NIAS Press Modern Muslim Identities: Negotiating Religion
Book SynopsisThis book explores a central tension in identity politics: how the state, civil society and people in general may want to create and maintain cultural, religious and social cohesion while paradoxically their practices in everyday life often run counter to this. Malaysia is no exception. Here, a political elite maintains control and cultural dominance but must juggle political pressure from Islamic and Malay supremacists with that from moderate civil society groups. This gives rise to a complex interplay of do mination, accommodation and negotiation between the state and its citizens. At the heart of this study is the conjuncture between Malay ethnicity and Islamic faith, hence its examination of the state discourse on 'civilizational Islam'. However, other areas are also explored, including the arts as a contested space. The result is a thought-provoking study combining philosophical and social theory with anthropological insights.Trade Review'This important study sheds new light on changing Muslim identities in contemporary Malaysia, questioning existing distinctions between state and civil society, religion and secularism and ethnicity and religion and calling for new ways of understanding processes of Islamisation in the modern world.' - Joel S. Kahn, La Trobe University 'It is simply a first-class piece of work, one of real intellectual distinction and substantive originality. It offers an important commentary on the current Malaysian situation, and how it has been sedulously fashioned over recent history, and so makes a significant contribution to Malaysian studies.' - Clive Kessler, University of New South Wales 'This marks an original and very timely contribution to Malaysian studies. Hoffstaedter has demonstrated the profound effects of state religious policies and ideologies upon the everyday identities of practicing Muslims. He does this with great ethnographic nuance and original theoretical insights.' - Andrew Willford, Cornell University 'Gerhard Hoffstaedter presents a thought provoking case study on the many social and political forces that have interacted to push Malay identity along an exclusive trajectory. - This is a dangerous pattern, unfortunately discernable also in other parts of the Muslim world.' - Shahram Akbarzadeh, University of MelbourneTable of ContentsPreface and Acknowledgments; 1. NIAS Press Rethinking Community in Myanmar: Practices of
Book SynopsisThis is the first anthropological monograph of Muslim and Hindu lives in contemporary Myanmar. In it, Judith Beyer introduces the concept of "we-formation" as a fundamental yet underexplored capacity of humans to relate to one another outside of and apart from demarcated ethno-religious lines and corporate groups. We-formation complements the established sociological concept of community, which suggests shared origins, beliefs, values, and belonging. Community is not only a key term in academic debates; it is also a hot topic among Beyer's interlocutors in urban Yangon, who draw on it to make claims about themselves and others. Invoking "community" is a conscious and strategic act, even as it asserts and reinforces stereotypes of Hindus and Muslims as minorities. In Myanmar, this understanding of community keeps self-identified members of these groups in a subaltern position vis-a-vis the Buddhist majority population. Beyer demonstrates the concept's enduring political and legal role since being imposed on "Burmese Indians" under colonial British rule. But individuals are always more than members of groups. The author draws on ethnomethodology and existential anthropology to reveal how people's bodily movements, verbal articulations, and non-verbal expressions in communal spaces are crucial elements in practices of we-formation. Her participant observation in mosques and temples, during rituals and processions, and in private homes reveals a sensitivity to tacit and intercorporeal phenomena that is still rare in anthropological analysis. Rethinking Community in Myanmar develops a theoretical and methodological approach that reconciles individuality and intersubjectivity and that is applicable far beyond the Southeast Asian context. Its focus on we-formation also offers insights into the dynamics of resistance to the attempted military coup of 2021. The newly formed civil disobedience movement derives its power not only from having a common enemy, but also from each individual's determination to live freely in a more just society.Trade Review“Beyer’s book and her fascinating fieldwork in the varied groups of Indian descent in Rangoon, reshapes not just how we understand people who have long been dismissively homogenized in Burmese and academic discourse, but it offers insightful reformulations of how people construct identity unlimited by the categories imposed upon them.”(Alicia Turner, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Religious Studies at York University); “Judith Beyer’s impressive ethnographic account of Muslims and Hindus in Yangon invites us to consider the dialectic between everyday experiences of co-existence and categorical claims of community without collapsing the distinctions between these practices. This monograph introduces a valuable theoretical framework for delving into the formation of we-ness without assuming that this is inevitably conjoined with processes of othering. I expect that concepts like ‘we-formation’ will quickly be adopted by scholars in a variety of fields including myself.” (Vered Amit, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada); "Judith Beyer’s brilliant ethnography of ‘practices of we-formation’ among Muslims and Hindus in urban Yangon compellingly demonstrates that neither the individual nor the community is sui generis; each is a condition of the possibility of the other. Beyer’s in-depth fieldwork, vivid writing, and theoretical insights make this book a stunning contribution to existential anthropology.” (Michael Jackson, Distinguished Professor of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School)

Peeters Publishers The Hidden Heritage of Diaspora Judaism: Essays
Book SynopsisIn recent scholarly debates concerning the history of the Jews in Roman times, the study of the Diaspora has begun to play an increasingly important part. New archaeological and inscriptional discoveries have provided scholars with much evidence to demonstrate that, in later Roman times, the majority of Jews lived outside the Land of Israel, in communities that could be found in virtually every corner of the Roman world. An investigation of how all these Jewish communities related to the Greco-Roman world surrounding them has become a central theme in the study of ancient Jewish history. In the present collection of essays, Dr. L.V. Rutgers, author of the award-winning The Jews in Late Ancient Rome (1995), investigates how Diaspora Jews defined their identity while interacting with temporary non-Jewish society. Bringing to bear on this issue archaeological, epigraphical, and historical evidence, the author investigates Jewish and non-Jewish evidence side-by-side in an attempt to shed new light on the question of how physical remains can help us to revise current perceptions of Jewish life in the Diaspora. In an introductory chapter Dr. Rutgers uses the evidence collected elsewhere in this book to argue that the Jews of antiquity must have had a very clearly defined sense of identity. Discussing some of the methodological problems that face scholars working in this particular field of study, Dr. Rutgers also questions the idea that variety is characteristic of Diaspora Judaism.

Peeters Publishers Spinoza Hebraisant: L'hebreu Dans Le Tractatus

Peeters Publishers Les Dialectes Kurdes Meridionaux: Etude

Peeters Publishers Redefining Christian Identity: Cultural
Book Synopsis"Cultural interaction in the Middle East since the Rise of Islam" - such was the title of a combined research project of the Universities of Leiden and Groningen aimed at describing the various ways in which the Christian communities of the Middle East expressed their distinct cultural identity in Muslim societies. As part of the project the symposium "Redefining Christian Identity, Christian cultural strategies since the rise of Islam" took place at Groningen University on April 7-10, 1999. This book contains the proceedings of this conference. From the articles it becomes clear that a number of distinct "cultural strategies" can be identified, some of which were used very frequently, others only in certain groups or at particular periods of time. The three main strategies that are represented in the papers of this volume are: (i) reinterpretation of the pre-Islamic Christian heritage; (ii) inculturation of elements from the new Islamic context; (iii) isolation from the Islamic context. Viewed in time, it is clear that the "reinterpretation" of older Christian heritage was particularly important in the first two centuries after the rise of Islam, the seventh and eighth centuries, that "inculturation" was the dominant theme of the Abbasid period, in the ninth to twelfth centuries, whereas from the Mongol period onwards, from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries, "isolation" more and more often occurs, although inculturation of elements from the predominantly Muslim environment never came to a complete standstill.

Peeters Publishers Jewish Ceremonial Objects in Transcultural
Book SynopsisThe opening of a new permanent exhibition on religion in the Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam in November 2004, which was accompanied by a catalogue entitled "Gifts from the Heart: Ceremonial Objects from the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam", gave rise to the idea for this volume. Both this publication and the preceding catalogue on the museum's textiles collection (1997) explore Dutch Jewish ceremonial objects, their aesthetic quality and historical background. This issue of "Studia Rosenthaliana" covers a wider field: the setting is Europe rather than local, and the primary focus is ceremonial objects in their transcultural context. The first cluster of contributions explore the origins of the forms and symbolism of various ceremonial objects, and interpret them as the outcome of the interplay between Jewish (religious) tradition and the surrounding culture. The articles in the second group deal with the impact of specific historical circumstances on objects, their conception and production. In the third section, two inventories of ceremonial objects belonging to Amsterdam's Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are presented. Following our tradition, the volume concludes with an appropriate item from the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana.

Peeters Publishers Language Politics and Language Survival: Yiddish
Book Synopsis"Language Politics and Language Survival: Yiddish among the haredim in post-war Britain" outlines the history and development of the Yiddish language as it is used among Ultra-Orthodox Jews in contemporary Britain. The language policies of these communities are analysed and placed within the greater socio-historical and religious context of rabbinic justifications for the use of Jewish languages, and of Yiddish in particular. Reasons for the general abandonment of Yiddish outside of the "haredi" world are also summarized and placed in juxtaposition with the Yiddish language of loyalty of the "haredim". Yiddish language and corpus planning in "haredi" schools is analysed using communal documents and newspaper articles, educational assessments of Jewish schools compiled by "Her Majesty's Inspectors", a number of interviews with communal educators, tape recordings of lessons given in Yiddish, and observations made during my own visits to "haredi" educational institutions. A significant part of this book is dedicated to the analysis of the Yiddish language itself as it is currently used in Britain. The analysis of spoken Yiddish is based on recordings of speech patterns collected in the course of field work in "haredi" schools in London and Manchester and focuses primarily on dialectal usage based on religious sect and the geographic region within Britain. A brief sociological analysis of "haredi" literature in Yiddish is provided in order to demonstrate the ideological function of Yiddish language texts in contemporary Britain, and in the "haredi" world in general. The primary materials used for this are texts produced by, and published within, the "haredi" communities of Britain.

Peeters Publishers Sources and Approaches Across Disciplines in Near
Book SynopsisThis volume collects papers from the 24th Congress of the Union Europeenne des Arabisants et Islamisants (UEAI) in 2008 at the University of Leipzig. Original research and new approaches illustrate its theme of Sources and Approaches across Disciplines in Near Eastern Studies. The studies span Muslim culture, civilizations, and intellectual thought in the medieval and modern periods. The contributions demonstrate the benefits of following methodological and interdisciplinary approaches that draw upon literary criticism, sociology and anthropology in the field of Qur'anic studies, religion, philosophy and mysticism; state and society; literature and rhetoric; philology and linguistics; mathematics and astronomy; art and epigraphy; and Islamic sciences and economic history. The volume also highlights the commonalities and overlaps that exist between these different branches and fosters cooperative study across a wide cultural, historical, and sociological milieu. Rather than following an isolated approach to their areas of study, academics in different fields of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies benefited from one another's methodologies, and collectively built a wide body of knowledge.

Peeters Publishers Arabic and Islamic Studies in Europe and Beyond.
Book SynopsisThis volume presents the proceedings of the 26th Conference of the Union Européenne des Arabisants et Islamisants that took place in Basel, Switzerland, in September 2012. The theme of the volume, "Arabic and Islamic Studies in Europe and Beyond", indicates that research in Arabic and Islamic Studies is not only carried out in Europe but also in many non-European regions of the world. Furthermore, it expresses that Muslim history no longer represents an exclusive field of research remote from public attention. Nevertheless, the focus of Arabic and Islamic Studies is still highly specialized, calling on researchers to devote their academic lives to learning and practicing the major (and minor) languages of Islamic history and culture. In this regard, Arabic and Islamic Studies need to find an equilibrium, again and again, between disciplinary immersion and intellectual openness. The present collection contributes to these endeavors and struggles while reflecting the highly variegated nature of research in Islamic and Arabic Studies.
