  • Oxford University Press, USA The Price of German Unity

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe unification of Germany as a prelude to the end of the division of Europe and the termination of the Cold War came as a surprise to the whole world. It was the beginning of a new era in German and European history. The Price of German Unity is the first full-scale analysis of this process, both domestically and in its wider international context, with a particular focus on the social-policy consequences. Gerhard A. Ritter uses a wide range of hitherto inaccessible sources to describe and analyse the dynamics of reunification, including archives from the Chancellor''s Office, and the relevant ministries and major parties of both the Federal Republic and the GDR, as well as private papers of leading actors on both sides and a wealth of interview material. As the book convincingly demonstrates, the wholesale transfer of the social system of the Federal Republic of Germany to the territory of the former GDR and the huge drain of economic resources from West to East that this involved, profoundly affected the economic and political framework of the new Germany and greatly intensified the latent crisis of the German welfare state.Trade Reviewessential reading for those interested in the recent history of Germany. It also makes an important contribution to the debate about the viability of 'welfare states' in Europe at a time when they are threatened by deregulation, ageing populations and new patterns of work. * A.J. • Oxford University Press The Politics of the New Welfare State

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the early 1990s, European welfare states have undergone substantial changes, in terms of objectives, areas of intervention, and instruments. Traditional programmes, such as old age pensions have been curtailed throughout the continent, while new functions have been taken up. At present, welfare states are expected to help non-working people back into employment, to complement work income for the working poor, to reconcile work and family life, to promote gender equality, to support child development, and to provide social services for an ageing society. The welfare settlement that is emerging at the beginning of the 21st century is nonetheless very different in terms of functions and instruments from the one inherited from the last century. This book seeks to offer a better understanding of the new welfare settlement, and to analyze the factors that have shaped the recent transformation.Table of ContentsList of Figures ; List of Tables ; List of Contributors ; Introduction ; The Politics of the 'New' Welfare States: Analysing Reforms in Western Europe ; PART I: PERSPECTIVES ON THE NEW WELFARE STATE ; 2. 15 in stock

This book showcases rights based participatory approaches to policy-making, practice and research with children and youth.Throughout its three parts, the book conceptualises a rights-based participatory approach; showcases constructive and innovative rights based participatory approaches across the domains of research, policy and practice; and interrogates the challenges and complexities in the implementation of such an approach. In recent times, Ireland has been at the forefront of promoting and implementing participatory approaches to policy-making, practice and research focused on children and youth. This edited volume is a timely opportunity to capture previously undocumented learning generated from a wide range of innovative participatory initiatives implemented in Ireland. In capturing this learning, real world guidance will be provided to international policy-makers, practitioners and researchers working with children and youth. This book is essential reading for
