  • A Research Agenda for Social Networks and Social

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd A Research Agenda for Social Networks and Social

Book SynopsisThis cutting-edge Research Agenda demonstrates how social network analysis can be used to address problems of social resilience and advance knowledge and policy intervention in the face of the existential crises that threaten our contemporary societies.Highlighting the role of social networks in supporting social resilience, contributions from experienced and innovative thinkers across the social sciences encourage readers to think in network terms about issues of social change and survival in situations of vulnerability. Chapters apply innovative social network thinking and analyses to a diverse range of existential societal challenges, including marginalized communities, emerging labour markets, governments, food systems, educational establishments, online social media, and the environment. The book further advances critical research frontiers that will inform the building of more resilient societies and ecosystems and ultimately strengthen our capacity to project ourselves into the future. Combining network-based critical analysis with in-depth knowledge of policy design and intervention, this dynamic Research Agenda will be an essential tool for postgraduate students carrying out research in the social sciences. Its provision of state-of-the-art research agendas in eighteen vital domains of social life will benefit analysts and consultants designing, implementing, and evaluating policy in these areas.Trade Review‘A stimulating read that has left me – as any good book on a developing topic should – with more questions raised than answered. Its mix of perspectives is truly inspiring because it is unusually rich and still necessarily incomplete.’ -- Ulrik Brandes, ETH Zurich, Switzerland‘This timely book persuasively illustrates the importance of a social network perspective in unpacking, understanding and improving social resilience at this critical point in our history. With contributions from a diversity of expert social network scholars, this is a must-read for anyone looking to understand social resilience and enact social change.’ -- Dean Lusher, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia‘Climate change, pandemics, misinformation, food and natural resource scarcity and mass migration all pose existential threats to the stability of social systems. Resilience as a context-transcending concept is an exciting idea, and this book's proposal to use network analysis as a unifying method and common language for studying it makes total sense.’ -- Arnout van de Rijt, European University Institute, Italy‘If you are one of the many people now interested in the topic of “resilience,” this is a book of perspectives you will want to read. The chapters are independent explorations of how the social network around a person or group affects resilience — and few things matter as much as the people around us for who is held down versus who is response enabled. The introductory overview chapter is a gem. I have my favorites among the chapters, but that just reflects my own thinking. This book is much broader than that, so I do not offer what could be taken as invidious applause. Let me just say that the book is a seedbed of promising ideas; so many new directions for research. Bravo to editors and authors.’ -- Ronald Burt, Bocconi University, Italy and University of Chicago, USTable of ContentsContents: Introduction to social networks and social resilience ix Emmanuel Lazega, Rafael P.M. • The Sash on the Mersey: The Orange Order in

Liverpool University Press The Sash on the Mersey: The Orange Order in

Book SynopsisThe book examines how an organisation originating in late eighteenth-century Ireland became a significant and controversial element in Liverpool history. Using a wide range of sources including rarely accessed Orange Order records it places the Order within an early nineteenth-century Liverpool context of apocalyptic evangelical Protestantism, a labour market dominated by irregular dock work, a growing influx of immigrant Catholic Irish, marked residential segregation and sporadic civil conflict. It explores how the Order survived official disapproval, dissolution and schism to become deeply rooted within Protestant working-class communities. It analyses the attractions of lodge life, the appeal of ritual, colourful regalia and 12th July processions, the intense social bonding within lodges, the mutual support provided in adversity and measure taken to guard and transmit their world view. The intense royalism and patriotism of the Order and its troubled relationship with the Church of England are examined plus its role in sustaining the working class Tory vote which contributed to a century long Conservative hegemony in city politics. The book concludes with the cultural and socio-economic changes in British society which marginalised the core concerns of the Order, triggering decline in strength, visibility and significance in civic life.Trade Review'Busteed’s interrogation of England’s most important centre of Orangeism is brilliantly illuminated by the discovery of a rich seam of lost archive material and his deft reading of those records. Covering the city’s history, the place of Orangeism in Liverpool’s civic history, the social and economic aspects of the organisation, and its political, imperial, and religious manifestations, this is a strikingly revealing and original work.' • The Growth of Cities

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Growth of Cities

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisTo understand why some regions grow and others stagnate, we need to understand the interactions between economic growth, economic geography and the economics of innovation. Each of these individual approaches has strengths and weaknesses, but when integrated it is possible, as evidenced by this volume, to develop an appropriate model of technology-led regional economic development. This authoritative collection presents a selection of key previously published articles which investigate these three perspectives. The volume explores the importance of human capital, entrepreneurship, clusters, and competition and public policy to the growth of cities. The editor has written a new introduction which highlights the contribution of each article, and calls for a closer collaboration between economics and regional science in order to develop a new approach to the study of the growth of cities.Trade Review'Contemporary cities are of at least two kinds: those that are vibrant and growing and those that are lagging. While this is nothing new the reasons are, at least in part, different than in past generations. This book is a collection of 'modern classics' about the forces of growth in the late 20th and early 21st century in general and more specifically in agglomerated concentrations including cities. Human capital, agglomeration, knowledge spread or spillovers, industrial clusters, concentration of creative people, and global competition driven by a huge expansion of low cost labor and explosive innovation all play a role. The book provides most of the best material that has been published on these topics and their role in city growth and decline. It is a collection all students of the city and growth should have in their personal library.' -- Roger Stough, George Mason University, USTable of ContentsContents: Acknowledgements Introduction Zoltan J. Book SynopsisHow people can be persuaded to take more control of their own lives continues to be a subject of policy and academic debate, and the contribution of active citizens to improving societal well-being is high across different policy agendas. But the promotion of community self-help raises a wide range of questions - for people working in neighbourhoods, for policy makers, for politicians, and for residents themselves - about how we promote engagement, what would motivate people to become active, and more fundamentally about the ongoing relevance and value of community activity. "DIY Community Action" offers thought-provoking answers to these questions, based on detailed real-life evidence from over 100 community groups, each trying to combat neighbourhood problems. It presents a lively challenge to the existing thinking on contested debates, and proposes ways forward for community building. Policy Press International Community Organising: Taking Power,

Book SynopsisAs the Arab Spring continues to work through changes, the Occupy Movement is agitating for change and many are looking for alternatives in the face of global financial and political challenges, community organising offers a realistic way forward for many communities: a tried and tested way of improving people’s lives. This book is the first to explore the diverse history of community organising, telling stories of how it developed, its successes and failures, and the lessons that can be applied today. It analyses contemporary examples of practice from the USA, UK, India, South Africa, Cambodia and Australia against both wider theoretical frameworks and their ability to contribute to sustainable social change. It will be useful for a wide range of practitioners, students and researchers engaged in the struggle to develop new ways of doing community.Trade Review"As a long time community organizer working internationally with ACORN International, we have been waiting eagerly for Beck and Purcell's book. • Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Workers′ Movement in Russia

Book SynopsisPerestroika's fate was determined by the hostile reaction of the working class. Strikes, protest and the fear of working class action had a devastating impact, yet relatively little is known about the workers' movement during this period. This book surveys the development of the new workers' movement in Russia under perestroika to understand how it connected with the workers at shop floor level and the national and local political authorities to whom it addressed its demands, and whose development it sought to influence. Drawing on a programme of collaborative research on Russian industrial relations from 1987 to 1992, the authors use a series of case studies to explain the gulf between the thousands of tiny independent groups, often based in a single enterprise or even a single shop and regional and national organizations without a grassroots base. Extensive interviews with participants, tape and video recordings as well as substantial documentary material are used in case studies of the 1989 miners' strike in Kuzbass, the Kuzbass Regional Council of Workers' committees, the Independent Miner's Union in Kuzbass, Sotsprof in Moscow and the Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Unions.Table of ContentsThe workers' movement in Russia; the 1989 miner's strike in Kuzbass; the Kuzbass Regional Council of Workers' Committees; the Independent Miners' Union in Kazbass; Sotsprof; the Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Unions; is there a workers' movement in Russia.

  • The Seductions of Community: Emancipations,

SAR Press The Seductions of Community: Emancipations,

Book SynopsisThe concept of "community" is ubiquitous in the way we talk and think about life in the twenty-first century. Political and economic projects from rain forest conservation to urban empowerment zones focus on "the community" as the appropriate vehicle and target of change. Some scholars see a decline of community and predict dire social consequences; others criticize the concept itself for its ideological baggage and lack of clear definition. Moving the debate to a deeper level, the contributors to this volume aspire to understand the various ways "community" is deployed and the work it performs in different contexts. They compare the many cases where scholars and activists use "community" generically with instances in which the notion of community is less pervasive or even nonexistent. How does a community facilitate governance or capital accumulation? In what ways does it articulate these two forces in local and translocal contexts? What are the unintended consequences of deploying the concept--and what, too, are the potential consequences of criticizing our fascination with it? The essays demonstrate the critical value of using community as the focus of analysis, rather than simply an empty category of heuristic or descriptive convenience.

Book SynopsisThe 250th anniversary of the founding of Rutgers University is a perfect moment for the Rutgers community to reconcile its past, and acknowledge its role in the enslavement and debasement of African Americans and the disfranchisement and elimination of Native American people and culture.Scarlet and Black, Volume One documents the history of Rutgers’s connection to slavery, which was neither casual nor accidental—nor unusual. Like most early American colleges, Rutgers depended on slaves to build its campuses and serve its students and faculty; it depended on the sale of black people to fund its very existence. Scarlet and Black, Volume Two continues the work of the Committee on Enslaved and Disenfranchised Population in Rutgers History. This latest volume includes an introduction to the period from the end of the Civil War through WWII, a study of the first black students at Rutgers and New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and profiles of the earliest black women to matriculate at Douglass College.Scarlet and Black, Volume Three concludes this groundbreaking documentation and includes essays about Black and Puerto Rican students' experiences; the development of the Black Unity League; the Conklin Hall takeover; the divestment movement against South African apartheid; anti-racism struggles during the 1990s; and the Don Imus controversy and the 2007 Scarlet Knights women's basketball team. Scarlet and black are the colors Rutgers University uses to represent itself to the nation and world. They are the colors the athletes compete in, the graduates and administrators wear on celebratory occasions, and the colors that distinguish Rutgers from every other university in the United States. This body of work, however, uses these colors to signify something else: the blood that was spilled on the banks of the Raritan River by those dispossessed of their land and the bodies that labored unpaid and in bondage so that Rutgers could be built and sustained. The contributors to these volumes offer this history as a usable one—not to tear down or weaken this very renowned, robust, and growing institution—but to strengthen it and help direct its course for the future. To learn more about the work of the Committee on Enslaved and Disenfranchised Population in Rutgers History, visit the project's website at http://scarletandblack.rutgers.edu.

Book SynopsisWomen, people with disabilities and LGBTQ2+ people are more present on the sports scene, but important transformations are still needed in organizations so that these people are better represented and included in all sports disciplines. This book, which is the result of a research project conducted with sports organization managers, coaches, athletes, experts and other stakeholders in the field, proposes concrete solutions for sport organizations. Throughout the book we propose and explain good practices in the area of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Together with numerous testimonials and examples from the field, these practices adapted to the sport environment make it possible to overcome the barriers that prevent women and people from historically marginalized groups from participating in sport and from reaching leadership positions within these organizations. The practices presented in this book are based on an analytical framework for inclusion in organizations that can be applied beyond the Quebec and Canadian context.

Book SynopsisThis edited volume brings together a range of scholars to reflect on the varied ways in which caste is manifested and experienced in social life. Each chapter draws on different methods and approaches but all consider lived experiences and experiential narrations. Considering Guru and Sarukkai’s path-breaking work on ‘Experience, Caste and the Everyday Social’ (2019), this volume applies the insights of the theories to multiple settings, issues and communities. Unique to this volume, Brahmin and other dominant castes' experiences are considered, rather than simply focusing on the lives of oppressed castes (Dalits). Analysis of cross-caste friendships or romances and marriages, furthermore, brings out the intimate and ingrained aspects of caste. Taken together, therefore, the contributions in this volume offer rich insights into caste and its consciousness within the framework of everyday experiences. Book SynopsisThis open access book introduces a groundbreaking concept - civil society elites - and serves as an essential resource for scholars, researchers and students interested in the complexities of power and influence within contemporary civil societies. Through a series of unique empirical studies, the authors offer a comprehensive examination of the individuals occupying the upper echelons of influential civil society organisations and movements. By delving into the factors that propel individuals into key positions and examining the connections between civil society leaders within and across sectors, the book offers insight into the mechanisms that shape access to powerful positions in civil societies. As a reflection of current debates on elites and populism, the book furthermore explores the expression and conceptualisation of counter-elite positions and criticism of civil society elites. Trade Review“... Welche Formen nimmt Solidarität im Rechtspopulismus an? Wie findet sie gesellschaftliche Resonanz? Und wer wird einbezogen bzw. ausgeschlossen? • Toyota City in Transition: A Motor Town Facing

Springer Verlag, Singapore Toyota City in Transition: A Motor Town Facing

Book SynopsisThis informative monograph focuses on the city of Toyota, located in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Aside from the fact that most Toyota passenger vehicles are produced there, generally little is known about its reality.Since the 1960s, the city has continuously attracted numerous jobseekers from distant rural areas. Owing to years of stable employment and settlement within local communities, once-new workers gradually build strong ties with their neighbours and actively participate in residential activities. This pattern of settlement provides a unique example of long-prosperous industrial cities, which deserves discussion against a backdrop of the present “de-industrializing” urban economies.Unfortunately, this favourable situation is now changing, despite the regional economy’s steady recovery from the 2008 financial crisis. Addressing this paradox is the main focus of the present book. The upgrading of the Toyota Production System and concomitant widening class disparity are damaging local ties under severe pressure from global competition. Other suppressing factors are driven by sociological conditions, such as aging, declining marriage rates and birth rates. By comparing two sets of survey data, from 2009 and 2015, and performing fieldwork research in two communities that once were “new towns”, the book seeks to provide an understanding of the present situation of this unusual industrial city. At the same time, a unique theoretical perspective is revealed that does not fit the mould of either the Chicago School or the new urban sociology.Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Time and Space of an Advanced Industrial City 1. The Recent Sociological Changes and Slowdown of Community Building in Toyota City 2. Social Ties and Toyotism 3. ‘Motor Town’ and its Agriculture 4. History of a ‘New Town’ in Toyota 5. Book SynopsisThe end of retirement?Trade Review"Stunning and beautifully written. . . brilliant and haunting" -- Arlie Russell Hochschild - New York Times Book Review"People who thought the 2008 financial collapse was over a long time ago need to meet the people Jessica Bruder got to know in this scorching, beautifully written, vivid, disturbing (and occasionally wryly funny) book. Nomadland is a testament both to the generosity and creativity of the victims of our modern-medieval economy, hidden in plain sight, and to the blunt-end brutality that put them there. Is this the best the wealthiest nation on earth can do for those who’ve already done so much?" -- Rebecca Solnit, author of A Paradise Built in Hell"In the early twentieth century, men used to ride the rails in search of work, sharing camps at night. Today, as Bruder brilliantly reports, we have a new class of nomadic workers who travel in their RVs from one short-term job to another. There’s a lot to cringe at here—from low pay and physically exhausting work to constant insecurity. But surprisingly, Nomadland also offers its residents much-needed camaraderie and adventure, which makes this book a joy to read." -- Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed"The campsite as the home of last resort, the RV used not for vacation but for survival: these are the makings of a new dystopia. Nomadland is a smart road book for the new economy, full of conviviality and dark portent." -- Ted Conover, author of Rolling Nowhere and Immersion"You will never forget the people whose stories Bruder tells. Proud, resourceful, screwed-over, funny and in so many ways admirable, the American nomads Bruder lived with and reports on have sometimes lost everything but their bravado . . . . [She] tells their stories with humanity and wit." -- Louise Erdrich, author of Future Home of the Living God"“Bruder is a poised and graceful writer.”" -- Parul Sehgal - New York Times"[A] devastating, revelatory book." -- Timothy R. Smith - Washington Post"Some readers will come because they're enamored of road narratives, but Bruder's study should be of interest to anyone who cares about the future of work, community, and retirement." -- Peter C. Baker - Pacific Standard"[I]mportant, eye-opening journalism." -- Kim Ode - Minneapolis Star Tribune"[A] powerhouse of a book. . . . In the best immersive-journalism tradition, Bruder records her misadventures driving and living in a van. . . . Visceral and haunting reporting." -- Booklist, starred review
