle Techniques Dyeing

A fabulous book! * Customer Review *The book’s title is self-explanatory. It begins with tools and materials, including templates for a cardboard loom and shuttle. A clearer discussion of yarn weights is needed – ‘medium’ is not very helpful, especially to beginners. However, a supplement lists the yarns used in each project. Detailed instructions for warping rings follow, with only one project using a cardboard loom. The instructions throughout – mostly with colour photographs – are very clear and I found them easy to follow. The projects are divided into items for the home – bunting, cushions and mats, then wall hangings. They are varied and original and would tempt people to have a go. Requirements are clearly set out, followed by detailed instructions and tips and ideas to vary the project. The projects are graded in difficulty, however none is really suitable for very young children and a little previous weaving experience would be helpful. Most of the projects, and all the wall hangings, retain the rings used to weave them, which could prove expensive. I was impressed with the range of weaving techniques described, including tabby, twill, leno, soumak, inlay and rya. Supplements include a glossary of weaving terms and details of how to make the knots used in the book. This book would be a useful addition to Guild libraries, and for people crafting with children -- Judith Edwards, Eden Valley and Online Guilds * Association of Guilds for Spinners, Weavers and Dyers *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: Materials and Tools for Circular Weaving Chapter Two: How to Warp Any Hoop for Circular Weaving Chapter Three: Circular Weaving for Function Chapter Four: Decorative Circular Wall Hangings Index

  • The Book of Looms – A History of the Handloom

Brandeis University Press The Book of Looms – A History of the Handloom

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA heavily illustrated classic on the evolution of the handloom. The handloom—often no more than a bundle of sticks and a few lengths of cordage—has been known to almost all cultures for thousands of years. Eric Broudy places the wide variety of handlooms in their historical context. What influenced their development? How did they travel from one geographic area to another? Were they invented independently by different cultures? How have modern cultures improved on ancient weaving skills and methods? Broudy shows how virtually every culture has woven on handlooms. He highlights the incredible technical achievement of early cultures that created magnificent textiles with the crudest of tools and demonstrates that modern technology has done nothing to surpass their skill or inventiveness. Trade Review“Broudy extracts his evidence from such unlikely places as Egyptian tombs to the unearthed ruins of a ninth century Viking ship in Norway. . . . In this awesome feat of research, recounted with storytelling expertise, he traces the growth of weaving from simple matting and wickerwork basketry to the massive tapestry (haute-lisse) looms of the Gobelin workshop of Paris and the silk-producing izaribata looms of China. . . . If you are a weaver by profession or hobby, this book will make you proud of it, and, if you have never touched a loom and are thinking of a new career, this book will, once you tear yourself away from it, send you spinning off to the yarn store.” * Goodfellow Review of Craft *“If you are also fascinated by the historical and cultural aspects of weaving, this book should find a place in your library.” * Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers *Table of ContentsIntroduction, 1. There are also more challenging ideas like a textured weave, and quilt-style piecing. There are small jewelry ideas, which I like. If there was any lack in the book, it would only be the section about joining, which was brief. But then, I am passionate about joining. Meg loves to weave and to share weaving ideas, and her book will be a good addition to your pin loom weaving library. -- Marcella EdmundExpert weaver Margaret Stump draws upon her more than forty years of experience and expertise to provide step-by-step instructions for 25 portable pin loom weaving projects in Pin Loom Weaving to Go. Cox, Editor and Chief, Wisconsin BookwatchWhether you are a child who is newly discovering the joy of weaving, or an experienced weaver seeking an inner-child's creative experience, this book will be a great guide. Margaret Stump has been an enthusiastic creator of pin-loom weaving for forty years. Her thoughtful approach to learning about this enjoyable weaving method, along with sharing her inventive projects, invites readers to give this technique a try. The excellent photographs and logical step-by-step process will give confidence to readers wishing to have the satisfaction of making a simple woven project that does not involve complicated or expensive weaving equipment. The first part of the book has precise instructions beginning with making your own square pin loom. She also explains types of square and rectangular looms that are available for purchase. Many tips and details, including the selection of the right tools and yarns, will help readers to get a good start. This information creates a solid foundation before they tackle some of the more advanced projects. The book has thirty useful and decorative projects. Included are scarves, mats, purses, pillows, shawls, and blankets. All can be personalized through the use of favorite colors or yarns to allow for individual creativity and expression. The small amulet bags, flowers & leaves, doll blanket, bracelets (and more) are sure to win a younger student's fancy. The items that require stitching together may need an experienced helping hand, but the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The author adds many clever projects, such as the adorable cat pillow, the fox purse, the Blooming Backpack (featured on the book's cover) and many more, which take the reader far beyond the simple square! From simple to intermediate projects for children and adults, this will be a good resource for many years. Additional variations, like weaving on the bias or creating sculptural shapes, may help to inspire more advanced weavers to take a closer look at applying this technique to their work. Readers may be surprised with the discovery that the vintage pin loom projects have a place among contemporary textiles. --Jan Hewitt Towsley -- Shuttle, Spindle & DyepotPin looms seem to be popping up everywhere these days. For weavers with limited room or a limited budget, or who want a more portable option for weaving, the pin loom is a wonderful choice. Of course, after weaving the first few squares, many weavers ask, "What do I do with all these bits?" If you're pin loom weaver extraordinaire Margaret Stump, the answer is, "Just about anything." In her latest book on pin-loom weaving, Stump shares her inspired designs for pieces woven on a variety of portable looms, including the standard 4" x 4" loom, a 2" x 2" pin loom, an adjustable fine-gauge knitting loom, and a potholder loom. Almost a third of the book focuses on tutorials. In addition to instructions for weaving with each type of loom, the book shows how to make a 2" x 2" loom and how to join woven pieces. I especially enjoyed the tutorial for weaving with yarn on a potholder loom. Anyone who enjoys weaving on the ubiquitous 4" x 4" loom will love the tutorials on bias weaving and weaving triangles. The triangle tutorial is particularly clever and opens up a whole new world of design possibilities with this simple loom. -- Christina Garton, Handwoven

    Stackpole Books Weaving Iridescence

Book SynopsisBobbie Irwin has been teaching techniques for weaving iridescence for more than ten years. In this book, she delivers her most comprehensive course yet, from how to choose yarn to the ways weave structure affects iridescence to the best uses for your iridescent fabric. Seven hands-on projects have you exploring what you've learned right away.Trade ReviewNow thanks to Bobbie Irwin, I can create my own iridescent fabric with her book Weaving Iridescence: Colorplay for the Handweaver. The book starts off with explaining iridescence, optics of light and color. The photographs help to interpret the results as well as give inspiration to your fiber choice, thread size and weave structure. Blue boxes highlight the information of the chapters. Bobbie touches on getting the most out of iridescence with sewing garments, spinning, dyeing and knitting. Then, she shows you how to achieve this technique using a loom that requires from 4 to 8 shafts. The projects include color gamp napkins, a double weave scarf in a 4 and 6 shaft version, 4 shaft scarves using 3 and 4 color effects, clasping, vest fabric in double-weave and lightweight huck yardage. She closes with a note on photography and the ins and outs of getting a good photograph of iridescent fabric. The photographs are well done and as I said before, lends them to motivate your creativeness. This is a one of a kind book to take your weaving and color appreciation to the next level. -- Paula MoliverTwice in my weaving career, I've accidentally woven iridescent cloth. Both times, I chose a weft color based on a whim and ended up with magical, shimmering cloth. Bobbie Irwin, weaver and author of the aptly titled Weaving Iridescence, stumbled upon iridescence in a similar way. Her journey began, as great weaving discoveries often do, while sampling on the loom. Irwin decided to combine magenta with chartreuse, two colors she used frequently in her weaving with other colors but never together. The result was iridescent cloth and a desire to study this phenomenon, which is ultimately how this wonderful book came to be. Although Irwin is a master of all things iridescent, even those beyond cloth, she makes few assumptions about the knowledge of the reader. The earliest chapters in her book are all about education. She explains what iridescence is and how it relates to other "-escence" words such as opalescence and luminescence. The book also explores the nature of light and color, giving the reader a good foundation of knowledge on which to stand before getting to the meat of the subject at hand. The rest of the book is devoted to the subject of iridescence and how it works in weaving. Irwin teaches her readers the "rules" of iridescence (and how most of them can be broken) and how to choose colors, yarns, and weave structures to get this effect. She also, very interestingly, explains what iridescence isn't, giving examples of fabrics that are lustrous and often beautiful but not truly iridescent. The book ends with five projects designed to help the reader learn more about the nature of iridescence on the loom. Such a book cannot truly be successful without good photography--and lots of it. As beautiful as iridescence is, it's also notoriously difficult to capture on film, but photographer Reed Irwin did this spectacularly. The book is full of gorgeous fabrics that seem to shimmer even on the printed page. As Irwin mentions in her "Note on Photography" at the end of the book, this is no accident--she actually delayed writing the book until photo technology was developed that could adequately capture this phenomenon. She also gives plenty of tips and tricks for any amateur iridescence photographers out there. This book is a stunning work on a subject that has intrigued and delighted many a weaver throughout history. It is a must-have for any weaver who wants to harness the magic of iridescence. -- Christina Garton, HandwovenTable of ContentsTABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter 1: What is Iridescence? Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThe author explains that meeting this popular little pin loom as an adult meant she had no preconceived ideas that it was only a child's toy, seeing it as having unlimited design potential allied with low-tech equipment and virtually no yarn waste. The content of the book is divided into three main sections: Getting Started, listing equipment needed; Techniques, an introduction to the actual weaving; and finally Projects. She offers detailed step-by-step instructions, accompanied by excellent photographs of each step in creating basic squares or triangles in plain colours, simple stripes and checks. There is advice on how to design using colour, pattern, and texture using different yarns and stitch combinations, followed by suggestions on finishing methods for edges with fringes, crochet edges and lucet cords. A chapter on tapestry weaving takes the reader through creating a sampler using a drawing underneath the weaving; how to create shapes such as faces following a drawing is explained clearly. Projects for the home include, of course, potholders, but also larger projects where individual modules are joined together for table runners, pillows, and square baskets and boxes. Final chapters offer ideas for wall hangings and fashion accessories. For someone keen to experiment with textures and yarns using inexpensive equipment which takes up little space, this book offers an excellent introduction, and offers links to suppliers and how-to videos. -- Lyn Duffus * The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *
