Social groups, communities and identities Books
Rutgers University Press Scarlet and Black (3 volume set)
Book SynopsisThe 250th anniversary of the founding of Rutgers University is a perfect moment for the Rutgers community to reconcile its past, and acknowledge its role in the enslavement and debasement of African Americans and the disfranchisement and elimination of Native American people and culture.Scarlet and Black, Volume One documents the history of Rutgers’s connection to slavery, which was neither casual nor accidental—nor unusual. Like most early American colleges, Rutgers depended on slaves to build its campuses and serve its students and faculty; it depended on the sale of black people to fund its very existence. Scarlet and Black, Volume Two continues the work of the Committee on Enslaved and Disenfranchised Population in Rutgers History. This latest volume includes an introduction to the period from the end of the Civil War through WWII, a study of the first black students at Rutgers and New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and profiles of the earliest black women to matriculate at Douglass College.Scarlet and Black, Volume Three concludes this groundbreaking documentation and includes essays about Black and Puerto Rican students' experiences; the development of the Black Unity League; the Conklin Hall takeover; the divestment movement against South African apartheid; anti-racism struggles during the 1990s; and the Don Imus controversy and the 2007 Scarlet Knights women's basketball team. Scarlet and black are the colors Rutgers University uses to represent itself to the nation and world. They are the colors the athletes compete in, the graduates and administrators wear on celebratory occasions, and the colors that distinguish Rutgers from every other university in the United States. This body of work, however, uses these colors to signify something else: the blood that was spilled on the banks of the Raritan River by those dispossessed of their land and the bodies that labored unpaid and in bondage so that Rutgers could be built and sustained. The contributors to these volumes offer this history as a usable one—not to tear down or weaken this very renowned, robust, and growing institution—but to strengthen it and help direct its course for the future. Les Presses de l'Universite Laval Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Sport
Book SynopsisWomen, people with disabilities and LGBTQ2+ people are more present on the sports scene, but important transformations are still needed in organizations so that these people are better represented and included in all sports disciplines. This book, which is the result of a research project conducted with sports organization managers, coaches, athletes, experts and other stakeholders in the field, proposes concrete solutions for sport organizations. Throughout the book we propose and explain good practices in the area of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Together with numerous testimonials and examples from the field, these practices adapted to the sport environment make it possible to overcome the barriers that prevent women and people from historically marginalized groups from participating in sport and from reaching leadership positions within these organizations. The practices presented in this book are based on an analytical framework for inclusion in organizations that can be applied beyond the Quebec and Canadian context.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Indigenous Life Projects and Extractivism: Ethnographies from South America
Book SynopsisExploring indigenous life projects in encounters with extractivism, the present open access volume discusses how current turbulences actualise questions of indigeneity, difference and ontological dynamics in the Andes and Amazonia. While studies of extractivism in South America often focus on wider national and international politics, this contribution instead provides ethnographic explorations of indigenous politics, perspectives and worlds, revealing loss and suffering as well as creative strategies to mediate the extralocal. Seeking to avoid conceptual imperialism or the imposition of exogenous categories, the chapters are grounded in the respective authors’ long-standing field research. The authors examine the reactions (from resistance to accommodation), consequences (from anticipation to rubble) and materials (from fossil fuel to water) diversely related to extractivism in rural and urban settings. How can Amerindian strategies to preserve localised communities in extractivist contexts contribute to ways of thinking otherwise?Trade Review“The volume … is one of the latest works within the growing body of literature on extractivism and indigeneity in the region. Clearly written and yet rich in always surprising ethnographic material, this volume is essential reading for scholars and students interested in both Amerindian anthropology and political ecology in general.” (Anthropological Quarterly, Vol. 93 (2), 2020)Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Police Abuse in Contemporary Democracies
Book SynopsisThis volume offers a much-needed analysis of police abuse and its implications for our understanding of democracy. Sometimes referred to as police violence or police repression, police abuse occurs in all democracies. It is not an exception or a stage of democratization. It is, this volume argues, a structural and conceptual dimension of extant democracies. The book draws our attention to how including the study of policing into our analyses strengthens our understanding of democracy, including the persistence of hybrid democracy and the decline of democracy. To this end, the book examines three key dimensions of democracy: citizenship, accountability, and socioeconomic (in)equality. Drawing from political theory, comparative politics, and political economy, the book explores cases from France, the US, India, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Brazil, and Canada, and reveals how integrating police abuse can contribute to a more robust study of democracy and government in general.Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Invisibilization of Suffering: The Moral Grammar of Disrespect
Book SynopsisThis book offers a comprehensive theory of invisibility as a critical sociological concept, addressing the relationship between social suffering and invisibilization. Herzog draws on social theory and a variety of empirical examples to analyze social grammar and unveil various mechanisms of social suffering. Presenting an original theory of silencing and suffering, this book outlines a substantive theory and methodology of invisibilization as an instrument of authority. This systemic analysis of visibility as both a liberating and dominating mechanism will be a major contribution to the field of critical theory, offering an original framework to help improve the situation of excluded groups and individuals.Invisibilization of Suffering will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars across sociology, social philosophy, social work, political sciences, criminology, linguistics and education, with a focus on justice theory, marginalization, discrimination and exclusion.Trade Review“The monograph as a whole makes apparent the difficulties in analyzing social suffering as a conceptual object because there are many intersecting forms of suffering to consider. This text is a useful handbook for understanding these complex linkages in terms of what they are like empirically, rather than of how they should be. In subsequent system analyses that prioritize holism, this work is indispensable. … His blend of interdisciplinary concern and immanent critique is an impressive feat in critical suffering studies.” (Mikaela Brough, Journal of the Anthropological Society of Oxford Online, Vol. 13 (1), 2021)Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Working-Class Environmentalism: An Agenda for a
Book SynopsisThis book presents a timely perspective that puts working-class people at the forefront of achieving sustainability. Bell argues that environmentalism is a class issue, and confronts some current practice, policy and research that is preventing the attainment of sustainability and a healthy environment for all. She combines two of the biggest challenges facing humanity: that millions of people around the world still do not have their social and environmental needs met (including healthy food, clean water, affordable energy, clean air); and that the earth’s resources have been over-used or misused. Bell explores various solutions to these social and ecological crises and lays out an agenda for simultaneously achieving greater well-being, equality and sustainability. The result will be an invaluable resource for practitioners and policy-makers working to achieve environmental and social justice, as well as to students and scholars across social policy, sociology, human geography, and environmental studies.Table of Contents1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Migration, Social Identities and Regionalism
Book SynopsisThis book offers a theoretical and substantive analysis of intra-Caribbean migration, perception of regionalism, and the construction of identities among Caribbean nationals. Through a multi-methods study in the 15 member countries of the Caribbean community, Oral Robinson explores how intra-Caribbean migrants experience living within different member countries, and how these experiences and perceptions influence ideas about citizenship, belonging, and identity. Responding directly to the lack of scholarship on how Caribbean nationals feel about integration and/or free movement within their own countries and other Caribbean countries, this volume attempts to understand Caribbean societies historically, theoretically, and methodologically; proposes bases of social identities in the Caribbean; and examines how intra-Caribbean migrants negotiate their identities and narrate their lived experiences as intra-Caribbean migrants. The book offers policy solutions based upon its findings, reconciling practice, theory, and migration policies in the Caribbean.Table of ContentsPart I: Understanding Caribbean Societies Historically, Theoretically and Methodologically Chapter 1: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM): Integration, Intra-Regional Migration and Identities Chapter 2: A Concise Migration History of the Caribbean Community Chapter 3: Theorizing Migration and Identities Chapter 4: Researching Migration within a Cross-Caribbean Context Part II: Bases of Social Identities in the Caribbean Chapter 5: Caribbean Identity -Myth or Facts Chapter 6: Making Sense of Caribbean Citizenship and Migration Chapter 7: Perceptions of Regionalism and Impacts on social identities Part III: Migration, Citizenship & Identities Chapter 8: Intra-Caribbean Movement and Social Identities Chapter 9: Realities of Living within Other CARICOM Countries Chapter 10: Conclusions: Reconciling Practice, Policy and Theory in Caribbean Migrations Appendixes Bibliography

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Equality: Multidisciplinary Perspectives
Book Synopsis‘Equality’ as an ideal has a long history, and while some progress has obviously been made, the persistence of certain inequalities is remarkable. In order to draw a detailed picture of equality’s nature, value, relevance, and scope, this book provides a multidisciplinary analysis. Using a classic three part framework, the book looks at the macro level (broader systemic, historical, conceptual, societal and European level), the meso level (concrete social institutions such as the labour market and the welfare state) and the micro level of the individuals and their relations and thoughts about equality (psychological reactions, cultural depictions and sociological analyses). The chapters not only provide an overview of the state of equality, but also identify promising areas of future research, and will be of interest to students and scholars across a number of fields including European studies, history, law, political philosophy, psychology, sociology and economics. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Coronavirus, Class and Mutual Aid in the United
Book SynopsisThis book considers how the UK government’s response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic disadvantages the working class, and how mutual aid, based on anarchist principles, can be used as a force for social change. The authors draw on Marxist and anarchist thought in class theory and social movement analysis to demonstrate that the virus and its material and discursive consequences are an active part of continuing class struggle and class interpolation. Preston and Firth examine how plans for quarantine and social isolation systematically work against the needs of the working class, and rely on classed assumptions about how markets and altruism operate. In the face of neoliberal methods of dealing with a pandemic, ranging from marketization, disaster capitalism, to a strengthening of the State, Coronavirus, Class and Mutual Aid in the United Kingdom explains how radical alternatives such as social movements and mutual aid can be implemented to better cope with current and future crises. Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. The Viracene and Capitalism.- 3. Classed Practices: Pandemic Preparedness in the UK.- 4. Mutual Aid, Anarchist Preparedness and COVID-19.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Urban Socio-Economic Segregation and Income Inequality: A Global Perspective
Book SynopsisThis open access book investigates the link between income inequality and socio-economic residential segregation in 24 large urban regions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. It offers a unique global overview of segregation trends based on case studies by local author teams. The book shows important global trends in segregation, and proposes a Global Segregation Thesis.Rising inequalities lead to rising levels of socio-economic segregation almost everywhere in the world. Levels of inequality and segregation are higher in cities in lower income countries, but the growth in inequality and segregation is faster in cities in high-income countries. This is causing convergence of segregation trends. Professionalisation of the workforce is leading to changing residential patterns. High-income workers are moving to city centres or to attractive coastal areas and gated communities, while poverty is increasingly suburbanising. As a result, the urban geography of inequality changes faster and is more pronounced than changes in segregation levels. Rising levels of inequality and segregation pose huge challenges for the future social sustainability of cities, as cities are no longer places of opportunities for all.Table of ContentsPart 1: Introduction.- Rising inequalities and a changing social geography of cities. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Stress and Poverty: A Cross-Disciplinary
Book SynopsisThe word stress is everywhere and highly overused. Everyone is stressed, it seems, all the time. Looking into the meaning of stress in the natural science and the humanities, this book explores cellular stress as cause of and in correlation with what humans experience as stress. When do we psychologically feel stress and when do we show physiological evidence of stress in our brain? Stress is a deviation from what feels normal and healthy. It can be created by social or economic factors and become chronic, which has substantial impacts on the individual and society as a whole. Focusing on poverty as one chronic inducer of stress, this book explores how the lack of pressure-free time, the hardships and unpredictability of everyday life and a general lack of protection lead to destructive toxic stress. This pressure affects cognitive and social functioning, brain development during childhood and may also result in premature aging. How can the sciences inform our understanding of and our response to stress? What can be done about toxic stress both on a personal level and in terms of structures and policies? The book is written for anyone interested in stress, its causes and consequences, and its relationship to poverty. Table of Contents(1) Introducing the topic (MB, EK, CS) (2) The beginnings of stress research: Hans Selye (MB) (3) Oxidative Stress (MB) (4) Endocrinological and neurological stress research (MB) (5) Psychological stress research with a focus on poverty (EK, CS) (6) The experience of poverty in its multidimensionality (EK, CS) (7) Biographical evidence of people experiencing poverty (EK, CS) (8) A biological commentary on “poverty and stress” (MB) (9) Normative questions: Who causes stress, who benefits, who suffers? Springer International Publishing AG Caste in Everyday Life: Experience and Affect in
Book SynopsisThis edited volume brings together a range of scholars to reflect on the varied ways in which caste is manifested and experienced in social life. Each chapter draws on different methods and approaches but all consider lived experiences and experiential narrations. Considering Guru and Sarukkai’s path-breaking work on ‘Experience, Caste and the Everyday Social’ (2019), this volume applies the insights of the theories to multiple settings, issues and communities. Unique to this volume, Brahmin and other dominant castes' experiences are considered, rather than simply focusing on the lives of oppressed castes (Dalits). Analysis of cross-caste friendships or romances and marriages, furthermore, brings out the intimate and ingrained aspects of caste. Taken together, therefore, the contributions in this volume offer rich insights into caste and its consciousness within the framework of everyday experiences. Lars Muller Publishers Diaspora of the Middle East and North Africa
Book SynopsisThrough a series of essays, photographs, and archival content, this book highlights the diverse young and old diaspora communities of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) around the world. Drawing on topics from the ten-year archive of Brownbook magazine-a publication dedicated to covering stories on the contemporary culture of the wider MENA region and its diaspora, including people, architecture, and more than fty cities-the book is driven by the magazine's expansive research and content. And in light of the recent refugee crisis, it is an urgent testament that migration from the region isn't something new.Diaspora of the Middle East and North Africa is a gateway to the communities who have planted roots in adoptive cities where they now seamlessly blend, from the nine million strong Arab community in Brazil that arrived from modern-day Lebanon and Syria in the late 1880s, to the Singaporean descendants of Yemen who have helped shape the city state's urban fabric through trade and development for nearly two centuries. The book also covers the small but signi cant diaspora communities who have formed enclaves across the world, such as the Kurdish residents with barber shops and food joints in Nashville and the Assyrians in Sodertalje, Sweden who place equal importance on integration and preserving their history through local institutions and social clubs.

De Gruyter Vulnerable Groups in Malaysia
Book SynopsisVulnerability is a term that can be studied from different dimensions – the social, legal, economic and political. This book explores these dimensions and captures the vulnerabilities of particular groups in Malaysia – the transgenders, women, children, aboriginal and indigenous people, the rural fisherfolk, the stateless and the economically disempowered. Mirroring the spectrum of »vulnerable groups« defined by the United Nations Global Compact in the 2016 Sustainable Development Goals Report, this book highlights the unique features that portray vulnerabilities – including gender, age, indigeneity, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. The case studies of vulnerable groups in Malaysia – a multicultural, diverse plural Asian state – would be appreciated by both undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics, researchers and policy-makers, keen in Asian Studies and vulnerabilities.

Book SynopsisThis brief focuses on the “doing” of procedural justice: what the police can do to implement the principles of procedural justice, and how their actions can improve citizen perceptions of police legitimacy. Springer International Publishing AG Gender-Based Violence: Perspectives from Africa,
Book SynopsisThis book offers new perspectives on gender-based violence in three regions where the subject has been taboo in everyday discourse often due to patriarchal cultural norms that limit women’s autonomy. The contributions to this book provide rare insight into not only the levels and the socio-demographic determinants of domestic violence, but topics ranging from men’s attitudes toward wife beating; domestic violence-related adolescent deaths, and women’s health problems due to sexual and physical abuse. With a comprehensive introduction that provides a comparative international research framework for discussing gender-based violence in these three unique regions, this volume provides a key basis for understanding gender-based violence on a more global level.Part I, on Africa, covers men’s attitudes towards domestic violence, the impact of poverty and fertility, the association between adolescent deaths and domestic violence, and the link between domestic abuse and HIV.Part II, on the Middle East, covers the importance of consanguinity on domestic violence in Egypt and Jordan, the effects of physical abuse on reproductive health, and the link between political unrests and women’s experience and attitudes towards domestic violence.Part III, on India, shows how sexual abuse puts women at risk of reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted infections, as well as the role of gender norms in wife abuse and the role of youth aggressive behavior in nonconsensual sex. With such a deep and broad coverage of factors of intimate partner abuse, this book serves as a reference document for researchers, decision-makers, and organizations that are searching for ways to reduce gender-based domestic violence. This book is of interest for researchers in Criminology and Criminal Justice, as well as Sociology, Social Work, Public Health and Human Rights.Table of ContentsIntroduction Yanyi K. Springer International Publishing AG HIV and Young People: Risk and Resilience in the
Book SynopsisRevisiting the thinking on vulnerability to HIV and risk of infection, this book provides better understanding by considering the risk of HIV infection alongside notions of personal and collective resilience, dignity and humiliation. The work shows that young people in the urban slum dignify their world and, in doing so, establish priorities and draw on a set of references oftentimes intelligible to them alone. Moreover, humiliation, as an interpersonal event, adds to a sense of vulnerability and lies closely behind choices directly affecting personal health and livelihood. Thus, dignity and humiliation are shown for the first time to have a critical role in health seeking and risky behavior related to HIV, and this is an area in great need of further research. The crucial focus of this work is further emphasized by the rapid growth of urban slums, and high rates of HIV among both slum dwellers and young people, who continue to bear the brunt of the AIDS epidemic, thirty years on. This comprehensive literature review provides a compelling argument that the time is right to further explore the nexus of risk and resilience from a people-centered perspective. Fresh insight is critical to reach the goal of ending AIDS by 2030.Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. Vulnerability and Risk – health and well being in the slum.- 3. HIV as an urban epidemic.- 4. Springer International Publishing AG Uncommodified Blackness: The African Male
Book SynopsisThis book is a study of the lived experience of African men in Australia and New Zealand. The author employs a relational account of racism which foregrounds how the colonial shaped the contemporary, with the settler states of contemporary Australia and New Zealand having been moulded by their colonial histories. Uncommodified Blackness examines the changing racial conditions in Australia and New Zealand, inspired by the view that as racial conditions change globally, prevailing racial modalities in these two countries must be reexamined and theory must be developed or revised as appropriate. Students and scholars across a range of social science disciplines will find this book of interest, particularly those with an interest in refugees, immigration, race and masculinity.Trade Review“Mandisi Majavu’s book, Uncommodified Blackness. The African Male Experience in Australia and New Zealand offers a detailed, critical examination of the everyday, cultural and social experiences of African male migrants in Australia and New Zealand. … this is a welcome contribution to the limited sociological knowledge and understanding of everyday life experiences of Africans living in the West, and especially in Australia and New Zealand, given their small but growing African populations.” (Louise Owusu-Kwarteng, Ethnic and Racial Studies, September, 2017)“The book offers valuable insights for studies of refugees and migration, global African and urban geographies, and the past-presents of white supremacy. … Majavu’s work highlights the exciting insights afforded by closer ties between African Geographies and this new body of scholarship. It pushes us toward a diversely imagined Africa, one inclusive of global African and Afro-descendent communities, marked by, and resisting, colonial pasts and presents, and invigorated by the long legacies of anti-racist thought.” (Caroline Faria, African Geographical Review, July, 2017) Table of Contents1. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden HabitusAnalysis 2 – Praxeology and Meaning: With
Book SynopsisStarting from the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, Schäfer composes a methodical approach to habitus of social actors and the logic of their praxis: Building upon the generative terms of praxeology, he focuses on identity and strategy in processes of internalization, their transformation by means of dispositional schemes, and their externalization in action. The emphasis lies on a theory of dispositions that allows a flexible understanding of identity and strategy formation in the context of social experience and the interplay with social structures. This theory is developed over the course of a three-step analysis on habitus as a network of dispositions, on the dynamics that unfold between the logic of socio-structural processes and practical logic, and on the praxeological assessment of social structures via models of fields and the social space. This book is the second of three volumes of HabitusAnalysis. While the first volume deals with the epistemological underpinnings of praxeology, this book advances Bourdieu's theory with a special focus on creativity of action in the context of social structures, thereby preparing the methodological design of empirical models in the third volume.Table of ContentsPreface.- Preliminary remarks.- Intrduction.- Part one: generative terms.- Struggles, actors, operations: on the logic of praxeology.- Internalization: embodiment of social structure.- Transformation: situated creativity.- Externalization: words as deeds.- Capital: generating inequality.- Part two: mapping praxeology.- Creativity in relations: habitus and the practical sense.- Operating in between: practical logic and logic of praxis.- Specific struggles: fields and space.- A twofold outlook: reading backwards and forwards.- Reading backwards—social space, fields, and dispositions.- Reading forwards—volume 3.

Trade Review“... ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon When Stereotype Meets Prejudice: Antiziganism in
Book SynopsisAntiziganism is a widespread phenomenon in all European societies. Poor or rich, 'post-communist' or 'traditional', North or South, with 'lean' or 'thick' welfare systems -- all European societies demonstrate antisiganist prejudice. All across Europe Romanis are among the poorest, most destitute, and most excluded communities. Widespread prejudice and stereotypical representations of Romani individuals limit their chances for participation in democratic decision-making processes and their access to services. Unable to counteract majority stereotypes systematically, more often than not they remain on the fringes of society. This edited volume asks where these stereotypes and prejudices come from, why they are ubiquitous to all societies, and how pertinent their impact on antiziganist attitudes found in European societies really is.
