Guilford Publications Natural Causes: Essays in Ecological Marxism
Book SynopsisEconomic growth since the Industrial Revolution has been achieved at great cost both to the natural environment and to the autonomy of communities. What can a Marxist perspective contribute to understanding this disturbing legacy, and mitigating its impact on future generations? Renowned social theorist James O'Connor shows how the policies and imperatives of business and government influence--and are influenced by--environmental and social change. Probing the relationship between economy, nature, and society, O'Connor argues that environmental and social crises pose a growing threat to capitalism itself. These illuminating essays and case studies demonstrate the power of ecological Marxist analysis for understanding our diverse environmental and social history, for grounding economic behavior in the real world, and for formulating and evaluating new political strategies. Trade ReviewJames O'Connor's work is distinctive in that it constitutes the first fully developed, concrete analysis of how the undermining of the environment is actually undermining the conditions of production of the global capitalist society in which we live, threatening the very process of capital accumulation that lies at the heart of the modern world economy.... Brilliantly argued, O'Connor's work constitutes the indispensable starting point for a consideration of the interrelationship of socioeconomic and environmental crises in our time, and will be of immense interest to readers coming from a wide variety of perspectives. Readers of this volume will discover a rich body of work delving into a wide range of environmental problems, from environmental justice, to the Gulf War, to 'What is Ecological Socialism?'. This is a treasure-trove of environmental thought by one of the great social theorists of our day. --John Bellamy Foster, Co-Editor, Organization & Environment; author of The Vulnerable Planet: A Short Economic History of the EnvironmentThe neo-liberal pundits who dance on Marx's grave will hate this book. Whether exposing the hidden logic of the Gulf War or deciphering the relations of production in a new-growth forest, Natural Causes is an intellectual tour de force. James O'Connor, once again, demonstrates that he is America's most original social theorist. --Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz and Ecology of FearThe good news is that the environmental and socialist movements are beginning to create a dialogue, which can immeasurably strengthen both. James O'Connor has been one of the country's leading intellectual figures in that dialogue, and his new book shows, in a compelling, sophisticated way, how both movements must come together. --Donald Worster, Hall Distinguished Professor of American History, University of Kansas - Provocative....The book should help dispel suspicions that the post-1989 green turn of many socialists was opportunistic. Recommended for graduate students and faculty. --Choice, 12/21/1997ƒƒ College-level students of Marxist theory will welcome a coverage which links business and political policies with issues of environmental and social change. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd The Japanese Talmud: Antisemitism in East Asia
Book SynopsisThe image of Jews in East Asia is a strange mixture of opposites, a paradoxical blend of admiration and mockery, identification and denial. This book explores what 'Jew' means to many East Asians, and whether it is anything that Jewish people themselves would recognise. There is clearly a positive fascination: various bestsellers entitled Talmud are found in vending machines and public schools, while private 'Jewish education' institutions have opened across South Korea, claiming to improve children's IQ. People can stay at the Talmud Business Hotel in Taiwan, or attend Chinese centres for Jewish Studies with academics who have never met a Jew. There is a legend that Japanese people are a Lost Tribe of Israel, and 'Anne's day', named after Anne Frank, is a euphemism for menstruation. Yet the region also shows some of the world's highest rates of antisemitism, manifesting in disturbing ways: Taiwan's concentration camp–themed restaurant, or South Korea's 'Adolf Hitler Techno Bar & Cocktail Show'. By integrating scholarship on antisemitism, East Asian Studies and cognitive science, Schilling uncovers antisemitism's global, sometimes dualistic nature; not Western, and always persistent. He offers ground-breaking insight, redefining how we understand East Asia, antisemitism, and Judaism as a globalised religion.Trade Review'Truly insightful and thought-provoking. Tracing the origin and rise of the Talmud publications vogue in East Asia, this is a critical and novel analysis of contemporary attitudes toward Jews.' -- Rotem Kowner, Professor of Japanese Studies, University of Haifa, and editor of Jewish Communities in Modern Asia'This wonderful, ground-breaking book uses a combination of case studies, theorising and cognitive science to investigate antisemitism's co-existence with philosemitism in East Asian culture. Every serious scholar of antisemitism needs to read this original and important contribution to the literature.' -- Lesley Klaff, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Contemporary Antisemitism'An important study not only of the East Asian manifestations of antisemitism and philosemitism, but also, especially via the notions of bisemitism and antisemitism as storytelling, perspectives that every student of antisemitism needs at least to consider. A useful contribution to combatting antisemitism.' -- Paul Hedges, Associate Professor in Interreligious Studies, Nanyang Technological University

Taylor & Francis Ltd Environmental Health Hazards and Social Justice:
Book SynopsisThis book provides geographic perspectives and approaches for use in assessing the distribution of environmental health hazards and disease outcomes among disadvantaged population groups. Estimates suggest that about forty per cent of the global burden of disease is attributable to exposures to biological and chemical pathogens in the physical environment. And with today's rapid rate of globalization, and these hazardous health effects are likely to increase, with low income and underrepresented communities facing even greater risks. In many places around the world, marginalized communities unwillingly serve as hosts of noxious facilities such as chemical industrial plants, extractive facilities (oil and mining) and other destructive land use activities. Others are being used as illegal dumping grounds for hazardous materials and electronic wastes resulting in air, soil and groundwater contamination. The book informs readers about the geography and emergent health risks that accompany the location of these hazards, with emphasis on vulnerable population groups. The approach is applications-oriented, illustrating the use of health data and geographic approaches to uncover the root causes, contextual factors and processes that produce contaminated environments. Case studies are drawn from the author's research in the United States and Africa, along with a literature review of related studies completed in Europe, Asia and South America. This comparative approach allows readers to better understand the manifestation of environmental hazards and inequities at different spatial scales with localized disparities evident in both developed and developing countries.Trade Review'This book is comprehensive, and provides material which will be excellent for both introductory and graduate level courses in environmental health, environmental justice, social justice, health geography and population health. Conceptualizations of race and ethnicity and discussions of the role of social and economic factors in health disparities add to the strength of the book.' Isaac Luginaah, Associate Professor & Canada Research Chair in Health Geography, The University of Western Ontario, Canada 'A much needed reference in medical geography and environmental epidemiology that is richly illustrated and offers an accessible introduction to the visualization and spatial analysis of environmental health data. Academics now have the perfect tool to expose undergraduate and master students to the fascinating world of medical and environmental geography applied to important societal issues, such as environmental justice and health disparities.' Pierre Goovaerts, Chief Scientist, BioMedware Inc. 'Using different geographic scales and an integrative approach, this outstanding book analyzes the social injustices and disparities in context of environmental hazards and associated health risks. This is the first book of its kind to critically explore the interactions among environmental hazards, heath, and social justice. Florence M. Margai is a dedicated scholar who has been studying environmental and social disparities throughout her career. Taylor & Francis Ltd Globalism, Localism and Identity: New
Book SynopsisGlobal economic and social forces are affecting everyone, everywhere. However, their influence is shaped by local communities' interpretation of these forces and responses to them. Social identities provide a guide; they are the product of history, culture, economy, patterns of governance and degree of community cohesion. How the global and the local connect and reconfigure at various scales and through different cultures is explained in this forward-looking volume. The book's thesis, namely that localism is the crucial complement to globalism, is supported by a range of European case studies. Local responses to globalizing forces depend on the nature of the interlinkages in governance from international structures, through multilateral organizations to nation states, regions and localities, as these are mediated through social-local identity. The contributors draw on numerous themes in examining the interaction between the global and the local, such as decay and revitalization, local identity and empowerment, opportunism through sustainability and governance for the transition. This is a pioneering publication utilizing an innovative person-centred methodology. It makes an original and important contribution to the study of contemporary societies and is aimed at anyone interested in the social, economic, political, cultural and environmental implications of any move towards sustainability.Trade Review'This is an important contribution to the field and of a uniformly high standard throughout.' Taylor & Francis Ltd The Politics of Islam in the Sahel: Between
Book Synopsis‘Ideologies need enemies to thrive, religion does not’. Using the Sahel as a source of five comparative case studies, this volume aims to engage in the painstaking task of disentangling Islam from the political ideologies that have issued from its theologies to fight for governmental power and the transformation of society. While these ideologies tap into sources of religious legitimacy, the author shows that they are fundamentally secular or temporal enterprises, defined by confrontation with other political ideologies–both progressive and liberal–within the arena of nation states. Their objectives are the same as these other ideologies, i.e., to harness political power for changing national societies, and they resort to various methods of persuasion, until they break down into violence. The two driving questions of the book are, whence come these ideologies, and why do they–sometimes–result in violence? Ideologies of Salafi radicalism are at work in the five countries of the Sahel region, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, (Northern) Nigeria and Senegal, but violence has broken out only in Mali and Northern Nigeria. Using a theoretical framework of ideological development and methods of historical analysis, Idrissa traces the emergence of Salafi radicalism in each of these countries as a spark ignited by the shock between concurrent processes of Islamization and colonization in the 1940s. However, while the spark eventually ignited a blaze in Mali and Nigeria, it has only led to milder political heat in Niger and Senegal and has had no burning effect at all in Burkina Faso. By meticulously examining the development of Salafi radicalism ideologies over time in connection with developments in national politics in each of the countries, Idrissa arrives at compelling conclusions about these divergent outcomes. Given the many similarities between the countries studied, these divergences show, in particular, that history, the behaviour of state leaders and national sociologies matter–against assumptions of ‘natural’ contradictions between religion (Islam) and secularism or democracy. This volume offers a new perspective in discussions on ideology, which remains–as is shown here–the independent variable of many key contemporary political processes, either hidden in plain sight or disguised in a religious garb. Maney Publishing Camorristi, Politicians and Businessmen: The
Book SynopsisThis work presents a detailed study of the political role of a criminal organization, the Neapolitan Camorra, in its historical context, that of Naples over the last fifty years. In Campania, until 1991, the population tacitly accepted the relationship between the Camorra and the local political elite (based on the exchange of votes for state contracts and protection), and because of the lack of reliable sources it could not seriously be studied by political scientists. In 1991, however, a law was passed which gave generous remission of sentences to criminals who wanted to cooperate with the police. Following this, many members of the Camorra revealed important aspects of the criminal, economic and political activities of their organization. This new information has permitted a re-examination of the Camorra and has provided material for the story to be told.Table of ContentsIntroduction Towards a Better Understanding of Organized Crime; I: The Transformation of the Neapolitan Camorra; One: The Campania Region: The Territory, the People, and the Polity; Two: The Transformation of the Camorra; II: Who Are the Members?; Three: 'You are not born elinquent ... 1; Four: ...You become one'; III: The Resistible Rise of the Camorra; Five: The Camorras in the 1950s 1; Six: The Camorras in the 1980s–2000s; IV: The Camorras' Relationship with Politics; Seven: The Camorras' Exchange Currency 1; Eight: Political and Business 'Obligations'; Conclusion

Springer International Publishing AG Uncommodified Blackness: The African Male
Book SynopsisThis book is a study of the lived experience of African men in Australia and New Zealand. The author employs a relational account of racism which foregrounds how the colonial shaped the contemporary, with the settler states of contemporary Australia and New Zealand having been moulded by their colonial histories. Uncommodified Blackness examines the changing racial conditions in Australia and New Zealand, inspired by the view that as racial conditions change globally, prevailing racial modalities in these two countries must be reexamined and theory must be developed or revised as appropriate. Students and scholars across a range of social science disciplines will find this book of interest, particularly those with an interest in refugees, immigration, race and masculinity.Trade Review“Mandisi Majavu’s book, Uncommodified Blackness. The African Male Experience in Australia and New Zealand offers a detailed, critical examination of the everyday, cultural and social experiences of African male migrants in Australia and New Zealand. … this is a welcome contribution to the limited sociological knowledge and understanding of everyday life experiences of Africans living in the West, and especially in Australia and New Zealand, given their small but growing African populations.” (Louise Owusu-Kwarteng, Ethnic and Racial Studies, September, 2017)“The book offers valuable insights for studies of refugees and migration, global African and urban geographies, and the past-presents of white supremacy. … Majavu’s work highlights the exciting insights afforded by closer ties between African Geographies and this new body of scholarship. It pushes us toward a diversely imagined Africa, one inclusive of global African and Afro-descendent communities, marked by, and resisting, colonial pasts and presents, and invigorated by the long legacies of anti-racist thought.” (Caroline Faria, African Geographical Review, July, 2017) Table of Contents1.
