    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe robots are coming! So too is the ‘age of automation’, the march of ‘invasive’ species, more intense natural disasters, and a potential cataclysm of other unprecedented events and phenomena of which we do not yet know, and cannot predict. This book is concerned with how to account for these non-humans and their effects within theories of social practice. In particular, this provocative collection tackles contemporary debates about the roles, relations and agencies of constantly changing, disruptive, intelligent or otherwise 'dynamic' non-humans, such as weather, animals and automated devices. In doing so contributors challenge and take forward existing understandings of dynamic non-humans in theories of social practice by reconsidering their potential roles in everyday life. The book will benefit sociology, geography, science and technology studies, and human- (and animal-) computer interaction design scholars seeking to make sense of the complex entanglement of non-human phenomena and things in the performance of social practices.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Dynamic non-humans in a changing worldPART I: Nature, materiality and processesChapter 2 Thriving in the Anthropocene: understanding human-weed relations and invasive plant management using theories of practiceChapter 3 Seeing wood for the trees: placing biological processes within practices of heating and harvestingChapter 4 ‘Dynamic’ non-human animals in theories of practice: views from the subalternChapter 5 Dynamic bodies in theories of social practice: vibrant materials and more-than-human assemblagesChapter 6 Mobile drinking – bottled water practices and ontological politicsChapter 7 Immersed in thermal flows: heat as productive of and produced by social practicesPART II: Technologies, automation and performativityChapter 8 Displacement: attending to the role of things in theories of practice through design researchChapter 9 How software matters: connective tissue and self-driving carsChapter 10 Automated artefacts as co-performers of social practices: washing machines, laundering and designChapter 11 Robots and Roomba riders: non-human performers in theories of social practiceChapter 12 Automation, smart homes and symmetrical anthropology: non-humans as performers of practices?.

  • The Evolution of Human Settlements: From Pleistocene Origins to Anthropocene Prospects

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Evolution of Human Settlements: From Pleistocene Origins to Anthropocene Prospects

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book analyzes the history and development of settlements—from the earliest periods in human history to the present day—from a Darwinian evolutionary perspective. At the foundation of the evolutionary model is the argument that the human capacity for complex communication and unique problem-solving ability have led to the formation and reality of the modern city and its scaled-up megacity status. While evolutionary theory forms the platform for the book’s argument, general systems theory provides the operational framework for the organization and interpretations of each chapter. Throughout the book, the authors tackle various issues, questions, and possibilities regarding the future development and evolution of human settlements.Table of Contents

  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Class, Ethnicity and State in the Polarized Metropolis: Putting Wacquant to Work

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLoïc Wacquant is one of the most influential sociological theorists of the contemporary era with his research and writings resonating widely across the social sciences. This edited collection critically responds to Wacquant’s distinct approach to understanding the contemporary urban condition in advanced capitalist societies. It comprises chapters focused on Europe and North America from leading international scholars and new emergent voices, which chart new empirical, theoretical and methodological territory. Pivoting on the relationship between class, ethnicity and the state in the (re-)making of urban marginality, the volume takes stock of Wacquant’s body of work and assesses its value as a springboard for rethinking urban inequality in polarizing times. Heeding Wacquant’s call for constant theoretical critique and development in understanding dynamic urban relations and processes, the contributions challenge, develop and refine Wacquant’s framework, while also synthesizing it with other perspectives and bringing it into dialogue with new areas of inquiry. How can Wacquant’s work aid the empirical understanding of today’s complex urban inequalities? And how can empirical investigation and theoretical synthesis aid the development of Wacquant’s framework? The diverse contributors to the collection ask these, and other, searching questions – and Wacquant responds to this critique in the final chapter. This book will be of interest to scholars engaged in understanding the drivers, contexts, and potential responses to contemporary urban marginality.Table of Contents1. • British Think Tanks After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis

Springer Nature Switzerland AG British Think Tanks After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the intellectual and institutional transformations of four British think tanks in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis. In the context of a crisis of expert authority, González Hernando demonstrates how these organisations modified their mode of public engagement to be seen as authoritative as possible by an ever more mistrustful public. British Think Tanks After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis connects sociological thinking on knowledge with research on policy change and the economic debate, through careful analysis of interviews, public accounts, and the ‘products’ of think tanks themselves. González Hernando argues that demands for knowledge and advice that arose after the crisis energised the work of all four think tanks while also exposing internal tensions, affecting their sources of funding, transforming their institutional structure, and shaping how they engage with their audiences. It will appeal to students and scholars of sociology of knowledge, political sociology, policy studies, economic history, communication, political economy, organisational sociology, and British politics Table of Contents1. • Understanding Politics and Society

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Understanding Politics and Society

Book SynopsisThis textbook presents political sociology as a connective social science that studies political phenomena by creating fruitful connections with other perspectives. The relationship between politics and society is more complex than ever due to the emergence of new power structures, forms of conflict organization and management, and social practices of political participation. Several scholars describe this historical phase as the 'de-politicization of representative politics'. The book addresses classical themes of and approaches to political sociology, but also dedicates several chapters to contemporary developments within political sociology, including, for instance, the role of the internet and bottom-up political communication in social movements. In addition, the volume acts as a professional tool for those scholars and researchers that are beginning to study political processes from a sociological perspective.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Politics and society1.1. • Economics and Sustainability: Social-Ecological Perspectives

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Economics and Sustainability: Social-Ecological Perspectives

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook provides an overview of economic perspectives on sustainability. It synthesises economic, ecological and interdisciplinary sustainability research and by applying an integrated social-ecological and economic framework, demonstrates how this research can be improved and implemented in practice. Split into three parts, the book begins by introducing a range of topics forming the basis of knowledge needed to understand the varying sustainability discourses in economics, ecology and interdisciplinary sustainability research. Chapters cover the political context of sustainability; the history of sustainability in European environmental discourses dating back to the seventeenth century; as well as various problems and forms of interdisciplinary knowledge integration and synthesis in the sustainability process. Part II reviews the core economic themes relevant to sustainable development including natural resource management, environmental economics and ecological economics. Also highlighted are often neglected issues such as conflicts, disasters and interrelated crises on the way towards sustainability. The chapters in Part III discuss the future of the sustainability process. They argue for the necessity of overhauling the relationship between science and practice; explore failures and the unforeseen difficulties of sustainability transformation; and discuss how to enable a long term sustainability process that reaches into the distant future. An innovative resource for a broad range of interdisciplinary programmes on sustainability. The book will be an invaluable reference for master and PhD students, instructors, researchers and practitioners in sustainability governance.Table of ContentsPart I: The sustainability process - context and scope.Chapter 1: The policy context of the sustainability discourse.Chapter 2: The historical context - sustainability in the modern society.Chapter 3: The knowledge context of the sustainability discourse.Part II: Economic and ecological knowledge in the sustainability process.Chapter 4: Economics outright - management of natural resources.Chapter 5: Environmental economics - orthodox perspectives.Chapter 6: Ecological economics - critical perspectives.Chapter 7: Conflicts, relapse and failure in the sustainability process - neglected problems.Part III: The future - sustainability transformation.Chapter 8: Changing relations of science and practice in the sustainability process.Chapter 9: Re-thinking temporal perspectives of the sustainability transformation.Chapter 10: Recreating sustainability – conjectures and conclusions.

  • Energy Use in Cities: A Roadmap for Urban Transitions

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Energy Use in Cities: A Roadmap for Urban Transitions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn an era of big data and smart cities, this book is an innovative and creative contribution to our understanding of urban energy use. Societies have basic data needs to develop an understanding of energy flows for planning energy sustainability. However, this data is often either not utilized or not available. Using California as an example, the book provides a roadmap for using data to reduce urban greenhouse gas emissions by targeting programs and initiatives that will successfully and parsimoniously improve building performance while taking into account issues of energy affordability. This first of its kind methodology maps high-detail building energy use to understand patterns of consumption across buildings, neighborhoods, and socioeconomic divisions in megacities. The book then details the steps required to replicate this methodology elsewhere, and shows the importance of openly-accessible building energy data for transitioning cities to meet the climate planning goals of the twenty-first century. It also explains why actual data, not modeled or sampled, is critical for accurate analysis and insights. Finally, it acknowledges the complex institutional context for this work and some of the obstacles – utility reluctance, public agency oversight, funding and path dependencies. This book will be of great value to scholars across the environmental sectors, but especially to those studying sustainable urban energy as well as practitioners and policy makers in these areas. Trade Review“This book covers a remarkable breadth of topics across a compact seven chapters. ... The content covered will be of interest to a wide readership, particularly policymakers and researchers in the energy, built environment and policy domains. It is accessible enough to be read by non-specialists and would be of interest to anyone working or interested in the built environment or planning and the role of individuals and individual buildings in the wider transition to net zero.” (Dominic Humphrey, Buildings & Cities, buildingsandcities.org, December 3, 2023)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: The Larger Context, Cities, Smart and Big Data.- Chapter 3: Building Energy Data Access and Aggregation Rules. • Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions: Results of SSPCR 2019—Open Access Contributions

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions: Results of SSPCR 2019—Open Access Contributions

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book offers a selection of research papers and case studies presented at the 3rd international conference “Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions”, held in December 2019 in Bolzano, Italy, and explores the concept of smart and sustainable planning, including top contributions from academics, policy makers, consultants and other professionals. Innovation processes such as co-design and co-creation help establish collaborations that engage with stakeholders in a trustworthy and transparent environment while answering the need for new value propositions. The importance of an integrated, holistic approach is widely recognized to break down silos in local government, in particular, when aimed at achieving a better integration of climate-energy planning. Despite the ongoing urbanization and polarization processes, new synergies between urban and rural areas emerge, linking development opportunities to intrinsic cultural, natural and man-made landscape values. The increasing availability of big, real-time urban data and advanced ICT facilitates frequent assessment and continuous monitoring of performances, while allowing fine-tuning as needed. This is valid not only for individual projects but also on a wider scale. In addition, and circling back to the first point, (big) urban data and ICT can be of enormous help in facilitating engagement and co-creation by raising awareness and by providing insight into the local consequences of specific plans. However, this potential is not yet fully exploited in standard processes and procedures, which can therefore lack the agility and flexibility to keep up with the pulse of the city and dynamics of society. The book provides a multi-disciplinary outlook based on experience to orient the reader in the giant galaxy of smart and sustainable planning, support the transposition of research into practice, scale up visionary approaches and design groundbreaking planning policies and tools. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Urban Socio-Economic Segregation and Income Inequality: A Global Perspective

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book investigates the link between income inequality and socio-economic residential segregation in 24 large urban regions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. It offers a unique global overview of segregation trends based on case studies by local author teams. The book shows important global trends in segregation, and proposes a Global Segregation Thesis.Rising inequalities lead to rising levels of socio-economic segregation almost everywhere in the world. Levels of inequality and segregation are higher in cities in lower income countries, but the growth in inequality and segregation is faster in cities in high-income countries. This is causing convergence of segregation trends. Professionalisation of the workforce is leading to changing residential patterns. High-income workers are moving to city centres or to attractive coastal areas and gated communities, while poverty is increasingly suburbanising. As a result, the urban geography of inequality changes faster and is more pronounced than changes in segregation levels. Rising levels of inequality and segregation pose huge challenges for the future social sustainability of cities, as cities are no longer places of opportunities for all.Table of ContentsPart 1: Introduction.- Rising inequalities and a changing social geography of cities. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Urban Morphology: An Introduction to the Study of the Physical Form of Cities

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis'This is a textbook about cities or, more precisely, about the physical form of cities. It provides an overview of the main elements of urban form—streets, street blocks, plots and buildings—structuring our cities and the fundamental agents and processes of transformation shaping these elements. It applies this analytical framework to describe the evolution of cities over history as well as to explain the functioning of contemporary cities. After the initial focus on the 'object' (cities), the book introduces how different schools of thought have been dealing with this object since the emergence of Urban Morphology, as the science of urban form, in the turning to the twentieth century. Finally, the book identifies the main contributions of urban morphology to cities, societies and economies. This second edition of the book offers updated and more accurate knowledge on several morphological issues, presents expanded contents, and it has a more explicit didactic nature, including a set of exercises in the end of each chapter, that will help teachers and students (in architecture, geography, planning, history, sociology and urban studies) in acquiring and consolidating their urban morphological knowledge.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- The elements of urban form.- The agents and processes of urban transformation.- Cities in history.- Contemporary cities.- The study of urban form: Different approaches.- From theory to practice.- Relationships with other fields of knowledge.- Conclusions.

  • Deforming the Reform: The Impact of Elites on Romania’s Post-accession Europeanization

Springer International Publishing AG Deforming the Reform: The Impact of Elites on Romania’s Post-accession Europeanization

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book presents an actor-centered study on Europeanization, based on the assumption that EU-driven reforms are highly dependent on the behavior and interests of the key domestic actors. Whether or not a state pursues a European and democratic agenda depends on domestic lawmakers. Further, political elites are pre-eminent in deciding on the nature, form and content of any law, and on the extent to which the rule of law is actually enforced. Elites can overcome structural or institutional barriers that stand in the way of achieving their goals. The empirical study on Romania presented here lends this observation a more profound meaning: it shows how, in contexts where high level corruption is the norm rather than the exception, self-serving political elites cannot be expected to genuinely commit to adopting sound anti-corruption reform. The book is an inquiry into the motivations that drive legislators to make particular decisions, but also into the structural characteristics and dynamics of the elite that invite a selfish rather than responsible and responsive behaviour. This publication was supported by funds from the Publication Fund for Open Access Monographs of the Federal State of Brandenburg, Germany.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisInstitutions are rules that are supported by various enforcement mechanisms. Cognition refers to the process of how men perceive and process information, whereas rationality refers to how these processes are modelled. Within institutional economics there is a growing scepticism towards extending the conventional economic frame of analysis to institutions. In particular, the notion of perfect rationality is increasingly questioned. At the same time human cognition has become a major field of research in psychology. This book explores what institutional economics can learn from cognitive psychology regarding the proper modelling of rationality in order to explain institutional change.Table of ContentsPreface.- D. This book offers a broader ethical perspective on digital game cultures, presenting theoretical and empirical work on the ethical dimensions of the development, production and distribution of digital games, as well as issues relating to responsible gaming and the pedagogical use of digital games. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Philanthropic Foundations and Social Welfare: A Comparative Study of Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom (England)

Book SynopsisThe existing welfare regime literature identifies differences in welfare state systems. Sarah Förster asks, if we can learn something on the organizational level about the embedding of philanthropic foundations in the field of social welfare in different welfare state systems. This investigation is based on comparative insights from the three country cases of Germany, Sweden and the UK (England). Guided by propositions from theoretical analysis of welfare regime literature, comparative explorative case studies based on interview data and secondary sources give insights into the field and the embedding of philanthropic social welfare foundations in the three different welfare state systems. Each type of foundation has different levels of independence from external constraints and is embedded to different degrees according to the propositions from welfare regime theory. These differences hold further implications for the investigation of foundations as a special organizational form.Table of ContentsResearch Problem and Broader Research Context.- Welfare Regimes and the Underlying Logic of Country Differences.- Plan of Inquiry.- Country Case Studies.- Regime Influence, Theoretical Propositions.

  • The Independent Variable Problem: Welfare Stateness as an Explanatory Concept

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden The Independent Variable Problem: Welfare Stateness as an Explanatory Concept

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access publication deals with the operationalisation of the welfare state as an independent variable. To study how welfare states affect social inequality, individual behaviour, attitudes and more in different countries, an empirical operationalisation of the welfare state or specific elements of social policy is required. However, this operationalisation is fraught with some important problems. These problems essentially relate to one point: while there are a large number of contributions dealing with the measurement of differences between welfare states per se and as a dependent variable, there is a lack of feasible recommendations for a standardised operationalisation of welfare stateness as an independent variable. So far, there has been no systematic investigation of how such different approaches may affect the results and their comparability. Also missing is an in-depth conceptual discussion of which features of the welfare state are particularly relevant for explaining certain effects. This book fills both gaps. First, it exposes the pitfalls of existing approaches and shows how much empirical results can vary depending on the operationalisation chosen. Second, it proposes a framework for a standardised conceptualisation and operationalisation of social policies as independent variables that constrains operational decisions in a theoretically meaningful way.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Premises: perspectives on the welfare state.- The welfare state as an independent variable: debates, pitfalls, potentials.- Literature review: mechanisms and hypotheses.- Welfare stateness as an explanatory concept.- Welfare stateness as an explanatory variable: empirical illustration.- Towards solving the independent variable problem.- Reference.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the context of the (digital) transformation of economy and society, the technology acceptance of the population is increasingly influenced by a perceived loss of control through new technologies. Loss of control is defined in this volume as a multi-causal, multi-modal and cyclical process of transition of control and conceptually brought together in a multi-dimensional heuristic model. The results of a first quantitative-empirical analysis for Baden-Württemberg based on this model confirm that loss of control is a central factor influencing technology acceptance, but is perceived differently by different socio-demographic groups.Table of ContentsTechnology Acceptance in Germany and Baden-Württemberg: State of the Debate.- Loss of control and technology acceptance.- Empirical framework: The #techourfuture project initiative.- Evaluation of the results.

  • “Intention is not method, belief is not evidence”: Civic Education and Prevention with Former Right-Wing Extremists in German Schools

Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden “Intention is not method, belief is not evidence”: Civic Education and Prevention with Former Right-Wing Extremists in German Schools

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor over 20 years, school interventions involving former right-wing extremists have been popular in Germany. In practice, they are advertised and conducted as both civic education and extremism prevention. This book uses an evidence-based and interdisciplinary approach to examine the potentials and challenges of this format. It provides a thematic embedding of German application, a comprehensive review of attributed impact assumptions and the state of related research. Furthermore, this research offers highly valuable, unique and comprehensive insights based on empirical evidence. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the format and its complexity. Overall, the findings give no clear indication that the involvement of former right-wing extremists in schools initiate civic education processes or prevent political extremism. Rather, the investigation found fundamental needs for additional research, modification, and sensitization. In this vein, this book makes a pioneer contribution to quality assurance and evaluation research in civic education and extremism prevention.Table of ContentsStructure of the book.- Synopsis.

  • University of KwaZulu-Natal Press Real and imagined readers: Censorship, publishing and reading under apartheid

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisReal and Imagined Readers looks at an important period in South African literary history, marked by apartheid censorship and the extensive banning of intellectual and creative voices. Returning to the archive, this book offers a reader-centric view of the successive censorship laws, and the consequences of publication control on the world of books. Books and print culture created intersectional spaces of solidarity where ideas and knowledge were contested, mediated and translated into the socio-political domain. By focusing on these marginalised readers, Matteau Matsha sheds light on the reading cultures and practices that developed in the shadow of apartheid censorship, creating alternative literary spaces. Real readers engaged in an elusive dialogue with the censors’ imagined readers, and definitions of literature and readerships emerged from this unusual connection, leading to the formation of literary conventions that inform reading politics to this day. By understanding reading as a complex and dynamic activity, this book stresses the importance of appreciating books in relation to the social context in which they are written and, most importantly, read.Trade Review“This is a fascinating account of the dynamics in the publishing industry of that time. It is a salutary reminder of what has gone before and what should not be lost in the muddle of the turmoil in the political sphere today.” — Christine Stilwell, emeritus professor, UKZN and former acting director of the Centre for African Literary Studies in Pietermaritzburg

  • Zulu Names, Polygyny and Gender Politics In Traditional Societies

University of KwaZulu-Natal Press Zulu Names, Polygyny and Gender Politics In Traditional Societies

Book SynopsisZulu Names, Polygyny and Gender Politics in Traditional Societies provides illuminating insight into Zulu polygynous families. It examines how Zulu anthroponyms used in respect of the living-dead reflect social behaviour patterns within homesteads. Names become social outlets for sentiments of hostility and ill-feelings caused by quarrels between co-wives and in-laws. Zungu considers the challenge of plural marriages and the use of witchcraft to fight for the husband's love and affection. Names are also used to reflect and ward off evil spirits, which may cause illness and death. Despite the influence of globalisation and modernity, anthroponyms reflect mystical arts and occultism (whether real or imagined) in traditional societies, and they are effective oral strategies between family members and/or community members.
