  • Queer Encounters with Communist Power:

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Queer Encounters with Communist Power:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the repressive context of East European Communist regimes, how did young girls and boys come to realize their sexuality? What did they do with that self-awareness--and later on, as adults, what strategies did they employ in their dealings with the regime? Queer Encounters with Communist Power answers these questions as it interweaves a groundbreaking queer oral history project with meticulous, original research into the discourse on homosexuality and transsexuality in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1989. Contrary to expectations, the book reveals that despite the Czechoslovak Communist regime's brutality in many areas of life, the state did not carry out a hateful or seditious campaign against homosexual and non-heterosexual people. Rather, the official state sexology offices functioned from the late 1970s onward as essentially the first gay clubs in socialist Czechoslovakia. Interweaving the memories of non-heterosexual Czech women born between 1929 and 1952, Vera Sokolov 's study both enriches and challenges existing scholarship on lesbian and gay history during this era, promising to radically change the way we view gender, sexuality, and everyday life during East European socialism.Trade Review"Sokolov 's work is an excellent study in the contradictions of state socialism. Her oral history of non-heterosexual people and Czech sexologists showcases how policy pressure toward homogeneity and suppression of individuality and otherness was countered by expert discourse and practice."--Libora Oates-Indruchov , University of Graz "Queer Encounters offers many . . . counterintuitive surprises. Sokolov finds that the socialist Czechoslovak state did not target homosexuals for persecution. In fact, the offices of sexologists became in the 1970s places for gay, trans, and lesbian men and women to hang out. Most surprisingly, Sokolov argues that by refusing to diagnose and name 'homosexuality' in Czechoslovak society, the state gave individuals the freedom to choose their own sexual identities and genders and to live them out in fascinating ways. Based on oral history and archival research, Queer Encounters will change the way we view socialist culture."--Kate Brown, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Karolinum,Nakladatelstvi Univerzity Karlovy,Czech Republic Homelessness among Older Adults in Prague:

Book SynopsisFollowing their engaging study Homelessness among Young People in Prague, the authors of this book turn their attention to an older population facing the same issue, a very different situation since these older adults grew up under a communist regime where an obligation to work was enshrined in law and living on the street could result in a prison sentence. Based on three years of research, this book provides a slew of data-based statistical insights, analyzing the efficacy of relief provided by both the state and nonprofit organizations, detailing how the clients of such organizations rate their services, to what extent they accept assistance, and whether they believe it has helped them. More importantly, it features extensive interviews with real people, making it the first Czech book on this issue to present homelessness from the perspective of those who live with it every day. • Events Over Endeavours – Image of the Chinese in

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Events Over Endeavours – Image of the Chinese in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe contemporary Chinese engagement in Africa dates back to the 1950's, and it has gained momentum in the last two decades. The Chinese presence in African countries has been getting more and more visible; not only the number of Chinese investments in the area and international agreements has been increasing, but also the size of the Chinese diaspora in the region has grown. China has been looking for new sources of natural resources and markets on which the 'made in China' goods would be welcomed, therefore it spares no efforts to establish and maintain possibly good relationships with Africa, especially with political elites of African countries. At first, the Chinese expansion was supported by the country's image of an older brother, a co-victim of the Western domination, and a example to be followed on the the path leading to development. This image, however, has started to be covered with some spots and shadows, caused by various Chinese activities. In this book we aimed to sketch the image of China and the Chinese in Zambia and Angola, presented by textual media and citizens of these countries, and to trace the most important factors influencing it. Moreover, we brought up some possible consequences of the prevalence of a particular – positive or negative – image for the future development of the Chinese expansion in the region. To obtain the possibly detailed image, we decided to combine quantitative and qualitative analysis of media content with results of our field work conducted in Africa.Trade ReviewThe study is focused on the extraordinarily important topical problem of the Chinese expansion in Africa. Both the applied innovative methodology and the new approach towards the Sino-African relations, focused on the perception of the Chinese presence in the region, are the factors that distinguish this work. […] As the authors themselves state, in the summary they try to avoid drawing generalising conclusions; rather, they focus on pointing out the differences in the perception of China and the Chinese between Angola and Zambia. Acknowledging the increasing importance of the perception of China and the Chinese in Africa as an important factor influencing Sino-African relations constitutes the most valuable conclusion of the study. -- Prof. Dominik Mierzejewski, University of Lodz

  • Participatory Social Work – Research, Practice,

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Participatory Social Work – Research, Practice,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs contemporary social work is challenged on the one hand by increasing and multidimensional social diversity and, on the other hand, an increasing emphasis on building a civil society based on activity, equality, and participation, the demand for research and debates relating to a participatory social work paradigm has been raised. Its rapid development is manifested not only by a theoretical shift or introduction of new research techniques and methods, but most of all by empowerment of the service users. It has given an impetus to the emergence of participatory research teams or, in the more radical viewpoints, to the gradual de-academization of both the empirical and theoretical aspects of social work. Eventually, expertise and commitment of participatory advisory bodies are reflected today in the sociopolitical decisions found in many countries. For enthusiasts of participatory social work, recognition of service users’ perspective and civic activities in both academic discourse and daily practice perpetuate democratization of the social service system. They maintain uneven power distribution in both frameworks of elitist research and in practical models of social work. However, there is a growing body of opinion that participatory practices are only a more intelligent tool of contemporary societies’ governance. Whichever approach one takes, participatory social work raises anew the issues of credibility of knowledge, processes of its creation and use, the purpose of social work, its relationship to politics, and—above all—the role and competences of a social worker (co-)constructing social change in partnership with and not just for the service users. This collective monograph considers thoroughly some of the above issues and many more. We focus not only on current state but most of all on raising controversial issues to encourage debate, reflection and discussion concerning participatory social work with a special attention given to participatory research. It offers new cross-national insight into participatory social work as well as discussion of its barriers and side effects. As a collective monograph prepared by an international team of researchers, it should help social workers, social pedagogues, politicians, sociologists, social activists, etc. from different geographic and sociocultural contexts to develop reflections on the implications and consequences of doing their research and practice in participatory manners.Trade ReviewThe book is the result of a longer discussion about PAR in different contexts. This book focuses on methodological and practical experiences of PAR in a more radical perspective. But not only opportunities but although pitfalls and challenges are worked out. It has been possible to represent international authors (and international means in that book actually more than one or two nation states)! In general, the book is a very important and new perspective on PAR in international discourse. The book is innovative, because new perspectives on PAR were worked out. Both research-practical and methodological aspects are reflected. Particularly important are the arguments and experience with clients as co-researchers. Practical examples of good practice are shown here. This is particularly noteworthy, since there is nowadays less concrete experiences with peer research. Also new is the examination of questions about education and studies. -- Graßhoff Gunther, University of Hildesheim

  • Culture and Conflict: Nation-Building in Denmark

Aarhus University Press Culture and Conflict: Nation-Building in Denmark

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisCultural differences are often the trigger for conflict – whether politically motivated or arising from dissonant understandings of national culture. But what we regard as distinctive today in our cultural heritage or day-to-day cultural experience is deeply rooted in the rich diversity of the national currents of the nineteenth century. Culture and Conflict: Nation-Building in Denmark and Scandinavia, 1800–1930 explores the many strands of Danish and Scandinavian culture that helped to shape these cultural identities. The sixteen contributions in this volume analyse how competing national agendas influenced the development of political life as well as literature, the visual arts, and music. A central theme is the cultural conflicts that formed an essential part of nineteenth-century nation-building. Culturally as well as politically, boundaries were drawn up, ideologies were formulated and discussed, and determined attempts were made to suppress divergent cultural voices in the drive to forge strong national or Scandinavian narratives. The results of these conflicts were the enduring cultural struggles that form the subject of this volume. The contributions at hand, by scholars from Denmark, Britain, Norway, the United States, and Germany, bring a broad and interdisciplinary perspective to bear on these distinctively Nordic themes. Aimed both at students and at established scholars, the chapters discuss the many facets of nationalism, its cultures, and its countercultures, as well as revisiting the historiography of the 1800–1930 period with a more pluralistic approach.

  • Democratization in the Nordic World

Aarhus University Press Democratization in the Nordic World

Book SynopsisThe Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) enjoy some of the happiest populations and highest standards of living in the world, thanks in part to stable, democratic systems of government. Here, David Delfs Erbo Andersen presents a syncretic history of political and socioeconomic developments in the three Scandinavian countries since the early modern period, and contrasts their peaceful transitions with the more dramatic histories of otherwise similar European countries, like France and Germany. Unlike these and many other countries—the United States among them—Scandinavia’s transition to democracy from monarchy was not marked by major violent upheavals or extreme political antagonism. Rather, Scandinavia’s peaceful process of democratization owed itself to the development of a penetrative bureaucracy in the early modern period and the activism of cooperative associations, first of farmers in the early nineteenth century and then of industrialized workers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thanks to the gradual, relatively consensual adoption of political reforms and social norms, the history of ”Nordic democratic exceptionalism” today helps account for the ongoing stability of the Scandinavian countries.

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis“The contributors to this volume have found the language and concepts by which to interpret Leonard Howell and the origins of the Rastafari movement in the 1930s. This volume is richly documented from the archives, and from interviews, and is informed by multidisciplinary methods, so the reader is treated to an authoritative and comprehensive collection of essays. “Leonard Howell was persecuted over five decades by the British colonial state and by Jamaican governments since independence in 1962. It is in this context that Howell defined the main tenets of the movement, a movement that has now spread globally. All the major themes of his thinking, such as African redemption, the divinity of Haile Selassie, repatriation, and the struggle for freedom and self-reliance are discussed. Howell challenged British colonialism and Jamaican elites in a very different way from the approaches used by the middle-class intelligentsia. He focused, rather, on a new way of seeing God, King and self, thus creating an alternative way of being in the world. Developing Marcus Garvey’s focus on Africa, Leonard Howell and his followers reclaimed their ancestral identity from the dehumanized condition left by British slavery and colonialism. Howell’s communal settlement on ‘Pinnacle’ was an alternative communal space for Rastafari artisans, musicians and peasant farmers.”—Rupert Lewis, Professor Emeritus, Department of Government, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica

Book SynopsisThis book presents the evolution of the science technology paradigm in Japan and analyzes the critical community and local governance issues from the perspectives of the changing risk landscape, Society 5.0, and digital transformation. It also provides suggestions for the future development of a resilient society and community, by drawing lessons from other countries.Advancements in science technology in recent decades in Japan and the world might have increased our capacity to tackle the adverse human consequences of various kinds of disasters and environmental issues. However, the accompanied and interlinking phenomena of urbanization, climate change, rural to urban migration, population decreases, and aged population have posed new challenges, especially in the small, medium-sized cities, and in rural areas of Japan. This is also enhanced by the risk of cascading, complex and systemic risk, which is defining a new normal as “living with uncertainties”.Society 5.0 is defined as "A human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space." Society 5.0 was proposed in the 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan as a future society that Japan should aspire to. Society 5.0 achieves a high degree of convergence between cyberspace (virtual space) and physical space (real space), compared with the past information society (Society 4.0) that people would access a cloud service (databases) in cyberspace via the Internet and search for, retrieve, and analyze information or data.In Japan, in the initial stage, a great deal of confusion about the number of people infected with coronavirus occurred. Not only made it inefficient, but it did not produce the accurate data needed for critical decisions.Japan may have unique disadvantages compared with other countries. Trying to drive digitization without thoroughly understanding these disadvantages and addressing them head-on will only lead to failed digital transformations. With these three pillars of changing risk landscape, Society 5.0, and Digital transformation drive, the book will analyze the evolution of the science technology paradigm in Japan, will go deeper into the critical community and local governance issues, and will provide suggestions for future development of resilient society and community, by drawing lessons from overseas disaster risk reduction.Table of Contents1. Science technology and People centered society 2. Science, Technology, Innovation and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 3. Systemic risk and system-based approach for Society 5.0 4. Emerging issues and Japan’s milestones in science and technology in disaster risk reduction 5. Evidence Based Policy Making of Smart City: The Case of Challenge in Maebashi City, Japan 6. Personal life records for health decision making in disaster situation 7. Digital transformation and disaster risk reduction 8. xR and implications to DRR: challenges and prospects 9. Open governance and disaster risk reduction 10. Open Governance and Disaster Planning, Recovery, and Response: Lessons from the USA 11. • Spirits and Ships: Cultural Transfers in Early

ISEAS Spirits and Ships: Cultural Transfers in Early

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume seeks to foreground a borderless history and geography of South, Southeast, and East Asian littoral zones that would be maritime-focused, and thereby explore the ancient connections and dynamics of interaction that favoured the encounters among the cultures found throughout the region stretching from the Indian Ocean littorals to the Western Pacific, from the early historical period to the present. Transcending the artificial boundaries of macro-regions and nation-states, and trying to bridge the arbitrary divide between (inherently cosmopolitan) high cultures (e.g. Sanskritic, Sinitic, or Islamicate) and local or indigenous cultures, this multidisciplinary volume explores the metaphor of Monsoon Asia as a vast geo-environmental area inhabited by speakers of numerous language phyla, which for millennia has formed an integrated system of littorals where crops, goods, ideas, cosmologies, and ritual practices circulated on the sea-routes governed by the seasonal monsoon winds. The collective body of work presented in the volume describes Monsoon Asia as an ideal theatre for circulatory dynamics of cultural transfer, interaction, acceptance, selection, and avoidance, and argues that, despite the rich ethnic, linguistic and sociocultural diversity, a shared pattern of values, norms, and cultural models is discernible throughout the region.
