  • Sport History in the Digital Era

University of Illinois Press Sport History in the Digital Era

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom statistical databases to story archives, from fan sites to the real-time reactions of Twitter-empowered athletes, the digital communication revolution has changed the way sports fans relate to their favorite teams. In this volume, contributors from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States analyze the parallel transformation in the field of sport history, showing the ways powerful digital tools raise vital philosophical, epistemological, ontological, methodological, and ethical questions for scholars and students alike. Chapters consider how the philosophical and theoretical understanding of the meaning of history influence a willingness to engage with digital history, and conceptualize the relationship between history making and the digital era. As the writers show, digital media''s mostly untapped potential for studying the recent past via blogs, chat rooms, gambling sites, and the like forge a symbiosis between sports and the internet, and ofTrade Review"Each essay is thought-provoking and grounded with examples or connections to sport history that challenge us to consider the utility of digital technologies—and our relationship to them—moving forward. . . . Osmond and Phillips show a keen awareness of the major developments, debates, and conversations in the digital humanities and offer an important book that will serve as an accessible conversation starter for historians of sport."--Sport in American History "Those who are interested in sport history will appreciate this resource on using the Internet in their work. Highly recommended."--Choice"This book should interest anyone who does research into sports history or who teaches a graduate-level class on doing research, especially archival work."--Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly "This book sets out to make history safe for the Internet age that has been thrust upon us ready or not in this century. . . . Sport historians, sports studies and sociology of sport scholars, and digital humanities scholars will all find useful ideas for their research and their efforts in the classroom in the volume's ten chapters."--ARETE"Sport History in the Digital Era offers a well-timed overview of the ways that sport historians can work in this milieu."--Sport History Review"Provides a thoughtful exploration of the strengths and weaknesses of online sport history, which is especially valuable for those reluctant to embrace the digital age."--New Media & Society"The stimulating ideas presented make this essential reading for all those interested in how sports history will fare in the digital age. The contributors, some cautious, others more polemic, discuss the limits and possibilities of digitized knowledge and assess the challenges and opportunities offered by digital technology."--Wray Vamplew, co-author of Mud, Sweat and Beers: A Cultural History of Sport and Alcohol"A digital revolution has already altered much of what sport historians do, from archival research to classroom pedagogy and options for publication, to attaining the rewards of professional advancement. But is it creating different tools for doing the same old work, or is the work itself being transformed? The question is unavoidable—avoiding it is its own response—but the answers aren't obvious. These instructive and provocative essays offer a timely guide to issues that will shape the future of the discipline."--Michael Oriard, author of Bowled Over: Big-Time College Football from the Sixties to the BCS Era "Reading the essays in this book opened me up to an unexpectedly broad array of ways to use internet tools and resources for both scholarship and teaching. It is a timely--indeed prescient--addition to the scholarship in the field and will likely be the standard text in this area for many years."--Susan Birrell, co-editor of Reading Sport: Critical Essays on Power and Representation "Taking a very balanced approach and careful not to pass judgment without adequate evidence, the editors make clear that there are advantages and disadvantages to using digital tools and that the engagement with digital history ultimately raises important methodological questions and concerns. A truly significant contribution to the field. The first volume of its kind."--David K. Wiggins, author of Out of the Shadows: A Biographical History of African American Athletes

  • Group Conflict and Political Mobilization in Bahrain and the Arab Gulf

Indiana University Press Group Conflict and Political Mobilization in Bahrain and the Arab Gulf

Book SynopsisThe oil-producing states of the Arab Gulf are said to sink or swim on their capacity for political appeasement through economic redistribution. Yet, during the popular uprisings of the Arab Spring, in Bahrain and all across the Arab Gulf, ordinary citizens showed an unexpected enthusiasm for political protest directed against governments widely assumed to have co-opted their support with oil revenues. Justin Gengler draws on the first-ever mass political survey in Bahrain to demonstrate that neither is the state willing to offer all citizens the same bargain, nor are all citizens willing to accept it. Instead, shared social and religious identities offer a viable basis for mass political coordination. Challenging the prevailing rentier interpretation of political life in the Gulf states, Gengler offers new empirical evidence and a new conceptual framework for understanding the attitudes of ordinary citizens.Trade ReviewGengler presents a critical analysis examining the conventional wisdom of the rentier state theory and questions Bahrain's ability to buy the loyalty of its citizens despite its lagging political legitimacy. . . • University of Notre Dame Press Causality In Crisis

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the past fifty years statisticians and methodologists in the social sciences have developed and refined a family of closely related statistical methods for the study of social phenomena. While the value of such methods of analysis is universally acknowledged, their use has never been wholly uncontroversial. In 1993 prominent scholars from a variety of disciplines (social sciences, statistics, philosophy of science) gathered at the University of Notre Dame to debate whether causal modeling techniques old or new can really justify the drawing of causal conclusions on the basis of correlational statistical data. The resulting volume from that groundbreaking conference is Causality in Crisis? a comprehensive and sophisticated introduction to perhaps the most important set of issues confronting social scientific researchers in the 1990s and beyond. In the essays presented here contributors critically reassess the widely accepted view that statistical methods of analysis cTrade Review“This is a collection of essys by a distinguished group of authors that is a ‘must read’ for those with an interest in causal modeling.” —Piers Rawling, University of Missouri-St. Louis“[A]n attempt to set out what the problems with contemporary statistical methods are, what solutions are being proposed, and to open up the debates about their effectiveness to a wider audience.” —Social Studies of Science“. . . an exceptionally well written treatment of the current crisis in sociological methodology, with rich and lucid discussions, particularly by the editors, Vaughn McKim and Stephen Turner.” —Social Forces“This is a collection of essays by a distinguished group of authors that is a ‘must read’ for those interested in causal modeling.” —Philosophy in Review“The present book evaluates a striking new claim to provide the means for causal inference from statistical association. Readers can get a quick overview, or that plus a tutorial-like introduction to the statistical principles underlying the SGS algorithm, move on to discussions about the pros and cons of the method, and end with a deep understanding of the difficult issues that have surfaced here. And, what will prove most satisfying to the historically minded readers of JHBS, the endeavor is placed in a historical context that illuminates the nature of the issues at hand. It is refreshing to find an exception, an edited book with a consistent theme, an organization that encourages reading from beginning to end...Readers who take the time to do this will be rewarded with a new perspective on some old questions....the present book makes clear that the difficulties of inferring causation from correlational data are very much with us still. It is a pleasure to recommend this book to readers interested in opening the door to this fundamental issue in social science, whether in the form of the most recent statistically sophisticated approaches, or to the very first attempts to grapple with it.” —Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences,

Trade Review“A fascinating read, regardless of your personal faith or politics.”—Eric C. Miller Reading Religion“The interviews and the authors’ wide knowledge of the literature on church conflict, globalisation, and related issues combine to produce a book that clearly lays out the roots of the discord within the Anglican Communion and challenges some tired explanations for the conflict.”—Church Times“Of the books on the state of the Anglican Communion in the last two decades, Brittain and McKinnon offer the best analysis to date, offering a lucid, coherent, and balanced presentation of the situation the Anglican Communion finds itself in.”—James Tengatenga Anglican Theological Review“As closely tied to national identities as the churches are themselves, the nature and fate of the Anglican Communion will be a continuing research area for some time: this book is recommended for students, scholars, and practitioners.”—Abby Day Sociology of Religion“This timely, lucid, and admirably balanced book should be required reading for all those who care about the Anglican Communion. The debate about same-sex relationships is correctly perceived as the presenting issue of deeper tensions, which are then explored from a variety of perspectives. I recommend it warmly.”—Grace Davie, author of Religion in Britain: A Persistent Paradox“Americans seeking to understand the conflict raging within the Episcopal Church will gain perspective from this valuable book. It’s not just a battle in the ‘culture war.’ Homosexuality is the ‘presenting symbol’ of broader struggles within a 500-year-old, increasingly transnational institution. Making use of sociological theory, religious history, and interviews with church leaders around the world, Brittain and McKinnon assess the fate of Anglicanism in the context of its current crisis.”—R. • Analysis of Health Surveys

John Wiley & Sons Inc Analysis of Health Surveys

Book SynopsisThis applied statistics book examines sampling methods from a biomedical standpoint. The authors draw on their work at the National Cancer Institute, helping practitioners analyze real-world health data even with no prior experience in survey methods.Trade ReviewThe book fulfills the authors' purpose of providing neededexpertise for statisticians who are limited in their knowledge ofsurvey research. There are excellent questions at the end of eachchapter so it would make a good textbook for a course in surveyanalysis. (Journal of Official Statistics, Vol. 16, 2000) A strength of this book is the exercises at the ends of eachchapter [...]. This makes the book ideal either for independentstudy or for a survey methods course at final year undergraduate orpostgraduate level. Since the book is based on the two authors'many years of experience working in this field, it shows highlevels of sound judgement and good advice. (Biometrics, 2000) The analytic components of books about survey sampling oftenrestrict their discussion to the analysis of relatively simpleparameters of interest, such as population means and linearregression slopes. On the other hand, texts not devoted to surveysampling rarely discuss in detail the effect of complex sampledesigns on data analysis. This book provides a great service to thehealth research community by tying together the tools of modernstatistical analysis and survey research in one package. Korn andGraubard write clearly and concisely, using well-chosen examples toilluminate potentially confusing concepts. (JASA, March 2001) If you are involved in analyzing data from very large surveys, thenyou will want to buy this book. Statisticians who enjoy expandingtheir horizons in statistics by reading practical and usefulstatistics books should also get a copy of the book. More and moreof this health-survey data becomes available all the time, soperhaps data analysis no longer needed in industry can find a newhome somewhere analyzing health-survey data. (Technometrics, May2001, Vol. 42, No. 4) "...provides a great service to the health research community bytying together...tools of modern statistical analysis and surveyresearch...." • Cognition and Survey Research

John Wiley & Sons Inc Cognition and Survey Research

Book SynopsisIntroducing the theory and tools of Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology (CASM), Cognition and Survey Research integrates cognitive science and survey methodology unlike any other survey textbook.Trade Review"This is overview material on a nonquantitative area of statistics. Persons involved with surveys would seem to benefit from an understanding of this material."(Technometrics Vol. 42, No. 3, August 2000) If you are interested in cognitive methods for improving the quality of data collected in surveys, then this book is for you. This book describes the frontiers of research on the cognitive aspects of survey methodology (CASM). It is an outcome of the Second Advanced Research Seminar in the Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology (CASM II). The book as a unique style. Four out of the six coeditors of this book, who organized the plenary sessions of the CASM II Seminar, edited four sections of the book (Chapters 2-22). The remaining editors contributed the first chapter. The purpose of the CASM II seminar and this book is to reflect on and evaluate past work, to demonstrate the exciting potential of focussed interdisciplinary research, and to stimulate creativity, thoughtfulness, and innovation for the future. Nationally and internationally known researchers from the United States have contributed to this book and they have to be congratulated for making the book informative and readable. (JASA, March 2001) ...this book is essential reading for serious survey practitioners and post-graduate students of survey methodology. Many of its individual chapters are also likely to become classic references in their own specialist fields. Book SynopsisWhile the methods literature is indeed large, it is rare for authors to discuss the practical issues and challenges they confronted in the course of their research projects. As a result, the author argues, each new cohort is effectively forced to reinvent the wheel, making mistakes that previous generations have already confronted and resolved.

Book SynopsisWhile many researchers study offenders and offending, few actually journey into the correctional world to meet offenders face to face. This book offers researchers, practitioners, and students a step-by-step guide to effectively research correctional populations, providing field-tested advice for those studying youth and adults on probation, on parole, and in jails and prisons. The book addresses topics such as how to build rapport with offenders and those who monitor them; how to select from the many types of correctional data that can be collected; how to navigate the informed consent process and maintain research ethics; and how to manage the logistics of doing research. With personal stories, what if scenarios, case studies, and real-world tools like checklists and sample forms, the authors share methods of negotiating the complexities that researchers often face as they work with those behind bars.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments 1. Book SynopsisWhile some books present ideal ethnographic field methods, Inside Ethnography shares the realities of fieldwork in action. With a focus on strategies employed with populations at society's margins, twenty-one contemporary ethnographers examine their cutting-edge work with honesty and introspection, drawing readers into the field to reveal the challenges they have faced. Representing disciplinary approaches from criminology, sociology, anthropology, public health, business, and social work, and designed explicitly for courses on ethnographic and qualitative methods, crime, deviance, drugs, and urban sociology, the authors portray an evolving methodology that adapts to the conditions of the field while tackling emerging controversies with perceptive sensitivity. Their judicious advice on how to avoid pitfalls and remedy missteps provides unusual insights for practitioners, academics, and undergraduate and graduate students. • Harassed Gender Bodies and Ethnographic Research

University of California Press Harassed Gender Bodies and Ethnographic Research

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisResearchers frequently experience sexualized interactions, sexual objectification, andharassmentas they conduct fieldwork. These experiences are often left out of ethnographers' tales from the field and remain unaddressed within qualitativeliterature.Harassedargues that the androcentric, racist, and colonialist epistemological foundations of ethnographicmethodology contribute to the silence surrounding sexualharassmentand other forms of violence. Rebecca Hanson and Patricia Richards challenge readers to recognizehow these attitudes put researchers at risk, further the solitude experienced by researchers, lead others to question the validity of their work, and, inturn, negatively impact the construction of ethnographic knowledge. To improve methodological training, data collection, and knowledge produced by all researchers,Harassedadvocates for an embodied approach to ethnography that reflexively engages with theways in which researchers' bodies shape the knowledge they produce. By challenging these assumptions, the authors offer an opportunity for researchers, advisors, and educators to consider the multiple ways in which good ethnographic research can be conducted. Beyond challenging current methodological training and mentorship, Harassed opens discussions about sexual harassment and violence in the social sciences in general. Trade Review"Harassed is an important, insightful text that should become a staple for research methods classes in anthropology, sociology, and women’s and gender studies. . . . This is a must-read for anyone conducting or supervising ethnographic research. . . . Highly recommended." * CHOICE *"One of this book’s major contributions is to lay bare the gendered character of ethnography as practical endeavor and intellectual pursuit. Interview extracts vividly convey how prevailing conventions create pernicious traps and impossible binds for female researchers, for whom the very act of entering a field site alone and unknown frequently contravenes prescribed norms of feminine conduct and so renders them vulnerable to overtures and advances. . . . While positioned as a challenge to institutional silence, Harassed could instead be seen as throwing down the gauntlet, providing a comprehensive appraisal of the problem and setting out clear-headed proposals for change." * Times Higher Education *"When my friends and I faced gendered issues during fieldwork, we viewed it as an anomalous problem to manage as best we could. Hanson and Richards move beyond individual-level suggestions on how to handle risks; they challenge academic assumptions about the very nature of ethnography. Their vision of an embodied ethnography should inform ongoing conversations about how we produce knowledge as well as how to appropriately train and support our students and colleagues." * Social Forces *"Harassed should be required reading for any class on ethnography or in-depth interviewing, for any researcher conducting ethnography or interviews, and for any faculty member who is advising students conducting such work. Armed with this book, researchers will not only be better able to protect themselves but they will also gain a model for how to learn and teach from their own embodied experiences in the field." * Gender & Society *"The book is an essential read for any student and/or researcher using and/or teaching ethnography as a methodology, as it is a much-needed point of departure for a discussion about the roles of our bodies, gender, and sexuality in our interactions with other people and in the construction of ethnographic knowledge. Moreover, it is an essential read for anyone engaged in international development research as it complements calls within the wider research governance framework for increased safeguarding, accountability, and transparency." * Anthropology in Action *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction 1 • Ethnographic Fixations 2 • Gendered Bodies and Field Research 3 • Sexual Harassment in the Field 4 • The Costs 5 • Constructing Knowledge 6 • Moving Forward Notes References Index

  • Thinking and Reasoning

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Thinking and Reasoning

Book SynopsisPresents a range of research on various aspects of thinking and reasoning. This title draws on a variety of approaches but locates its subject matter squarely within the theoretical framework of modern cognitive psychology and cognitive science.Trade Review"The strength of Thinking and Reasoning is its comprehensiveness. It covers not only the most important topics, from categorisation and reasoning to decision making and problem solving, but also other major perspectives on thinking such as expertise and developmental issues. The book also examines more recent topics, such as teaching thinking and creativity, which are not to be found in older textbooks. In general this is an excellent text: readable, comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date. I would be surprised if this did not become the major undergraduate text in the area for several years to come." European Journal of Cognitive Psychology "An outstanding work, which should be recognized both in the UK and the USA as the best introduction to the psychology of thinking. It is comprehensive and lucidly written - an impressive book." Professor P. N. Johnson-Laird, Princeton University "Garnham and Oakhill present their book under the guise of an objective text for 'intermediate and advanced undergraduate students'. It is, however, delightfully informative and charmingly opinionated. It should be read by upper-division under-graduate and graduate students, faculty, and researchers, as well as two-year technical program students." P. L. The authors find that men who desisted from crime were rooted in structural routines and had strong social ties to family and community.Trade ReviewThe accounts of individuals are quite riveting, and the book can be recommended strongly purely for the stories provided about diverse lives. However, the book is much, much more than that in terms of the serious challenge that the authors' findings and ideas present to some of the leading contemporary theories of both crime and development. A highly original and scholarly contribution of the highest quality. -- Sir Michael Rutter, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College LondonShared Beginnings, Divergent Lives is an extraordinary work which shows the deep insights gained by studying the whole life course, beginning in childhood and ending in later life. With access to a rare data archive, the authors provide compelling evidence on the remarkably varied adult lives of teenage delinquents who grew up in low-income areas of Boston (born 1925-1935). The story behind these varied life paths and their consequences inspires fresh thinking about crime over the life course through models of life trajectories and vivid narratives that reveal the complexity of lives. -- Glen H. Elder, Jr., University of North Carolina at Chapel HillThis book redraws the landscape of developmental criminology that Laub and Sampson already have done so much to define, setting new standards and benchmarks along the way. The authors both provide new evidence for earlier conclusions and challenge prevailing assumptions and assertions, thereby reshaping the criminological research agenda for years to come. -- John Hagan, Northwestern UniversityShared Beginnings, Divergent Lives by John H. Laub and Robert J. Sampson does not directly address current penal policy, but it provides devastating evidence refuting many fallacies that underlie it. The volume provides the conclusion to a classic criminological study. In the 1940s Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck began to study a sample of 500 Boston men who were remanded to reform school. Between 1940 and 1965 the Gluecks collected a mass of data on this sample (and a matched non-deliquent control group). They were interviewed at an average age of fourteen, again at twenty-five, and finally at thirty-two. The results were published in the Gluecks' seminal book Unravelling Juvenile Delinquency (1950) and subsequent works up to 1974. Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives reports on Laub and Sampson's attempts to contact and interview surviving members of the Gluecks' original cohort, now aged around seventy...Combining statistical analysis with qualitative depth interviewing, their study illuminates the sources of desistance from, and persistence in, crime over the men's lifetimes...There are many important lessons for current crime control discourse and policy that can be gained from this rigorous, sensitive and insightful study...If rehabilitation of offenders is possible (as this book demonstrates), then the current zero-sum refrain of crime control rhetoric that concern for victims precludes concern for offenders is refuted. Concern to protect victims requires concern for offenders. -- Robert Reiner * Times Literary Supplement *Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives is a profound, complex, and sometimes difficult book. Nevertheless, it is enormously rewarding. The book, destined to become a classic, will sharpen readers' awareness of adult development forever. The lessons of this book can be applied not only to criminality but also to the natural history of drug abuse, chronic unemployment, marital turmoil, and personality disorders. -- George E. Vaillant, M.D. * American Journal of Psychiatry *This is an invaluable and imaginative study that should provide data for criminologists to examine for years to come. The combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods is a refreshing break from the fetish with quantitative data that characterizes most criminological research…They have provided an excellent example of the thinking and research methods of modern criminology along with a rich source of data on the life course of people who were once labeled as delinquent and were incarcerated in a reformatory. -- William Chambliss * American Journal of Sociology *This is an invaluable and imaginative study that should provide data for criminologists to examine for years to come. The combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods is a refreshing break from the fetish with quantitative data that characterizes most criminological research. -- William Chambliss * American Journal of Sociology *This book analyzes newly collected data on crime and social development up to age 70 for 500 men who were remanded to reform school in the 1940s. Born in Boston in the late 1920s and early 1930s, these men were the subjects of the classic study Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency by Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck (1950). Updating their lives at the close of the twentieth century, and connecting their adult experiences to childhood, this book is arguably the longest longitudinal study of age, crime, and the life course to date. John Laub and Robert Sampson's long-term data, combined with in-depth interviews, defy the conventional wisdom that links individual traits such as poor verbal skills, limited self-control, and difficult temperament to long-term trajectories of offending. The authors reject the idea of categorizing offenders to reveal etiologies of offending--rather, they connect variability in behavior to social context. They find that men who desisted from crime were rooted in structural routines and had strong social ties to family and community. By uniting life-history narratives with rigorous data analysis, the author shed new light on long-term trajectories of crime and current policies of crime control. * Adolescence *This book is arguably the longest longitudinal study of age, crime, and the life course to date.
