Oxford University Press Secularism
Book SynopsisUntil the modern period the integration of church (or other religion) and state (or political life) had been taken for granted. The political order was always tied to an official religion in Christian Europe, pre-Christian Europe, and in the Arabic world. But from the eighteenth century onwards, some European states began to set up their political order on a different basis. Not religion, but the rule of law through non-religious values embedded in constitutions became the foundation of some states - a movement we now call secularism. In others, a de facto secularism emerged as political values and civil and criminal law altered their professed foundation from a shared religion to a non-religious basis. Today secularism is an increasingly hot topic in public, political, and religious debate across the globe. It is embodied in the conflict between secular republics - from the US to India - and the challenges they face from resurgent religious identity politics; in the challenges faced by religious states like those of the Arab world from insurgent secularists; and in states like China where calls for freedom of belief are challenging a state imposed non-religious worldview. In this Very Short Introduction Andrew Copson tells the story of secularism, taking in momentous episodes in world history, such as the great transition of Europe from religious orthodoxy to pluralism, the global struggle for human rights and democracy, and the origins of modernity. He also considers the role of secularism when engaging with some of the most contentious political and legal issues of our time: ''blasphemy'', ''apostasy'', religious persecution, religious discrimination, religious schools, and freedom of belief and freedom of thought in a divided world.Previously published in hardback as Secularism: Politics, Religion, and FreedomABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.Trade ReviewCopson has managed to put together an accessible, but surprisingly nuanced and comprehensive, introduction to secularism that would be appropriate for undergraduate classrooms or lay readers interested in the topic. * Mary Leah Friedline, Religious Studies Review *Today's world is in dire need of the noble tradition of secularism, and I know nobody better qualified than Andrew Copson to expound it. * Richard Dawkins *This is an exceptionally careful, fair-minded and positive introduction to the many meanings of a word often carelessly used. It will be an enormous help to all who want to understand better the current controversies about religious belief and modern society. * Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury *A must read. It is a worthwhile introduction that will inform and may correct some assumptions and prejudices. * The Rev Maurice Stafford, Methodist Recorder *Concise and fair-minded ... Secularism helps the reader navigate [the] ... shifting terrain admirably. * Nick Spencer, Times Literary Supplement *Andrew Copson's short book covers a lot of ground. It is one of the best books I've read in this excellent series. Copson [...] provides a balanced and generous interpretation that presents arguments on different sides ... His approach is subtle and intelligent, and is informed by a deep understanding of the positions of those with whom he disagrees. I learnt a great deal from reading this. * Nigel Warburton, Five Books *Recommended. * CHOICE *Copson is even-handed in his analysis ... This is as nuanced a defence of secularism as you'll find * Jonathan Wright, Catholic Herald *Andrew Copson ... looks for genuine debate in Secularism ... It is natural to review books on atheism and secularism together. The intersection of the two groups is large. But one of the chief benefits of reading Copson is that he enables us to think more deeply about how they diverge. * Maximilian de Gaynesford, The Tablet *It is to Andrew Copson's credit that his short book refuses to circumvent ... big issues but rather brings them blinking out into the light and enables readers to understand better and think more clearly about them. It is undoubtedly the author's hope-and by and large this reviewer's too-that by the end of the book readers will look more positively on secularism. But that would mark not the end of a debate, but the start of a new one. Secularism yes. But what kind? * Nick Spencer, Theos *An excellent and sympathetic introduction to secularism * Paradigm Explorer *[Copson's] new book strikes the rare balance of being both entertaining and informative ... [His] gift, it seems, is the ability to condense decades of the evolution and analysis of the concept of secularism into 140 short pages. * The Pink Humanist *Secularism is of growing importance all over the world, yet it is also an approach with deep roots reaching far back into our history. Andrew Copson elegantly explores this history as well as secularism's importance today, showing how it evolved and how it is the key to de-escalating so many of the modern world's points of conflict. * Dan Snow *Andrew Copson is one of the most thoughtful people in the world on secularism. We have never needed a sane, intelligent, persuasive guide to secularism more than now - so I'd say thank God for this excellent book, if that wasn't too obviously ironic. * Johann Hari *A timely tour de force and indispensable analysis for anyone seeking to get to grips with the roots, philosophy, and current controversies surrounding secularism which are challenging our vexed world. * Professor Francesca Klug, author of Magna Carta For All Humanity: Homing in on Human Rights *A secular state embraces freedom of religion or belief, the equal treatment of persons regardless of faith, and the separation of religious and state authorities. In this wide-ranging and timely study Andrew Copson describes the virtues of secularism as the guarantor of equal dignity, freedom, and security for all, but also the various platforms from which it is opposed, and its fragile and increasingly beleaguered state across the world. Scrupulously fair, his book brings much-needed clarity into a confused and embittered area of dispute. * Simon Blackburn, author of Ethics: A Very Short Introduction and Plato's Republic: A Biography *This is a dazzling tour of the history and meanings of Secularism. Copson pulls off that most compelling thing a synthesis of nuance and rigour that is global in its vision, historical in its foundation, but fully contemporary in its relevance. For being so intimately involved in advocacy, the author demonstrates balance and understanding of critical as well as supportive positions, and with its authoritative research base this is immensely useful for student learning in the growing arena of Studies in Nonbelief. * Callum Brown, Professor of Late modern European History, University of Glasgow *Table of Contents1: What is secularism? 2: Secularism in Western societies 3: Secularism diversifies 4: The case for secularism 5: The case against secularism 6: Conceptions of secularism 7: Hard questions and new conflicts Afterword: The future of secularism References and Further Reading Index

Taylor & Francis Ltd Called to Account
Book SynopsisCalled to Account traces the evolution of the global public accounting profession through a series of scandals leading to voluntary or mandated reforms. Ever entertaining and educational, the book describes 16 of the most audacious accounting frauds of the last 80 years, and identifies the accounting standards and legislation adopted as a direct consequence of each scandal. This third edition offers expanded coverage of the Global Financial Crisis and international auditing. While retaining favorite chapters exposing the schemes of Crazy Eddie Antar, Chainsaw Al Dunlap, and Barry the Boy Wonder Minkow, new chapters describe the accounting problems at Lehman Brothers, Colonial Bank, and Olympus. Students will learn that financial fraud is a global problem, and that accounting reform is heavily influenced by politics. With discussion questions and a chart mapping each chapter to topics covered in popular auditing textbooks, Called to Account Trade Review"Paul Clikeman is a wonderful storyteller who brings the characters in these fraud cases to life and describes the cycles of fraud and reform that have driven the development of accounting. My students and I love this book!" — Dana R. Hermanson, Dinos Eminent Scholar Chair, Kennesaw State University, GA"Called to Account is my favorite accounting book. The clear and concise chapters are the perfect mix of accounting detail, colorful characters and intrigue. It’s a must read for those who want to understand where standards come from and where they might be headed next." — Brian W. Mayhew, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Program, Arthur Andersen Alumni, Professor, University of Wisconsin–Madison, WI"Called to Account provides an outstanding, historical perspective on how financial frauds and other important events have shaped the U.S. accounting profession. And the individual case studies covering most of the largest frauds in recent history are both informative and enjoyable to read. As a supplement for an auditing textbook to bring more realism to particular issues, or simply as a great read on how the accounting profession has evolved to its present state, I highly recommend this excellent book." — Dennis Beresford, Executive in Residence, University of Georgia, and Former Chairman of FASB"I have used prior editions of Called to Account for several years as an integral part of my undergraduate auditing course with outstanding results. The book is very engaging and serves as a starting point for a more in-depth research assignment on the individual cases. In addition to gaining an understanding of the accounting frauds, students develop a much deeper appreciation for the evolution of accounting and auditing standards and the many factors influencing that evolution. I will continue to use Called to Account and highly recommend it to others." — Gary J. Witosky, David M. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Health Inequality
Book SynopsisThe persistence of stark health inequalities in today's world is painfully clear to see, not least in the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and falling life expectancy in many parts of the world. How can we advance our understanding of the full extent of health inequality, what drives it, and ways to address it?The third edition of this popular book closely examines the influence of social class, gender, and race/ethnicity (among other issues) on health in the light of broad macro-political contexts. The classic behavioural, psychosocial, and material approaches to health and their embodiment within a life-course perspective are introduced but, importantly, are also re-situated within the growing understanding of the commercial and political determinants of health. Bartley and Kelly-Irving draw on extensive new evidence that shows how the chances for everyone to lead a long and healthy life depend on where power lies to control health-damaging policies and introduce health-promoting ones. Health Inequalitywill continue to be essential reading for students taking courses in the sociology of health and illness, social policy and welfare, health sciences, public health and epidemiology and all those interested in understanding the consequences of social inequality for health.

North Atlantic Books,U.S. Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous
Book SynopsisA 2022 Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist in Science & TechnologyAn Indigenous environmental scientist breaks down why western conservationism isn''t working--and offers Indigenous models informed by case studies, personal stories, and family histories that center the voices of Latin American women and land protectors.Despite the undeniable fact that Indigenous communities are among the most affected by climate devastation, Indigenous science is nowhere to be found in mainstream environmental policy or discourse. And while holistic land, water, and forest management practices born from millennia of Indigenous knowledge systems have much to teach all of us, Indigenous science has long been ignored, otherized, or perceived as "soft"--the product of a systematic, centuries-long campaign of racism, colonialism, extractive capitalism, and delegitimization. Here, Jessica Hernandez--Maya Ch''orti'' and Zapotec environmental scientist and founder of environmental agency Piña Soul--introduces and contextualizes Indigenous environmental knowledge and proposes a vision of land stewardship that heals rather than displaces, that generates rather than destroys. She breaks down the failures of western-defined conservatism and shares alternatives, citing the restoration work of urban Indigenous people in Seattle; her family''s fight against ecoterrorism in Latin America; and holistic land management approaches of Indigenous groups across the continent.Through case studies, historical overviews, and stories that center the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous Latin American women and land protectors, Hernandez makes the case that if we''re to recover the health of our planet--for everyone--we need to stop the eco-colonialism ravaging Indigenous lands and restore our relationship with Earth to one of harmony and respect.

Peter Lang Publishing Inc To Lead by Obeying
Book SynopsisThis book develops the main political lessons that the Mexican Neozapatismo movement brings us, in its almost 30 years of public life. Thus, beginning by defining the singular concept of Autonomy that the Neozapatista movement proposes, different from legal, anthropological or political definitions, and conceived as real global autonomy. Then the content of the Neozapatista oxymoron Mandar Obedeciendo', To Lead by Obeying' is explained as identical to the idea of popular self-government. A new concept of autonomy is linked necessarily with the idea of Other Politics' and Other Democracy'. The book also presents how Neozapatismo embodies a project of modernity that, having been constructed as a modernity of resistance for five centuries to the dominant modernity imposed by the Spaniards in Mexico, has now been transformed into a project of a real alternative modernity to capitalism.Table of ContentsPreface to the English Edition – By Way of Introduction: When the Imagination Takes Power – Leading by Obeying: Popular Self- Government, Political Autonomy, and Integral Global Autonomy –The Death of the Human Activity of Politics: The Other Politics and the Other Democracy – Mexican Neo- Zapatismo, Heir to the World Cultural Revolution of 1968 – The Mexican Neo- Zapatista Movement and the Transition from a Modernity of Resistance to an Alternative Modernity – A Conclusion That Questions Instead of Concluding – Appendix 1 Building Counter- Power from Below and to the Left (or, How to Change the World by Revolutionizing Power from Below Power) – Appendix 2 The Zapatista Gaze: Looking (to and from) Below and to the Left – Appendix 3 The New Stage of Mexican Neo- Zapatismo – Appendix 4 The Little Zapatista School: Living the Struggle for Autonomy from Within – Appendix 5 The (Symbolic) Death of Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos and the Collective Neo- Zapatista ‘we’ – Appendix 6 Mexican Neo- Zapatismo and Its Impact within Contemporary Social Sciences: Six Theses to Develop – Appendix 7 Mexican Neo- Zapatismo’s Contribution to the Development of Contemporary Critical Thought – Appendix 8 Neo- Zapatista Discoveries: Birthing the New World from Below, Knowing Arts, Creating Sciences – Appendix 9 Mexico and Mexican Neo- Zapatismo in Times of COVID- 19 – Works Cited – Glossary – Translator’s Note.

HarperCollins Publishers Shy
Book SynopsisSociety tells that us that being shy is a fault, but Annie Ridout says it's a gift. Shy: How being quiet can lead to success teaches us how to embrace this misjudged attribute, instead of trying to fix it. Most of us have some understanding of shyness. From birthday parties as children to office Christmas parties as adults, from an old friend's wedding to a group presentation, we've all experienced it in some form or other. Shyness may be ever-present or it may come and go.Partly genetic, partly environmental, shyness is largely viewed as a character flaw, something that needs to change, but why is no-one talking about the benefits of being shy? For example, shyness usually equates to being an excellent listener, considerate speaker and thoughtful observer.Interweaving personal experience with expertise from clinical psychologists, Annie explores why shyness affects some more than others, and offers tried-and-tested tools to help the reader deal with elements of shyness that can feel debilitating. Shy recasts our understanding of this often-misunderstood attribute, celebrating it as a pathway rather than a barrier to success and happiness.Trade ReviewPraise for Shy‘Not only is Shy a reassuringly relatable read for any of us who have ever felt lacking in confidence, it's also a practical and galvanising guide to helping you harness the power of shyness, particularly in an increasingly digital world.’ Rosamund Dean, Deputy Editor, Grazia ‘In a noisy, opinionated world where putting yourself out there is seemingly the only way to succeed, Annie offers a reassuring celebration of shyness and the benefits it can bring us, alongside a practical guide to how to overcome the ways in which it can hold us back.’ Laura Whateley, best-selling author of MONEY: A USER’S GUIDE Praise for The Freelance Mum'So many women find their careers cut off at the elbow as soon as they become pregnant – this book sounds like it could be really helpful for navigating the disconnect between family and work' Eva Wiseman, OBSERVER ‘This is an area that sorely needs innovation and creative solutions and Annie’s website The Early Hour shows she’s exactly the woman for the job. HarperCollins Publishers Inc The Rise of the New Puritans
Book SynopsisIn the process, they are sucking the joy out of life.In The Rise of the New Puritans, Noah Rothman explains how, in pursuit of a better world, progressives are ruining the very things which make life worth living.Trade Review“The new Puritans are here, and they’re coming for your lifestyle, your freedoms, and your fun. In this book, Noah Rothman–one of the best authors in the country today–lays out the case for just why the censorious Left is winning the day, and why the future of the country relies on rejecting their tyrannical vision for tomorrow.” — Ben Shapiro, author and host of The Ben Shapiro Show “Living through a political and cultural realignment is fascinating, bewildering, and maddening. Noah Rothman nails these disparate thoughts to the page in his new book. He sets the reader up for finding a place to sit when the music stops on this current cycle of change and the inevitable ones that will come next. The Rise of the New Puritans does not scold; rather, it is a book that lifts up the best of our American independent spirit and reinforces the love we have for our country.” — Dana Perino, White House press secretary to President George W. Bush “The best book I’ve read on the absurdity and futility of the woke movement. Rothman brilliantly and methodically exposes the vapidity of these New Puritans with too-nuts-to-be-true examples of those they target—from poets, knitters, and bird-watchers to chefs and home decorators. No one is safe in these modern-day witch trials until we realize the secret to dismantling them: mockery. Absolutely brilliant, utterly engrossing. You will laugh out loud and shout these stories from the rooftops as Rothman reminds us that sanctimonious cults of misery have historically short shelf lives.” — Megyn Kelly, author, journalist, and host of The Megyn Kelly Show “Republicans long ago mastered the art of moral preening in the public square. In The Rise of the New Puritans, Noah Rothman vividly describes how today’s progressive movement is fueled by a utopian drive to enforce ideological conformity across America. Combined with rising illiberalism on the Far Right, this new Puritanism threatens to undermine some of liberal democracy’s most cherished values. Read Noah Rothman’s book to better understand why.” — Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe “Mixing sharp, pithy political analysis with old-fashioned reporting, Noah Rothman reveals how progressivism has sucked the excitement out of American life and tainted our politics. Rothman’s a brilliant thinker with a detective’s eye for both detail and motive. And this time he’s gone rogue taking on the Joy Police themselves. This dismantling of the Left’s censorship and hysteria is a must-read.” — Jonah Goldberg, author, syndicated columnist, and editor-in-chief of The Dispatch “Noah Rothman skewers the people who, to paraphrase H. L. Mencken, have a haunting fear that someone, somewhere, might be having a good time—or, more to the point, transgressing against their petty and inane quasi-religious orthodoxies. Rothman is a first-rate writer and thinker who expertly dissects this blight on our public life and points the way to a better, less censorious American future.” — Rich Lowry, editor-in-chief of National Review “You hold in your hands a mirror on our collective recent history, and it’s pretty awful to gaze upon. Once more into the breach then with Rothman, who is a leading light of the rising generation of public intellectuals filling in the ranks of the exhausted and the exiled after more than two dozen years of constant, relentless boiling politics of rage. Freedom and fun are worth defending, and Rothman has done this for us.” — Hugh Hewitt, author, columnist, and host of The Hugh Hewitt Show “In chronicling the madness of woke excess, Rothman puts his finger on what makes its practitioners so deeply alienating: It’s not merely that they’re wrong about most things, though they are. It’s that they’re relentlessly, exhaustingly joyless, self-righteous, and devoid of grace. We can either ridicule and fight them or live under their capricious misery. Rothman takes sides—and names.” — Guy Benson, Fox News Channel contributor and host of The Guy Benson Show

But the communities they find in these supposed safe havens can be rife with aggression, peer pressure, and groupthink—insisting that only certain practices are “best,” “healthiest,” “safest” (and mandatory). In this book, Jessica Clements and Kari Nixon debunk the myth of “optimal motherhood”—the idea that there is only one right answer to parenting dilemmas, and that optimal mothers must pursue perfection. In fact, Clements and Nixon write, parenting choices are not binaries, and the scientific findings touted by mommy groups are neither clear-cut nor prescriptive.Clements and Nixon trace contemporary ideas of o

Book SynopsisThe first book-length study of Nairobi-based female filmmakers—and how their dogged pursuit of opportunities, innovation, and cultural support is defining an industry.Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is home to something extraordinary and unlikely: in this city, the most critically acclaimed filmmakers—both directors and producers—are women. Yet, across the globe, women make up less than 10 percent of film directors. In Creative Hustling, Robin Steedman takes a closer look at these remarkable women filmmakers, viewing them not only as auteurs, but also as entrepreneurs, who are taking the lead in creating a vibrant, and atypical, screen media industry.
