  • Fanon Education Action

Taylor & Francis Fanon Education Action

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBridging childhood studies, pedagogy and educational theory, critical psychology, and postcolonial studies, this unique book reads the role and functions of âthe childâ and childhood as both cultural motif and as embodied life condition through the work of Frantz Fanon. Based on innovative readings of Fanon and postcolonial cultural studies, the book offers new insights for critical pedagogical and transformative practice in forging crucial links not only between the political and the psychological, but between distress, therapy, and (personal and political) learning and transformation. Structured around four indicative and distinct forms of âchildâ read from Fanonâs texts (Idiotic, Traumatogenic, Therapeutic, Extemic), the author discusses both educational and therapeutic practices. The pedagogical links the political with the personal, and Fanonâs revolutionary psychoaffective account offers vital resources to inform these. Finally the book presents âchild as methodâ as a new analytical approach by which to read the geopolitical, which shows childhood, education, and critical psychological studies to be key to these at the level of theory, method, and practice.By interrogating contemporary modalities of childhood as modern economic and political tropes, the author offers conceptual and methodological resources for practically engaging with and transforming these. This book will be vital and fascinating reading for students and scholars in psychology, psychoanalysis, education and childhood studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, and mental health.Trade ReviewO, to have had this book in hand over the years when I taught ‘Radical Theories of Education’! Fortunately, for many interested in this area of research it’s not too late. Erica Burman’s use of ideas from Frantz Fanon to illuminate questions of learning, guided by nuanced understandings of failure, offers ‘child as method’ but not as instrument or tool. This thought-provoking book brings to the fore educational theory as a self-critical human science without the aloofness of thought bereft of practice and sensitivity to the psychosocial dynamics of power. Lewis R. Gordon, Global Center for Advanced Studies and author of What Fanon Said: A Philosophical Introduction to His Life and Thought‘Education, globally, needs to be challenged. Child as Method, inspired by Frantz Fanon, is a timely intervention to imagine a different mode of thought for a more creative and better future of the world, earth and planet.’ Kuan-Hsing Chen, Professor of Social Research & Cultural Studies, NCTU, Taiwan, author of Asia as Method: Towards De-imperialization‘Erica Burman's pathbreaking interpretation of 'child as method' builds on Frantz Fanon's understanding of racism and oppression and the transformative power of individual and social resistance. Burman's unique work constitutes a major contribution to the interpretation of Fanon's work and its radical implications for educational and childhood development.’ Irene L Gendzier, Professor Emeritus, Department of Political Science, Boston University, US, author of Frantz Fanon: a critical study‘Fanon as educator? It’s not the usual view – but Fanon’s writing can be a powerful resource for educational thought in a postcolonial world. Erica Burman’s detailed and scholarly treatment brings out a surprising range of intellectual connections and political implications from the famous texts. Her approach offers striking new thinking on race, coloniality, the psychology of child/adult relations, and the multiple meanings of childhood.’ Raewyn Connell, Professor Emeritus, School of Education & Social Work , University of Sydney, Australia, author of Southern Theory‘‘Child as method’ is a unique and intriguing approach that contributes to postcolonial studies in education. The close involvement of this book with the re-reading of Fanon and the centrality of the child provide fascinating and substantial theoretical resources for ethically and politically committed educational research leading to a wider project of subjective and societal change.’ Yoonmi Lee, Professor, Department of Education, Hongik University, Seoul, Korea‘Fanon, education, action: Child as method is a unique conceptual intervention articulating a critical practice to mobilise "a pedagogy of and for decolonization and redistribution". It foregrounds how Fanon’s theoretical, methodological and political activism coalesce with his conceptualisations of childhood to create a practice of child as method. In doing so, Burman offers a rare and distinctive way of reading educational and wider social pedagogical practices that offer some insightful relational and transformational possibilities.’ Sue Grieshaber, Professor of Education, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia‘This book establishes the child as a recurring, pivotal figure in Fanon’s corpus and conversely, presents Fanon as a major resource for those engaged in analysis of the child in cultural-political practices. In deft readings of cases and scenes which include but go beyond the famous racialising encounter with a white child in Black Skin, White Masks, Burman uncovers an intersectional Fanon attuned to instability and nuance, a Fanon whose psychiatric and political practices are inseparable. The close readings bring into relief four distinct modes of operationalizing the child, variously deployed, complicated, and subverted by Fanon. Burman offers these as the basis for ‘child as method,’ neither a child nor the child, but both and more: it is a way of thinking the social, cultural, and political through invocations of child and the models of temporality, capacity, vulnerability, and transformability they carry. This book will be an important tool for those working in Childhood Studies, Education, Decolonization, Globalism, Women’s Studies and Cultural Studies.’ Jennifer Henderson, Associate Professor, Department of English/School of Indigenous & Canadian Studies, Carleton UniversityTable of ContentsForewordAcknowledgementsChapter One: Fanon, education, action: towards child as methodChapter Two: Idiotic childChapter Three: Traumatogenic childChapter Four: Therapeutic ChildChapter Five: Extemic childChapter Six: Child as methodReferencesIndex

  • Suffering and Psychology

Taylor & Francis Ltd Suffering and Psychology

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSuffering and Psychology challenges modern psychology''s concentration almost exclusively on eradicating pain, suffering, and their causes. Modern psychology and psychotherapy are motivated in part by a humane and compassionate desire to relieve many kinds of human suffering. However, they have concentrated almost exclusively on eradicating pain, suffering, and their causes. In doing so psychology perpetuates modern ideologies of individual human freedom and expanding instrumental control that foster worthy ideals but are distinctly limited and by themselves quite self-defeating and damaging in the long run. This book explores theoretical commitments and cultural ideals that deter the field of psychology from facing and dealing credibly with inescapable human limitations and frailties, and with unavoidable suffering, pain, loss, heartbreak, and despair. Drawing on both secular and spiritual points of view, this book seeks to recover ideals of character and compassionTable of ContentsIntroduction1. Stories of Suffering 2. Book SynopsisForced Migration and Social Trauma addresses the topic of social trauma and migration by bringing together a broad range of interdisciplinary and international contributors, comprising refugee care practitioners, trauma researchers, sociologists and specialists in public policy from all along the Balkan refugee route into Europe. It gives the essence of a moderated dialogue between psychologists and psychoanalysts, sociologists, public policy and refugee care experts.Migration is connected to social trauma and cannot be handled without being aware of this context. The way refugees are treated in the transit or target countries is often determined by the socio-traumatic history of these countries. Social trauma can be collectively committed and perpetuated, leaving transgenerational traces in posttraumatic and attachment disorders, uprootedness and loss of social and political confidence. Media and cultural artefacts like press, TV and the internet influence coTrade Review"Psychoanalytically-informed literature on immigration has largely sidestepped the anguish of exiles and refugees. This book by Hamburger et al. rectifies this inattention and does so in a comprehensive and far-reaching manner. It addresses the suffering of adult and child refugees, host societies’ ambivalence towards the newcomers, the containing and inciting role of media, and the ameliorative measures, both on an individual and societal basis, that aim to heal the trauma of geographical dislocation. Impressively, the book also elucidates the problems faced by those in caregiving roles vis-à-vis refugees and suggests ways to handle them. This is a serious, sophisticated and psycho-politically significant work in our times of radical demographic change and global turmoil."-Salman Akhtar, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Thomas Jefferson University, Training and Supervising Analyst, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, USATable of ContentsPreface by Vamik Volkan; Preface by Ivan Krastev; Dreams to nightmares- welcoming culture, xenophobia and social trauma along the Balkan route: an introduction Andreas Hamburger, Camellia Hancheva, Saime Ozcurumez, Carmen Scher, Biljana Stanković, Slavica Tutnjević PART I: Refugees in public policy and social representation Introduction to Part I by Saime Ozcurumez Chapter 1: International Protection and Psycho-Social Support Services Saime Ozcurumez Chapter 2:Political Traumatisation and Trauma-Discourse Marcus Kumpfmüller Chapter 3: Social Trauma in International Refugee Legislation Jean-Jacques Petrucci & Andreas Hamburger Chapter 4: Visual constructions of ‘refugeeness’ and portrayal of flight in German newspapers Jelena Jovičić Chapter 5: Media Coverage of Refugees and Policy Processes: Serbia and the Refugee Crisis in the 2000s Momir Turudić Chapter 6: How "Words Matter": Reporting on Refugees and Migrants in Europe Žarka Radoja Chapter 7:Refugees in public policy and social representation: workshop results Andreas Hamburger PART II: Trauma and Migration: Psychological Aspects of forced Migration and Mental Health Introduction to Part II Trauma and Migration – Psychological Aspects of forced Migration and Mental HealthAndreas Hamburger & Camellia Hancheva Chapter 8: Syrian ‘Guests’ and the ‘Receiving’ Communities: Traumatization of Being an Outsider/Insider Gamze Ozcurumez Bilgili Chapter 9: Inner Emigration Horst Kächele Chapter 10: How Can Refugees Heal? Book SynopsisThe Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license. There has been an enormous increase in interest in the use of evidence for public policymaking, but the vast majority of work on the subject has failed to engage with the political nature of decision making and how this influences the ways in which evidence will be used (or misused) within political areas. This book provides new insights into the nature of political bias with regards to evidence and critically considers what an improved' use of evidence would look like from a policymaking perspective.Part I describes the great potential for evidence to help achieve social goals, as well as the challenges raised by the political nature of policymaking. Book SynopsisWhat are the basic dimensions of temperament? How does temperament influence children's relationships to their physical and social worlds--and their behavior and adjustment across the lifespan? What are its biological underpinnings? From preeminent researcher Mary Rothbart, this work comprehensively examines the role of temperament in the development of personality and psychopathology. In a direct and readable style, Rothbart combines theory and research with everyday observations and clinical examples. She offers new insights on difficult children and reviews intervention programs that address temperamental factors in childhood problems. Winner--Eleanor Maccoby Book Award, American Psychological Association Division 7 (Developmental Psychology)Trade Review"One of the wisest, most interesting, and most important books in psychology in recent years. A world-renowned expert, Rothbart brilliantly shows how temperament combines with experience to make us who we are."--Carol S. Dweck, PhD, Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology, Stanford University"This outstanding book from the foremost world expert on temperament offers a creative and authoritative synthesis. A broad range of interrelated topics are addressed, including the development and structure of temperament and personality; connections to competence, conscience, and psychopathology; meaning structures; biological and environmental contributions to temperament; and interventions. Rothbart clarifies the multiple levels of factors that contribute to the course of human development. There is something for all developmental scientists and students in this accessible and well-written book."--Nancy Eisenberg, PhD, Regents' Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University "In this excellent book, Rothbart brings her pioneering theory of temperament into full fruition. Her comprehensive presentation ranges from the history of temperament to its development into adult personality. Rothbart sets forth a clearly documented, dynamic perspective on the relation between temperament and personality. Through thought experiments, she reveals how individual differences develop within the child's social and physical environment. Discussions of psychopathology and interventions are included. This is a book for all researchers and clinicians interested in understanding how we become who we are."--Arnold J. Sameroff, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Michigan"Half the battle in child clinical work is deriving an effective formulation of a child's issues. Child clinicians who read this book will come up with more effective formulations. They will think in richer ways about concepts of temperament, how temperament influences and is influenced by the social environment, and implications for the child's social development and sense of self. The book also offers helpful discussions of temperament-informed interventions, such as parent training and executive function training."--John E. Bates, PhD, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Indiana University "While one of the longest-studied topics in psychology, temperament remains one of its toughest nuts to crack. Rothbart leads the reader along a compelling personal and scientific journey during which the many factors that combine to make us unique individuals--biological, social, and developmental--are carefully assessed and elucidated. Rothbart's writing style is clear and engaging. This book not only reflects the current state of the field, but also, I suspect, will shape its future."--Mark H. Johnson, PhD, Professor and Director, Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, Birkbeck College, University of London, United Kingdom "This book provides a comprehensive and substantive basis for understanding temperament, personality, development, and the links among them. Importantly, and a rare accomplishment, it also provides useful insights into how temperamental differences affect individuals' everyday lives, their achievements, and their problems. The book is grounded in solid theory and evidence but reflects Rothbart’s sensitivity to children, parents, and families. She is an eminent developmental researcher who brings real clinical insights to an important topic. A 'must read.'"--Barbara Keogh, PhD, Professor Emerita, Graduate School of Education and Department of Psychiatry, University of California, Los Angeles; author of Temperament in the Classroom-A thoughtful, scientific, and wise analysis of what we have learned about temperament, development, and personalityand where we have to press further. • Applied Qualitative Research Design

Guilford Publications Applied Qualitative Research Design

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis unique text provides a comprehensive framework for creating, managing, and interpreting qualitative research studies that yield valid and useful information. Examples of studies from a wide range of disciplines illustrate the strengths, limitations, and applications of the primary qualitative methods: in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, ethnography, content analysis, and case study and narrative research. Following a consistent format, chapters show students and researchers how to implement each method within a paradigm-neutral and flexible Total Quality Framework (TQF) comprising four interrelated components: Credibility, Analyzability, Transparency, and Usefulness. Unlike other texts that relegate quality issues to one or two chapters, detailed discussions of such crucial topics as construct validity, interresearcher reliability, researcher bias, and verification strategies are featured throughout. The book also addresses applications of the TQF to the writing, reviTrade Review"The presentation of a TQF that can be used both to evaluate published studies and create high-quality studies is a unique contribution to the field of qualitative inquiry. The TQF will be particularly helpful to graduate students who are venturing into qualitative research. The authors skillfully guide the reader through the various modes of data collection and analysis. They provide detailed guidance on key methodological issues, such as decisions regarding sample size, conducting telephone versus face-to-face interviews, and uses of focus groups."--Margaret J. Bull, PhD, RN, Marquette University College of Nursing “A most original contribution that has been put together with the greatest of care. I applaud the authors for dividing each of the five methods chapters into well-organized sections that cover all aspects of the methods and explain how and why to apply TQF principles. Each chapter ends with an exceptionally effective case study to illustrate the concepts described. Other highlights of the book include the discussion topics and exercises to further readers’ thinking and understanding. This will be a great text for my senior-level honors seminar in qualitative research design."--Kimberley Ducey, PhD, Department of Sociology, University of Winnipeg, Canada “This is an excellent text for a graduate qualitative research course, as well as a valuable reference for professionals. Well-written and easy to use, it provides a practical approach for students by incorporating exercises, case studies, web resources, and discussion topics. The latest research trends are discussed throughout, such as email IDIs, mobile ethnography, and synchronous versus asynchronous online discussion boards. The authors’ years of experience in conducting qualitative research make this book not only informative, but interesting to read.”--Candice R. Hollenbeck, PhD, Department of Marketing, University of Georgia “A much-needed, pathbreaking book that will help set new standards of authoritativeness and excellence in qualitative research. The TQF is a powerful approach that can inform all types of research. I particularly like the authors' thorough attention to context, which they carefully explain in the introduction and develop throughout the book; this is one of the most important aspects of qualitative research."--Gerald Kosicki, PhD, School of Communication, The Ohio State University “The writing is clear with helpful illustrative examples. Strengths of the book include its user-friendly narrative language and the effective applied exercises and case studies at the end of each chapter.”--Mary I. Dereshiwsky, PhD, Department of Educational Leadership, Northern Arizona University -Roller and Lavrakas do a fantastic job of identifying strengths and limitations of each design model.--The Qualitative Report, 1/1/2018ƒƒThis book is suffused with the elements of what the authors call the total quality framework--namely credibility, analyzability, transparency, and usefulness. Each chapter is built around this framework so the important decisions needed throughout the stages of a qualitative research study are covered….Good use is made of chapter summaries and discussion topics and worked examples….Where appropriate, the advantages and disadvantages of preparing for, collecting, and analyzing data using technology is explored providing an additional dimension to the text. I would recommend this book to educators, researchers, and postgraduate students who are undertaking qualitative research.--Nurse Researcher, 1/1/2016ƒƒA hands-on, innovative, integrated methods text….The framework provides principles and practices for researchers to apply throughout the research process so that they are more likely to gather high-quality data, come to a more complete and valid interpretation of their data, and generate and present useful outcomes….The book contains chapters on each of the main qualitative methods: in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography, content analysis, and case studies. The authors, in keeping with the integrated approach of their model, in parallel fashion apply each of the four elements of the framework to each technique and its particular requirements. This feature alone is a major strength of this work. But each method chapter contains some additional valuable elements, such as skills researchers must bring to that particular technique, strengths and weaknesses of that approach, and ethical considerations. The authors also provide a case study at the end of each chapter that is an example of a research project utilizing the TQF standards for that specific method. If that weren't enough, the final chapter focuses on how to use the TQF to assess the quality of qualitative studies done by others--or at least, grant or project proposals….The book itself is very well organized and well written….Section headings and parallel organization make it easy to jump back and forth, and chapter summaries along with an extensive glossary likewise aid the reader….Overall, Roller and Lavrakas have done social science scholars of all stripes a big favor.--Public Opinion Quarterly, 5/1/2016ƒƒReaders will benefit from the book's organization, with its similarly formatted chapters, and from the frequent examples, bulleted lists, diagrams, and annotated bibliographies at the end of the chapters. The overall presentation facilitates comprehension of what can be, for some, difficult content….This is an outstanding adjunctive resource for those using particular research paradigms (e.g., grounded theory, phenomenology, ethnography, etc.) and for those in need of a framework to ensure rigor in any qualitative research study. The book provides a new, fresh, and meticulous approach to creating, understanding, using, and evaluating qualitative research. (review by Martha M. Book SynopsisEdwin H. Friedman has woven 24 illustrative tales that offer fresh perspectives on familiar human foibles and reflect the author's humor, pathos, and understanding. Friedman takes on resistance and other demons to show that neither insight, nor encouragement, nor intimidation can in themselves motivate an unmotivated person to change. These tales playfully demonstrate that new ideas, new questions, and imagination, more than accepted wisdom, provide each of us with the keys to overcoming stubborn emotional barriers and facilitating real change both in ourselves and others. Thought-provoking discussion questions for each fable are included. Book SynopsisPrecise shifts in the ways people make sense of themselves, others, and social situations can help people flourish. This compelling handbook synthesizes the growing body of research on wise interventions--brief, nonclinical strategies that are wise to the impact of social-psychological processes on behavior. Leading authorities describe how maladaptive or pejorative interpretations can undermine peopleâs functioning and how they can be altered to produce benefits in such areas as academic motivation and achievement, health, well-being, and personal relationships. Consistently formatted chapters review the development of each intervention, how it can be implemented, its evidence base, and implications for solving personal and societal problems.Trade Review"In the last decade, researchers from across psychology have been developing and testing a new generation of theory-guided brief interventions that are changing behaviors of hundreds of people at a time. These 'wise' interventions effectively alter the ways people think about themselves, their studying or eating habits, their marriages, and their health. The outcomes are usually objective and meaningful, and often last for years. From leading researchers in the field, this is the kind of book that has the potential to change the lives of undergraduates, graduate students, and even faculty who yearn to make a difference in the world and who also want to discover new insights about people, institutions, and culture."--James W. Pennebaker, PhD, Regents Centennial Professor of Liberal Arts and Psychology, The University of Texas at Austin "This volume highlights innovative interventions and provides behind-the-scenes commentary from their developers. It is indispensable for anyone who wants to use psychological science to change behavior for the better. Each chapter explains a research-based approach to enhancing motivation or changing behavior, and discusses why it works, for whom, and under what conditions."--Angela Duckworth, PhD, Founder and CEO, Character Lab; Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania “It’s not often that the world’s leading experts on the psychology of changing behavior and improving well-being come together to share their knowledge. This book presents the latest science on what it takes to promote learning, belonging, happiness, health, and peace.”--Adam Grant, PhD, The Saul P. Steinberg Professor of Management and Psychology, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania "This book is particularly useful in terms of teaching about and critically evaluating the value of psychology in the real world. Its underlying framing is quite pragmatic for different ways to organize a course. It centers both the domains of interventions and the psychological concepts underlying those interventions. Instructors using this book as a text might organize their course around domains (for example, units on health, education, relationships) or psychological concepts (for example, belonging and groups, implicit theories, reappraisal)."--Kody Manke, PhD, Department of Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University-Table of ContentsIntroduction, Gregory M. New York University Press The Crisis of Connection

Book SynopsisUncovers the roots and consequences of and offers solutions to the widespread alienation and disconnection that beset modern society Since the beginning of the 21st century, people have become increasingly disconnected from themselves, each other, and the world around them. A crisis of connection stemming from growing alienation, social isolation, and fragmentation characterizes modern society. The signs of this crisis of connection are everywhere, from decreasing levels of empathy and trust, to burgeoning cases of suicide, depression and loneliness. The astronomical rise in inequality around the world has contributed to the critical nature of this moment. To delve into the heart of the crisis, leading researchers and practitioners draw from the science of human connection to tell a five-part story about its roots, consequences, and solutions. In doing so, they reveal how we, in modern society, have been captive to a false story about who we are as human. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this important book, Niklas Luhmann uses his powers as an analyst of the social system to examine two of the most important concepts which hold that system together and allow it to evolve: trust and power. He criticises those theoretical accounts whose roots lie in what he refers to as ideologies – accounts which use implicit beliefs in particular conceptions of human nature to explain and predict social action in a one-dimensional way. Theories of rational choice and moralistic explanations are taken to task, as are the theories of both Marx and Habermas. Luhmann's unique scientific sociology underpins every page and enables him to highlight the potential shortcomings of these narrative approaches. Underlying this approach is the idea that ideologically-based social theory, whether critical or conservative, is unable to do justice to the complexities existing within the parameters of social systems, individuals, and the interactions between them. He aims to show instead how only a painstaking systems analysis can capture these intricacies. Although written over 40 years ago, Luhmann's complex vision of the operations of trust and power provides a wealth of insights of considerable value to scholars and students grappling with contemporary social and economic problems. The editors' introduction to this new edition and the significant revisions they have made to the translation will help to reveal the richness and clarity of this vision and its relevance to the ways that trust and power operate in today's society.Trade Review"A must-read for anyone interested in trust research in German-speaking contexts, Luhmann's ideas around trust as a mechanism of reducing complexity have also been highly influential for scholars..."Journal of Trust ResearchTable of ContentsContents Introduction: Niklas Luhmann's Sociological Enlightenment and its Realisation in Trust and Power - by Christian Morgner and Michael King Editors note on the revised translation Part 1: Trust Preface - by the author 1. Book SynopsisRelationships fall apart, marriages fail, couples break up – it happens to us all. Time corrodes passion and the routines of daily life kill the excitement that surrounds the emotion of the first encounter. The difficulty of uniting sexual pleasure with love, which Freud considered to be the most common neurosis in any love life, has become emblematic of a truth that seems undeniable: desire is destined to die if its object is not constantly renewed, if we do not change partner, if it is closed for too long in the restrictive chamber of the same bond. And yet what happens to these bonds when one of the two partners betrays the other, when the promise fails, when there is another emotional experience cloaked in secrecy and deceit? What happens if the traitor then begs forgiveness? Are they asking to be loved again and, having declared that it is not like it used to be, now want everything to go back to how it was? Should we make fun of lovers in their attempts to make love last? Or should we try to face up to the experience of betrayal, with the offence caused by the person we love most? Should we not perhaps attempt to praise forgiveness in love?Trade ReviewFascinating and provocative, this book sizzles with critical passion. It is fed by a deep knowledge of the vagaries of love in our nihilistic, hyper-hedonist times and by psychoanalytic insight. Book SynopsisEarly modern stereotypes used to be studied as evidence of popular belief, something mired with prejudices and commonly held assumptions. Stereotypes and stereotyping in early modern England goes beyond this view by exploring practices of stereotyping as contested processes. To do so, the volume draws on recent works on social psychology and sociology. It thereby brings together early modern case studies and explores how stereotypes and their mobilisation shaped various negotiations of power, in spheres of life such as politics, religion, economy and knowledge production.Table of ContentsIntroduction: rethinking early modern stereotyping in the twenty-first century – Koji Yamamoto and Peter Lake1 Religious and national stereotyping and prejudice in seventeenth-century England – Tim Harris2 On thinking (historically) with stereotypes, or the puritan origins of anti-puritanism – Peter Lake3 History plays, Catholic polemics and the staging of political economy in Elizabethan England – Koji Yamamoto4 Alchemists, puritans and projectors in the plays of Ben Jonson – Peter Lake and Koji Yamamoto5 Ranter and Quaker stereotyping in the English Revolution – Kate Peters6 Fighting popery with popery: subverting stereotypes and contesting anti-Catholicism in late seventeenth-century England – Adam Morton7 ‘We do naturally … hate the French’: Francophobia and Francophilia in Samuel Pepys’s Diary – David Magliocco8 ‘Sin and sea coal’: smoke as urban life in early modern London – William Cavert9 Laboratories of subjectification: characters and stereotypes in late Stuart and Georgian theatre – Bridget Orr10 From Reformation to Enlightenment in post-civil war orientalism – William J. Book SynopsisOver the past decade, many famous entrepreneurs and celebrities have begun to open up about their life-changing experiences with psychedelics that led to their personal successes. But less well-known are the wisdom-bringing psychedelic experiences of many top psychologists, psychiatrists, researchers, and others who have taken what they learned from their entheogenic experiences and applied it in their professions, leading to therapeutic advancements, scientific discoveries, and healing for thousands. In this profound book, Dr. Richard Louis Miller shares stories of psychedelic transformation, insight, and wisdom from his conversations with 19 scientists, doctors, therapists, and teachers, each of whom has been self-experimenting with psychedelic medicines, sub rosa, for decades. We hear from scientific psychonaut Amanda Feilding, founder of the Beckley Foundation; ethnobotanical explorer Dennis McKenna; research advocate and head of MAPS Rick Doblin; and the “Sunshine Makers”: Tim Scully, the scientist taught to make LSD by Owsley Stanley, and Michael Randall, the leader of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love. We learn about recasting “bad trips” as unfamiliar challenges from psychedelic swami Dr. Allan Ajaya, therapeutic uses of MDMA from “the love doctor” Charley Wininger, decades of insights from psychedelic professor Thomas B. Roberts, as well as several others. Revealing the psychedelic wisdom uncovered in spite of decades of the “War on Drugs,” Dr. Miller and his contributors show how LSD and other psychedelics offer a pathway to creativity, healing, innovation, and liberation.Trade Review“I love this book! The interviews (really, intimate conversations) are emotionally intense, insightful, and revelatory. Each is a deep dive into a life transformed early on by psychedelic revelations and also matured, deepened, and revised over decades of continued psychedelic use. Finally able to be shared, here is the knowledge and experience of elders, shared life lessons of caring and compassion. A book of gifts, of gratitude, and so much to be learned.” * James Fadiman, PhD, microdose researcher, author of The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide, and coau *“The publishing of Psychedelic Wisdom could not have come at a better time. Psychotherapists, neuroscientists, creatives, and spiritual seekers are discovering and rediscovering the amazing potential of psychedelic substances. These substances can promote psychological healing and facilitate problem-solving. They can be used as tools to study brain function and the nature of consciousness. They can produce feelings of wonder, sacredness, and transcendence. “All of these topics and more are explored in this collection of in-depth interviews with elder scientists, therapists, professors, artists, and doctors. Over the years, these leaders have experimented with and employed psychedelic substances in their personal and professional lives. Their experiences have been well-seasoned by time, and yet they remain fresh as the morning dew.“Dr. Miller has a way, a gift really, of opening the right doors with his questions for his guests. He then encourages them to freely express and follow the stream of consciousness that ensues. As these explorers share their stories, their ‘confessions’ provide a peek into the vast range of experiences accessible with these remarkable substances.” * Nicholas V. Cozzi, PhD, educator and scientist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School o *“The dialogues featured in Psychedelic Wisdom shimmer with insight. The degree of candor, wit, and understanding reflected in its pages is unmatched among the psychedelic literature that is currently flooding into the marketplace. Lest there be any doubt, the high-minded wisdom of this book is needed now more than ever.” * J. • Permission to Narrate: Explorations in Group

Taylor & Francis Ltd Permission to Narrate: Explorations in Group

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPermission to Narrate develops exciting new theory and explorations for group analysis. They are diverse in range and, from differing bases in theory and research, aim to cast light on how clients find voice and speak out in groups and the importance of rhetoric in the understanding of communication. It addresses the ways in which silenced, submerged and less confident voices emerge, finding permission and narration, often against the odds. Positioning and dialogical theory is used to show how such voices are caught up in and defined by discourses, and also how we can transcend the definitions and positions into which we are thrown. Accessible clinical and historical examples bring theory to life.Permission to Narrate also uses applied group analytic theory to consider the cultural role and rhetoric of monsters, and what these representations tell us about the position in which human beings conceive themselves. Also explored, using applied group theory, are the meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Quakers, both serving as remarkable examples of different, alternative group formations. A chapter on revolutions, in England, France, and elsewhere, demonstrates the role of rhetorical re-definitions of society and an aesthetics of revolt. A semi-autobiographical chapter discusses different interpretations of Freud, over the years, while the final chapter argues that group analysis faces serious 'discipline anxiety' after its first sixty years or so. How it responds to such anxiety can be decisive in terms of our viability and continuing relevance as a discipline and practice. This book will be of interest to clinicians and academics, across disciplines including history, social psychology and cultural studies.Trade Review'These excellent and elegant essays extend the frontiers of group analysis, adding further depth and breadth, not to mention innovation, to our discipline andresearches.'- Malcolm Pines, group analyst, author of The Evolution of Group Analysis'Very original, imaginative and striking - a different point of view on what we do.'-- Liesel Hearst, group analyst, and co-author of Group-Analytic Psychotherapy'This book is a fascinating account through a series of essays, made more interesting still by its courageous self-disclosures and glimpses into the author's own history.'- Professor Edward Khantzian, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Harvard Medical School'Martin Weegmann further develops his acute understanding of analogy, rhetoric, metaphor and symbolism and the ways in which group and individual narratives interweave and influence each other, including novel insights into the formation and lure of psychoanalysis.'-Alistair D. Sweet, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, Belfast'This beautifully written book is dizzyingly wide-ranging, its span including narrative and dialogical psychology, group analysis, rhetoric, literature, historical and political analysis, and even an excursion into the world of monsters, as well as the author's own clinical and personal experiences. We should be grateful to Martin Weegmann for giving himself the permission to narrate so broadly because the result is not just an invitation for a paradigm change in group analysis but a fine and evocative demonstration of the power of words.'- David Winter, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Hertfordshire'In recent years Martin Weegmann, a distinguished clinical psychologist and group analyst, has begun to share his rich clinical voice with colleagues in a host of intriguing and wise publications on the addictions and related topics. His most recent book explores the necessity of granting not only our patients but, also, ourselves the permission to transform our hidden narratives into words in order to obtain relief. Weegmann illustrates this most powerfully through a series of intelligent, literate, and historically deft chapters which range from a study of Alcoholics Anonymous, to the language of group analysis, to the life and work of Sigmund Freud. The author writes in a clear and inviting style - never pompous or bombastic - and one imagines that he creates a similarly welcoming atmosphere in his consulting room. One will finish reading this book feeling rather better educated about the entire panoply of psychotherapy.'-Brett Kahr, Senior Fellow at the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships, in the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology, London, and, Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Psychotherapy and Mental Health at the Centre for Child Mental HealthTable of ContentsForeword , Introduction , The rhetorical ground of group analysis , Taking position: what groups do we bring? , Remembering monsters , Naught but a story to tell*: Alcoholics Anonymous , Revolutionary subjects, bodies, and crowds , Psychoanalytic fascinations: my seven Freuds ... . , Discipline anxiety—time for paradigm change in group analysis? , Epilogue

In a time of deep fakes, alternative truths and leaked secrets, it would be easy to think that we are surrounded by lies. While most people are shaking their heads and muttering dark things about the new levels of deceit, former Times journalist Kathleen Wyatt is busy marvelling at how society manages it. How do we do this extraordinary thing, often under the most ordinary of circumstances? When do we first do it, why do we do it and do we really tell more lies today? Wyatt goes deep into disinformation to find out - but given her own lies, can she even be trusted on this subject? In this brilliant, wide-ranging study of lies and lying, Wyatt introduces us to a cast of professionals and professional liars - from scientists to investigators, from double agents to toddler specialists, from a fallen titan of industry to a Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisA beguiling look at seven contemporary nomadic cultures around the world, offering a timely insight into alternative ways of life that connect us to our ancestral roots. A fascinating and beautiful survey of seven nomadic societies spread across the continents. With delicately beautiful illustrations bringing the material to life, we learn about the Sama Bajau, fishing nomads from the Philippines who spend months at sea without ever touching land. We discover the Yanomami peoples of the Amazon rainforest whose connection to their environment informs every aspect of their lives. The Nenet nomads of Siberia follow their reindeer through blasting winds to the very edge of the Arctic Circle. All these cultures face common pressures and problems. Governments want them to settle down and assimilate; local populations view them with suspicion; subsistence farming or herding is not viable in a cut-throat globalised world. This book offers a timely window on a simpler way of life, and on human traditions and cultures that connect us to our distant ancestors. Elegantly and respectfully written and illustrated, this book is a captivating contribution to the growing literature on nomadic societies, and will appeal to both the education and the gift markets.

Book SynopsisDisConnected offers a new vision of human nature and a new understanding of human behaviour and social problems. Connection is the most essential human trait - it determines our behaviour and our level of well-being. Cruelty is the result of a sense of disconnection, while “goodness” stems from connection. Unfortunately, the most disconnected people gravitate to positions of power, which leads to “pathocracy,” the most common form of government during the 20th century. Disconnected societies are patriarchal, hierarchical and warlike. Connected societies are egalitarian, democratic and peaceful. We can measure both social progress and personal development in terms of how far we move along a continuum of connection. At the most essential level, we are always interconnected. Altruism and spirituality are experiences of our fundamental connection. Regaining awareness of our connection is the only way by which we can live in harmony with ourselves, one another, and the world itself.

Book SynopsisDemocratic societies thrive when citizens actively and critically engage with new ideas, developments and claims to truth. Not only can such practices result in more effective choice-making, but they can also lead to widespread support for progressive beliefs, such as social justice. With Western societies in the midst of environmental, social and political crises, it seems more pertinent than ever that citizens become ‘ideas-informed’. Presenting concepts from academia, industry, and practice, The Ideas-Informed Society closes the gap between the ideal of the ideas-informed society and the current reality. By exploring what it means to be ideas-informed and the benefits for both individuals and society, the chapters conceive what an ideal ideas-informed society would look like, what are the key ingredients of an ideas-informed society, and how to make it happen.Table of ContentsForeword; Sir Anthony Seldon PART 1: The Concept of an Ideas-Informed Society Chapter 1. Book SynopsisWithin psychology, emotion is often treated as something private and personal. In contrast, this book tries to understand emotion from the 'outside,' by examining the everyday social settings in which it operates. Three levels of social influence are considered in decreasing order of inclusiveness, starting with the surrounding culture and subculture, moving on to the more delimited organization or group, and finally focusing on the interpersonal setting.Trade Review"This is one of the best and most comprehensive treatments of emotion available today. The authors, each an accomplished researcher in his or her own right, have done a superb job integrating a large and diverse set data. Theoretically sound, empirically grounded, and global in scope, the book is also clearly and engagingly written. A major accomplishment." -- James R. Averill, University of Massachusetts, Amherst"At first glance, emotions are simple, biological events inside a person. This important book by three distinguished researchers argues, convincingly, that emotions are not so simple. Instead, they are deeply social events. This book is required reading for anyone who deals on a practical or a scientific level with emotion." -- James A. Russell, Boston College"An exciting movement is occurring in the psychology of emotions. Rather than seeing emotions only in the heads and bodies of individuals, psychologists are beginning to explore how emotions align and realign relationships between people. Anyone interested in this fascinating new direction could do no better than to read the book by Brian Parkinson, Agneta Fischer and Tony Manstead: a fine book on an up-to-the-moment topic." -- Keith Oatley, University of Toronto"The authors present a deeply social conception of emotion with arguments that are passionate yet balanced, scholarly yet accessible. Anyone with an interest in human emotions will want to read this book." -- W. Book SynopsisThis book provides a framework that sheds an illuminating light into the psyche of people involved in macro-level destructive intergroup conflicts, involving societies and ethnic groups, that take place continuously in various parts of the globe. It focuses on the socio-psychological repertoire that evolves in these societies or groups and which plays a determinative role in its dynamics. Specifically, this repertoire influences the nature of social reality about the conflict that society members construct, the involvement with and mobilization of society members for the conflict, the sense of solidarity and unity they experience, the conformity expected from society members, the pressure exerted on leaders, and the direction of action taken by the leadership. In addition, the book describes the changes in the socio-psychological repertoire that are necessary to ignite the peace process. Finally, it elaborates on the nature and the processes of peace building, including conflict resolution and reconciliation. The proposed conception assumes that although each conflict has its unique context and characteristics, the socio-psychological foundations and dynamics are similar. It offers a holistic and comprehensive outlook on the dynamics that characterize each stage and aspect of intractable conflicts. Each chapter systematically elucidates a particular part of the cycle, describing the theoretical frameworks and concepts, as well as presenting empirical data that was accumulated. The volume is an important contribution for all those who study intergroup conflicts and want to understand their dynamics. In addition, the book will interest the many people attempting to settle conflicts peacefully and who need knowledge about the socio-psychological vectors that influence their course and resolution.Trade Review"This excellent volume comes at the right time for all those who study intergroup conflicts and want to understand their dynamics, and it provides a strong foundation for future research in this important area."John C. Book SynopsisOstracism, Exclusion, and Rejection examines research into the related phenomena of ostracism, exclusion and rejection. Most individuals have experienced both sides of the coin: being ostracized and ostracizing others. People experience mild forms of ostracism on a daily basis, but some endure years and decades of being the social outcast. How does it feel to be shunned, left out, not wanted? Research suggests that even the mildest and briefest forms of ostracism are painful and have downstream consequences to our feelings of social connection. Longer-term ostracism has devastating consequences on individuals’ health and well-being.This innovative compilation covers how being cast out affects the brain and body chemistry, feelings and emotions, thoughts and beliefs, and behaviors. In addition to the primary focus on targets of ostracism, researchers also examine the motives and consequences of ostracizing. Social scientists from social psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, communication science, cross-cultural psychology, and anthropology tackle these questions with cutting-edge methods and provocative theories. A key volume for all in those fields, this book also presents applications from the schoolyard to the workplace, and sounds a much-needed call for further research on this universal behavior of all social animals.Trade Review"This volume does a superb job of summarizing theoretical and empirical work on social marginalization. Written by leading researchers and spanning the physiological to the societal level of analysis, the volume is a key reference regarding ostracism, exclusion, and rejection." – John Levine, University of Pittsburgh, USA"The list of contributors to this edited volume includes some of the most influential social scientists who have studied social ostracism. It represents a must-read for anyone interested in the scientific study of ostracism." – John B. Book SynopsisIsabel Menzies Lyth has formulated a way of thinking about social structures as forms of defence - as ways of avoiding experiences of anxiety, guilt, doubt and uncertainty - that is as challenging as it is persuasive. She believes that the individual is engaged in a lifelong struggle against primitive anxiety. A psychoanalyst writing in the tradition of Klein and Bion, her writings span more than thirty years of research in applied psychoanalysis and are here collected in the first of two volumes. In her classical paper on nursing, she writes: "By the nature of her profession the nurse is at considerable risk of being flooded by intense and unmanageable anxiety." The organisation and bureaucracy of the nursing profession have failed to contain the high levels of anxiety and stress that nurses experience, attempting instead to take practical steps to enhance recruitment and stem job wastage. The 'real nature' of the problem remains untouched. This is a controversial collection, which makes available to a wider public an important part of the research tradition of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. The author extends her analytic range to cover themes of children in long-stay hospitals and day-care institutions, and the maternal role today. All the essays combine her two main professional interests: the dynamics of the individual in his or her own right and the psychodynamics of the social world.

  • Climate Psychology: A Matter of Life and Death

Karnac Books Climate Psychology: A Matter of Life and Death

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisClimate Psychology offers ways to work with the unthinkable and emotionally unendurable current predicament of humanity. The style and writing interweave passion and reflection, animation and containment, radical hope and tragedy to reflect the dilemmas of our collective crisis. The authors model a relational approach in their styles of writing and in the book’s structure. Four chapters, each with a strikingly original voice and insight, form the core of the book, held either end by two jointly written chapters. In contrast to a psychology that focuses on individual behaviour change, the authors use a transdisciplinary mix of approaches (depth psychology and psychotherapy, earth systems, deep ecology, cultural sociology, critical history, group and institutional outreach) to bring into focus the predicament of this period. While the last decade required a focus on climate denial in all its manifestations (which continues in new ways), a turning point has now been reached. Increasingly extreme weather across the world is making it impossible for simple avoidance of the climate threat. Wendy Hollway, Paul Hoggett, Chris Robertson, and Sally Weintrobe address how climate psychology illuminates and engages the life and death challenges that face terrestrial life. This book will appeal to three core groups. First, mental health and social care professionals wanting support in containing and potentially transforming the malaise. Second, activists wanting to participate in new stories and practices that nurture their engagement with the present social and cultural crisis. Third, those concerned about the climate emergency, wanting to understand the deeper context for this dangerous blindness.Trade Review‘This timely and important book comprises an investigation of the causes of the current climate crisis, common reactions to this existential threat and how therapists can help each other and their clients face reality and find a way forward. [...] I heartily recommend this engaging and well-written book’ -- Dr Els van Ooijen, psychotherapist, Therapy Today Sept 2022'This volume is a refreshing and provocative contribution to an important area of concern. By the end of the book I was ever more convinced of the significance of climate psychology to our lives and felt that, in their different ways, the authors helped fashion both a deeper understanding of the problems and a way forward. It has encouraged me to think a great deal, to consider further my own implication in these matters, and to work harder to address these important, pressing issues. For this reason, I whole- heartedly recommend this book.' -- Mark Stein'To the uninitiated, the waltzing heat of recent years, the melting ice sheets of recent fears, and blusteringly rude clouds outside our pristine windows, are matters of the outside. This book, however, is not a gentle tap on the door separating that outside from the gilded interior of modern subjectivity, it is a haunting within: the urgency to consider that the inside has always been exposed. It is a transdisciplinary invitation to recognise how we Moderns are aspects of an ethical/psycho-ecological/socio-material arrangement that has helped produce the calamities we now witness. There is no neat inside any longer; we are all undone. But, you see, the undoing – the timely gift of this book – is the initiation we all need.' -- Bayo Akomolafe, PhD, author of These Wilds Beyond our Fences: Letters to My Daughter on Humanity’s Search for Home‘These four eminent British climate psychology thinkers challenge us to think creatively, beyond binaries, to reach what they name the “eco-psycho-social”. This book is an engaging and important support to clinicians and to all trying to manage and think through our contemporary emergency in humane and ethical ways. We are in their debt.’ -- Donna Orange, PhD, PsyD, teacher, psychoanalyst and author of Psychoanalysis, History, and Radical Ethics: Learning to Hear‘Individualism, human exceptionalism, modernism (and its bastard child, postmodernism): this book dares to imagine a psychology that moves decisively beyond these fatal trends. Instead, we are offered fare badly needed: a social ecopsychology, the personhood of nonhuman as well as human animals taken seriously, an unembarrassed call to feel and show our love for this world. There is nothing less than a revolution in the offing, in the discipline we used to call psychology. This book indicates a way to (re-)imagine it.’ -- Professor Rupert Read, former strategist, spokesperson for XR, and author of Parents for a Future: How Loving our Children Can Prevent Climate Collapse‘Climate psychology is an emerging and much-needed field in our struggle to make the necessary changes to our dysfunctional relationship with Earth. This book offers a diverse range of innovative thinking that pulls together threads from the eco–psycho–social fields. It challenges the reader to find new ways of seeing and understanding our current eco social crisis which will hopefully inspire new forms of action.’ -- Mary-Jayne Rust, art therapist, Jungian analyst, ecopsychotherapist and author of Towards an EcopsychotherapyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements About the authors Chapter 1 Introduction: a matter of life and death Wendy Hollway, Paul Hoggett, Chris Robertson, and Sally Weintrobe Chapter 2 Climate change: from denialism to nihilism Paul Hoggett Chapter 3 How the light gets in: beyond psychology’s Modern individual Wendy Hollway Chapter 4 Climate psychology at a cultural threshold Chris Robertson Chapter 5 The new bold imagination needed to repair and expand the ecological self Sally Weintrobe Chapter 6 In the end is my beginning Wendy Hollway, Paul Hoggett, Chris Robertson, and Sally Weintrobe Index
