We have tales of Abby's own experiences as a spinner, a chapter on how spindles work (it does get a bit technical, but she does explain it all clearly), all spindle spinning and plying techniques well covered, and even a few pages on looking after your spindles and repairing them. Although specifically aimed at the rigid heddle loom, the 200 pages hold a wealth of information on weave structures and patterns that can be used on many looms. The spiral bound, textbook-style layout is good, with clear section separation, and the chapters take you up a hierarchy of difficulty. I felt comfortable with plain, finger-controlled and pick up weaves, then I marvelled in awe at sections on warp and weft-faced frabrics and working with two heddles. There is a nod to garment and item construction in the guise of a few set pieces, but the book's real strength is in opening a treasure chest of weaving possibility to new or relatively inexperienced weavers. Each section provides a soft kaleidoscope of samples which I have already been tempted to replicate. The book will doubtless remain a good source book to refer to for new creative ideas and inspiration. However, the book might give the absolute beginner a puzzle at times, as it is not always clear and sometimes repetitive. This fits the bill perfectly. It starts with advice on what equipment there is and how to decide what to buy which is really helpful. Advice on yarn is helpful and means the book would be suitable even if you're not experienced in normal knitting. The techniques are explained with clear pictures in a logical sequence. And of course you then want to crack on and make something so there is a good selection of patterns. Most of these are quite small items so look like they would be satisfying to complete. Until I read this book. By the time I had read the introduction and the first two pages I suddenly realised that I understood the weave structure, as the title promised. The author writes in a friendly and conversational style. After explaining the basic principles of shadow weaving, she leads the reader step-by-step through threading and treadling for four and eight-harness set-ups. In Chapter 6 she explains how to break down a full draft into its individual components, starting with the dominant threads, then adding the shadow threads, before putting all the components together to see if it works. The second half of the book contains 15 very attractive projects to try, from simple but beautiful designs on 4-shafts to complex constructions for 8-shafts. I now understand why my first attempt at shadow weaving failed and I can’t wait to warp up my loom for my next project. Highly recommended. -- Sarah A. I just purchased a Mirrix Tapestry Loom and can’t wait to warp it and incorporate some of these designs into my woven beaded structures. It is very interesting how the author completely changes the appearance of many of the pieces. She has a wonderful eye for design and modifies many of her patterns with the introduction of new colors and hues. She utilizes Miyuki delica cylinder beads in all of her woven structures. These beads are readily available in a wide range of colors which can be purchased in either bags or tubes. Fil One-G-0.25 mm. beige nylon beading thread is recommended. But, I have used Fireline 6lb S-Lon,C-Lon, Nymo B thread. Enjoy! This is an exciting book for every bead weaver to explore. By the way, keep on beading and you can complete more than a bracelet with this wonderful compilation of patterns.

This is a one of a kind book to take your weaving and color appreciation to the next level. -- Paula MoliverTwice in my weaving career, I've accidentally woven iridescent cloth. Both times, I chose a weft color based on a whim and ended up with magical, shimmering cloth. Bobbie Irwin, weaver and author of the aptly titled Weaving Iridescence, stumbled upon iridescence in a similar way. Her journey began, as great weaving discoveries often do, while sampling on the loom. Irwin decided to combine magenta with chartreuse, two colors she used frequently in her weaving with other colors but never together. The result was iridescent cloth and a desire to study this phenomenon, which is ultimately how this wonderful book came to be. Although Irwin is a master of all things iridescent, even those beyond cloth, she makes few assumptions about the knowledge of the reader. The earliest chapters in her book are all about education. She explains what iridescence is and how it relates to other "-escence" words such as opalescence and luminescence. The book also explores the nature of light and color, giving the reader a good foundation of knowledge on which to stand before getting to the meat of the subject at hand. The rest of the book is devoted to the subject of iridescence and how it works in weaving. Irwin teaches her readers the "rules" of iridescence (and how most of them can be broken) and how to choose colors, yarns, and weave structures to get this effect. She also, very interestingly, explains what iridescence isn't, giving examples of fabrics that are lustrous and often beautiful but not truly iridescent. The book ends with five projects designed to help the reader learn more about the nature of iridescence on the loom. Such a book cannot truly be successful without good photography--and lots of it. As beautiful as iridescence is, it's also notoriously difficult to capture on film, but photographer Reed Irwin did this spectacularly. The book is full of gorgeous fabrics that seem to shimmer even on the printed page. As Irwin mentions in her "Note on Photography" at the end of the book, this is no accident--she actually delayed writing the book until photo technology was developed that could adequately capture this phenomenon.
