  • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Time-Varying Effect Modeling for the Behavioral,

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first to introduce applied behavioral, social, and health sciences researchers to a new analytic method, the time-varying effect model (TVEM). It details how TVEM may be used to advance research on developmental and dynamic processes by examining how associations between variables change across time. The book describes how TVEM is a direct and intuitive extension of standard linear regression; whereas standard linear regression coefficients are static estimates that do not change with time, TVEM coefficients are allowed to change as continuous functions of real time, including developmental age, historical time, time of day, days since an event, and so forth. The book introduces readers to new research questions that can be addressed by applying TVEM in their research. Readers gain the practical skills necessary for specifying a wide variety of time-varying effect models, including those with continuous, binary, and count outcomes. The book presents technical details of TVEM estimation and three novel empirical studies focused on developmental questions using TVEM to estimate age-varying effects, historical shifts in behavior and attitudes, and real-time changes across days relative to an event. The volume provides a walkthrough of the process for conducting each of these studies, presenting decisions that were made, and offering sufficient detail so that readers may embark on similar studies in their own research. The book concludes with comments about additional uses of TVEM in applied research as well as software considerations and future directions. Throughout the book, proper interpretation of the output provided by TVEM is emphasized.Time-Varying Effect Modeling for the Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians/practitioners as well as graduate students in developmental psychology, public health, statistics and methodology for the social, behavioral, developmental, and public health sciences.Table of ContentsChapter 1. A Conceptual Introduction to Time-Varying Effect Modeling.Chapter 2. Specifying and Interpreting Time-Varying Effect Models.Chapter 3. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Preschool Peer Social Intervention in Autism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents the Preschool Peer Social Intervention (PPSI), a manualized comprehensive social curriculum to enhance peer-interaction for pre-schoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in three key domains: play, interaction, and conversation. The book outlines the PPSI’s transactional approach in each of the three intervention domains and incorporates developmental features and age-appropriate play, interaction, and conversation skills while accounting for individual differences in social communication abilities. The intervention is designed to be implemented within the child’s natural social environment, such as preschool, and it includes the child’s social agents, namely, their peers, teachers, and parents. PPSI intervention curricula addressed in this book are based on typical play, interaction, and conversation development, taking into account the social and communication challenges found to characterize young children with ASD in these domains. Building up the ability to play, interact and converse more efficiently with peers may render a substantial impact on preschoolers with ASD, with vast potential for improving not only these children’s immediate social experience with peers, but also their future social competence that relies on these early building blocks. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG Community-based Research with Vulnerable

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book advocates for community-based research with vulnerable populations within the field of higher education. The chapters outline how research can democratize knowledge generation to make it more accessible and socially relevant, and emphasizes the value of the lived and experiential knowledge of vulnerable and marginalized populations. Rooted in a critique of the current practices of higher education that fail to support participatory and transformative research, the research is structured at micro, macro and meso levels to ultimately emancipate colonized thinking of stakeholders about power, privilege and participation. Focusing primarily on various contexts within the Global South, the contributors argue that the time is ripe for community-based research which combines the theoretical knowledge of the academy with the local, experiential knowledge of those experiencing the consequences of social inequality to co-construct knowledge for change.Table of ContentsPart 1: Community-based Research in Higher EducationChapter 1: Community-based Research in Higher Education: Research Partnerships for the Common Good, Lesley Wood and Ortrun Zuber-SkerrittChapter 2: Rethinking Ethical Processes for Community-based Research Partnerships: Lessons from Practice, Mary Brydon-Miller and Lesley WoodChapter 3: Building Capacity for Community-based Research, Lesley WoodPart 2: Case Studies of Partnership for Community-based Research with Vulnerable PopulationsChapter 4: Developing and Sustaining Community-University Partnerships: Reflecting on Relationship Building, Heloise Sathorar and Deirdre GeduldChapter 5: Community-based Research to Enhance Holistic Wellbeing in School Contexts, Ansie Elizabeth Kitching and Robert Tubb CarstensChapter 6: Developing Relationship for Community-based Research at Rhodes University: Values, Principles and Challenges, Diana Hornby and Savathrie MaistryChapter 7: A Community-based Approach to Engaging Older Adults in the Promotion of their Health and Wellbeing Through Social Dance, Orfhlaith Ni Bhriain and Amanda CliffordChapter 8: Community-based Research for Peace: A Case Study in Colombia, Doris SantosChapter 9: An Appreciative Inquiry Approach to Community-based Research for Development of a Social Enterprise, Karen Venter and Alfi MoolmanChapter 10: "University Mtaani”: A Case Study of Service Learning and Civic Engagement for Social Transformation in Nairobi’s Informal Settlements, Nkatha Mercy and Jonas Yawovi DzinekouChapter 11: The Importance of Access, Time and Space: Developing the Collective Change Facilitator Role as Part of a Multi-Partner Research Programme, Sara Branch, Kate Freiberg, Ross Homel and Charmaine StubbsPart 3: A Framework for Conducting Ethical, Inclusive and Sustainable Community-based ResearchChapter 12: Towards Holistic and Community-led Development: The GULL System for Self-Directed Lifelong Action Learning, Richard TeareChapter 13: Community-based Research with Marginalized Populations as Transformative Adult Education, Lesley WoodChapter 14: An Ethical, Inclusive and Sustainable Framework for Community-based Research in Higher Education, Lesley Wood

  • Springer International Publishing AG Measurement Across the Sciences: Developing a Shared Concept System for Measurement

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book proposes a conceptual framework for understanding measurement across a broad range of scientific fields and areas of application, such as physics, engineering, education, and psychology. It addresses contemporary issues and controversies within measurement in light of the framework, including operationalism, definitional uncertainty, and the relations between measurement and computation, and describes how the framework, operating as a shared concept system, supports understanding measurement’s work in different domains, using examples in the physical and human sciences. This revised and expanded second edition features a new analysis of the analogies and the differences between the error/uncertainty-related approach adopted in physical measurement and the validity-related approach adopted in psychosocial measurement. In addition, it provides a better analysis and presentation of measurement scales, in particular about their relations with quantity units, and introduces the measurand identification/definition as a part of the "Hexagon Framework" along with new examples from the physical and psychosocial sciences. Researchers and academics across a wide range of disciplines including biological, physical, social, and behavioral scientists, as well as specialists in measurement and philosophy appreciate the work’s fresh and provocative approach to the field at a time when sound measurements of complex scientific systems are increasingly essential to solving critical global problems.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Fundamental Concepts in Measurement.- Technical and Cultural Contexts for Measurement Systems.- Philosophical Perspectives on Measurement.- What is Measured?.- Values, Scales, and the Existence of Properties.- Modeling Measurement and Its Quality.- Conclusion.

Table of ContentsMethodologische Stichworte - Die Prinzipien der objektiv-hermeneutischen Textinterpretation - Geschichten - Lesarten - Fallstrukturhypothese - Eine Fallrekonstruktion am Beispiel eines Lehrerinterviews - Zur schnellen Orientierung

Table of ContentsPositionen und Traditionen – Theoretische und methodologische Grundlagen.- Anwendungsfelder und subdisziplinäre Arbeitsgebiete.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis short monograph provides a synthesis of new research on sampling designs that are dependent on sample moments or the order statistics of auxiliary variables. The range of survey sampling methods and their applications has gradually increased over time, and these applications have led to new theoretical solutions that provide better sampling designs or estimators. Recently, several important properties of sampling designs have been discovered, and many new methods have been published. Offering an overview of these developments, this book describes sampling designs dependent on the sample generalized variance of auxiliary variables, examines properties of sampling designs proportional to functions of sample order statistics of the auxiliary variable, and takes into account continuous sampling designs. The text will be useful for students and statisticians whose work involves survey sampling, and it will inspire those looking for new sampling designs dependent on auxiliary variables. Table of ContentsIntroduction and Basic Sampling Strategies.- Sampling Designs Dependent on Sample Moments of Auxiliary Variables.- Sampling Designs Based on Order Statistics of Auxiliary Variable.- Simulation Analysis of the Efficiency of the Strategies.- Sampling Designs dependent on a Continuous Auxiliary Variable.
