    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor 25 years, Gay Byrne received thousands of letters from listeners all over Ireland. Some of these letters were light-hearted and innocent, but others were more challenging. While many people didn't feel comfortable sharing their issues with their closest family and friends, they felt that they could trust Gay. And, so, they wrote in their droves With his trademark balance of compassion, empathy and humour, Gay read out letters on subjects such as women's rights, domestic and institutional abuse, mental health and homosexuality, sparking nationwide conversation and debate. The letters here have been lovingly compiled by Gay's daughter Suzy, who provides commentary about the impact they made, on a personal and national level, once they were read on air.Dear Gay is a sweeping handwritten history of a radically changed Ireland and a fitting tribute to Ireland's best-loved broadcaster.

Book SynopsisMedical confidentiality is universally recognised as a value worth protecting. However, difficulties arise when confidential medical information becomes relevant in the context of crime prevention and criminal prosecution. Should medical confidentiality be upheld where the physician holds information which is essential for the investigation of a serious crime; for establishing the truth in a criminal trial; for an accused's defence; or for the prevention of a criminal offence? And according to which criteria should such decisions be made? Based on an examination of different approaches in medical ethics and a comparison of the relevant law of France, Germany, England and Wales and the US, this book analyses how a balance of the competing interests can best be struck.Trade Review'...clearly well written and researched...' Crime Prevention and International Safety: An International Journal '...remarkable as much for the quality of its developments as the pertinence of its comparative analysis of French, German English and American legislations...this work will be valued for its didactic nature, as exemplified by the brief conclusions and syntheses that punctuate each chapter, and its pragmatic vision.' Taylor & Francis Islamic Gunpowder Empires

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIslamic Gunpowder Empires provides readers with a history of Islamic civilization in the early modern world through a comparative examination of Islam's three greatest empires: the Ottomans (centered in what is now Turkey), the Safavids (in modern Iran), and the Mughals (ruling the Indian subcontinent). Author Douglas Streusand explains the origins of the three empires; compares the ideological, institutional, military, and economic contributors to their success; and analyzes the causes of their rise, expansion, and ultimate transformation and decline. Streusand depicts the three empires as a part of an integrated international system extending from the Atlantic to the Straits of Malacca, emphasizing both the connections and the conflicts within that system. He presents the empires as complex polities in which Islam is one political and cultural component among many. The treatment of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires incorporates contemporary scholarship, dispels comTrade Review"With Islamic Gunpowder Empires, Douglas Streusand has contributed a masterful comparative analysis and an up-to-date reinterpretation of the significance of the early modern Islamic empires. This book makes profound scholarly insights readily accessible to undergraduate students and will be useful in world history surveys as well as more advanced courses." -Hope Benne, Salem State College "Streusand creatively reexamines the military and political history and structures of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires. He breaks down the process of transformation and makes their divergent outcomes comprehensible, not only to an audience of specialists, but also to undergraduates and general readers. Appropriate for courses in world, early modern, or Middle Eastern history as well as the political sociology of empires." -Linda T. Darling, University of Arizona "Streusand does a very good job of narrating and describing these three empires, despite their unique sets of conditions and characteristics. He is to be commended for navigating these hearty and substantial historiographies to pull together an analytical textbook which will be both informative and thought provoking for the undergraduate university audience." -Colin Mitchell, Dalhousie University "Douglas Streusand has brilliantly complemented, filled out, and updated Marshall Hodgson's pioneering study of the Islamic gunpowder empires of the early modern era. This is an absolute 'must' for students of early modern world history, especially those who focus on political and military structures." -Alfred J. Andrea, Professor Emeritus of Medieval History, University of Vermont; Past-President, World History Association "Islamic Gunpowder Empires is a significant contribution. We now have a scholarly, but concise, history filling what is usually a gap in World, Eurasian, and Middle-Eastern texts for middle and upper level undergraduate courses ... [Douglas E. Streusand] restores action and reaction to the imperial and provincial leaders, who emerge as anything but the doctrinaire, 'lock-step' authorities presiding over inevitably expanding states, which many histories portray... Taylor & Francis Reimagining Mobilities across the Humanities

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisVolume 1: Theories, Methods and Ideas explores the mobility of ideas through time and space and how interdisciplinary theories and methodological approaches used in mobilities studies can be profitably utilised within the humanities and social sciences. Through a series of short chapters, mobility is employed as an elastic, inclusive and multifaceted concept across various disciplines to shed light on a geographically and chronologically broad range of issues and case studies. In doing so, the concept of mobility is positioned as a powerful catalyst for historical change and as a fruitful approach to research in the humanities and social sciences.Like its sister volume, this volume is edited and written by members of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Mobility and the Humanities (MoHu) at the Department of Historical and Geographical Sciences and The Ancient World (DiSSGeA) of the University of Padua, Italy. Book SynopsisThe path taken by German philosophy in the twentieth century is one of the most exciting and controversial in the history of human thought, by turns radical and conservative and secular and religious. In this outstanding introduction, German Philosophy in the Twentieth Century: Dilthey to Honneththe third and final volume in his trilogyJulian Young examines the work of eight German philosophers and theologians of the period. He discusses their engagement with the deepest existential questions, their critique of the rationalization and mechanization of modernity, and their commitment to varying forms of liberalism, socialism, and democracy.Young introduces and assesses the thought of the following figures: Wilhelm Dilthey: the need for worldviews', and the distinction between explanation' and understanding' as a bulwark against the reduction of human beings to scientific quanta Karl Jaspers: existentialism, the challenge of nihilism,Trade Review"Preceded by volumes covering Weber to Habermas and Lukács to Strauss,(published in 2018 and 2020) this third and final volume of Young’s German Philosophy in the Twentieth Century examines eight philosophers and theologians who once were, but no longer are, central to the pressing philosophical debates of the 20th century. ... Taylor & Francis Economics Anthropology and the Origin of Money as

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor many decades economists have disputed with economic anthropologists over the origins of money. Economists claim that money emerged from barter exchange; anthropologists claim that it originated as a âunit of accountâ in the temples and palaces of ancient Mesopotamia. This book argues that money originated as a bargaining counter in a system of money-bargaining, emerging almost seamlessly from barter-bargaining. This is not the âmoneyâ of mainstream economic conception â a âveilâ cast over a system of resource allocation defined in mathematical terms.Confidence in the bargaining counter is sustained through âsupport-bargaining,â a process in which individuals seek the support of their associates but seek at the same time to advance their own interests. A comprehensive âIntroduction to Support-Bargaining and Money-Bargainingâ is provided by the work. The arrival of coin-money is recognised by many as a crucial event in the history of mankind, and it is argued here that the

Taylor & Francis Dialogues on Religionand its Study

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisDialogues on Religionâand its Study creatively revives a time-honored genre by offering a series of new speeches on religion (its definition, description, comparison, and explanation) between two old friends who periodically meet throughout the year. Eventually working their way to examining why we tend to call part of our world and our experiences religious, nonspecialist readers can eavesdrop on their conversations, gaining entry to a series of timely, interesting, and sometimes surprisingly complex topicsâwhich all begins with one of them coming across a curious news story on their phone.Treating these dialogues as if they were found objects, the book then also joins in a long tradition of critical editions by offering a scholarly introduction to the speeches along with a detailed commentary on both the technical items mentioned as well as the various cultural references that our speakers find to be familiar and then use to think through material thatâs rather newâat the same time providing clues as to their identities and location. Written in the vernacular, with a helpful postface that some may wish to read first, Dialogues on Religionâand its Study is original, engaging, and at times funny while always meeting readers where they sometimes are: just a little intrigued by something theyâve discovered and wishing that they could discuss it with a good friend, maybe meeting for coffee or over breakfast at a diner.

Taylor & Francis Ideology and Form in Yan Liankeâs Fiction

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisXie analyzes three novels by the international award-winning Chinese writer Yan Lianke and investigates how his signature âœmythorealistâ form produces textual meanings that subvert the totalizing reality prescribed by literary realism. The term mythorealism, which Yan coined to describe his own writing style, refers to a set of literary devices that incorporate both Chinese and Western literary elements while remaining primarily grounded in Chinese folk culture and literary tradition. In his use of mythorealism, carrying a burden of social critique that cannot allow itself to become âœpolitical,â Yan transcends the temporality and provinciality of immediate social events and transforms his potential socio-political commentaries into more diversified concerns for humanity, existential issues, and spiritual crisis. Xie identifies three modes of mythorealist narrative exemplified in Yanâs three novels: the minjian (folk) mode in Dream of Ding Village, the allusive

  • Theory Conspiracy

Taylor & Francis Ltd Theory Conspiracy

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTheory Conspiracy provides a state-of-the-art collection that takes stage on the meeting and/or battlegrounds between conspiracy theory and theory-asconspiracy. By deliberately scrambling the syntaxconspiracy theory cum theory conspiracyit seeks to open a set of reflections on the articulation between theory and conspiracy that addresses how conspiracy might rattle the sense of theory as such. In this sense, the volume also inevitably stumbles on the recent debates on postcritique. The suspicion that our ways of reading in the humanities have been far too suspicious, if not paranoid, has gained considerable attention in a humanities continuously questioned as superfluous at best and leftist and dangerous at worst. The chapters in this volume all approach this problematic from different angles. It features clear engaging writing by a set of contributors who have published extensively on questions of paranoia, conspiracy theory, and/or the state of theory today. This collection Trade Review'Conspiracy theories are shallow but run deep—borne of antiquity, perfected in modernity, and ubiquitous today as virtual intellectualisms of the most paranoid kind. They are a perverse philosophy of history about who controls what, or what controls whom. They concern less the 'Other' than the 'They.' For all these reasons and more, this volume is ever so urgent. In their impressively erudite and lively essays, the authors convened here demonstrate that committed reading is the only means we have to understand conspiracy theory in all of its bewildering plurality. They show you how to think conspiracies from within in order to critique them from without. Essential reading is an understatement to describe Theory Conspiracy.'Andrew Cole, Princeton University, USA'This highly engaging, original and timely collection of essays confronts the problems of living in an era of theory overload, a world in which images and figures cohere into elaborate accounts of how we live now. Even if those accounts don’t match reality, they nevertheless expose something of the Real. The events explored in this book—from Trump to Gilets Jaunes—are more worthy of critique, more fascinating, and more illuminating than the banalities of actuality. Book SynopsisSacred Snaps tells the story of a new approach to interfaith engagement. It is an invitation to see and engage religion, diversity, and inclusion through the lens of the mobile phone camera. These days, just about everyone owns a camera equipped cell phone. What if we recruited these cameras for the common good? When religion shows up in everyday lifeâat work, school, the mall, or the beachâoften it is not welcome. At a time when so much of the public discourse is around equity, diversity, and inclusion, religion seems peripheral to the conversation. Many embrace the wisdom that our workplaces, schools, and communities are enhanced when people can bring their whole selves into every aspect of their daily lives. But religion and spirituality are not gaining the same ground as other aspects of diversity such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and ability. To be more fully included in the cultural conversation about human flourishing, religion needs to be seen and heard in n

Book SynopsisThis is a comprehensive collection of original essays that explore the aesthetics, economics, and mechanics of movie adaptation, from the days of silent cinema to contemporary franchise phenomena.Trade Review“Overall, the essays in this collection deal with diverse topics and theoretical concerns of adaptation studies today. They throw light on both often researched and neglected or undervalued works.” (Poetics Today, 1 May 2015) “Well-written, suggestively arranged in a series of six sections, A Companion to Literature, Film and Adaptation provides an invaluable resource for anyone interested in debates about the past, present and future of adaptation studies, and why the discipline represents an important advance in the field of interdisciplinary learning … Cartmell’s collection covers just about every area imaginable within adaptation studies, whether historical, theoretical or otherwise … [It] is a far cry from those collections that simply compare source with target texts; it encompasses comic-books, songs, silent cinema as well as more canonical texts and their cinematic variants. There is something for everyone in this volume.” (Post Script, 2014) "Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above." This book makes sophisticated ideas accessible at an introductory level, and examines the analytic tools of scholars in religious studies, as well as in related disciplines that have shaped the field including anthropology, history, literature, and critical studies in race, sexuality, and gender. Each chapter is written by a leading scholar and includes: the biographical and historical context of each theorist their approaches and key writings analysis and evaluation of each theory suggested further reading.Part One: Comparative Approaches considers how major features such as taboo, texts, myths and ritual work across religious traditions by exploring the work of Mary Douglas, Phyllis Trible, Wendy Doniger and Catherine Bell. Part Two: Examining Particularities analyzes the comparative approach through the work of Alice Walker, Trade Review[An] important resource for any religious studies course that includes a theoretical dimension. * Nova Religio *The two volumes directly complement one another and are both written with prose and arguments that are accessible to students with no prior knowledge of the field of religious studies. As such, this is an ideal text for introductory courses in religion. * Religious Studies Review *Serving as brief intellectual-biographical histories, these essays illumine the preoccupations and priorities that have motivated influential scholars’s work. While the text is not a required counterpart for the Reader, the editors note that its contributions profitably locate the span of its contents within personal and historiographical worlds, opening an aperture for students to further reflect on their own locations and the disciplinary contexts in which these texts are situated. It is also worth noting that these essays deserve careers of their own as documents of intellectual history and could be usefully assigned together or apart in graduate as well as undergraduate seminars. * Reading Religion *A fresh, concise introduction to some of the most important theorists of religion in recent decades. A must for future courses on theoretical approaches to the discipline. * Laurie Maffly-Kipp, Archer Alexander Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, Washington University in St. Louis, USA *What distinguishes this introduction from its more traditional predecessors is its robust insistence that neither the lived experience nor the study of religion can be separated from issues of cultural context, power, and identity. The result is an innovative guide to the field that models the relation of theory and praxis. * Mark A. Chancey, Professor of Religious Studies, Southern Methodist University, USA *I cannot endorse this highly enough. Many introductions to religion and culture claim a fresh perspective, but Bloesch and Minister give so much more in this accessible and exciting volume. Religious Studies students need ?Cultural Approaches to Studying Religion. * Dawn Llewellyn, Senior Lecturer in Christian Studies and Deputy Director of the Institute of Gender Studies, University of Chester, UK *This is the book so many have asked for in secret. Keeping up with the widening field is an increasingly difficult task. Finally there’s a way to fill in some of the gaps. It reminds readers that the study of religion isn’t a genuflection to past thinkers but a generative, ongoing conversation. And you’ll want to take part! * Richard Newton, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, The University of Alabama, USA *This volume not only fills a glaring lacuna in the available handbooks, it breathes new life into the theory and methods course in religious studies. * Kent L. Book SynopsisThe West feels lost. Brexit, Trump, the coronavirus: we hurtle from one crisis to another, lacking definition, terrified that our best days are behind us. The central argument of this book is that we can only face the future with hope if we have a proper sense of tradition political, social and religious. We ignore our past at our peril. The problem, argues Tim Stanley, is that the Western tradition is anti-tradition, that we have a habit of discarding old ways and old knowledge, leaving us uncertain how to act or, even, of who we really are.In this wide-ranging book, we see how tradition can be both beautiful and useful, from the deserts of Australia to the court of nineteenth-century Japan. Some of the concepts defended here are highly controversial in the modern West: authority, nostalgia, rejection of self and the hunt for spiritual transcendence. We''ll even meet a tribe who dress up their dead relatives and invite them to tea. Stanley illustrateTrade ReviewThis is a rich and reflective book, based on wide reading and personal experience. * Literary Review *Whatever Happened to Tradition? is stuffed with marvellous vignettes… the reader is left feeling grateful for the abundance of knowledge and the ebullient conviction with which it is shared. -- Allison Pearson * Telegraph *The writer he most resembles is Roger Scruton… Since Scruton died last year, there is a vacancy for a political philosopher who will defend the traditions of this nation with all his heart and all his considerable brain. Book SynopsisArchbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sets out a radical vision for 21st century Britain in this updated paperback edition. It is now two years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the pandemic and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby''s book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain. The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident and thus badly or deliberately. He explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public, and mental), housing and education. To these he adds family; the environment; economicTrade ReviewTimely, wise, humane, positive – just what is needed to focus the national debate on shared values and creating a better future, particularly for the half of the country left behind by ‘modernisation’ and ‘globalisation.’ -- Lord Andrew AdonisJustin Welby’s voice is powerful and distinctive. He writes with verve and insight. Reimagining Britain is a work of supreme timeliness. -- Lord Peter Hennessy of NympsfieldA brave, passionate and provocative case for community, courage and stability, not simply as concepts for debate but as foundations for practical change – for ourselves, for each other and for those we will never meet. -- Loretta Minghella, OBEWith an astonishing range of understanding and a perspective both global and granular, Justin Welby identifies values that are true to our heritage and fertile for our hope ... Archbishop Ramsey once told priests to be ‘with God with the people on your heart’; here Archbishop Welby is with God with the nation on his heart, and the result is rigour and compassion in equal measure. -- The Revd Dr Sam Wells...this call to a strong sense of national narrative, collective responsibility and a shared moral code is both powerful and timely. -- Rabbi Lord Jonathan SacksThis is a book bristling with energy and ideas. Written against a wide canvas of historical narrative and critique, it is a fast-moving appeal for the fashioning of deeper virtue, expressed in action, in the form of a shared narrative of our identity and purpose. -- Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of WestminsterThis courageous and perceptive call to mobilise for the common good of Britain comes at a crucial time. No other leader has offered such a powerful combination of realism, depth and practical priorities. -- David F. Ford OBE, Regius Professor of Divinity, University of CambridgeBigger than politics and broader than religion – a timely and inspiring read that requires response -- Paula Vennells, Chief Executive of the Post OfficeAn important contribution to understanding how the UK can not only move forward but flourish by reimagining its narrative of hope. -- Bishop Dame Sarah Mullally, Bishop-elect of LondonThe archbishop of Canterbury’s blueprint for a revitalised nation draws on values that cross religious and secular divides … Welby’s book lifts our doleful eyes above the morass of Brexit to state some crucial truths. * Guardian *[A] beautifully written and accessible account of Britain in a post-Brexit world, which starts from a point of hope, openness and generosity of spirit as well as a belief in the power of politicians to create the conditions for a self-confident and outward-looking country. * The Tablet *This is a bold, visionary book which deserves to be widely read * Methodist Recorder *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction PART ONE: WHY AND HOW TO REIMAGINE 1 Building on Our History PART TWO: THE BASIC BUILDING BLOCKS 2 Family - Caring for the Core 3 Education - Life in All Its Fullness 4 Health - and Healing Our Brokenness 5 Housing - the Architecture of Community 6 Economics and Finance - Serving and Inspiring PART THREE: VALUES AND GLOBAL CHANGE 7 The World Around Us 8 Immigration and Integration 9 For Those As Yet Unborn - Solidarity with the Future 10 The Key Actors 11 The Churches and Other Faith Groups - Healthy Disruptors Conclusion Acknowledgements Index

Book SynopsisOnline dating has become a widespread feature of modern social life. In less than two decades, seeking partners through commercial intermediaries went from being a marginal and stigmatized practice to being a common activity. How can we explain this rapid change and what does it tell us about the changing nature of love and sexuality? In contrast to those who praise online dating as a democratization of love and those who condemn it as a commodification of intimacy, this book tells a different story about how and why online dating became big. The key to understanding the growing prevalence of digital dating lies in what Marie Bergström calls “the privatization of intimacy.” Online dating takes courtship from the public to the private sphere and makes it a domestic and individual practice. Unlike courtship in traditional settings such as school, work, and gatherings of family and friends, online dating makes a clear distinction between social and sexual sociability and renders dating much more discrete. Apparently banal, this privatizing feature is fundamental for understanding both the success and the nature of digital matchmaking. Bergström also sheds light on the persisting inequalities of intimate life, showing that online dating is neither free nor fair: it has its winners and losers and it differs significantly according to gender, age and social class. Drawing on a wide range of empirical material, this book challenges what we think we know about online dating and gives us a new understanding of who, why, and how people go online to seek sex and love.Trade Review“A refreshing lack of hysteria about the impact the internet has had on our sex lives.”The Guardian“The New Laws of Love is an insightful deep dive into the world of digitally mediated dating. Bergström eloquently and convincingly navigates a nuanced path between moral decline theses on the one side and uncritical celebrations of online dating on the other, to reach evidence-based conclusions and analyses.”Brady Robards, Monash UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgments List of Figures List of Surveys Introduction PART 1 The Privatization of Dating Chapter 1. Book SynopsisAll forms of recreational digital consumption – whether on smartphones, tablets, game consoles or TVs – have skyrocketed in the younger generations. From the age of 2, children in the West clock up more than 2.5 hours of screen time a day; by the time they reach 13, it’s more than 7 hours a day. Added up over the first 18 years of life, this is the equivalent of almost 30 school years, or 15 years of full-time employment. Most media experts do not seem overly concerned about this situation: children are adaptable, they say, they are ‘digital natives’, their brains have changed and screens make them smarter. But other specialists – including some paediatricians, psychiatrists, teachers and speech therapists – dispute these claims, and many parents worry about the long-term consequences of their children’s intensive exposure to screens. Michel Desmurget, a leading neuroscientist, has carefully weighed up the scientific evidence concerning the impact of the digital activities of our children and adolescents, and his assessment does not make for happy reading: he shows that these activities have significant detrimental consequences in terms of the health, behaviour and intellectual abilities of young people, and strongly affect their academic outcomes. A wake-up call for anyone concerned about the long-term impacts of our children’s over-exposure to screens.Trade Review“Let us add this brisk and persuasive work by Michel Desmurget to the necessary list of books warning against the impact of screens on the young. He gives the digiphiles exactly the credit they deserve for having peddled to our kids the tools that clog their heads and seize their eyes. His portrait of the toddler at the screen is frightening, of the teen “submerged” in media dismaying, and he busts one happy myth after another. This is a sober caution to parents, teachers and other supervisors of the young.”Mark Bauerlein, author of The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future“Desmurget advances vitally important points.”City JournalTable of ContentsIntroduction: whom should we believe? Book SynopsisIn the 2010s, as chat apps became a primary mode of communication for many people across the world, WhatsApp quickly outpaced rival messaging apps and developed into a platform. In this book, the authors provide a comprehensive account of WhatsApp’s global growth. Charting WhatsApp’s evolution from its founding in 2009 to the present day, they argue that WhatsApp has been transformed from a simple, ‘gimmickless’ app into a global communication platform. Understanding this development can shed light on the trajectory of Meta’s industrial development, and how digital economies and social media landscapes are evolving with the rise of ‘superapps’. This book explores how WhatsApp’s unique characteristics mediate new kinds of social and commercial transactions; how they pose new opportunities and challenges for platform regulation, civic participation and democracy; and how they give rise to new kinds of digital literacy as WhatsApp becomes integrated into everyday digital cultures across the globe. Accessibly written, this book is an essential resource for students and scholars of digital media, cultural studies, and media and communications.Trade Review‘Fascinating and authoritative. Book SynopsisIn this short book, the leading German cultural critic Diedrich Diederichsen puts forward a fresh and original account of pop music. He argues that pop music is not so much a form of music as a constellation of different media channels, social spaces and behavioural systems, of which music is only a part. Its own logic of attraction is based less on compositions and the expression of subjectivity and more on indexicality, real or pseudo-involuntary effects as recorded by sound technologies, and on studio discipline and staging, and hence on performance. By elaborating his innovative account of pop music as a constellation, Diederichsen develops a theory that distinguishes itself from sociology, cultural studies, media studies and ethnography, while at the same time drawing on and encompassing them all.Trade Review‘Diedrich Diederichsen’s book presents itself as a rigorous study of pop music considered as a thing in itself. That it is. But then you turn what seems to be a predictable corner and find yourself ambushed by sly humour, playfulness, a willingness to place large analytical bets on what seem to be slim chances. The book is filled with trap doors which open up again and again.’Greil Marcus, author of Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the 20th Century‘Diedrich Diederichsen is an always compelling analyst of pop and rock music across all its many genres, and Aesthetics of Pop Music sheds new light on the capacities, identities and meanings of the form.’Michael Bracewell, author of England is Mine: Pop Life in Albion from Wilde to Goldie‘an engaging read… With arguments from the Frankfurt school, examples of performers ranging from the 1950s to the twenty-first century, discussion of modern technical recording methods, and commentary on social media, Aesthetics of Pop Music will appeal to a variety of readers, particularly those in multimedia and cultural studies'Journal of the Society for Musicology in IrelandTable of ContentsPreface I. Book SynopsisWestern culture has ‘faith’ in the labour market as a test of the worth of each individual. For those who are out of work, welfare is now less of a support than a means of purification and redemption. Continuously reformed by the left and right in politics, the contemporary welfare state attempts to transform the unemployed into active jobseekers, punishing non-compliance. Drawing on ideas from economic theology, this provocative book uncovers deep-rooted religious concepts and shows how they continue to influence contemporary views of work and unemployment: Jobcentres resemble purgatory where the unemployed attempt to redeem themselves, jobseeking is a form of pilgrimage in hope of salvation, and the economy appears as providence, whereby trials and tribulations test each individual. This book will be essential reading for those interested in the sociology and anthropology of modern economic life. Lesbian and bi culture is ever-changing and here, journalist Daisy Jones unpicks outdated stereotypes and shows how, over the past few years, the style and shared language of queer women has slowly infiltrated the mainstream. (Think less hemp sandals, IKEA trips and nut milks and more freedom, expression, community. And Cate Blanchett.)From the dingy basement clubs of east London to the unchartered realms of TikTok, cutting in DIY mullets and christening Meryl Streep 'Daddy', Daisy explores the multifaceted nature of what it means to be lesbian or bi today, while also looking back and celebrating the past. The book shines a light on the never-ending process of coming out, what it's like to date as a queer woman, how physical nightlife spaces have evolved into online communities and the reasons why mental health issues have disproportionately impacted LGBTQ+ people. As someone immersed in the queer culture of women, Daisy brings both the personal perspective and a journalistic one to this changing landscape. Through interviews and lived experience, a cohesive image emerges: one which shows that being lesbian, bi, or anything in between, isn't necessarily always tied to gender, sexual practice or even romantic attraction. With verve, humour and razor-sharp prose, Daisy paints a vital and insightful modern day portrait of what it means to be a queer woman in the 21st century.

Book SynopsisNew Directions in Criminological Theory focuses on new approaches to theory construction, with particular emphasis on reformulations and new applications of existing paradigms. It includes an assessment of labeling theory, demonstrating how the approach could become part of a more comprehensive explanation of crime. A case is made for studying crime in terms of the social context in which crimes are conceived, interpreted, and negotiated. The debate between crime-general and crime-specific approaches is further amplified. A rethinking of Hirschi's control theory is presented. The volume includes theoretical discussions of spouse abuse, of punishment, and of power-control models. Additional chapters examine theoretical advances in corporate illegality, employee theft, and the alcohol/crime syndrome. These original contributions include: Charles F. Wellford and Ruth A.
