Peeters Publishers Believers in the Nation: European Religious
Book SynopsisExisting literature on the subject has pointed out that the sense of belonging generated by nineteenth-century nationalism often replaced religions in their public role of shaping common identity. In fact, religions did not get secluded into the private sphere but kept playing a role in the national discourse. A difference need nevertheless be detected between majority and minority religion. If the former could present itself as a societal cohesive factor, the latter has a more complicated task. The contributions in this volume reconstruct the adaptation strategies of nineteenth-century Catholic, Jewish and Protestant minorities in Europe as determined both by national contexts and internal dynamics. The two recurrent strategies of accommodation and confrontation took place in several forms and stages. The volume aims therefore at reconstructing the position of religious minorities in different European contexts (United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy) in the period 1815-1914 but also at reassessing the concept of `religious minority’ as a factor of cultural change.

Peeters Publishers A Cause DES Peres: Le Merite Des Peres Dans La

Urim Publications Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach: Life, Mission, and Legacy
Book SynopsisRabbi Shlomo Carlebach—a man considered the most influential composer of Jewish religious music of the 20th century and a progenitor of the modern neo-Hasidic renaissance—is the focus of this systematic study. The book presents a scholarly analysis of his teachings, innovations, and music and examines Carlebach’s life and career via the prism of the historical and cultural developments of his time, including the Holocaust, the Six-Day War, the hippie phenomenon, the New Age movement, and other events that were channeling the course of Jewish life. It also attempts to understand the roots of the Carlebach phenomenon and its wide-range appeal, but above all, this book provides a new framework to evaluate and appreciate the unique form of heartfelt Judaism, joyful optimism, and soulful rejuvenation that Shlomo Carlebach inspired.Trade Review"At last, a carefully researched and meticulously annotated biography of Shlomo Carlebach. A must-read for anyone interested in Reb Shlomo and his legacy." -- Professor Jonathan D Sarna, author, "American Judaism: A History""Dr Ophir worked tirelessly, not only collecting and organising data on three continents, but gained the trust of hundreds of people who told him their experiences with Reb Shlomo. The result is a documentary history that promises to be the definitive biographical study of Reb Shlomo's life and career." -- Professor Shaul Magid, Jay & Jeannie Schottenstein Professor of Modern Judaism, Indiana University

Urim Publications To Unify a Nation: My Vision for the Future of
Book SynopsisExploring the issues of the separation between religion and state in Israel, this book by Knesset parliament member Rabbi Dov Lipman lays out his vision for the future. Lipman was elected to the Yesh Atid party, which, though largely secular, calls for a more moderate and open form of Judaism. His is a voice of reason in the religious debates and battles that have threatened to undermine Jewish unity in Israel and around the world. Lipman has observed firsthand the polarization, extremism, and discrimination that have been on the upswing in Israel, and his book examines specific practical issues rather than general theological questions in the Israeli political scene. As the only ultra-Orthodox member of the current coalition, he offers a unique insight into the internal societal struggles of the Jewish community as well as the hope for a better future for both Israel and Jews around the world.Trade Review"[Lipman] deserve[s] appreciation for [his] activities which seek to build bridges of unity, understanding, and tolerance between the religious and non-religious populations in Israel. [His] public actions serve as an example of responsible rabbinic work which adds honor to the Jewish nation and to the State of Israel and reflects the deep ethics and morals of Judaism in its glory." --Shimon Peres, president of Israel"What unites a brilliant, optimistic, and indefatigable Orthodox rabbi like Dov Lipman and... me? [...] This book, much like its author, deals with this problem with courage and wisdom. This is not simply a book but a call to action and the beginning of a discussion." --Yair Lapid, Finance Minister of the State of Israel"MK Rabbi Dov Lipman's new book is important for two primary reasons. Firstly, it deals with the fundamental issues affecting our nation and the way it ought to look.... Secondly, it was written by a young politician who, in his own combination of traditional observance and involvement in the broader world, presents a personal example worthy of emulation and representative of how many of the seeming paradoxes affecting Israel might be resolved." --Natan Sharansky, Chairman of the Executive, Jewish Agency for Israel"Exploring the issues of the separation between religion and state in Israel, this book by Knesset parliament member Rabbi Dov Lipman lays out his vision for the future."
