Book SynopsisThis is a unique book that brings together contemporary research and practice around working with men and boys who are victims of domestic violence and abuse. The book features contributions from experts within the field who draw on the wide range of evidence that demonstrates the multifarious experiences of this victimisation.Trade Review"The new volume on male domestic violence victimization, edited by domestic violence scholars Elizabeth Bates and Julie Taylor, is a welcome addition to the growing literature on this much-neglected topic. The book provides a nice balance of empirical research findings and qualitative accounts from men whose voices are almost never heard elsewhere. As a research scholar, and as a clinician who has worked with both male and female domestic violence victims, as well as their abusers, for over three decades, I found the data presented to be accurate and up-to-date, and the personal accounts very much rang true. In particular, the chapter on men's experiences as victims of coercive control reminds us that while women are far more impacted by physical abuse, the consequences of psychological abuse are much more comparable across gender. The sections on family violence and post-separation abuse provided an enlightening set of findings with implications for disputed child custody cases, where gendered assumptions of domestic violence have for years unnecessarily kept fathers from their children, and anyone concerned about the safety of victims ought to be concerned about the findings presented in the chapter on obstacles male victims face when seeking services." John Hamel, PhD, Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Private Practice and Editor-in-Chief of Partner Abuse."E. Bates and J. Taylor’s book presents an excellent and incisive analysis of different long-neglected issues that affect men who experience intimate partner violence. While the research on men’s partner victimization has been growing in the past ten-fifteen years, the book chapters cover a broad yet powerfully nuanced array of knowledge in this area, including men’s experiences of partner violence within the LGBTQ+ community, men’s experiences of coercive control and post-separation abuse, boys’ victimization within the family, and older men’s experiences of abuse. While men’s victimization is often considered a controversial issue, this book provides a balanced and nuanced analysis of the complexities of partner violence with the focus on men. Authors strongly support the use of gender-inclusive as opposed to gender-neutral language to highlight the importance of engaging consideration of men as not only the perpetrators but also as victims of abuse. As a compelling and informative work, this book is a must read for academics and practitioners alike, who seek to expand their knowledge and understanding of the challenges that men who experience partner violence face in different types of relationships and different contexts. I commend and admire Elizabeth Bates and Julie Taylor for putting together this book!"Alexandra (Sasha) Lysova, Associate Professor, School of Criminology, Simon Fraser University, Canada."Finally, here is a book that provides a resounding counterpoint to the gender-based violence discourse that focuses exclusively on female and child victimization - a discourse that has dominated global policy and politics about intimate partner violence for decades. Scientific evidence has been accumulating about the parity and impact of IPV on men and boys, yet this research and the experiences of these victims have been largely neglected and portrayed as anomalous or trivial. Bates and Taylor have compiled a set of chapters addressing a variety of topics that have been ignored in this larger IPV discourse, (e.g., intimate partner violence in the lives of gay, bisexual, and transgender men), each written in a balanced way by leading IPV scientists and scholars. The chapter authors not only review research evidence on the impact of IPV on men and boys, but they highlight topics that are ripe for scientific inquiry and understanding."Jennifer J. Harman, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Colorado State University, USA.Table of Contents1. Introduction: The importance of this volume. 2. Book SynopsisAt a time when there is increasing need to offer psychotherapeutic approaches that accommodate clients' religious and spiritual beliefs, and acknowledge the potential for healing and growth offered by religious frameworks, this book explores psychology from an Islamic paradigm and demonstrates how Islamic understandings of human nature, the self, and the soul can inform an Islamic psychotherapy.Drawing on a qualitative, grounded theory analysis of interviews with Islamic scholars and clinicians, this unique volume distils complex religious concepts to reconcile Islamic theology with contemporary notions of psychology. Chapters offer nuanced explanations of relevant Islamic tradition and theological sources, consider how this relates to Western notions of psychotherapy and common misconceptions, and draw uniquely on first-hand data to develop a new theory of Islamic psychology. This, in turn, informs an innovative and empirically driven model of practice that translates ITrade Review"This book is both timely and meaningful as it captures the context, methodologies, and author’s reflections on the emerging field of Islamic Psychology. It is an impressive addition to the literature, and I recommend it highly for those in academia and clinical practice."-- Amber Haque, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar"This much anticipated book by one of the leading contemporary figures in Islamic psychology is one of the most important contributions to date on this topic. Rothman's goal of advancing an understanding of human psychology rooted in an authentic, indigenous Islamic perspective is both noble and of critical importance. His work is also a beautiful example of the continuation of the development of psychological theory and application from within the larger legacy of the Islamic intellectual tradition as well as modern psychology. To the benefit of readers, the text is imbued with insight gained from almost 20 years of clinical experience that Rothman brings to his discussion and is underpinned by his humility and sincerity, both of which come through in his writing, making this work not only scientifically rigorous, but incredibly heartfelt and accessible. This book has relevance to so many areas of inquiry and should be mandatory reading in courses on Islamic psychology and psychotherapy, courses that delve into the intersection of science, psychology and religion, or by anyone interested in this topic."-- Carrie York Al-Karam, PhD, President, Alkaram Institute, USA"This is a ground-breaking book that fills an important void in the current psychological literature and sets the ground for a much needed Islamic orientation to psychotherapy that is suited to address the psycho-spiritual issues of Muslim patients, globally. Thus far, Eurocentric models have been insufficient to meet this need, and even ‘Islamic’ adaptations of these models have served to undermine and underestimate the richness found in the Islamic intellectual tradition. This book is a demonstration of the richness of the Islamic heritage and its ability to be authentically translated into therapeutic application to address practical mental health needs of Muslim populations."-- Hooman Keshavarzi, PsyD, Executive Director, Khalil Center, USA & Canada "This book is both timely and meaningful as it captures the context, methodologies, and author’s reflections on the emerging field of Islamic Psychology. Book SynopsisThis book presents psychological assessment and intervention in a cultural and relational context. A diverse range of contributors representing six continents and eleven countries write about their therapeutic interventions, all of which break the traditional assessor-as-expert-oriented framework and offer a creative adaptation in service delivery. A Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment model, including work with immigrant communities, and Indigenous modalities underscore individual and collective case illustrations highlighting equality in the roles of the provider and the receiver of services. The universality and uniqueness of culture are explored as a construct and through case material. Some chapters describe a partnership with a Eurocentric scientific model, while others adopt a purely community method, preserved with Indigenous language and subjective methodology. This volume brings together diverse therapeutic collaborative ideas, and recognizes relational, community, and cuTrade ReviewBe prepared to be challenged and inspired on this around-the-world trip through the development, adaptation, and application of culturally relevant, community oriented, and truly collaborative therapeutic interventions. This journey offers an immersion into the wide array of cultural values, beliefs, and ways of knowing around the globe that inform what diverse clients need and what psychologists must understand to help people and communities heal from trauma and loss and find well-being. Ranging from one continent to another, addressing the most diverse and disparate issues, this work offers a 360-degree view of the fundamental role socio-cultural aspects of belonging play in psychological intervention-- including the environmental context and the original culture.
